Sound System Installation Harrogate – we were instructed to carry out a Sound System Installation in St Wilfrids church hall in Harrogate, North Yorkshire as they had the requirement for an installed sound system to use for small wedding events, conferences, parties and services in the main hall.

We opted to install a pair of Wharfedale Si12 Passive speakers in white either side of the stage on the walls at high level using Powerdrive wall arm brackets along with a flight case on stage to house all the sound equipment, the Allen and Heath ZED16FX mixer, five Audio Technica radio microphone systems, Apart Audio CD player, QSC stereo power amplifier and an Ampetronic hearing loop amplifier.

On stage we installed some XLR plug in points so that their customers can plug in musical instruments, ipods, or even the audio from a Laptop if they are doing a presentations giving them some flexibility with their sound system installation.

In 1910, Agatha returned to England to find that her mother was ill. They decided to spend three months at the Gezirah Palace Hotel in Cairo. While in Cairo, Christie attended many social functions in search of a husband. When she returned to England she continued her social outings as well as writing and performing amateur theatricals. It was during this time that she wrote some poetry and music, however, even though some pieces were published, she decided against focusing on writing for future professions. Christie wrote her first short story, “The House of Beauty”, (later published as “The House of Dreams”) while recovering in bed from an undisclosed illness. “The Call of Wings” and “The Little Lonely God” followed. Magazines rejected all of her early submissions, made under pseudonyms, however, some were revised and published later.

Christie then set her first novel, “Snow Upon the Desert,” in Cairo and drew upon her experiences in that city. She wrote this under the pseudonym Monosyllaba. All the publishers that Agatha contacted declined her novel. Her mother suggested inquiring with a family friend, Eden Philpotts, who obliged and encouraged Christie’s writing. He even sent an introduction to his personal literary agent, Hughes Massie, who also rejected “Snow Upon the Desert,” but suggested a second novel.

It was also during this time that Agatha entered into several short-lived relationships and got engaged to another. Then she met Archibald Christie at a dance that was given by Lord and Lady Clifford at Ugbrooke. Archie was born in India, he was an army officer who was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in April 1913. With the outbreak of World War One, Archie was sent to France to fight the Germans. The couple married on Christmas Eve in 1914 at Emmanuel Church in Clifton, Bristol. In 1918, Archie was placed back in Britain as a colonel in the Air Ministry. During his time in the military, Agatha involved herself in the war effort. In 1914, she joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment where she tended to wounded soldiers at a hospital in Torquay as an unpaid nurse. She completed 3,400 hours of unpaid work between October 1914 and December 1916. She worked as an apothecaries assistant in 1917 as a dispenser where she earned 16 euros a year until the end of her service in 1918. After the war, the Christie couple settled into an apartment in northwest London.

Charging ahead

Charging technology is absolutely crucial to the success of any electric machine. Oliver Johnson talks us through the current state-of-the-art

As the dust settles after the Extinction Rebellion climate change protests brought road traffic in central London to a standstill in April, there has never been more attention on greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on climate change. Adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) will be vital to bringing emissions under control, particularly in the 19 countries around the world that have made a commitment to become carbon neutral by 2050, including the UK, France, Canada, Denmark and Spain.

But one challenge to the widespread adoption of EVs is the need for suitable charging points to remove range anxiety.

Most charging points today are domestic points that supply alternating current (AC) straight from the grid. It needs to be converted to direct current (DC) to charge the battery.

To do this, EVs have an AC-DC converter but because space is limited inside car bodies, these are quite small, so the power capacity is limited to 7-11kW for most cars. If you’ve got a car with an 80kWh battery, such as a Jaguar I-PACE, Audi e-tron or a Tesla, it could take 8-12 hours or more to fully charge the battery.

That’s fine for a domestic setting but we know drivers want much faster charging times at other sites – which is possible with DC chargers. These roadside units house large and powerful AC-DC converters that provide anything from 20–350kW, which can charge a large vehicle battery to 80% of capacity in under 15 minutes.

ABB has developed use cases that determine the most appropriate power rating for any particular site.

At the low end, homeowners are best off with a 3-22kW AC solution that provides a steady charge over 4-16 hours and doesn’t require them to upgrade their incoming supply.

However, for offices and commercial buildings, hotels and hospitality sites, car dealerships and commuter car parks, drivers expect to stay from one to threehours and 20-25kW DC charging power is acceptable.

The next level up is 50kW for 20-90 minute stays for sites such as supermarkets, restaurants and truck stops on the motorway. And the very highest power sites deliver charge in under 20 minutes for drivers at motorway service stations and convenience stops in city centres and the suburbs.   We are already seeing the deployment of DC charging infrastructure on highways. For example, Electrify America is deploying hundreds of high-power charging stations around 17 metropolitan areas in the US, as well as up to 120 miles apart along national highway corridors to overcome the range anxiety of car buyers. In the UK, the Ionity consortium of OEM car manufacturers is doing the same – its first site in Maidstone, Kent went live at the end of May. Others, such as Fastned, have already opened their first UK site.

What about large vehicles?

We’re also seeing deployment of high-power chargers for bus and truck fleets. In many ways, local bus services are the most suitable form of transport for EVs. They have predictable routes and operators can optimise routes and bus specifications with a relatively small battery that requires charging little and often – therefore freeing up space for passengers.

The technique of opportunity charging can provide these small and regular top-up charges throughout the day. As a result, buses do not have to return to the depot for recharging – meaning that 24-hour bus services are possible.

With opportunity charging, buses receive high power charge from an overhead pantograph that descends from a mast at the roadside. When a bus arrives at the stop, its WiFi connects to the charging point and triggers the pantograph to engage. Charging only takes a few minutes then the bus is ready to go back round its route.

Opportunity charging stations are based on exactly the same technology as DC charging points for cars, with the only difference being the automated overhead connector.

There are already many examples around the world. A fully electric and autonomous bus supplied by Volvo is in service at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Heavy vehicle chargers deliver 300kW DC power while passengers mount and dismount.

These type of charging masts can serve whole fleets of buses, such as in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, where a new fleet of 30 fully electric buses is set to enter service in October 2019, with power from opportunity charging stations at three stops along their route. In the UK, the market town of Harrogate is already operating three pantograph units in its bus depot to support buses running over long hours on eight routes. Birmingham Airport is due to start installing the same equipment to serve all-electric Volvo shuttle buses to transport passengers and staff to car parks.

However, trucks are also getting in on the act in anticipation of new ultra-low emission zones in major cities. Truck manufacturers are developing electric versions of their trucks and vans to meet demand from operators who want to avoid punitive fees for driving diesel powered vehicles in city centres.

What is inside a DC charger?

The AC/DC power converter is the main electrical component and typically comes in a modular format. These build up to deliver the desired rating.

However, the best approach to creating an EV charging point is to start with a really good processor and fast data connectivity – the ‘brains’ –  and build the power conversion ‘muscle’ around that.

This approach provides a seamless experience for drivers – for example, handling payment data and the electronic ‘handshake’ that happens when you plug a vehicle in. But it also lets the owner and operator of the charging point keep an eye on its performance from a remote control centre. It can give insight into the popularity of different sites, as well as the performance of converter modules, for example by raising alerts to send a technician if a converter module needs to be replaced.   The true test of any technology in the field comes over time. In the case of EV charging points, they will need to withstand extremes of summer heat, winter cold, rain and snow, as well as mechanical wear and tear.

As the main support series to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy Championship is a test-bed for the cars and their chargers in the most extreme conditions.

The high-power chargers used for the series contain identical components to the roadside technology, although they are repackaged in an air-freight enclosure so they can follow the series to 10 races around the world. Once in place at a circuit, the chargers must work perfectly, whether in the heat of Saudi Arabia or at the Jaguar Land Rover Ice Academy in Arjeplog in Sweden.

According to Chris Crump, Southern Europe Operations team leader for Jaguar Land Rover: “The ABB chargers at the Ice Academy are one of the most northerly of all DC charging infrastructure across Europe, and it is one of the most remote and coldest installations on the planet. The stations have been designed to perform in extreme conditions, from -35°C to 55°C.”

Where does the future lie?

Car manufacturers are actively developing cars with bigger batteries for longer range, with one example being Porsche’s first fully electric car, the Taycan, which is due to go into production in 2020.

The industry is very much focused on lithium-ion batteries. Although there has been a lot of discussion about other types of battery with higher energy densities, these are the subject of research and development for now. But when they are available, they will inevitably enable vehicle manufacturers to further extend the range of their vehicles – and this will only drive further demand for DC fast charging stations.

Restaurants fear Brexit will turn boom to bust

It’s just after lunchtime in the kitchen of Damian Wawrzyniak’s new restaurant on the outskirts of Peterborough and the Polish chef is busy preparing an evening menu reflecting the rich ingredients of his culinary journey: Polish “noodles” from his homeland; beef tatare inspired by a stint at Copenhagen’s Noma restaurant and succulent duck, pigeon and vegetables shot or picked in the East Anglian countryside.

Wawrzyniak came to the UK 15 years ago before rising to prominence on the BBC showing Mary Berry how to make his signature “babka” cake but these days he has more than recipes on his mind: specifically the challenge of finding trained staff for his House of Feasts and another restaurant that he plans to open in London next year.

“We are struggling at the moment to find staff because of Brexit– there is no doubt,” said Wawrzyniak, who recently switched entirely to hiring trainees and teaming up with Peterborough Regional College to run an apprenticeship scheme.

EU citizens make up a quarter of the 3 million workers in hospitality, according to a report by professional services firm KPMG. That includes 75% of waiting staff and 25% of chefs. As the clock ticks down to Britain’s departure from the EU, senior figures in Britain’s hospitality sector are warning that staff shortages brought about by an exodus of European workers, and a dearth of new arrivals post-Brexit, is a crisis in the making for an industry that is Britain’s fourth-biggest employer.

The squeeze is being felt all over the country, from booming northern “destination towns” such as York and Harrogate to London, at a time when consumer demand shows no sign of dropping off, notwithstanding Brexit-related anxieties.

“There’s a feeling that the party has ended,” said David Strauss, general manager of Goodman Restaurants group, which runs a string of steakhouses and eateries including Burger and Lobster. Five of its senior managers from EU backgrounds are in the process of leaving to go to Canada and Australia.

“There’s been a boom in the last 10 years in restaurants and it’s still carrying on, but we’re seeing people now look at the future and thinking ‘it’s not going to get much better here’.

Others are pulling down shutters, choosing to take a hit on continuing to pay rental costs. Factors such as property price inflation, a weak pound and the upward cost of ingredients which are traded on the international market – butter is a case in point – are backing many in the hospitality sector into a corner.

Britain’s sophisticated mid-market restaurant chain scene is likely to have the flexibility to weather the storm, but some independents may fall by the wayside.

The alarm bells are also being sounded by companies ranging from the sandwich chain Pret A Manger, which says it would find it virtually impossible to find enough staff if it were forced to turn its back on EU nationals after Brexit, through to the pizza chain Franco Manca, which warned this summer that it is already becoming harder to recruit staff.

There is also concern among companies that have made positive noises about Brexit. While arguing that Brexit was bringing a “greater sense of accountability and self-responsibility in the UK” Leon’s chief executive, John Vincent, has also expressed concerns about being able to hire and retain staff and admitted that many of them were upset by the referendum result.

As the Brexit process grinds along, the hospitality sector’s representatives have warned that government plans for the introduction of new qualifications in 2022, as part of efforts to create an army of British-born waiters, chefs and baristas, will come far too late. The result, according to the British Hospitality Association (BHA), could be that hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes across the UK go to the wall.

“We’re a labour-intensive industry so if you don’t have a chef, for example, there is no restaurant. It’s that simple,” said Ufi Ibrahim, the BHA’s chief executive, who said the problem was acute in London and the south-east but was being experienced across the country.

“There is grave concern in rural areas, for example, where public transport is lacking. Being able to find individuals – either British workers or others who would be restricted by access – is a problem. We also have a culture of restricted social mobility. It’s very difficult to see what contingency plans could be put into place to serve in the timelines that have currently been given.”

The Department For Education said: “We are transforming technical education so that young people have the skills and knowledge that employers and the country need.” A new “T-level” system, which overhauls how technical education is taught and administered, will be introduced from 2020.

The BHA’s concerns were shared by individual business owners, larger chains and town authorities. At the Chestnut Group, which operates six restaurants, pubs and hotels across rural Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, various moves are already being made to make the sector more attractive to employees. A 10% stake is being given away to its 140 staff, who can also use an app to swap shifts.

“Hiring in the sector is not easy so we’ve set out to address it in every way, whether it’s to do with helping people find the hours that work for them, or providing training with our own academy,” said chief executive officer Philip Turner.

Britain’s new boom towns are among those with particular challenges when it comes to a shortage of catering workers for key positions such as chefs.

One example is thriving York, which attracts some 6.9 million visitors a year, generating the demand for a string of major new hotels and restaurants. The company, which promotes the city on behalf of its council, plans a marketing campaign next year to attract talent, including chefs.

Some similar issues are in play in nearby Harrogate, where the cost of living has exacerbated recruitment challenges. “Times are tougher [in recruiting] and there has been a noticeable change in the last 12 months alone,” said Simon Cotton, group managing director in Harrogate at the HRH group of hotels.

“How much is driven by Brexit or by the economy getting better I am not sure but most of our businesses are performing better so we need more people.

“The risk is that there will be a lengthy gap of many years between what the government wants to do and then achieving that, so as an industry we are going to have to do something ourselves. In the meantime it becomes an employees’ market, not a employer’s one. I am seeing this in almost all the businesses I am running. It’s a sense that ‘if I don’t get the perks and pay rises I want then I can walk around the corner to the next job’.”

Gordon Ramsay told the Radio Times last month that an “influx” of multinational workers had “confirmed how lazy as a nation we are”. Changes such as curbs on foreign labour were a “big kick up the ass” for the industry, said Ramsay who looked forward to a focus on “modern-day apprenticeship” and on homegrown talent. Ramsay’s views were characteristically acerbic. But across the board there is a belief that the benefits of working in a sector that can offer a range of benefits including good pay, opportunities to travel and career advancement are not being adequately sold to young Britons, or perhaps realised by them.

Will Beckett, co-founder of the Hawksmoor restaurant chain, said: “There are some cultural issues at play and certainly there is a perception that the restaurant industry is not a particularly attractive proposition, or that some young Brits are not up for the type of work involved.

“My experience of British people is that they will work extremely hard not just in managerial roles but as kitchen porters or similar positions.”

In a city where EU workers make up the backbone of hospitality staff, Hawksmoor stands somewhat apart in that a substantial proportion – more than 40% – of its workers are British. Beckett emphasises the need to make staff feel valued: “The restaurant industry is character. You have to really be prepared to pitch in and British people will do that, although they like to know why and for what wider purpose.”

Damian Wawrzyniak is as well placed as anyone to judge the work ethics of British and Polish workers. “I can’t say that there is a difference between the Polish and British. It doesn’t matter what nationality you are. If someone does not want to work then they won’t work,” he said.

ASHTON UNITED have no room for error tomorrow (Saturday). If they want to make sure of a home tie in the Evo-stik NPL premier division play-off semi-finals on Tuesday, they must win at Workington.

Goal difference means it’s highly unlikely the Robins would miss out on the play-offs altogether, but a defeat or draw at Borough Park could allow Grantham to overtake them. A victory, on the other hand, might even get them into second place depending on Warrington’s fortunes at Stourbridge.

“That Stalybridge game killed us,” said manager Jody Banim. “We should have won it, and if we had we’d be second now. It’s so frustrating.

“At least as it stands everyone will have to put their strongest side out. No one will have the luxury of being able to rest players because everybody needs to win.”

Ashton’s only definite absentees are goalkeeper Dave Carnell, who has a torn hamstring, and club captain Mark Lees, who has a broken metatarsal. However, Alex Johnson, whose availability has been hampered by his new job as a prison warder, will be able to play at Workington and in the play-offs if necessary.

Banim is also hoping to field Matty Chadwick at some point. He explained: “Matty was on the bench at Matlock in midweek but it was a really tight game and it wasn’t the right situation to bring him back. Hopefully he can get some minutes tomorrow.

“We really need to win and secure third place because it would be a nightmare if we had to go to Grantham on Tuesday.”

STALYBRIDGE CELTIC travel to Halesowen for their twelfth game in 22 days with only 13 players available, and one of those faces a fitness test.

Striker Matty Wolfenden limped out of last night’s 5-0 home defeat by Witton Albion and will be assessed before kick-off.

Goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy, who has made an impressive start at Bower Fold, is ruled out with concussion which means that Aidan Winterbottom will be between the sticks after featuring as an outfield substitute in the Matlock and Witton matches.

Manager Darren Kelly has a full squad to call on apart from long-term absentee Chris Sutherland. Tom Pratt has recovered from a broken toe and made a big impact at Mossley last week when he came on as a substitute.

CURZON ASHTON are another club with two players missing. They head for Harrogate Town without Chris Rowney and Niall Cummins, but safe in the knowledge that they have secured their National League North status for a fourth season.

Green-tech supplies Harrogate Garden for instant results
