Prompt: "Promise me you’ll still be here when I wake up."
Word Count: 1800+ Warnings: angst, comfort, minor auditory hallucinations, pain, headaches, minor fluff. Note: This is set in 1984 (Cold War Zombies timeline). Selena being recruited into the Requiem Strike Team post-Solovetsky. Ignore errors and typos, just happy to get more writing out 🩷
Lately, her sleeping patterns had improved but some nights were harder. Memories or dreams would hit Selena like a snap of lightning. Sending some pain and echoes throughout her mind.
It was frequent enough for the agent to learn to cope and hide her suffering. It embarrassed her. After Operation Greenlight and her time as “Bell”, the effects it had on her physical health still lingered.
But this night was a little tense for her. Selena was tossing fiercely and feeling soaked with a cold sweat. She couldn’t stay asleep, something in her mind was stirring. A pain began to brew in her brain when she could hear something. Whatever it was, it kept her mind occupied with muttering and it shook her awake.
It was a sound in her ear. A clattering noise. No, it was a clicking sound along the wall. It was far. But she could swear it was near. A whisper or a scratch.
Whatever it was, it was enough to cause her to get up.
Selena pulled the sheets off of her and sat up from the bed quickly. The pounding pain in her head and the slightest fluttery in her ears made Selena tremble while she walked to the bathrooms of the safe house.
Requiem didn’t splurge too much on the current base of operation for the strike team. It wasn’t much bigger than a small store, it was an unfinished office building. A skeleton of one. It had enough rooms and spaces for the team to have their rooms. Selena could appreciate the privacy on nights like this.
The cold water on her face didn’t help much, it only cooled her down just a bit. Selena splashed some more across her face and even pushed her dark hair back and slicked it into a ponytail. She didn’t look in the mirror to see how shaken she was and it was a light sound of a bell ringing in her ear that had her attention.
Her head snapped to the source but Selena knew it was only a haunting echo.
“It’s nothing. It’s not there anymore.” Selena told herself as she finally looked up in the mirror. Her eyes had a shine from the exhaustion and tears she was fighting back from her migraine, “I’m okay. You’re okay.”
After she tried to calm herself down Selena made her way out of the bathroom. Keeping her trembling hands to her side and hoping no one else was in the hallways. The last thing Selena wanted or needed was the Requiem strike team to worry. Or even maybe if her supervisors realize her mental state isn’t exactly to par, she just wasn’t cut out of the job.
While she rubbed her eyes hard, Selena jumped when she ran into something hard and solid.
Just her luck to run into Mason so late. Selena felt her chest swell and twist, wondering if she had woken him. He was in shorts and just a dark shirt, his neat hair kept in his silly hairnet. Alex loved his slick hair and took care of it.
 She loved that about him.
“Alex..” Selena sighed with the best smile possible.
“Woah,” The solid man was taken back when he caught her gaze, “Are you okay?”
He could see her shaken. When Selena looked up to her man, he saw the glistening brown eyes in the light. She was distressed when she stammered, “Yes, I’m.. fine. I just- just have a headache.”
“Oh, do you need anything?” Alex put a heavy hand on her shoulder. But when she shook her head and tried to dismiss him, he didn’t budge.
He knew this look of distress before as her breath became more rapid and shallow when Selena rubbed her face.
 “Selena, talk to me.”
With that soft request, she looked up to the captain. Her tearing eyes peered up to his. Selena was blinking to keep back the tears from her pounding headache while his soulful eyes looked her over. Asking her what else was wrong.
“I’m just.. I have a headache and I’m hearing things. But I think I am just tired, and I need rest.” Even when she forced a smile, Alex’s eyes still wondered her expression with a mournful sigh.
But when he reached his hand up to her face, to lift her chin, it was like a flash of something sharp and a searing pain in her eye that made her flinch away from his touch and almost yelp.
Immediately, Selena covered her mouth and felt sick. The woman frantically waved her free hand to dismiss her man when he became worried about her, “I’m fine, I’m sorry. Alex, I’m sorry. I just need to sleep.”
Her words are so hushed and shameful, even when Alex told her it was fine. That everything was okay. He knew this pain and knew her suffering better than anyone on their team. And Alex hated to see her like this, “Selena, are you sure you don’t need anything? I can go get-”
“No! No,” she rubbed her eyes, but there was that undistinguishable sound again just next to her. It almost made her forget the pain of her migraine when she quickly turned, “I keep hearing something..”
Her eyes began to snap around as if something was there and her colleague watched her closely. Selena stepped back once and listened carefully. Her hand up to keep him quiet as if he’d say something, “It’s like ringing or something?” Brown, tearful eyes locked on to Alex’s and she said, “I just need to sleep.”
She couldn’t risk her requiem colleagues to see her in such a stressed state.
But her delusions are her own and Alex’s concerned gaze made Selena worry he’d bring it up to Weaver.
He shook his head, but his slick dark hair stayed in its hairnet, “Okay, baby. Let me walk you..”
Her chest swelled with a slight heat when she heard his words. They brought so much comfort and a slight relief while he watched her closely and they made their back to her room.
“Thank you, Alex,” Selena gave him another forced smile and she wiped her face. She told him again she just needed some sleep.
 But Alex wasn’t as deterred.
When they arrived at her door, he carefully put his hand on her shoulder, “You know you’re not alone, right?” She peeked up to him again while he quietly said one more thing, “I’m here for you.”
“I know,” Selena responded to him. A soft and even melancholic tone in her shallow breath, “Goodnight, Alex.”
Once she was alone in her quarters, Selena drank a water bottle almost completely but still felt her hands trembling as she laid back down. She tried to think of anything to calm herself down, maybe her mother brushing her hair or her father dancing with her when it was raining outside.
Anything would be better than the clattering in her brain and the pain as she tried to sleep again.
Selena didn’t pay any attention to the time or how long she spent tossing while she kept the pillow over his head until there was a soft knock at her door.
When she crawled out of bed and got to the door, there was a tall man in a silly hairnet with a pillow and some blankets in hand and he said, “Can I come in?”
 “What are you doing?”
His voice is soft and hushed, “I want to stay with you. Well I mean, if you’ll have me.”
The woman huffed and rolled her eyes, amused when he stood there at her door. It brought a warm and happy feeling over while she looked up to his soulful eyes, reminding her of a moment just like this years ago.
Selena nodded and laid back onto her small bed, “You know I have no space on this little cot, right?”
But he didn’t plan to sleep in her small bed. He said they’d either break it or it would flip over and they would both be on the ground.
“No, Alex. You’re not sleeping on the floor.”
But he wouldn’t have any of it, “Selena, I’ll be okay, Alex smiled at her even when she was arguing with him over it. She wouldn’t have him on the ground but he was already setting up his own little pallet just at the edge of her bed.
The requisitions weren’t the best so Selena could only imagine how he laid on an itchy looking so called comforter and a flat pillow, with a thin sheet for a blanket.
But Alex didn’t listen when she once again said to take the bed or that they could squeeze in.
Selena’s trembling had lessened and the terrible headache had become somewhat bearable when she watched her man smile at her and shrug.
Saying, “You need your space right now,” he already began to get settled and laid down just by her, “Now, get some rest, baby.”
His words and the tender gaze he gave her were enough to shut her up about sharing the bed. He was right. Her pain was there still and the constant noise just behind it was still lingering. But it subsided a little when he entered and her mind relaxed around Alex.
After some time passed, Selena was still a bit restless. Ignoring the faint sounds in the back of her mind while she let her hand hang off the bed and reaching for Alex’s. She hummed happily when she felt his hand tangle with hers. A thumb grazing her knuckles.
“It does get easier. It doesn’t go away but it gets easier to live with,” Alex told her with a slight drowsiness in his voice. His eyes snapping up to hers.
“I know,” Selena told him while she still kept her hand tangled with him.
When he told her to try to get some rest once more, he reminded her, “I meant it. You’re not alone and I’ll be here.”
His words of comfort made Selena’s chest warm and her dark eyes filled with tears she tried to fight when she asked him quietly “You promise?”
Alex lets a soft hum, “what?”
“Promise me you’ll still be here when I wake up,” Selena looked over the edge to him, her hand now almost squeezing his.”
He picked his head up and eyed her as best he could in the dark room.
 “Yes, I promise.”
She tried not to cry. Selena sniffled to hide it and smiled at him while the captain did the same.
“Alex Mason, my hero, huh?” Selena said while she laid on her bed. At the edge of her cot, just by Alex on the ground.
 “That’s me.”
He would understand better than most the suffering she has endured since Solovetsky and she was grateful to have Alex there with her. And especially when it brought so much comfort in moments like this.
