Galactica, Chapter 61 (Group Fic) - TheDane/Veronica
A/N: Click here if you’re looking for previous chapters (or here if you’d rather read on AO3). 💫
Last Chapter: Violet opened up, Alaska chickened out, and Courtney finally had her date with Bianca.
This Chapter: Trixie widens his search for Aiden’s replacement, and Courtney gets a taste of the good life.
***
Courtney doodled absentmindedly on her notepad during Miss Fame’s Monday conference call. She was getting an update from the company that ran her European stores, and discussing the upcoming marketing plan with Alyssa. Courtney knew that she was only there in case Miss Fame wanted to add anyone to the line; since Ivy and Laganja were both on the call, she didn’t really need to be paying attention. She probably should’ve been anyway, but this was a case where a little negligence would be forgiven.
Which was good, because she couldn’t stop her mind from wandering, daydreaming about how wonderful the weekend had been with Bianca. Adore had come over on Sunday for dinner, after which Courtney almost went home, but Bianca pulled her in for an embrace and insisted that she stay another night. When she’d worried about not having any appropriate work clothes, Bianca promised to find her something from her own closet, even excited at the notion of styling her for the office.
At first, Courtney was a bit concerned about whether the thigh-high black boots were too hookerish, but Bianca was adamant that they were fashion - and she should know, right? At least her luxurious knit dress was in Fame’s approved color palette, so she was pretty sure she wouldn’t get scolded like the time she dared to wear a lime green top.
She looked down at her notebook, realizing that it was absolutely covered in hearts, and quickly flipped the page, embarrassed.
She clicked on her mouse, waking up the computer to check her emails. If she was gonna space out, she may as well make at least a halfhearted attempt at productivity. She saw that there were a few unread DMs and clicked on the window.
ROXY: Package here for you
ROXY: A big-ass box from Neiman Marcus
ROXY: From the Marie Claire messenger again
ROXY: You gonna tell me who you’re dating over there now?
COURTNEY: LOL, sorry. It’s brand new, I don’t think we’re ready to go public
ROXY: Bitch it’s just me, I can keep a secret
COURTNEY: Since when?????
ROXY: Since always!!
COURTNEY: On Friday, you told me that Jaida is getting IVF and Alyssa’s son is in rehab again
ROXY: Yeah and yet you tell me NOTHING
COURTNEY: LOL. Okay well when we’re telling people, I’ll tell you first. Deal?
ROXY: WHATEVER
*
ROXY: Another major delivery came for Fame’s asst from MC today
SHANNEL: OMG. BDR just came into Nina’s office in the weirdest mood. She was all smiley and she approved this dumb spread that Nina’s been pitching for 3 months.
ROXY: 21 year old pussy is good for the soul
SHANNEL: APPARENTLY
*
The second she could get up, Courtney raced to reception to grab the package, wondering what it could be. They’d put together a bunch of outfits with the stylist this weekend, most of which were still at Bianca’s--except for her ensemble for the party tomorrow, which was hanging in a garment bag on the coat rack, partially covered by Courtney’s jacket so as not to be too conspicuous.
When Roxy said “a big-ass box,” she wasn’t lying. Courtney’s eyes widened as she spotted the box, quickly taking it back to her own office, peeking inside while Fame was occupied with Raja. She pulled out the note first.
Stay warm. XX, B PS Don’t worry, the fur is faux
Extra curious now, Courtney reached into the box, lifting the tissue paper to see what was inside and finally just pulling it out--a beautiful, full-length, raspberry-colored winter coat with a fur-trimmed hood. Her eyes nearly bulged out of her head as the utter extravagance of it all.
COURTNEY: OMG Bianca!
BIANCA: Do you like it?
COURTNEY: It’s beautiful! But it’s way too much. You’re spoiling me.
BIANCA: Get used to it ;)
Courtney smiled to herself, hiding the box under the table and standing to try on the coat, positively glowing with happiness. She glanced at herself in the mirror that Fame kept by the door for “last looks,” and saw that it fit her perfectly, even across her narrow shoulders, almost as if it was tailored to her body. Which...now that she thought about it, the stylist on Saturday had taken her measurements, so maybe it was.
Just then, the door to Fame’s office opened and Raja stepped out. Courtney whirled around, a guilty expression on her face.
“Oh are...are you done? I was, um...just going to get Miss Fame another coffee.”
“Yeah, we’re done for now, you should probably stick around. Nice coat,” Raja said, brushing past her on her way out. “I’ll be back at 2 to finish. Make sure she’s fed.”
“Okay, thank-” Courtney began, finishing with “-you,” just as Raja breezed from the room.
Courtney slowly removed her new coat, hanging it carefully on the rack before heading into Miss Fame’s office to ask what she wanted for lunch.

Bob closed the door to Trixie’s office behind him, making a beeline towards the coffee machine. It was mid afternoon, and while there still was a bit of a home stretch to go before the holiday break, the tough decisions ahead were out of his hands.
“All I’m saying Chachki,” Jovan smiled, the man leaning against the wall. He was wearing orange trumpet pants and a blue fuzzy sweater. “Is that I can totally bedazzle your crutches.”
“What an amazing offer,” Violet drawled, her tone completely dry.
“Hey guys!” Bob grinned, sliding in next to Maxwell, his boyfriend handing the cup he had just poured. “What are we talking about?”
“The Christmas Party,” Maxwell smiled, looking up at Bob who gave him a quick peck. He was wearing a pink shirt, the cotton stretched across his chest, the khakis he wore all year looking delicious on his pert little ass.
“Right!” Bob took a sip. The Galactica Christmas Party was one of the biggest fashion events in December, Miss Fame always going all out. Bob had heard rumors around town that there’d be gigantic ice sculptures, but Roxy had told him she had seen order confirmations for a forest of Christmas trees.
Some called him and Roxy the office gossip sluts, and if the name fit, Bob wasn’t going to complain.
“I haven’t decided what I’m wearing yet.” Violet was sitting on a chair, her curled hair fastened with a golden clip, her skirt just above her knees. “This is the first time I’m not going as Fame’s assistant and I don’t have to match her or blend into the background.”
That made sense, Bob really noticing how Violet’s wardrobe had shifted from the uptight prissy bitch who had first entered their floor, more color and sharp cuts showing up in Violet’s clothes as she got to express herself more and more.
“But since there’s a good chance she’ll actually look at me since I’m going with Sutan, I have to stay on theme without being flashy or cheap or one of the million other things she refuses to accept.”
“The bedazzling offer still stands,” Jovan smiled, taking the last bite of his afternoon muffin, and Violet rolled her eyes.
“How did you two meet anyway?” Maxwell took a sip of his coffee. “You and Sutan I mean.”
Bob perked up immediately, his stomach doing a happy flip.
“Oh?” Violet looked surprised, like she genuinely hadn’t expected them to be interested. “You want to hear about that?”
“Yes!” Bob grinned. “Yes yes yes yes.”
He and Maxwell had been discussing how to get Violet to spill the dirt the entire week, and now, the chance was finally here.
“Well.” Violet paused, tapping her fingers on the table, like she was trying to decide if she should share, and Bob was about to burst with curiosity.
“Spill it!”
“He bought me a drink at the Vogue Fashion Fund, and asked me on a date a few days later.”
Bob waited for a beat, but Violet was simply smiling.
“What?! That’s it?!”
Of all the things Bob had imagined, this was by far the most disappointing answer.
“Pretty much.” Violet shrugged, taking a sip of her coffee with a glint in her eyes.

“So yeah, these are the ones I like...what do you think?” Trixie asked, chewing nervously on the inside of his cheek. “I really need to find someone that Fame will love, she was so annoyed at the last batch.”
As Pearl picked up one of the portfolios to glance through it, she couldn’t help but notice how rough her friend looked, like he hadn’t slept in a week. He probably hadn’t, she realized, the tension in the apartment so thick you could cut it with a knife. She’d been trying to give them both space, but maybe that wasn’t a good idea.
“So, um…” She looked through the first portfolio and then picked up the next one, pausing on pages she found interesting. “Is everything okay? How are you?”
“Uhh…” Trixie scratched his head, then finally said, “It’s been a hard week.”
“I’m sorry, man.”
“It’s okay,” Trixie sighed. “We’ve got our- She’s got an appointment with a doctor tomorrow. So I guess, after that, we’ll know for sure.”
“Right.”
He didn’t seem to want to talk about it any more, so Pearl dropped the subject for the moment. She pointed to one of the photos, a stunning blue piece with dramatic shoulders, exactly the type of shapes to which Fame was generally drawn.
“This is amazing.”
“Yeah, right? She seems super talented, although I worry that she’s only been out of school for less than a year. A little green, a little…” Trixie sighed again, “Over-confident sounds mean, but…over-confident.”
“Have you spoken to all of them yet?”
“Yeah, Rita checked all their references and I had Skype interviews with all the top candidates this morning. We’re trying to move quickly, I really need to get the ball rolling before we shut down for the holidays. And with the added bonus of getting them a visa...it could be a mess. Anyway, these are the very best, but I don’t want to put them in front of Fame unless they’re actually gonna impress her.”
“Uh huh. One question though…”
“Sure.”
“Are you looking for another sociopath, or are we moving in a new direction?” Pearl asked, a teasing smirk on her face.
“You’re hilarious,” Trixie deadpanned.
“I know.” Pearl tapped on the folder, saying, “I think this one is special. There’s a lot of range, and new ideas, but very classic and chic at the same time.”

“Ho...ly shit…” Bianca said, the door to her town car open, watching Courtney twirl in her new coat, then open it to give her a peek at the sexy sequined mini-dress underneath. Bianca pulled her into the car, giggling, a hand immediately sliding up her bare thigh.
She was mildly surprised when her fingers came into contact with soft cotton instead of the sexy lace she’d been wearing.
“Wow, these feel...breathable.”
Courtney laughed. “Yeah, well, I’m out of fancy underwear until my next trip to the laundromat. Sorry about it.”
“Nah, I like them. Reminds me of college.” She flashed a grin at Courtney, who was now straddling her on the leather seat, arms around her neck.
“Yeah?” Courtney tilted her head, teasingly evading a kiss as Bianca chased her lips.
“Mmm…” Bianca’s fingers slipped into the panties, squeezing her ass.
“I like this, too…” Bianca’s own coat was unbuttoned since the driver had the heat on full blast, and Courtney ran her thumb along the neckline of her blazer. “You look so sexy…”
Bianca said nothing, just gave her a wicked smirk, lips finally coming into contact with her neck, lingering there, hot breath against her pulse point making her whimper.
“We should probably wait until after the-” Courtney inhaled sharply, clutching Bianca’s shoulders. “-after the party.”
“Alright, alright…” Bianca acquiesced, pressing a soft kiss to her lips and removing her hands. “I can be good if you can.”
“Debatable,” Courtney responded, her eyes flashing with a naughty glint as she sat down beside Bianca, snuggling up against her.
“It’ll be a fun little experiment.”

Violet was standing in Sutan’s closet in her pajamas, flipping through her clothes, her lip between her teeth.
None of it looked right, and Violet had given up on even trying on the dress she had originally gotten to go as Fame’s assistant, the skirt's mermaid cut making it impossible to move in with her crutches.
If her foot hadn’t been broken, she would have trawled her preferred vintage shops weeks ago, or would even have made a dress herself, but the party was in two days, and because of Bianca’s birthday, she couldn’t even empty her savings account to get a dress that could live up to the expectations of a Galactica party.
She was completely, and utterly, fucked.
“Fuck,” Violet sighed, dumping down in the arm chair Sutan had been sweet enough to move to his closet so she could sit.
“Violet? Are you okay?”
Violet cursed to herself, Sutan naturally catching her at a moment where it absolutely did not suit her.
“I’m okay!”
But of course, it wasn’t in Sutan’s nature to leave her alone, her boyfriends head poking through the door seconds later, a concerned expression on his dumb face.
“What’s gotten into you?” Sutan was fresh from the shower, his black and grey hair in an unstyled cloud around his head.
“You’re going to laugh.” Violet crossed her arms, the annoyance still under her skin, rolling around her body.
“Try me.” Sutan stepped inside, a towel wrapped around his hips, his hand holding it in place.
“I don’t have anything to wear.”
Sutan snorted, and Violet pointed at him.
“See!” She exclaimed. “Don’t make fun of me!”
“Okay, okay, I admit that wasn’t my greatest moment,” Sutan chuckled, giving her a quick apology kiss, Violet sinking back into the chair as he walked over to his dresser. “but the good news is that your problem is easily fixable.”
“I can’t just go out and buy a new dress.” Violet tried not to roll her eyes, tried not to make this a fight, but it was like Sutan had decided to press every single button she had. “I can’t afford it.”
Sure, she had gotten a pay bump after moving to design, but she had already used her December budget on Christmas gifts for everyone, actually spending the day with people so much more expensive than what she usually did, which was a movie on her ancient laptop and wine by herself.
“Who says you have to pay for it?” Sutan pulled a pair of pajama pants out, throwing his towel to the side, now naked which would have been weird if Violet hadn’t been used to years of dressing rooms. “I’m planning on getting a new suit anyway,” Sutan balanced on one leg, pulling the pants on, “and the shoppers at Barney’s are great at what they do.”
“Are you serious?”
“What makes you think I’m not?”  Violet watched as Sutan pulled a t-shirt on too, running a hand through the hair Violet knew he’d struggle to style in the morning, but that he was also done dealing with it for the night.
“I don’t want your money.” Violet sighed, sitting up in the chair, Sutan finally ready for bed.
She liked staying with Sutan, she really did, the man kinder and more generous than Violet could ever have imagined, but she was also longing to go back to her own place, to have her own space and to spend time completely alone.
She knew her apartment wasn’t much, that it didn’t have air condition or an elevator, that she didn’t have a memory foam mattress or a dishwasher or a housekeeper that came to clean, but it was hers.
Violet knew a psychiatrist would probably consider her need for independence a flaw, something she should work on, but she didn’t want to rely on anyone ever, not even Sutan.
“I can figure it out.”
“Oh that, I don’t doubt,” Sutan smiled, holding a hand out to help Violet out of the chair. “But there is a difference,” Sutan pulled, his hand finding her hip as soon as she was upright. “Between being prideful and being stubborn, lovely eyes.”
Violet shot him a look, and Sutan laughed, giving her nose a quick kiss.
“I’m offering to buy you dresses, not a penthouse.”
Violet opened her mouth to protest, but for once, Sutan was faster.
“You’re going to several parties for my sake. Let me spend money on you.” Sutan rubbed his thumb up and down, gently caressing Violet’s hip. “Please?”
“I’ll consider it.”

Being at this elite music industry party with Bianca was thrilling, and Courtney was on cloud nine. She was beside herself with excitement when she got to meet Charlie Hides, unable to stop herself from gushing about her work on Tove Lo’s album.
“Well thank you, darling,” Charlie said.
“Courtney’s a singer too,” Bianca added, and Charlie’s face perked up a bit.
“Oh yeah?”
“Well, aspiring,” Courtney couldn’t help admitting, immediately kicking herself for her inability to fake it.
“She’s incredibly talented,” Bianca said, a hand touching Courtney’s elbow, grounding her.
“You should send me your demo,” Charlie said, picking up two glasses of champagne from a passing tray and handing them over.
“Really? Thank you so much!” Courtney exclaimed, momentarily forgetting that she didn’t have a demo.
“Sure thing,” Charlie said with a grin, before excusing herself to greet another guest. Before she left, she gave Bianca a hug, muttering, “Very cute, B.”
After she walked away, Bianca turned to Courtney with a smirk. “She’s subtle, huh?”
“I think I’m gonna pass out,” Courtney said, and Bianca squeezed her hand.
“You’ll be fine. You’re doing great,” she assured her. “I see another producer I know, let’s say hello. Olivia!”
She waved across the party to a beautiful Black woman with the most fabulous hair Courtney had ever seen in her life. The woman looked up, sending Bianca a beaming smile as she crossed the room to greet her.
“Bianca!”
“Hey Liv, I haven’t seen you in forever!” Bianca said, giving her a hug.
“I know! I’ve been in L.A. for most of the year. Just decided to come back to New York in time for this delightful gray sleet we’ve been having,” Olivia said, that dazzling smile softening her words.
Bianca laughed, turning to Courtney.
“Court, Olivia Lux is an awesome producer. Liv, this my friend Courtney. She’s a singer.”
“Hi!” Courtney prepared for a handshake or some air kisses, only to be swept up into a warm hug. “So nice to meet you!”
“Charlie wants to hear a demo, but she hasn’t gotten the chance to record anything yet,” Bianca said. “Any chance you’re free? Or are you still booked up solid until the end of days?”
“No, I’ve got some time in January. What kind of music do you do, sweetie?” Olivia asked, turning to Courtney with that lovely smile.
“Um… Well, I guess it’s kind of like… Pop, but kind of folk?” Courtney said, trying to think on her feet.  “Like Joni Mitchell meets Kylie Minogue?”
“Sounds absolutely glorious!” Olivia said, and Courtney felt her confidence grow. “I know what it’s like when you’re starting out. That shit is terrifying.”
“I’m gonna go grab us some drinks…You two have fun,” Bianca said, leaving Courtney Olivia to talk shop.
After a couple of minutes, Courtney found herself feeling like she was with an old friend. She was just so warm and open, telling Courtney about her own career as first a recording artist, then a producer and composer, making her feel completely at ease--and shockingly interested in Courtney’s own musical taste. When Bianca returned with three cocktails, Olivia put an arm around Courtney and told her, “I’m in love with your friend.”
“Oh yeah?” Bianca said, amused. She handed them both drinks, adding, “Glad you guys are getting along.”
“Getting along? We’re gonna elope,” Olivia said, and Courtney giggled, smiling brightly, happy to have found someone so kind and down to earth.
“Mazel Tov,” said Bianca, giving Courtney a wink.
“Seriously though,” Olivia said, turning to flash Courtney that megawatt smile again. “Why don’t you hit me up and we’ll arrange for you to come into the studio?”
“That would be amazing!” said Courtney. She was so happy, she had to fight an urge to kiss the bottom of Olivia’s glittery heels.
“Perfect!” Olivia said, leaving them both with another round of hugs.
“That went well,” Bianca said, smirking at Courtney over the top of her glass.
“Yeah!”
“Come on, I want you to meet my friend Derrick. She’s a choreographer…”
Later, after about the 20th intro, Courtney began to catch on to a troubling pattern.
“Hey guys! This is my friend Courtney…”
“Meet my friend Courtney…”
“Courtney’s a friend of my sister.”
Friend, friend, friend...
At no point, to anyone, did Bianca say (or even imply) that there was something going on between them-- and Courtney wasn’t sure what to make of it. It wasn’t like she expected for Bianca to call her “my girlfriend.”
They hadn’t had that conversation, and something told Courtney that after tonight, it was a long way off.
She tried to put it right out of her head, though, and focus on the positive. She was at a great party, meeting a ton of music industry professionals, and yeah, maybe Bianca called her “friend” about 800 times, but friends were good, right? Especially considering how much Bianca loved her friends.
She continued to enjoy herself, greeting people, trying her best to learn their names, and just being grateful that Bianca had even brought her through the door. So what if she didn’t want people to know about their relationship? Or if this was just a casual fling for her? She was still doing more for Courtney and being more supportive than anyone she’d ever known.
It was close to 2 am when Bianca put a hand on her lower back and leaned in close--the most intimate gesture since they’d walked in the door.
“You ready to take off?” Bianca whispered.
“Sure,” Courtney said, slightly relieved since she could feel her own energy fading, and knew that making it to work by 7:45 the next day would be a struggle.
They said goodbye to Charlie and grabbed their coats, making their way downstairs to the waiting towncar. It wasn’t until they were on their way that Courtney really let everything hit her, tears welling up in her eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I…” Courtney swallowed.
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.
“You sure about that? What’s wrong?”
Courtney shook her head vigorously as traitorous tears slipped down her cheek. “Nothing’s wrong, everything’s perfect.” She wiped her face, disgusted with herself.
“Then why are you crying, angel?”
“Because…” Courtney squeezed her eyes shut,  positive that she was about to ruin everything. “Because you’re just…making all my dreams come true.”
“Okay. Yeah, I can see how that would be upsetting.”
“No, it’s just…I'm scared, that it’s all gonna disappear,” Courtney said, now unable to hold back the river of tears. “You’re gonna get bored, or meet someone else, and I…I’m falling for you so hard and I know it’s too fast and I-”
“Hey, look at me.”
Courtney turned to her, eyes liquid, sniffling.
“I have been having…the best time with you,” she said, taking one of Courtney’s hands in both of hers. “And I know that it’s still new, but I said that I’d help you with your career and I will. No matter what happens with us. I promise. And I don’t break promises. Okay?”
Courtney nodded slightly, then asked, “Why don’t you want people to know about us? Are you ashamed? Are you just...already looking for a way out?”
“What?”
“You just kept introducing me as your ‘friend’ all night, and I just thought that it meant you don’t care about us, or that-”
“No! I dunno, I guess we haven’t really talked about labels, and I wanted to make sure everyone took you seriously,” Bianca said. “Took your talent seriously.”
“Oh.” Courtney sniffled, feeling a little stupid for letting her insecurites get the better of her.
“Also…you know, a lot of the people there were…mutual friends of…”
“Of?”
Bianca sighed slightly, a sheepish smile on her face, then said, “I guess it’s time to come clean to Fame and Raja, huh?”
“Really?” Courtney looked at her with surprise.
“Well, yeah. I don’t want us to feel like we’re sneaking around. That shit gets old real fast.” Bianca kissed the back of her hand. “I’ve been selfish, I was trying to do this without getting them annoyed at me, but…It’s not worth it if it makes you feel like I don’t care. Because I do.”
Courtney bit her lip, feeling like she might burst into tears again, but this time from joy. She took a deep breath, trying to get her racing heart to calm down.
“When do you want to tell them?”
“Well…the Galactica party’s on Thursday. Wanna be my date?” Bianca asked, a sly smile deepening her dimples.
Of course, they’d both been planning to go to the party, but Courtney had resigned herself to the idea that they’d be there separately. She’d even asked Tati to come as her plus one, not believing for a second that going with Bianca was a possibility. After all, it was so soon.
“That’s in two days!” Courtney exclaimed, eyes wide.
“Yeah… Does that work for you?”
For a second, Courtney felt almost dizzy, imagining walking into the party on Bianca’s arm. There was no way in hell that it wouldn’t cause a stir...but the idea of everyone seeing them together, while a bit frightening, was also terribly exciting.
“Okay. Yeah, that sounds...perfect,” she said, eyes shining happily.
“Okay then,” Bianca said softly, pressing a kiss to Courtney’s cheek.

Going out in a different country than my native was scary at the beginning. Although I loved the idea of travelling the world alone, actually doing it was significantly different than imagining it and having fun was quite a challenge. The risks were higher. I am a woman, I live alone and I move on my own, if something happens to me it would take a few hours or days maybe to get my family notified. Of course being 24 years old is socially considered that you’re old enough to take care of yourself, and I did. It’s just I was starting my dreamed adult life at the other end of the continent and with no one to trust near me.
When I first arrived in Los Angeles everything was so big and alive all the time. There was no way I would remain inside my apartment, especially not after working hard during the weekdays. Now there came the thing with making new friends in a country where people were quite the opposite of mine (or so I’d been told). You see, leaving aside the fact that “my people” was emotionally attached to everyone; North Americans weren’t exactly presented to me as… affable. So I had been kind of insecure about how I would become friends with anyone. That’s why I sometimes found it difficult to believe I’d come across someone like David.
-x-
Tonight’s bar had been chosen by Dave. The place had great music and, although it looked pretty expensive and kind of exclusive, it seemed a good option for having fun. David’s friends were teasing him by the place selection and I laughed at his failed attempts to defend it as we were all crossing the streets towards the club’s fancy gates. Dave was such an interesting guy, one of those you don’t get to meet and stick with. Don’t get me wrong he is cool, respectful and fun to be around, but I’ve been here barely for a bit longer than a year and since I met him he’s been inviting me to parties and to tag along with his friends all the time. So what I mean when I say he’s one of those persons so good you don’t get to meet and stick with, I mean I don’t know what he’s seen in me to want me in his close circle.
—Guys c’mon the place is okay… give him a break. —my words were followed by a smile.
I immediately felt Dave’s strong dark-skinned arm surrounding my neck and pulling me towards him. He kissed my hair and shouted to the others “I told you this one was a keeper”.
—Well if you keep suggesting this kind of places you’re gonna scare her off! —Elizabeth, one of the girls from the group answered and then different laughs were heard.
I turned my head with my smile still plastered on my face and saw my friend’s face. He was actually pouting. I shook his hair making him push me off so I wouldn’t mess his dreadlocks (even more than they already were).
—They all whine about my places but they all have a pic with their fav stars because of me and my places…
I let out a small laugh and shrugged my shoulders. Dave was such a cool guy and so easy going that somehow he had become quite popular among some famous people living here in LA. Well of course he also had a lot of money.
The group had distanced a few meters from us and when we were getting on the sidewalk he took a good look at my outfit and remained silent. I was observing him with a look that read “what are you going to say?”. He nodded no with his head to look me in the eyes after.
—What? —I couldn’t erase my smile from my face nor from my voice. I felt happy.
He laughed a bit —Nothing. I’m just wondering how long will it take for some guy to take you away from me gurl… Actually I’m kind of surprised it hasn’t happened yet… It’s been months since I met you.
—Oh stop it now nigga—Nah nah, just promise you won’t forget about me in a week once you got yourself a man!
I hit him slightly on his shoulder and rolled my eyes. —You know perfectly well what I think about the boyfriend thing. —He laughed and walked in front of me and the others to tell the security guard his name. Yes, Dave had a few privileges.
We instantly got inside and the atmosphere changed abruptly. The room was dim and misty with some green and blue lights moving around. The song playing was some tropical electro, chill. Being the drunk asses we were obviously the first thing we did was hurry to the bartender to overload him with orders.
-x-
Okay so far the night was great. We’d been drinking at a table until the place was full. It didn’t take much more than an hour after we got in. Every now and then somebody would go greet some acquaintance or famous person and come back. In my case, I only saw some recognizable faces from TV programs or stuff but I couldn't care less honestly. I had enough high society people in my job every weekday so… Dave was the only one who barely spent time with the group as he kept running into friends.
Music and alcohol were starting to get to me, not that I was hard to get into the party mood. My body was asking for some dancing moves. I took one of the girls, called Minette, by her arm and carried us both to the dance floor. We hadn’t been there even for 5 minutes and the music turned a totally different path. When we glanced at the Dj, Minette and I shared a look of understanding.
—He’s unbelievable right? —I nodded with my head as a response and let my latin blood take the lead.
Dave was next to the Dj and apparently, he had asked him for something more… let’s say: Caribbean. Minette had latin blood mixed in her veins too so we didn’t have a problem moving our hips and not giving a shit about the condescending looks we were receiving, especially from other girls upset by some guys staring at us. At some time, a Mexican boy had joined us and we were laughing and dancing a lot, finding ourselves in a state of euphoria. Then the Dj picked a particular song that I couldn’t resist dancing with all my energy and I gave myself to it. My body was then covered by a thin layer of sweat because of the rapid movements. Going up and down, jumping, shaking my hips and my waist had definitely gotten the best of me.A moment later, Dave came next to me laughing and giving me sweet looks.
—C’mon let’s get you some water gurl, I don’t want you dehydrated. —he was leading me towards our table pushing me gently by my lower back so I wouldn’t get lost between so many people. We were almost at the table when we heard someone say ‘Yo! Dave!’ behind us. We both turned to look and saw this lanky guy with at least three chains hanging by his neck.
—Yooooo what’d up man?! —Dave went to hug the guy and his 4 friends sitting next to him. I was just looking from behind but my gaze stopped on one of them. I recognized he was an actor, but I didn’t know his name. I remembered seeing him in a few movies. The guy was cute. White skin, perfect nose, deep bulging almond-shaped brown eyes, plump pink limps… Jeez.
I hadn’t realized I had unconsciously stared and my lungs had stopped working the air out. Maybe it was the music, maybe the alcohol or the extremely delightful sight I had in front of me, or maybe it was all together what was making me sweat even more, my pupils dilated. I felt a rush of heat run down my body. I felt like I needed some fresh air. I was about to leave to look for an open space but unluckily, David had catched me glancing at this guy, which got my friend grabbing me by the arm and posing me in front of him to present me.
This is my friend Virginia. —he gave me a look and smiled mischievously. I greeted with my hand not moving even one step from my place and mumbling a shy “hi” loud enough to be heard and received their greetings along with a nod plus an intense look from the pretty boy. If my eyes were not tricking me, he might even have shown a little sided-smile. Damn I was done.
I just walked away on my heels following the fresh air and getting to a secluded area for smokers. I lit a cigarette and looked up at the sky. I took a deep breath and tried to forget about the gorgeous face I just saw. I knew I had not like, the minimal chance to be with this boy who’s name I didn’t even know, but which also unfortunately excited me even more.
I was finishing my cigarette when a male voice said my name. When I turned to see him I was a bit taken aback.
—Uhm… Hi
—Hey, name is Nick.
I nodded once.
He looked inside the club and then at me again. A smile reached his face before his eyes reached mine.
—Do you have a lighter?
I looked for it in my purse and handed it to him. If I thought I was done before, then with a cig between his lips, looking all bad boy, his eyes so full of mystery and that damned smile…
Out of a sudden my glance flickered over the inside of the club and I swear I saw Dave smiling evilly. I rolled my eyes and signaled my middle finger to him, obviously causing him to laugh out loud. My head turned to give another glimpse. Damn wasn’t he a sexy piece of work…
I was caught by him anew. Once again his dangerous smile making an appearance on his perfect cutis… Unintentionally, my lashes went up slowly. We found ourselves sharing a kind of trance. Our eyes were acting upon themselves, provoking each other. He sucked in his bottom lip between his teeth and slowly let it go. And that’s when I lost it.
—I need a  drink. —I thanked the Universe for walking towards the bar on my own without the need of my brain processing that information because I just didn’t give it time to do so.
Luckily I got across the room hurriedly without interruptions. The guy prepared my drink. At the moment he spotted my glass “Nick” was next to me. My head turned to let my eyeballs get fascinated by this boy.
Excuse me —the bartender nodded before going away to serve someone else —I’m sorry, can I have a vodka shot too, please?
The little glass was in front of me waiting to be downloaded quicker than my previous order. Just after sending a quick peek towards Nick I took the tiny glass and emptied it hastily. I felt his brown eyes on me. I knew he was following my every move. Once I had taken that anxiety off myself I dared to truly look at him and lock eyes. The guy wouldn’t back away.
—Are you being a creep following me over, Nick?
He held his hands up in surrender —Take it easy girl. I just thought we could do something about… this weird chemistry taking place between us —he made a signal moving his right hand between our bodies.
I raised my right eyebrow in a swift. —Oh really? What chemistry are you talking about? —shit I couldn’t even control myself. My body naturally drew itself closer to him. Alcohol and lust were controlling me.
His eyes darted on my tight black dress from bottom to top until he landed on my eyes again. Then he eyed the place as if he was checking for everything to be okay. I didn’t understand this attitude at first but then I remembered he was kinda famous and he probably didn't want anyone knowing about his night with some random girl. I took a few deep sips from my drink closing my eyes, I needed the nerves to disappear and what better than my dear liquid friend to do it.
His right arm signaled a path and I walked in that way. The moment he was behind me his hands fell on my waist to guide me. They weren’t even touching my skin and I already could feel my body reacting to them. We ended up in a darker side of the club. There were some couples making out and smaller groups of people chatting. I laid my back against a cold white wall, letting the wall’s temperature contrast with my own, causing my eyes to close at the good feeling. A second later I opened them and found him right in front of me, close. Even with my high heels he was taller than me so our eyes were almost at the same level. His brown irises with his black dilated pupils made him look like a predator watching over his prey. But here’s the thing, I wasn't a prey. Either this was a predator-predator thing or he was about to become the prey.
Before I could do anything he moved his mouth near my ear so he could speak up and I’d listen over the loud music.
—You’re driving me crazy.
When he backed up, a serious look could be seen on his face. I couldn't help myself. It was my time to smile dangerously. I finished up my drink and left the glass somewhere before flashing my arms at his soft neck and shoulders. His beautiful eyes glanced down at my lips and came back up to my eyes quickly over and over again. His hands were gaining confidence in my waist by each minute that passed. His tongue glided over his pink bottom lip making it look even more desirable. My eyes were glued to that movement and to the wet lips.
I swear I was going to change positions and put him against the wall. I swear I was going to show him I was in charge here but the moment his body came crashing into mine I forgot everything. The moment my lips felt his and his humid tongue my mind went blank. His head was moving against mine. Our tongues were colliding, giving new sensations to each other. My fingers were drawn into his soft brown locks and his hands squeezed my waist as if his life depended on it. When I thought it couldn't get better it did. He fucking dared to moan into the kiss. How was I supposed to deal with that amount of sensuality?
His tongue pushed itself inside my mouth at the same time he pressed himself against me while I was pressed against the concrete, his groin making friction. Air. I interrupted the kiss and looked up at the ceiling as I took a deep breath, my lungs were burning. His hair ended up pretty messy and it looked even better, if possible. How could this boy get hotter by every minute that passed? His breathing was heavy too. His cheeks had turned very pink and now his once cute innocent eyes were so dark you could get lost in them. Dopamine was written all over his look. I felt a black hole was swallowing me. And hell knew I was ready to let it take me.

sweeney todd manila review
okay, just a heads up, i don’t know much about sweeney todd outside of this production and of what little bits i’ve heard of the other productions, so this won’t be the most professional review. i watched the show on the twentieth of october and i believe the whole cast was there.
btw, this is gonna be really messy bc i still have lots of stuff to do so i’m speed typing this review out KDDLJF.
(hello, @thegirlisuedtobe, this is for you! sorry if this is very late, i was really busy!)
- the set is phenomenal. before the show started, there was the sound of rain while smoke scattered across the stage. it really gave off a very eerie vibe to the show, even if it hasn’t started, and i give huge props to the set designers for setting the tone of the musical!
- here’s what amazed me the most about the set-- FLOATING CARS. there were cars hanging up on strings and just... wow. absolutely breathtaking. there was also an upperstage that was build particularly for this musical which was also well done as well. on stage left, there was this platform in particular that intrigued me because it was slanted and only had a railing that could possibly reach below your thigh. it was risky, i might say, and because of that, huge appreciation to the cast because they were able to maneuver themselves on that platform without slipping or injuring themselves.
- another interesting prop which i’m sure many of you have seen in promos was the red car that both mrs lovett and sweeney todd used. in my opinion, at first glance, the car looked cool, but there were some pros and cons.
- pros of the car: the car gave some kind of edginess to the musical. the main characters rode the car into the stage as their introduction and it really left a good impact! additionally, i loved the way how they moved the car around. all transitions were so smooth and commendable and i praise the designer who thought of all of these up.
- cons of the car: it was awkward when the setting was at the bakery of mrs lovett. the car represented the second floor of the building and the chair of sweeney’s barbershop merely rested on top of the car. it was... kinda confusing at first, especially when it is really up to the audience on how they want to interpret the murders that occurred on the car (more on that later). additionally, the car served as a weird divider to the shop, the bakehouse, and the barbershop, and honestly, they should’ve placed the barbershop on the upperstage instead of on top of the car. (gurl, when i say i was confused, i say i was confused.)
- the keep your cellphone message was really funny to me but... kinda long? like it was so unnecessarily long that i was confused whether the show started or not. i also thought they were checking the set since there was many props littered around. but when they eventually get to the point of things, it was really, really funny, so i commend them for adding this small comedic scene just for audience members to stop taking photos.
- the singing of the cast was phenomenal! these people are just... so great, and it was definitely the highlight of the show.
- now... here’s where i get a little bit iffy-- the costumes. i don’t really know what to say because the costumes seem... laughable. but not in a good way. it seems like they wanted to modernize the costumes which is understandable but at some cases, it kinda fails?
- pros of costume: mrs lovett and pirelli really have the costumes which i loved. lea salonga did not look like herself but my god, did her costume stand out from the rest. and pirelli, on the other hand, had a cape that wooshed around a lot alongside a skirt, and boio, did nyoy volante nail this costume well. the modernizing costume thing didn’t really work with the others besides these two. other modernized costumes that look passable were tobias’ costume and some of the ensemble. (also, jonas fogg wore a denim jacket with a junji ito screencap on the back of it? uh, okay, i love junji ito but why is his manga featured here...)
- cons of costume: oh boy. sweeney todd’s costume was... eh. jeans, really? out of everything they could’ve given to sweeney fucking todd, they gave him a polo under a denim jacket under a blazer and jeans? then there’s the mess that is johanna’s costume design. girl, the designer probably went to an sm sale and decided to just shove anything they found in the department store into their cart. johanna’s dress was. eh. her wig? eh. the costumes didn’t snatch my wig but i’ll let them snatch my wig just so that they can replace whatever the heck johanna has on her head. additionally, not all costumes were modernized... which is like... what? the ensemble who had victorian era-esque costumes looked fine! they even could’ve given sweeney todd one of their costumes because it looked much better than the denim outfit they gave sweeney. it’s just quite... odd to see a mix of modernized costumes and oldstyle costumes mix all together because they lowkey clash with one another.
- okay, let’s move on to the actors themselves. let’s start of with lea salonga-- oh my god, she is a legend. she easily adapted into being mrs lovett and that is so commendable especially when she isn’t used to playing an insane role like that. her mrs lovett had consistent, chaotic energy which i admired and she really was the one to eye whenever you see her in a scene.
- jett pangan was great but he isn’t as consistent as lea when he portrayed his character. sweeney todd was insane, he is angery, he is chaotic but jett pangan portrayed him as stoic and silent in some parts. i really enjoyed his more insane side during little priest but i wished he kept it throughout the whole performance. what i did like about him is his voice is just so, so great. his vibratos were so good y’all, his singing in general makes up for everything. additionally, when sweeney gets emotional, he did a really good job portraying a sadder and more depressed kind of sweeney, almost like he was having some existential crisis on stage. (he really looked like he was regretting life choices during by the sea and the ending, it was actually kind of amusing).
- now, luigi quesada, an underrated actor from this production. god... he was just so consistent and energetic and an absolutely great actor. he really portrayed a pure soft boi through tobias and when he started to become insane, he portrayed that shift of character so fucking well. the shift of character was my absolute favorite thing because, in my opinion, it is the scariest thing that’s happened in sweeney todd. tobias was a pure, innocent child who wanted nothing more but to have a smol job and serve others nicely and then, bam, when he saw the corpses, something snapped in his head and it was so horrific to witness his change. additionally, luigi had such a cheerful singing voice which embodied the character well and accustomed to both the innocent and insane side of tobias.
- nyoy volante was another great treasure in this. he wasn’t as seen since his character died midway through but his stage presence is so great. he was so flamboyant while also being very comedic, using his costume to emphasize the comedy. also, he didn’t die immediately when he got attacked by sweeney, and he did portray the struggling pirelli so, so well.
- gerald santos was... okay. he has a great singing voice, they all do, so i tend to judge how good they are based from their acting. gerald was really good at portraying a panicky anthony who was desperate for johanna. his character was really consistent and i like that! my main issue with gerald is at some times, his diction isn’t too great. i know that some filipinos (even me) would struggle pronouncing words in english, but if you’re an actor who’s worked on many musicals in english, i expect a lot from you. i think he had a really thick filipino/tagalog accent and mixed with a really mediocre british accent, it wasn’t too... understandable. i couldn’t understand most of his dialogue and because he can’t do accents well, his acting becomes affected.
- mikkie volante’s voice is so fucking beautiful, how do you even sing that high and make it look easy? anyways, she portrayed a very frightful johanna very well, and i can’t believe how much the costume and wig really affects my perception of the character. it’s just... i can’t take her seriously if she looks... like that. okay, enough about the costumes-- her johanna felt scared and i felt that, but when she fell in love with anthony, she was desperate, and i fuckin loved it. being isolated for your entire life will leave you desperate for affection and mikkie fucking nailed it!
- andrew fernando was so-so as the judge. he wasn’t... creepy, or disturbing. his character is disgusting and so close-minded but i never felt any eerie vibes from him. i also think the costume he had was restricting him from doing anything because he had layers upon layers of clothing and when he began whipping himself, he looked like he struggled a lot to sing and do the actions (the costumes for this production is just so off in general it’s a bit offensive). there wasn’t much stage presence from him and i just wanted him to act a bit filthier.
- arman ferrer as the beadle was a trip. he portrays the character as so dumb and i loved it, it’s just the idiotic energy really cracks me up. additionally, his singing, oh my word, his singing is so good. he hits high notes like it was no problem and it was jawdropping. there was not much to say besides his fuckin costume was whack why did he wear that-- but overall, he was pretty solid!
- ima castro was good! she portrayed a crazy beggar woman which was so chaotic and funny and just fucking bonkers and i loved the energy she had! the only thing i note is that, at times, her voice would stop and i’m not sure if it was intentional or not? even if it wasn’t, it actually added to her character rather than brought her down.
- ensemble was... phenomenal. ignoring the costumes for the hundredth time, i love the ensemble so much because they don’t get enough credit yet they nail it every time they get into a production. their acting during the asylum scene? iconic. their accents? iconic. everything was so iconic.
- now, imma just say a few points in the show that i remembered which is worthy enough to tell yall of.
- here i’ll explain how the murders work. it’s kinda... weird. the execution was inconsistent and i remembered three ways on how they were able to kill and cook their victims. firstly, the murder with pirelli is the only one of its kind. sweeney sliced his throat and threw him into the driver’s seat of the car which was confusing considering how the other murders took place. the second kind of murder and the more common one is when sweeney sliced someone’s throat, the victim would walk off the car and walk into mrs lovett’s oven by themselves. i’m assuming that with pirelli, they didn’t bake him yet so they just hid him in some kind of box or crate somewhere. the third kind applied to the judge and the beggar woman wherein when they killed them, it was implied that they were brought to the bakehouse and not burnt.
- here’s my interpretation of how the murders go. in the original, the bakehouse was the basement, but here, i assume since they claim it’s a “bakehouse”, there’s a secret compartment in the barbershop that brings dead bodies directly into the oven. i’m guessing that with judge turpin and the beggar woman, the oven was not on so they were just... brought there? it’s really, really confusing and i wished they cleared it up so i won’t keep wondering about what is where and how things work. i do think that the victims walking into the oven is really genius because it was a perfect mix of comedy and eeriness which i really commend.
- i liked the way they portrayed the streets in this. they used the upper stage and it really clears up where each scenery is set! it isn’t like the bakery and barbershop wherein the set is confusing, it was much better than that. when mrs lovett and sweeney walked up to pirelli’s barbershop, the scenery was so interesting because they walk from above and look down at them. i really, really liked it.
- additionally, the sprays tobias advertised were cleaning sprays found in ace hardware store, that’s funny. also, the only time their haggard wigs would be effective is when tobias used it and nothing else. (i’ve seen better wigs in beautiful, where did those wigs go?)
- the way they portrayed johanna’s place was so, so good. johanna’s room would be atop the upper stage and, ugh, it’s just so well put-together. this whole set was the work of god and no one can convince me otherwise.
- the lighting was great but the sound design was a bit off for me. the electrocution noises were smart to use but i thought it was a bit too loud? like it was really off-putting. i wished they added gross sloshing noises when they were handling the body parts just to add give a better effect when mrs lovett was holding actual intestines and organs.
- the opening of act 2 was hilarious and one of the more intriguing parts of this musical. pangan’s voice? spectacular. lea’s look of distress whilst serving pies? hilarious. the ensemble? god’s gift to mankind. it was so comedic because sweeney is calmly singing about johanna whilst he slices throats and the victims, in a daze, just walk into an oven while mrs lovett’s expression just screams, “yea, that’s life.”
- i can’t believe. they used handkerchiefs to express what a wig is during the asylum scene. like............ really. where are the leftover wigs from beautiful???
- also, it was weird to me that johanna was the one who shot jonas fogg. it was kinda badass of her and perhaps portrayed her character to become more brave but i still kinda thought it was ooc? (ALSO DEAN ROSEN IS GREAT I LOVE HIM HE POSTS CAT STUFF ON IG AND THATS ALL HE DOES)
- okay someone clarify with me because i initially thought tobias escaped the bakehouse, hence why they went looking for him, but they said it was locked from the outside and i’m left confused why they left in the first place...?
- btw whenever lea speaks, i become more of a lesbian, thanks lea salonga.
- when the plot twist was revealed and mrs lovett and sweeney were slow dancing, that was a theatrical experience. god, just... mrs lovett with the most fearful look in her face as sweeney slowly moves her into the oven is so iconic and that has to be one of the more chilling scenes in the musical. then, once sweeney kills her off, she holds the beggar lady close to him and he looks absolutely mournful.
- AND THEN TOBIAS FUCKING COMES BACK AND GIVES THE BIGGEST CHILLS EVER. will i ever stop talking about how good tobias was written/how good luigi quesada is? probably not.
- anyways, tldr; sweeney todd was beyond average but wasn’t perfect, the costumes were. eh. the singing was perfect, the SET was amazing, lea salonga, nyoy volante, and luigi quesada own my heart, and philippine theatre really needs better wig suppliers, someone please donate your wigs to them.

Hannah Watches LOSH - Champions
AND WE RETURN ONCE AGAIN TO THE LOSH REVIEWS!
Thank you so much for waiting. Finals were a pain.
So the friend who hasn’t watched losh that i was hoping to get her reactions wasn’t able to watch the episode with me due to her schedule. I was able to stream it with @cyclone-rachel and @peskyshortcake though.
Champions
The episodes starts of with our cheery episode palette colors, indicating we have since moved on from the previous dark episode stretch we had.
We find the main characters are at a futuristic athletic event at a place called the Dodecathelon, I’m probably butchering the spelling, with Lightning Lad competing.
Tumblr media
We’re asking the important questions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never change PG
And then we get the announcers talking about one of the competitors, which Lightning Lad immediately assumes is him.
HERE IT COMES
Tumblr media
HERE IT COMES
Also a moment to appreciate PG’s face
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY FAVORITE TRASH BABY IN ALL EXISTENCE
Tumblr media
MY SASSY PIECE OF TRASH
Tumblr media
After the opening plays, the scene opens to Lightning Lad confronting Mekt.
Tumblr media
WOW.
Tumblr media
Mm. Obvious sibling rivalry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUCH SASS.
AND LOOK AT THE FACE HERE
Tumblr media
BEAUTIFUL
Also our chat kept spiraling into insanity.
Tumblr media
I love him too much
Also, give him credit for going at Lightning Lad’s biggest flaw - his pride. While pride is certainly important to have, it can also be dangerous to have too much. It’s what usually leads to his aggressive behavior towards others.
One other thing: interesting choice on making his outfit red/fire themed. Wonder why the staff went with that choice.
Tumblr media
I LOVE HIM
As soon as he’s gone, Phantom Girl gives Lightning Lad reassurance he can win. First time we see her being the compassionate one.
Tumblr media
I feel her.
And then we get her complaining about what she went through to get them seats.
AND WE FIND OUT WHO MOM IS. THE PRESIDENT
HO GEEZE. SO NOW WE KNOW HOW SHE’S PRIVILEGE.
I have to say that the people we see in the diplomatic skybox have nice designs.
And then we get one of the best moments
Tumblr media
WHY WAS HE ON THE TABLE?!
Tumblr media
PHANTOM GIRL’S FACE AND SUPERMAN’S FACE I LOVE THEM
And here she is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then she goes straight for her daughter.
Tumblr media
Ho boy, nervous Supes? He can’t maintain eye contact, and keeps fumbling over his words.
She’s kinda fast to assume PG and Superman had a thing tho.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, it’s well spent budget at least. Disney could learn a few things.
Then we switch to the race.
Tumblr media
Why tho???
Tumblr media
YOU LITTLE SHIT
And then we get our first hint that something is up with the judge who looks away.
But why didn’t the other judges notice?
But despite Mekt trying to get the upper hand, Lightning Lad manages to get ahead again.
Tumblr media
DEM LEGS
Tumblr media
NO ONE CAN DENY IT
But Mekt denies the cheating attempt, saying the judges didn’t see anything. What a prick.
Cutting back to Superman and Phantom Girl, we see Clark is impressed by the current version of sport events. And then Winema comes in.
OH NO.
Tumblr media
TINYA I FEEL YOU.
Tumblr media
When Superman states that they’re just friends, Phantom Girl uses the excuse to get snacks to leave, despite the place being catered.
Strained relationship much between mom and daughter.
When the two of them are discussing moms while checking out merchandise, Phantom Girl states “She doesn’t have a clue,” indicating poor communication between mom and daughter. And then Superman comments that his mom get’s busy as well but doesn’t miss much. So clearly, despite the uncertainty on how to handle his powers we saw in the first episode, Superman thought she was trying her best to.
But then it turns out Superman has a “trouble-is-happening” sense and sees something under the Skybox, which Phantom Girl recognizes to be a bomb.
When he goes to chuck it into space, it goes off, and we get some more wonderful faces. Unfortunately, I had to lower the quality of the first gif of the scene, but golly it’s so good to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow.
Tumblr media
Clearly this episode devoted more time to the faces than other episodes.
And then they see Tharok disguised as a pinwheel vender, prompting Superman to give chase.
When they zip by a crowd, people ask who just went by. Put on the spot, Phantom Girl starts chanting “Lightning Lad”.
Which everyone starts to chant as well.
… I want to know how offended Lightning Lad was at this.
Despite catching up with Tharok, Superman loses him after getting sticky-pinwheels on his face.
Realizing that Emerald Empress is cloaking him, it immediately confirms all 5 of the Fatal Five are at the event. And this time, their target is the President. They’re aiming big.
Back with the actual sports event, we learn about flare surfing. Which is definitely a sport. A very dangerous one too, provided it takes place in a volcano.
With the main three of this episode, they are discussing how to treat the situation of the F5’s presence. Superman suggests the SP, but Phantom Girl said it’s a bad idea that will cause more panic. And then Lightning Lad states that there won’t be enough time to evacuate the huge number of people there.
When Lightning Lad says that they will stop the F5 by themselves, PG says he can’t quit after training all year for this event. Showing that she doesn’t want him to sacrifice his hard work. Superman tells the group they can all do their bit separately, keeping Lightning Lad in the competition.
And then Trash Baby interrupts, accusing Lightning Lad of getting help from his teammates, and tells him not to think of using the flight ring to cheat. Wow. Do you have any right to say that Mekt.
Tumblr media
AND THE ADULT MIND IMMEDIATELY GETS ANOTHER IMAGE FOR THAT SHOT
Tumblr media
First up for flare surfing is Tenzil Kem, simply called Kem in this episode, aka the future Matter-Eater Lad. And his performance is pretty impressive. Dude has some moves
Tumblr media
PESKY!
(the chat soon dissolved in us discussing Pesky’s life choices)
Following him is Lightning Lad, who also does a very impressive performance… which Mekt proceeds to ruin.
Tumblr media
Cat behavior.
Simply put. Lightning Lad gets deducted points because he lands on the contestant Mekt shoved.
But this next part, Superman spots Mano. Mano, why would you go as a painter? Everyone knows that painters don't show up on game days.
Then we get socially awkward Tinya. Gotta love social awkwardness.
Followed by badass Tinya, who finds Persuader disguised as a guard.
Tumblr media
But in all seriousness, when the ship Persuader has blows up, HOW DOES NO ONE NOTICE?!
Superman doesn’t hit kids, he tackles them.
AND THEN GETS STEPPED ON BY THE KIDS AS THEY SHAPESHIFT INTO VALIDUS.
Tumblr media
OOF. HE GONNA BE SORE. But who was he expecting if he wasn’t prepared for that to happen??
Returning to the competition, we see that the final event is start. Dashing across lava canyons. What is it with this event and heat in deadly environments?!
Tumblr media
Again, asking important questions.
I have to ask another thing - how did the obstacle that hit Kem NOT severely injure him? I mean he’s definitely pissed.
Dem legs can jump though, given Mekt managed to evade a sand trap several feet wide.
Also, during the group watch, I kept trying to get the video to pause on this one frame… we wasted 5 minutes trying to get to it.
The scene.
Tumblr media
The struggle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the frame i wanted to show.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry but Mekt’s face just cracks me up whenever I see it.
I’ll leave this frame up to interpretation to you guys.
However, immediately after Lightning Lad save’s Mekt, he shoves his little brother’s face into the ground.
Big brother behavior? IDK I don’t have brothers.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, he sets off another trap that causes a column over the lava to start collapsing.
Lightning Lad manages to get out of the boobytrap easily, while another contestant, Karl (I THINK THAT’S HIS NAME? IDK I WISH THIS SHOW HAD SUBTITLES), isn’t so lucky.
But then we see a major change in behavior in Lightning Lad.
He ditches his chance to win and saves him.
Let’s go over this a bit on why it’s important. This guy was an arrogant brat when we first meet him, and his pride is so big he has to be first (“DUDE! THAT’S MY SPOT!”). And this is the event he has trained a whole year for. But he’s grown during our 5 episodes.
And back to Mekt, he wins. And I’m sorry to say this but I’m happy a wee bit for him? I mean look how happy he looks crossing that line.
Tumblr media
As for why I’m happy, I’ll discuss that later. Cuz it goes into the dynamic of the brothers.
Tumblr media
YOU LITTLE ****
The episode jumps forwards to the ceremony, where Lightning Lad is sulking and is being comforted by PG and Supes. It’s pretty touching.
At first.
Tumblr media
GARTH U SORE LOSER
PG then prompts Lightning Lad to go take his medal, leading him to stand next to Mekt.
And then Mekt pulls something out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh no.
Tumblr media
I love how he says that.
With no forcefield, F5 proceed to crash the ceremony.
Two questions: WHY IS THAT EYEBALL SO BIG?? WHY FOCUS ON JUST VALIDUS’S REVEAL??
As soon as the Fatal Five reveal themselves, Lighting Lad immediately says he knew the judge had it in for him.
REALLY?! THIS IS THE BEST TIME TO WHINE ABOUT THE JUDGE?!
I LOVE HOW THE ANNOUNCERS ARE THE ONES WHO LEAD UP TO THE COMMERCIAL BREAK THO
Post commercial break, F5 and the legionnaires start going at it, while Empress goes to capture the president.
Tumblr media
EMPRESS THIS IS NOT A TIME TO FLIRT
Tumblr media
OUCH. THAT FACE.
Phantom Girl is not happy of the idea of having an enemy for a second mom though, swooping in to get her mom out of the stage.
Whiles Superman is dealing with Validus, Mano, and Empress (plus the eye), we get another shot of Ranzz bros.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MEKT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the chat dissolves into more insanity. Thank’s Pesky.
LOOK AT WHAT PG PROCEEDS TO DO THEN WHEN SHE’S BACK.
Tumblr media
SHE GRABS MANO, PHASES HIM THROUGH THE FLOOR, THEN USES HIS HAND TO MELT THAROK’S LEG. DAMN GURL
Empress catches Superman, so he tries to fry the eye like he did the first episode. But it doesn’t work, leaving Empress commenting that she wasn’t going to let him do that twice. Give her a gold star for learning.
When it looks like Superman is doomed to the eye, Jo Nah comes to the rescue, suckerpunching that eye into space, freezes Empress, who then gets kicked by PG
And then comes a bit that i know kills my dear friend @augment-techs inside

I’m sorry, but clearly PG was looking at the booty in the last bit.
Meanwhile, the broadcasters start to tell audience what’s happening, which I continue to find amusing. They even cut away from Lighting Lad’s possible demise to advertise snacks.
They just call Superman “This Fella in Blue”. I bet Brainy called in later and started to flood their office with complaints.
But seriously. HOW ARE PEOPLE SURVIVING VALIDUS LANDING ON THEM?! VALIDUS IS SENT FLYING AND THEN HE LANDS ON EMPRESS.
Who grunts miserably for Validus to get off.
The SP are getting ready to take the F5 away, and we see our lovable trash baby again.

OBSERVATIONS ARE MADE.

Nice jump.
And then we get what is a very interesting exchange.

Dat eyeliner tho.
But I find the way he closes his eyes before laughing interesting. And in his reflection, when he does laugh, it doesn’t look as confident when he did earlier. Taking that those words left a bigger gash than expected?
Another time jump takes us to another, smaller, ceremony. And a bit of mom-daughter bonding.
And then that’s followed by Winema asking if Lightning Lad is single.
OH NO

OH GOD

MY FRIEND DIES MORE AGAIN AT THE WINK OUT OF DISGUST

She’s done. As this episode is.
So final thoughts on the episode overall.
I love it.
This had some of the best expressions, and animation, in the whole series.
We had gone through three episodes of darker plots to get some lighter plots again, which is what the main characters need/deserve right now after everything that has happened so far.
While Lightning Lad plays a huge part of the episode, so does Phantom Girl.
This is also the beginning of Lightning Lad’s growth in character. Which was needed, given he was a huge, egotistical jerk in the first episode. We see he’s willing to give up first place to save others, although he will still throw a tantrum later (the locker room). And his interactions with his brother was enjoyable to watch. He clearly is not on good terms, and it seems every interaction he does is bad. Except when he saves him from being blasted during the dash. So he still cares for him on some level. Just not a high enough level that he can have a good/positive interaction.
Phantom Girl has more character development as well. We finally know where the “privilege but misunderstood” expertise comes from. Her life as the President’s daughter. She clearly hates the political part of life, having enough of being in major spotlights of that kind. But she was still willing to do stuff to get her and Superman seats in the best spot. Plus we know that she enjoys to oogle guys, but gets annoyed when people assume she’s dating/interested in her teammates. And we get to see a bit of her softer side when she’s comforting Lightning Lad.
Although I guess she divulged off screen to Superman that her mom was the President though.
Speaking of Superman - HE FINALLY GETS A LIGHT PLOT EPISODE AFTER 3 DARK PLOT EPISODES THANK GOD. He needed this so bad. Although this episode is not Superman centric. But god, he was so funny when talking to the president.
As for the F5… once again, could have used more development. I think that eyeball can change it’s size tho. But we see Empress is clearly a good planner on these things, as she even predicted Superman using his heat vision on the eyeball again.
The other guest characters were interesting to see.
The reporters were fun to listen to. Also had cool designs.
It looks like most people in the 31st century have powers, given that some of the competitors ended up fighting against the F5. Most probably just don’t know how to use them effectively against criminals.
We get our first appearance of Matter-Eater Lad and Ultra Boy.
@augment-techs, I can hear you hurling at the mention of Ultra Boy.
Neither of them are really delved into character wise, although we do have Ultra Boy winking at PG at the end.
But when watching this episode, I noticed they were talking to each other in the background (around the part when the legion trio were discussing how to go about the F5 threat). Friends maybe?
A fair number of the background characters had pretty cool designs, but a problem with this show is how most characters the same age as the legionnaires, if humanoid, share the same body type, both guys and girls.
… And as far as I saw, there’s only one girl competing.

Sigh.
Winema is so good to see after Dr. Londo. She does care for her daughter, and tries to reach out to her. Would be the type of parent who offers a condom during sex rather than scold you. However, her ways of reaching out to her is not without flaws. First off the bat, politics. She couldn’t give her daughter a medal in the end mainly because of the political feedback. Who knows how much it affected other interactions beforehand?
And then we have her immediate assumptions that she is dating Superman, and that she’s interested in dating one of the other boys at the end. It’s uncomfortable when people assume you and someone the opposite are “more than just friends”.
Furthermore, watching this episode now that I think PG might be bi, it led to a new idea of the assumptions and how PG feels about them.
Simply put, her mom is offering only suggestions on guys. Not girls.
As a pansexual, let me say it’s annoying when people assume you are only into one gender. Even more so if they assume you are straight. And when that person is family, that’s opening another whole can of worms. Sometimes the people aren’t aware of how it’s a bad thing but can be simply told and they will get it, and then there’s the homophobic/biphobic/panphobic people.
I think Winema is probably the first of the two though. She’s the best parent on this show.
In any case though, going off on the idea that she might be bi, Phantom Girl hasn’t gone to tell her that she is interested in girls. Maybe she’s afraid how it will play out politically? Or if her mom takes it badly?
Questions, questions.
But let’s talk about my FAVORITE PART OF THIS WHOLE EPISODE.
Mekt Ranzz.
Oh my god, he’s like the fusion of Grunkle Stan and Victor Nikiforov. Willing to cheat, but clearly has athletic talents... and pretty looks.
Okay, the fact that I am able to compare him to Victor leaves enough leverage for me to justify me shiping him with Superman, who I compared to Yuuri in the first review. Everyone shush.
But as for character dissection, let’s bring something from the previous episode.
Lightning Lad’s room.
I managed to adjust the brightness/contrast in the original frame so that we can see it, unlike the way Fear Factory just made everything to dark to see.
YES I AM STILL BITTER ABOUT FEAR FACTORY BEING DARK AS ****
Tumblr media
The shelfs has a lot of trophies. As in, filled with them.
And now recall what Mekt said after winning the dash, and then when Lightning Lad went to confront him.
“Nothing wrong with silver, little brother. You should be used to second place by now.”
“All I did was make a deal with the judge, so I’d come in first! For a change.”
Okay, those two statements seem to conflict with each other, but hear me out.
Lightning Lad was always, or usually, getting first place when they were younger in athletic events. And Mekt was probably never prided in any of his accomplishments. So when the Empress in disguise offers him that chance to get of first place, he jumps for it. Hence why he looks so friggin happy when he crosses the line.
As for the statement he makes after the race, I think he might have been making a jab at Lightning Lad with something said to him from their childhood.Or he was referring to the competition itself, given that he ruined his landing earlier (and possibly some other events we didn’t see.)
Either way, it was to rub more salt into Lightning Lad’s wounded pride.
He is capable of regret though. His expression seen when Empress addresses him when she grabs the President, and to me, the way he looked at himself in the medal and laughed. That laugh, and the expression he made, seemed less malicious than it did when I first watched the episode.
Let me make this clear really quick, I did not like Mekt when I first watched this. Everything he did seemed like a total prick move. This wasn’t the first episode I saw him in though. That was Lightning Storm. So my opinion of him was arguably ruined by that.
But in terms of stepping up to make things right, at this point in the show, he’s no where close. He runs away for crying out loud. Then again, no evidence if he has ever fought people like the F5 before.
But he did offer Lightning Lad his medal. The medal that he cheated to get. Really the most decent thing he does in the whole episode.
He clearly isn’t as angry towards Lightning Lad. Way less. Heck, he provokes him in a somewhat playful manner at times. Mekt seems more open to them having a positive relationship than Lightning Lad. Which says a lot on how he views their relationship in comparison to his brother.
Maybe my fondness of him, and actually knowing his background based on the comics, is getting in the way of me properly seeing how the staff wanted to portray him? Probably.
But I can’t deny that I love him… and making his life a nightmare.
Given Mekt ties into Lightning Lad’s backstory though, it makes more sense that Fear Factory was suppose to come out before Champions, as it was the opening act to us learning about it on this show.
Characters in this episode:
Superman gets the light-hearted plotline he deserves. Finally. In terms of development, not much happens with him though. But given that this episode wasn’t suppose to focus on him, we can let it go.
Phantom Girl gets so much more development than any other episode, and we get a better look at her personality than before, where she was a supporting character. Plus we get perhaps the best facial expressions in the show from her.
Again, I cannot stress this enough, this is a huge part on Lightning Lad’s character development. But it’s not the starting point of understanding his personality, because that was the previous episode, with his bedroom and his fears. Now I COULD delve into every bit right now. But I won’t. I will do it as the episodes go along.
And then the competitors: Matter Eater Lad/Kem was fun to see, even though not much of his personality was really explored. Zzok was endearing to see - nice to know the competitions weren’t humanoid exclusive. Ultra Boy/Jo Nah had a bit more personality than the others, given he interacted with PG - I HEAR YOU GROANING AUGMENT!! And the possibility that he and Kem are friends even before/during the competition is interesting.
Fatal Five. Again - not the most interesting villains, with Empress being the most intriguing of the 5 of them, but not enough to engage people as much as other villains.
Winema is the best parent in the 31st century on this show during the first season. Hands down. The remedy to seeing Dr. Londo’s abuse. A woman of power also. What’s not to love? Well, her assumptions on Tinya wanting to go out with only guys, particularly teammates. But hopefully she will correct that in the future.
And let me say this again, I LOVE MEKT. He’s such a trash baby, and a pretty one too. Can be one of the best villains on this show. Reason why I say can is, like Alexis, that title doesn’t seem right for him in this episode. As for the next episode we see him, he will fit that description of villain. Still curious on the staff’s choice for his outfit though.
