Sarah could genuinely say she had never met a more wonderful person than Chuck Bartowski. He’d been so kind to her; so accepting, despite her less than stellar reputation when it came to how she treated people. Sarah still guilted herself for letting the popular crowd sway her in such a way, but it was just as much her fault as theirs. Still, she was turning over a new leaf, and it was all thanks to a sweet boy that had given her a chance. Did she deserve it? The jury was still out, but Sarah was beyond grateful. For Thanksgiving she had said prayers – thankful for Chuck and his sister, and their generosity. It was much better than eating a turkey sandwich at home, alone… or going to visit her dad in prison. She couldn’t believe how quickly it had passed, and that Christmas was just around the corner.

There was something magical about the time of year. The whimsical lights and cheery music. The smiles that lit up most people’s faces. This Christmas would be a truly special one though. She wouldn’t be spending it alone, and Sarah was thrilled that Chuck and Ellie had asked her to partake in helping them decorate, even if she had played coy to the initial invitation. Once the Bartowski/Woodcomb residence looked like a winter wonderland, she felt ready to cozy up to the fire with some hot chocolate. The more time Sarah spent with Chuck, the less she could deny that these feelings she had for him were more than just friendly. She got all fluttery just thinking about cuddling up to him.

“No, thank you, Chuck. I’ve never really gotten to do all of the Christmas stuff like this before. It was fun. I’m glad I could help some.” Sarah’s eyes sparkled as they met his warm brown ones, then followed their drift toward the mistletoe. Sarah’s cheeks flamed, but she offered a shy smile at the adorable way Chuck pointed out the plant. His own cheeks were just as pink, and she wondered if that meant he wanted to kiss her. Because she certainly wanted to kiss him. “Sneaky Ellie,” Sarah mused, her gaze floating back down to Chuck’s again. Then they focused on his lips, and a sweet smile took her over. “I guess we shouldn’t break tradition.” Despite the nerves inside, Sarah leaned in, her lips tenderly covering his. Tentatively she kissed him, her hand reaching up to cup his cheek as she waited to see if he would reciprocate.

Welcome to episode three, in which Buffy tries to slay vampires and meet boys. Because even if you’re a motherfudging superhero you’re nothing if you can’t attract a man.

But because it’s Buffy she’s still cool and the boys likes her slaying ability best and she has the agency because she makes the decision not to date him.

Hooray!

Outfit 1

Buffy often chooses practicality AND fashion for slayage. Here we get a nice, long-sleeved top, pants and boots. Even at this point, she sort of knows what she is about, son.

Is the top navy? Or more purple? I can’t tell. Maybe it’s because I was recently told by an optometrist that one of my pupils is bigger than the other. Ok, so that’s not really relevant. I just wanted y’all to know that I kind of have a Bowie Eye.

Whatever colour it is, it’s nice. But it’s not setting my world on fire like some of the other outfits in this episode will.

The ring Giles finds is super cute. Kind of reminds me of this jewellery store near where I lived as a kid called Krakatoa. Sold beads, lots of silver jewellery and incense. Similar to Tree of Life, which I love.

Outfit 2

YAS GURL.

I love this dress. I remember picking up a dress in a similar pattern at an op shop once and for whatever reason I cut it up into a top and skirt. I don’t think I have it anymore and I no longer know why. Oh, that’s right, because I’m a GD FOOL.

The ribbon in the bun is a cute touch. But already Buffy is trying to act like someone she thinks Owen, this episode’s paramour, wants her to be. As a teen I was like, of course! He’s Owen! He’s a boy! But now I’m like, tell him to get fucked, B. Be your own person. And guess who turns out to be right? Me. Sort of. Let’s move on!

Oh, Willow. Why, gurl? You know how I feel about white pants.

I might actually like Xander’s shirt. As a teen I think I had a bit of a crush on him in the same way I always found Chandler to be the most dateable Friend. You know, the superficially attainable dudes who if they existed would be obsessed with other women and be real jerks to you.

Cordelia cannot compete with Buffy in the fashion stakes and I think Owen knows it, too. But also Buffy body shames Cordelia in order to impress a boy and it makes me a bit sick. I know Cordelia’s mean, but come on. Out of order, B.

I’LL NEVER STOP LOOKING FOR A JACKET LIKE THIS. Ever.

I have no idea if she was always dressed for potential Bronze-ing. Previous experience would say yes. Girl knows how to slay and party. It’s the ultimate Slay.

I don’t remember if teen me loved this outfit. But old me wears this outfit to work.

Part 2 of Is Owen just blonde Angel?

No, but really.

Every couple of episodes we take a break from the Big Bad of the season but now the Master is back and is wearing what appears to be a leather Nehru jacket. Could he be taking style cues from Dr Evil?

I believe the Master is doing what a friend calls ‘Peacocking.’

Outfit 5

Buffy is taking advice from Xander on dressing for a dude and he’s sabotaging her by effectively slut shaming her. Like you should take advice from someone wearing that shirt.

Thank Miley for Willow. And those cute plaits.

Yas to the gold. Very 60s. Her hair clip also seems to match the clasp on her dress, which is...

Part 3 of Is Owen just Blonde Angel?

Like, dude.

Oh, but actually, turns out, he’s not just blonde Angel. He basically tells Buffy, ‘you’re not like other girls.’ What BS. And Buffy plays into it, which is one thing she never has to do with Angel. He tells her it’s like she’s two people and she actually - SHE ACTUALLY SAYS, ‘which one do you like better?’

What she should have said was, I’m just the one person, actually. Because like all human beings young women are allowed to be multifaceted. For example, just because I like meeting people of the gender to which I’m attracted doesn’t make me less intelligent or unable to care about other things. Maybe your head, Owen, isn’t stuck in a book so much as it is up your own arse.

I’m sure the now (estimated) 35 year old Buffy would say the same thing. Actually 16 year old Buffy would probably say that. 16 year old Buffy knows better than anyone that love can be cruel.

Cordelia’s crimping and not in the good way. She’s totally owning her own sexuality but shaming Buffy for trying to do the same. I know you’re mean, but come on. I feel like society trains us to believe this sort of behaviour is good or based on scientific fact - competing for other people romantically like humans are literal prizes to be won. Like a meat tray you might try to win at a raffle at your local RSL. It’s trying to apply a strategy to obtain something, but it’s something that the getting of which is largely out of your control. But maybe I’m bitter. I never win raffles.

The outfit is good, though.

I have mixed feels about the jacket with this dress. I had a similar one I purchased, nay Lay-Buyed, from Just Jeans. I wore mine with t-shirts, jeans and you guessed it - Adidas Superstars.

So anyway Buffy saves the day. Owen thinks she’s a badass and wants to go on more extreme dates with her but Buffy, being a mother fudging superhero, understands that this actually isn’t a good idea for Owen or the Scooby Gang and breaks it off because she literally breaks vampires’ hearts, which sometimes means she has to metaphorically break humans’ hearts. She’s the Slayer, bitch.

Outfit 6

She does the metaphorical heart breaking in this jazzy little number. We don’t really see the dress underneath. It looks to be white and floral. I’m sure it was cute. Willow, Willow, Willow. Y Tho?

Giles is about to serve some actually useful truth nuggets and look sexy as ferk while doing it.

The hair is subdued like Buffy’s mood. It’s like it knew what was gonna go down. But her eyeliner is great, like it knew she would realise she’s not so bad at slaying after all. She stopped the Big Bad, eft eft ess.

Except she didn’t really, but it doesn’t matter because the thing she was supposed to stop is actually this entirely useless character:

For years Sarah was certain she had only been born to live the spy life, and that it was all she would ever amount to. The dream of being a wife, a mother – hell, the idea of ever falling in love had seemed so out of reach. Now though, as she watched their family scurry around, still full of turkey from the previous day, her heart felt full. More than she ever thought it could be. Chuck was so cute, taking the usual lead to make sure the tree was about as straight as it was going to get. Stephen inspected his dad’s work, while the girls secretly nibbled on cookies that Ellie had brought over the day before.

“I think it it looks great,” Sarah assured with a warm smile as blue eyes wandered the glittering tree. “What do you think, Jackie?” Sarah’s hand fell to her daughter’s head, giving the ends of her hair a playful little curl around her finger. “Daddy and Stevie did well, didn’t they?” Of course, she couldn’t help but wear rose-colored glasses around Christmastime. As a kid it had meant nothing to her, except maybe some extra cash stuffed in her stocking from her dad. Now though, it was her favorite time of the year. She had a loving husband and children to celebrate with. “So are we going with the star or angel this year?”

Sarah wasn’t sure how to process everything. Of course she knew her dad was criminal -- she’d played a hand in his acts more times than she could count. But did he really deserve jail? He tried to be a good father... sort of. Everyone at school was hassling her for his arrest. The prom queen had fallen from her throne, and she was sure that her entire reputation had been tarnished.

She tried to hide the quiet sobs as she sat in the courtyard of school, but felt the bench she sat on shake with added weight. She was afraid to look and see who had joined her, but blue eyes peeked up anyway. Chuck Bartowski? Really? Not that Chuck wasn’t sweet, but they certainly ran in different circles in school. His mostly consisting of him and... Morgan.

“What?” her voice broke as she wiped at her eyes. “Are you hear to give me a hard time too?”

Sarah hadn’t ever the chance to play in the snow. Her childhood wasn’t like most; instead of messing around, she was helping her dad con people out of money. Even now, as a spy, she got to travel often... but rarely had the time to enjoy it. This surprise was special, and that Chuck had taken time to plan something just for her meant the world to Sarah. She couldn’t stop laughing once her own snowball lobbed and graze her husband’s back; she was quite proud of herself for it, actually.

“No one said I was a good sport!” Sarah called back, blue eyes watching Chuck curiously as he ducked beneath a hill. She could barely see his head bobbing, unable to tell what he was doing. Chuck was smart though, and likely making more ammo to retaliate with. Just in case, Sarah did the same. She had the advantage of a tree to hide behind, and though none of the balls of snow were perfect, given she’d never made them before, she picked up the task quickly.

“Oh, Chuuuuck,” she taunted in a lilting tone, peeking her face around the side of the tree to nab his attention. “C’mere. I have a surprise for you.”

Ever since her father had been arrested, Sarah’s home felt even more barren than usual. Sure, she was used to him being off running cons, but he’d always come back. This time he was behind bars, and she knew he wouldn’t. Unless he’d manage to con a guard or something, but even for the best, that seemed far-fetched. It always happened when she’d go to visit him in the prison; that night she’d have nightmares. Bad ones -- of him getting killed by the stronger prisoners, or dying there of old age locked up in a cell. She hated it, and couldn’t sleep. Chuck had been of comfort to her, and a good friend. Her only friend now. Even if many of the girls she used to run with hadn’t been but awful to him.

Reluctantly she walked over to the Bartowski home that night, pausing before she knocked lightly at the door. Sarah was relieved when he was the one to answer, and she tried to hold back the tears that instantly wanted to fall. “Can I sleep with you?”
