Mel Streeter (1931 – June 12, 2006) was born in Riverside, California. He attended the University of Oregon on a basketball scholarship and was the second African-American basketball player at Oregon after declining an offer by legendary basketball coach John Wooden to attend UCLA because UCLA did not have an architecture program. He graduated with a BS in architecture. At the University of Oregon, he was enrolled in the Army ROTC program. After serving as a second lieutenant in the transport unit at Ft. Lawton, Washington from 1955 to 1957, he stayed in Seattle to raise a family and tried finding work at local architectural firms. He struck out 22 times before he found work with Paul Hayden Kirk and Fred Bassetti. In 1967, he opened the third African American-owned architecture firm in Seattle. In the 1970s, he teamed with Paul Dermanis to form Streeter/Dermanis. By the early 1990s, the two partners had split and he created Streeter & Associates Architects. The firm is known for projects such as Auburn City Hall, the Federal Aviation Administration Regional Headquarters, and several buildings at Naval Station Everett in Everett, Washington. Some of the firm’s community facilities include John Muir Elementary School, the Rainier Beach High School Performance Hall, and the African American Academy. He designed a 64-unit senior housing complex for Mount Zion Baptist Church and was part of the Safeco Field, Qwest Stadium, and SeaTac airport design teams. A pillar of the African American community in Seattle, he was a Seattle Planning Commissioner. He was a founding member of the AIA Seattle Diversity Roundtable and the Tabor 100. He was active in the professional African American men’s organization, the Breakfast Group. The Mariners At A Glance- The Mariners just closed out a long homestand after hosting the All-Star Game. They went (5-5) on the ten-game stand and head out to Minneapolis for a three-game series against the Twins. Seattle took two out of three from Toronto over the weekend. JP Crawford is hot with a .348 average in July. Mike Ford has hit four homers and knocked in twelve runs in July. The Mariners have suffered some injuries lately as Jarred Kelenic broke his foot after Jhoan Duran struck him out last week. AJ Pollock was put on the injured list with a hamstring strain on Saturday. Cade Marlowe and Taylor Trammell were called up in their absence. The young pitching staff of George Kirby, Lucas Gilbert, and Bryce Miller are trying to carry the team back into the Wild-Card race. They sit 4.5 games behind the Blue Jays for the final spot. Paul Sewald has locked down nineteen saves. Justin Topa and Andres Munoz can bring it from the right side. Ty Adcock and Matt Brash are solid relievers as well.  

The Twins At A Glance- The Twins are one of the hottest teams in baseball following the All-Star Break. They are (8-2) in their last ten games and just swept the White Sox over the weekend. The Twins host the Mariners this week at home before having an off day in Kansas City on Thursday. Eddie Julien is hitting .520 since the All-Star Break. Alex Kirilloff has four homers and thirteen RBI in his last eight games. Kyle Farmer is hitting .333 since the break. Byron Buxton might get put on the paternity list after his wife went into labor after Sunday’s game. Trevor Larnach was taken out of the game for the Saints as a precaution. Jorge Polanco is going to see more reps at third base as Eddie Julien’s bat stays hot. Polanco has played some third base in his career. Joey Gallo and Willi Castro returned to action on Sunday after dealing with pink eye for the past few days. Emilio Pagan has allowed just two runs over his past sixteen innings of work. 

What To Watch For- The Twins split four games against the Mariners last week at Safeco Field. The Mariners opened 2022 at Target Field and split a four-game series to start the year. Luis Castillo has a 6.88 ERA in four starts against the Twins. Kenta Maeda has a 2.61 ERA over 10 1/3 innings against the Mariners. George Kirby threw seven shutout innings last Thursday against the Twins. Pablo Lopez gave up two runs over five innings in the same game versus Seattle. Joe Ryan is (0-2) with a 6.23 ERA in two starts against the M’s. This should be another solid test for the Twins against a fringe playoff team. They have been playing solid baseball. Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax likely will be unavailable for Monday’s game as they worked on Saturday and Sunday. It’s going to be a hot week at Target Field with triple-digit temperatures expected.

i grew up watching so many failures occur in safeco field. i listened as they'd report dwindling ticket sales on the radio. events that weren't baseball never sold well, and it didn't really matter what they were. any time i went to a mariners game there was plenty of room to move, tons of empty seats. i remember when they initially retired the sunkings and when the supersonics were relocated to oklahoma. seattle/washington sports suck.
