whispers of the isles || prologue

a pirate crew that found the largest emerald to ever exist. that same pirate crew disappeared soon after. the gemstone? never seen by anyone ever again. but this story isn't about that crew. it's about a crew that wants to find that gemstone. a boy who hates the sea, a boy who longs to sail it. a prince who longs to be free, a thief who'd rather be locked up in opulence than free in poverty. a captain who longs to forget his happiness, a girl who can't remember it. this is about them. this is about them finding the gemstone. if it even exists. this is about their pain. this is about them. this is about how the world speaks to them. how the isles whisper and they answer.

PROLOGUE

There once was a boy who feared the sea. He feared the sea that stole his mother. He feared the tides that rolled his brother’s ashes into pebbles. Most of all, he feared the maps that mesmerised his father.

“You have to be willing to seize a moment at any cost.” It was like a curse. “Any day now boy. I’ll find it.” He’d be gone for weeks at a time and the boy would barely survive thanks to the goodwill of his neighbours. Maybe this was his father’s way of punishing him for the death of his wife.

One day he just left, leaving the starving boy at God’s mercy.

Maybe it was luck, perhaps it was fate. Or maybe it was the burning desire in him to live. He was far too young when he had to take over his father’s role as the Lightkeeper – Protector of the Isles.

It was a simple duty, light the light throughout the night and never let it extinguish.

He failed his duty.

A ship had sailed right into the rocky waters just below the lighthouse. The shipwreck was still there after so many years. The only survivor was the guilt that ate the boy up. The villagers never blamed him. They knew it wasn’t his fault. They knew. He was just a boy. How could he have done the work of a man?

The seas had been increasingly violent for a long time.

The violent seas roared and crashed against the rugged cliffs that embraced the towering lighthouse. Frothy waves surged relentlessly, their tumultuous dance of whitecaps and dark depths creating a breathtaking yet fearsome spectacle. The cliffs, weathered by aeons of ceaseless assault, bore witness to the ferocity of the tempestuous ocean.

Despite the turmoil, the lighthouse stood resolute, its steadfast beam cutting through the stormy night to guide ships through the treacherous waters, a beacon of hope amidst the raging chaos.

And the boy, now years older, had not once failed in his duty since. He had grown past fearing the seas or the maps and had stopped mourning his family who left him. But he did not grow cold, he was like the sun. Smiling even when the island was in chaos during the storms, making the rescue trips of struggling fishing boats, he did it all. Was it repentance? Was it guilt? All the islanders knew, was that this boy was no longer a boy, but the man they knew he could have become.

His name was Styrmir. The one who caused storms.

was feeling quite deep ngl

i recently got rejected by the guy i liked, who a lot of my friends feel "led me on" and it reminded me of something i wrote a long time ago when i was going through a phase of heartbreak (over NOTHING)

No. He was out of my reach again. I thought he, of all people, would have understood that I couldn't cope with another person leaving. He said he loved me but where was he when I was crying on my bathroom floor. Where was he when my "best friend" left me? I should have known this day was coming. He said he'd always choose me… "If you really loved me, there wouldn't have to be a choice. Choose her." How I regretted saying that. I should have begged him to stay. Now I'm falling apart. The thread is fraying and I'm being pulled apart. He was my favourite form of loving. But I wasn't his. The hardest part of walking away from someone is that they'll be busy chasing after someone else no matter how slow you walk away rather than turning back to chase you again.

i dont expect this to get a lot of attention, i'm just throwing down my thoughts and drabble writing things.
