The Minnesota Twins picked up their biggest win of the season yesterday over the defending champion Astros. The series continued with Joe Ryan on the bump for the Twins tonight. The Astros bats were hot in the second inning as Alex Bregman smoked a Joe Ryan curveball out to left for a solo homer. Jose Abreu continued the rally with a one-out walk and Chas McCormick drilled a Ryan fastball out to left for a two-run home run. Houston had a three-run lead after two innings of play. The Astros got back to work in the third with a Jeremy Pena walk and Yordan Alvarez single. Alex Bregman lined a run-scoring single to left and Kyle Tucker walked to load up the bases. Jose Abreu followed with a sac fly to right and the Astros lead grew to five. The Twins finally found some offense in the fifth when Royce Lewis led-off with a double to left. Christian Vazquez singled him home and the Twins pulled within four. Brandon Bielak finished off 5 2/3 solid innings and the Houston bullpen did the rest. Phil Maton struck out four and Ryne Stanek put up a zero in the eighth. Rafael Montero had a scoreless ninth as the Astros evened up the series at a game apiece tonight. 

-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan didn’t have his best stuff tonight and it showed. He gave up five runs on four hits over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out six. Cole Sands threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Jovani Moran got out of the seventh. Griffin Jax had a 1-2-3 eighth. Christian Vazquez led the team with two hits on the night he received his World Series ring. The Twins hit 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Kenta Maeda struck out four over two scoreless innings for the Saints and Caleb Thielbar had a scoreless inning of work in their rehab outings. Tomorrow, Louie Varland faces Hunter Brown in the series finale.

Astros' pitcher out of playoffs after breaking hand during locker punch

Houston Astros relief pitcher Phil Maton will be unavailable for the MLB postseason because he broke a finger punching a locker.

Maton revealed Tuesday he suffered a fracture to his right pinkie after he became frustrated when the Astros’ lost their final game of the regular season.

The pitcher had surgery Monday to repair the fractured finger on his pitching hand.

The Astros had already said Maton and veteran reliever Will Smith had been left off the roster for the AL Division Series against the Seattle Mariners.

The 29-year-old Maton gave up two hits and two runs in the eighth inning of Houston’s 3-2 win over Philadelphia last week. One of those hits was by Phil Maton’s brother, Nick Maton.

“I was upset with how my outing went, and it’s kind of shortsighted and ultimately selfish. And it’s one of those things that I hope doesn’t affect our team moving forward,” Maton said Tuesday.

Smith joined the roster after the Astros acquired him from the Braves at the MLB trade deadline. He had a 3.27 ERA over 24 appearances with Houston in the regular season. Maton had a 3.84 ERA in 67 games this year.

Rookie right-hander Hunter Brown did make the ALDS roster along with 12 pitchers. The team also carried an extra position player, rookie infielder David Hensley, on the postseason roster.

Houston will carry two catchers, eight infielders and four outfielders against Seattle.

The Mariners will carry 12 pitchers, three catchers, five infielders, four outfielders and utility players Adam Frazier and Dylan Moore.

Their pitching staff for this series includes Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Diego Castillo, Matthew Boyd, Matt Festa, Matt Brash, George Kirby, Andres Munoz, Penn Murfee, Robbie Ray, Paul Sewald and Erik Swanson.
