“Sendei” and Other Kazakh-Language Pop You Should Check Out

There’s a whole lot of Kazakh-language pop, both under the rubric of “Q-pop” and outside it, that I haven’t been able to cover here. Consider the below not a full list, by any means, but just a few more samplings to get you started; and if you want to branch out, the Gakku TV YouTube channel is waiting, as is this playlist.

In no particular order:

AsSun: I know absolutely nothing about him, save that he produced the gem linked above and that his stage name does not play well with English-biased search engines. He doesn’t seem to have anything else out yet, and I am impatient: anybody who weds ABC and The 1975 this successfully needs to be making more music this instant.

Zhanar Dugalova: She started with the group KeshYou, then went solo and has become very successful doing so: winning Turkvision (with a self-composed track), welcoming people to EXPO, and also coming out with the single “Aita Bersin,” which is great, and not just because she invited AZ and ZaQ to perform on it at Gakku Melodies.

KeshYou: After Zhanar Dugalova left them (I presume) they were a trio for a while; more recently they’ve added a fourth member and dedicated themselves, in singles this year “Қалай ғана“ and “Неге?”, to a polished but imaginative combination of fashion, makeup, and earworms. (By the way, if you like the female lead in the “Sendei” video, she makes a cameo appearance in the video for “Қалай ғана.”)

Ayumi: Under the same management as Renzo (Ringo World Entertainment) and similarly prone to dancing in cleared-out industrial storage buildings, as in their 2015 hit “Hey La.”

Ziruza: Is a cutie with much potential for bop production.

Black Dial: Have a new single out just this week! yay! (now if we have to wait another month for the promised fifth single off Qarangy Zharyq, I’ll be even more convinced that the brothers Bedelkhan are trying not to step on each other’s groups’ release dates.)

Moonlight: The fourth and newest entrant in this year’s Summer of Q-Pop Boy Bands. “Tokyo” runs out of ideas midway through, but is still pretty catchy; “Qasymda bol” is slower-paced but better structured.

Newton and Crystals: Two brand-new groups I haven’t been following. Newton’s debut song is “Жалықтым”; Crystals’ is “Adastyrma.”

and finally: separate from all this, but worth mentioning, is Dimash Kudaibergen (or Kudaibergenov), who has risen to fame via a Chinese singing competition show. To give you an idea of what the fuss is all about, here he is singing “S.O.S.” from the French rock opera Starmania.

"Robin! Sweet little birdie- well he's taller than me, but still. He's so sweet, I don't really care what he uses my lobby for, but he always cleans up after himself and isn't too bothered when I'm running behind schedule with clients. He usually gives me like a few days notice anyway. He always talks all fancy and shit it's cute." The rabbit chuckles, "But no he's sweet. He's very considerate of other people, always offers me a ride home if I text him drunk, he's so compassionate I don't know how he's in the line of work he is.

Like- I'm not as close to him as I am Haru, but I always enjoy hearing him talk about things while I work. He's such a romantic too- I don't know how he does it."

Aita, despite being on something like birth control for his estrus cycle, will not have sex without a condom unless it's someone he sleeps with regularly. He is very strict about it. If an accident happens like it breaking he pulls himself away and immediately goes to clean himself out, it ends there. Not either of their faults he just doesn't want to risk catching something.

On the grass in a cemetery. He did not enjoy it. It was extremely cold and he felt awkward the entire time, but you'll never know how you feel about something until you try it once right?

Aita's had many embarrassing moments over the years of going to parties and being around people in general. He doesn't dwell on them and he and Luka often just joke about it. He doesn't want to hold onto things like that as something negative when most of the time he's sure no one else really remembers.

A sunny day somewhere in the high 70s to low 80s (f) or if he's near the coast he likes the 90s to him that's beach weather. He doesn't mind the cold, but he hates winter. During the winter his fur gets so long and if he doesn't trim it he thinks he looks very ridiculous, he hates having that extra step to his routine. His favorite season is summer, he likes the warm weather and the sun even if it gets too hot sometimes.

6. A gentle peck

Parties in penthouses weren't things he was usually invited to, mostly house parties thrown by college kids hoping to get free tattoos in their parents kitchen, but this? This was insane. Not that he remembers most of the night, he vaguely remembers Robin helping him up when his heels slipped on the hard wood one time. Not that it mattered.

He glances at the snowy haired man next to him giving him a water bottle and asking him if he needs a ride home only to perk up and shake his head when he hears Haru's voice still about as out of it as he was.

He immediately stands up kissing him quickly, "Haru! You ready to go??" The artist's eyes drifted to Tarhos before immediately hugging him and pressing a kiss to his heart since he can't reach his face. Maybe he was still more out of it than he thought- at least the wall of a man was very much still sober and Aita wrapped his arm around his to be led down the stairs and to the car where Luka was in the back already waiting.

Confidence. He loves a confident man, but they have to be able to not take themselves seriously. He doesn't want to sleep with anyone that has a stick up their ass, the only thing that should be in there is his strap or his fingers.

Minor pet play. Collar him and tell him he's a good boy, but he's also super embarrassed about it, because he is a rabbit. It's a little weird.
