Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should resign, calling him an obstacle to a two-state solution.
THE BIG PICTURE: Speaking about the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and the prime minister's counteroffensive, Pelosi said Netanyahu is ultimately responsible.
• "We recognize Israel's right to protect itself. We reject the policy and the practice of Netanyahu. Terrible," she said in an interview with RTÉ's Six One News in Ireland. "What could be worse than what he has done in response?"
WHAT SHE'S SAYING: Pelosi said he has been an obstacle to peace in the region for years.
• "I don't know whether he's afraid of peace, incapable of peace, or just doesn't want peace, but he has been an obstacle to the two-state solution," she added.
ZOOM OUT: The comments come after the House on Saturday voted on a bipartisan basis to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package, that $26 billion in aid for Israel and for humanitarian crises in conflict zones, including in Gaza.
• Many House Democrats grappled bitterly about the vote over concerns with Israel's conduct in Gaza and the inclusion of aid for Gaza and other humanitarian crisis spots.
GO DEEPER: U.S. urges Israel to "be careful and strategic" regarding response to Iran attack
Editor's note: This story was corrected to show the $26 billion for Israel includes roughly $9 billion for humanitarian aid (not $26 billion for military aid to Israel).

#OTD in Irish History | 18 April:
1608 – Sir Cahir O’Doherty of Inishowen revolted and sacked Derry. 1689 – Siege of Derry began. In 1688, James II, a Catholic, was deposed by his Protestant daughter, Mary, and her husband, William of Orange, in a bloodless coup known as the Glorious Revolution. James fled to France and in 1689 landed in Ireland, hoping to incite his Catholic supporters there and regain the British throne. Aided…

So currently, Ireland's national broadcaster, RTÉ is in the middle of a major corruption scandal that's already see the resignation of the Director General and the ruined reputation of the man they touted as their "biggest star".
But the thing I find funny is that you're still able to get unbiased reporting on this from the RTÉ News website.
A quote from a recent article:
The latest information has sent shock waves through the political system which is now braced for RTÉ resignations. This revelation has been described as highly significant and there is a view that it signals a level of dysfunction and disarray beyond what emerged last week.
It's being reported that a lot of people within the organization are absolutely furious about all this, and I can genuinely believe it.

RTé reviews Muse
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Label: A&E Records (Warner Bros) Year: 2006 Duration: 45 minutes
4/5 stars
By Bill Lehane
On 'Black Holes and Revelations' Muse show that their music continues to mix the dark and ominous with the purely playful to enjoyable effect.
'Take A Bow' announces the arrival of their fourth album with rising power chords, batches of synthesised loops and harmonised vocals of damnation. Taken together it's an aural onslaught that almost sounds overblown enough to make the composer of the 'Flash Gordon' theme tune blush; pure Muse in other words.
Skyward piano notes and shuttle engine guitars launch 'Starlight', a sweet-sounding space rock love song that is entirely irony-free. It's as if The Darkness had never existed.
While much has been reported of Muse taking on a new found funk style, in truth this is only in evidence on the Prince-like 'Supermassive Black Hole'. If it wasn't for the vocoder, guitar effects pedals and apocalyptic theme this groovy, syncopated shuffle could sit comfortably on a Franz Ferdinand album.
You could be forgiven for humming REM's 'Everybody Hurts' at the start of 'Soldier's Poem', a meditation on the war in Iraq taken from the lesser heard perspective of a British soldier. It shows Muse can hold back the instrumentation and create a plaintive political statement.
The relative calm is fleeting however. As if to bridge the gap back into normal service, a military drum beat opens 'Invincible', a slow burning romance that is classic Muse material, combining ascending guitars, crashing percussion and roaring vocals.
Perhaps the main difference between this album and Muse's popular last outing, 'Absolution', is the group's relative restraint on string arrangements. Having said this, there is a string section, both unplugged and plugged guitars and a trumpet on another highlight, 'City Of Delusion', an unashamedly prog rock track that boasts couplets like "I choose to hide from the All Seeing Eye/Destroy this city of Delusion".
And if this was not evidence enough of their prog rock credentials, the sleeve notes mention 'antique crushing' alongside more regular instrumental credits. Without the flaming comet of Muse, the galaxy of mainstream rock would be a dull place indeed.

Responding to the Lifetime Achievement Award announcement, Rea said: "So much of Irish culture has been recovered and reimagined. Music, language, literature, theatre.
Tumblr media
Stephen Rea will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award
"And cinema can be added to that list because of the special energy of John Boorman who produced Neil Jordan's first film Angel. And to my astonishment, my first film too. Neil thrust the script and a saxophone into my hands and suddenly I was in the movies. Well, one really original movie, which was at the beginning of a new confidence in Irish cinema.
"And now many films later, IFTA have, equally surprisingly, offered me a Lifetime Achievement Award. A lifetime of collaboration with the most generous and creative artists you could ever work with. And hang out with. Thanks to all of them. Thank you IFTA."

#OTD in 2012 – Death of Bernard Noël 'Banjo Barney' McKenna, a musician and a much-loved founding member of The Dubliners.
Barney McKenna was the last surviving founding member of the Irish folk group the Dubliners. With Luke Kelly’s powerful voice and force of nature on stage, Ronnie Drew’s gravelly memorable vocal sound, it was McKenna’s playing of the tenor banjo, coupled with John Sheahan’s fiddle, that gave the Dubliners their original instrumental quality. In the process, McKenna redefined the role of the banjo…
