CATBALOGAN CITY
*THE HISTORY OF CATBALOGAN CITY* Catbalogan City was founded in October 1596 by Spanish Jesuit priests and became the capital of the entire island of Samar. Friar Francisco de Otazo, S.J., who arrived in the Philippines in 1596, founded the Catbalogan Mission and was thus the first missionary to bring the Catholic faith to the people of Catbalogan. In 1627, Catbalogan was raised to the status of residencia (residence or central house) and among its dependencies were Paranas where in 1629 Father Pedro Estrada actively evangelized the area and Calbiga where he took whiterocks or grey limestone to use as building blocks for its church. The church has some arc-like stone roof that was pasted together to dry on each block, giving an arching force to the side. On October 17, 1768, Catbalogan was ceded to the Franciscans who took over from the Jesuits. The first Franciscan parish priest was Fray Jose Fayo, OFM. During the early days of Spanish colonization of the Philippines in the 16th century, Samar was under the jurisdiction of Cebu but later was declared a separate province. In 1735, Samar and Leyte were united into one province with Carigara, in Leyte, as the capital. The union, however, did not prove satisfactory. In 1768, Catbalogan City became the provincial capital when Samar separated from Leyte and became an independent province. On January 27, 1900, the Americans captured Catbalogan City during the Philippine-American War (1899–1902). On June 17, 1902, a provincial civil government was established on Samar Island by an act of the Philippine Commission with Julio Llorente of Cebu as the first governor of Samar. On May 24, 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces landed in Barrio Pangdan and occupied the capital. On December 18, 1945, American and Filipino forces liberated Catbalogan City from the Japanese. In 1948, the barrios of Jiabong, Jiaan, Malino, San Fernando, Casapa, Camoroboan, Lologayan, Magcabitas, Paglayogan, Dogongan, Bayog, and Malobago were separated to form the municipality of Jiabong. On June 19, 1965, the Philippine Congress, along with the province's three congressmen, Eladio T. Balite (1st District), Fernando R. Veloso (2nd District) and Felipe J. Abrigo (3rd District), approved Republic Act No. 4221 dividing Samar into three provinces, namely Western Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar, respectively. Catbalogan City thus ceased to be the capital of the whole island-province after enjoying the prestige of being the premier town of Samar for 197 years since 1768. On June 21, 1969, under Republic Act No. 5650, Western Samar was renamed Samar with Catbalogan City remaining as the capital. The greatest calamities to occur in Catbalogan City were big fires. The April 1, 1957 conflagration, considered as the most destructive one, caused damage to properties in the amount of thirty million pesos. The next was on May 19, 1969, where damage was estimated at twenty million pesos and the more than century-old Saint Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church was razed to the ground. Paradoxically, like the proverbial Phoenix, each time Catbalogan City suffered under the throes of these calamities, better buildings and infrastructures emerged from the ashes. As early as 1960, Catbalogan already agitated to become a city. In 1969, Rep. Fernando P. Veloso sponsored House Bill No. 1867 creating Catbalogan into a city. The bill was being deliberated in the Philippine Senate, but the blaze of 1969 unfortunately caused it to be shelved. Subsequent efforts were made by Catbalogan political leaders, including former Representative Catalino V. Figueroa, during his term, to make Catbalogan's cityhood dream a reality despite strong and rabid opposition by the League of Cities of the Philippines, particularly Catbalogan City's neighboring Calbayog under the administration of Mayor Mel Senen Sarmiento. On March 15, 2007, Catbalogan finally attained its cityhood. Under the sponsorship of Senator Alfredo S. Lim and by virtue of Republic Act No. 9391, Catbalogan was converted into a component city known as the CITY of CATBALOGAN following a unanimous vote by the Philippine Senate. Senator Manuel Villar, Jr. (President of the Senate), Congressman Jose De Venecia, Jr. (Speaker of the House of Representatives), Oscar G. Yabes (Secretary of the Senate), Roberto P. Nazareno (Secretary General, House of Representatives) and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (President of the Philippines) were among its signatories. The residents of Catbalogan overwhelmingly ratified this change through a Comelec plebiscite on June 16, 2007 with over 92% "Yes" votes for cityhood. However, Catbalogan temporarily lost its cityhood, along with 15 other cities, after the Supreme Court of the Philippines, in a very close 6–5 vote, granted a petition filed by the League of Cities of the Philippines, and declared the cityhood law (RA 9391) which allowed the town to acquire its city status, unconstitutional. On December 10, 2008, Catbalogan and the other 15 cities affected filed a motion for reconsideration with the Supreme Court. More than a year later, on December 22, 2009, acting on said appeal, the Court reversed its earlier ruling as it ruled that "at the end of the day, the passage of the amendatory law (regarding the criteria for cityhood as set by Congress) is no different from the enactment of a law, i.e., the cityhood laws specifically exempting a particular political subdivision from the criteria earlier mentioned. Congress, in enacting the exempting law/s, effectively decreased the already codified indicators. As such, the cityhood status of Catbalogan was effectively restored. *TOURIST SPOTS IN CATBALOGAN CITY* Catbalogan City is the capital of the province of Samar or Western Samar. It is a hundred kilometres away from Tacloban City, the regional center of Eastern Visayas. Catbalogan is known for its fishing industry that is why it is celebrating a month-long festivity called Manaragat Festival during the month of August. Manaragat means fishermen in English. The 24th of August is the city’s Fiesta in honor of St. Bartholomew, the Patron Saint of Catbaloganons. I had the chance to explore this wonderful capital city of Samar and decided to write an article about it. Whether you’re a Catbaloganon or a tourist who wants to explore this beautiful city, here are 12 things to do or places to visit within Catbalogan in no particular order. 1. Visit Catbalogan City Hall and see this unique Monument of Rizal. The monument of Dr. Jose Rizal located at the park in front of Catbalogan City Hall is probably the most unique Rizal monument in the world. This monument, representing a bust of Rizal on the top of his two novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, carried by three muscular men who are all naked except for a leaf that covers their frontal private parts, was sculptured by Miguel Alcazar, a native of Catbalogan. 2. Take pictures of Samar Provincial Capitol. Visiting Catbalogan City is visiting the capital of the province of Samar. Thus, don’t forget to set your foot in front of the Samar Provincial Capitol Building. A picture with this majestic and neo-classical structure would probably one of the best souvenirs you can have when you visit Catbalogan. 3. Hang out at Imelda Park and remember the history behind the Obelisk. The Obelisk is located at the park in front of the Capitol building. The Obelisk depicts the four major events in Samar’s history: the 1901 Balangiga Encounter during the Philippine-American War (1899–1902); the 1649 Sumuroy Rebellion led by Juan Sumuroy in Palapag against the Spaniards; the arrival of the first Jesuit missionaries to Samar on October 15, 1596; and the August 11, 1841 declaration of Samar as an independent province by Queen Isabella II of Spain. Imelda Park is one of Catbaloganons’ favorite places to hang out with friends, families, and kids. Several big trees make the park a great place to play, jog, or just relax and breath some fresh air. 4. Honor the Patron Saint of Catbalogan at St. Bartholomew Church. The Church of St. Bartholomew was originally built in 1616. However, its present form was formed when Father Felix Carreon, OFM set out to repair the church in 1814, more than 50 years after it was first burned in 1760. The altars of the church were constructed by Father Martin de Yepes. The church was burned for a second time in 1835 but was rebuilt by the Franciscans. The old image of the patron saint, St. Bartholomew, is presently kept in the rectory. The Church is located at San Bartolome Street in Catbalogan City. 5. Pay a tribute to the victims of the MV Doña Paz tragedy at The Pieta Park. The Pieta Park is located adjacent to St. Bartholomew Church. The park has a statue of The Pieta, a statue that depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. It serves as a memorial to honor Catbaloganons and four thousand-plus other who perished in the tragic collision of MV Doña Paz and the oil tanker MT Vector on December 20, 1987. 6. Relax at Rosario Hills Mountain View Park Resort. Located at Brgy. New Mahayag in Catbalogan City, the resort is a great place to go if you have kids with you. The place offers separate swimming pools for adults and children. They also have a children’s playground, which includes kiddie rides, swings, see-saws, monkey bar and slides. This is a perfect choice if you prefer to view a rice field, climb green hills, and relax in a mountainside resort. 7. Enjoy swimming and the food at Juvie’s Resort & Restaurant. If you prefer a seaside resort and feel the breeze of Maqueda Bay, then you might love Juvie’s Resort & Restaurant at Brgy. San Roque Buri Island. The resort offers a restaurant built at the beach and a swimming pool overlooking Maqueda Bay. Juvie’s Resort also offers various accommodations ranging from native types villas and nipa hut cottages if you like to stay overnight or even longer. 8. Chill out at M Grand Royale Resort. M Grand Royale Resort is one of the best places that I visited in Catbalogan City. Located inside Executive Heights in Brgy. Guinsorongan, the resort is situated on a hilltop. It has an infinity pool and a restaurant overlooking Maqueda Bay. This place will give you an elegant view of Catbalogan city’s sunset. It is truly an ultimate tourist destination in the city, and it’s just a few minute ride from Catbalogan downtown area. 9. Experience once-in-a-lifetime adventure at Central Cave. With more than 100 caves that have been officially indexed and more than a thousand caves still to be explored, Samar Island posed to be the caving capital of the Philippines. Located at Barangay Kawayan, the Central Cave is one of the spectacular caves in Samar. Getting inside the Central Cave will give visitors and adventure lovers the opportunity to see the stunning stalagmites, stalactites and other natural formations inside the cave. For a great and safe caving experience, you can reach cave master Joni Abesamis Bonifacio of Trexplore. 10. Watch the colorful Manaragat Festival Parade. The Manaragat Festival is an August month-long celebration to honor St. Bartholomew, the city’s Patron Saint who is believed to preserve the richness of Maqueda Bay and its marine lives for the people of Catbalogan and Samar. The highlight of the festivity is the Manaragat Parade held a day before the fiesta. The parade is joined by various tribes from Catbalogan and nearby towns. The performers wear colorful costumes and dance intricate movements that mimic the fishes and other marine creatures of Maqueda Bay. 11. Shop at Catbalogan Public Market and Centro Mall. Experience the usual life of a Catbaloganon by buying something to cook from the market. Your stay in Catbalogan would not be complete without going to the Catbalogan Public Market. If you need to shop for apparels, the Centro Mall, the city’s biggest department store, is just located next to the public market. 12. Buy dried fish, dried squid and rock oyster for pasalubong. You can also buy those products at the public market or even at the terminal but as far as I remember, during my childhood days, we buy dried fish, dried squid and sisi (rock oyster contained in bottles) at Brgy. Ubanon. As Catbalogan is famous for its fishing industry, those marine products could be your best pasalubong for your friends and loved ones. *DELICACIES IN CATBALOGAN CITY* Bestsellers include corioso (crunchy butter cookies), torta (an ensaymada-like cake), roscas (sugar sprinkled cookies), Delicias de Pili, Hopia de Pili, Polvoron de Pili, & Ube Pastillas. Binagol is a local specialty made of grated talyan root (a type of root crop similar to taro) steamed in a coconut shell and wrapped and tied in banana leaves. Binagol is mixed with coconut milk, condensed milk, sugar and cooked like a sticky cake.

Family Photo
Dated: Fall of Year XXXX
Lore Below:
After the birth of their second child, the Alcazars immigrated to the Ferngil Republic. The siblings lived in a middle class neighborhood for most of their lives, moving around very often until their father (previously only a contract worker) landed a spot as a senior engineer at a Joja Corp Subsidiary.
As young children, the two were like opposites. Luz was a ray of sunshine, while Rosario was more reserved. However, as the siblings grew older and faced more hardships, it seems like their personalities switched...

Profile Template by Lantos
Luz Alcazar
Basics:
❤ She/Her
❤ Age: 20 (23 by the time she moves in with Rosario in year 3)
❤ Height: 6'0
❤ Demisexual Lesbian
❤ Fillipino
Personality:
Luz is a soft-spoken and shy individual. Her upbringing has caused her to become more introverted and she often likes spending time with the farm animals instead of with the townspeople. Despite this, however, it's actually very easy for her to make friends once pushed in the right direction. When she warms up to people she's very physically affectionate and will often pick people up into a bear hug.
Out of the two siblings, Luz is more open about her feelings. It's very easy to get her to cry (out of happiness or sadness), but is more emotionally immature. She's determined to overcome her shortcomings, however, looking to Rosario as a bit of a role model.
Hobbies:
Taking care of the farm animals
Sewing her own dresses
Exploring the forests for cryptids
Biography:
Before moving to the Pelican Town, Luz was studying to be a veterinarian in one of Stardew Valley's most prestigious schools. However, a childhood illness she had reared it's head again, and just before she was able to graduate, she had to drop out to focus on her health.
Despite the obvious need to drop school, her father was furious and things became unsafe to be at home. Her mother suggested that Luz contact her estranged brother, Rosario, for assistance-- and that's how she ended up moving in with him, on his farm, at the end of his 3rd year.
