fic where peter figures out that nightingale is gay but since he doesn’t ever say anything about it, peter assumes that nightingale must be tragically repressed and in the closet bc of the time he grew up in. he thinks that’s a crying shame and tries to “subtly” and “unobtrusively” (peter is not stellar at either) help nightingale feel better about himself and make him Find His Pride. meanwhile, nightingale is perfectly comfortable with his own sexual orientation, has very little hangups about it, and if he’s repressed it’s almost entirely because of the war trauma. he hasn’t been saying anything because he feels it’s not appropriate conversation for the workplace and he’s iffy on how the modern etiquette is re: discussing these things with your coworkers

i love peter so so much. peter’s not trying to be an unreliable narrator or anything, and for the most part he isn’t, but sometimes things.. slip past him. most notably the thing with lesley and she was NOT subtle towards the end of broken homes there. peter’s only human, and his thing is that sometimes he has a preconceived notion about how things are and how people are, and kinda brushes past evidence to the contrary. nightingale could be leading a double life as a drag queen in soho and peter wouldn’t ever know, because his preconceived notion is that nightingale sits at home and reads poetry in his free time
