For testing the hardness of metallic objects, there are a few methods,
like the Rockwell hardness test, the Vickers hardness test, the Knoop hardness test, and the Brinell hardness test.
What is Rockwell hardness test?
The Rockwell test is the most common and easiest method used in the industry.
An indent is there which is inserted into the surface of the material by a major load and then the depth is measured.
It is the quickest and most convenient one used for a larger sample.
What is The Vickers hardness test?
The Vickers test also another one used for measuring the hardness of all types of solid materials.
The diagonal lengths are measured to calculate the hardness of the sample. It is used for both the macro hardness testing and microhardness testing.
What is The Knoop hardness test?
The Knoop test can be the alternative to the Vickers test. It is applicable to materials like ceramic which is brittle and hard as well. The hardness test is done at the micro-level.
The indenter that is used is a pyramidal diamond-shaped and asymmetric.
It is suitable for small areas. It helps to test thin layer hardness like coating. The cracking problem can be solved by this.
What is The Brinell hardness test?
The Brinell hardness test is for materials that have a grain structure and are large in size.
Here a carbide ball is used to measure the hardness optically.
what is Mohs hardness test?
For minerals or rocks, the most common test is the Mohs hardness test.
How to test hardness for woods?
For woods, the most common is the Janka test.
Here, a small steel ball is inserted on the surface and the force is measured to know the hardness.
To get an accurate result, there are a few other factors that must be considered and controlled,
like vibrations, temperature, light, humidity, temperature, etc.

What is the importance of superficial hardness test?
Many products are generated constantly to serve the industry and various other purposes that contribute to the advancement of society.
  The majority of these products are made up of high-tech materials that need to be assessed and evaluated.
The materials used for creating these products need to be tested before they are made into use. One of the most important methods to determine the properties of the material is hardness testing.
The material hardness is the property that enables it to resist bending, deformation, abrasion, cutting, or scratching.
Whether you receive the products from the third-party suppliers or you are going to step into the production process of your products, hardness testing is one of the most crucial steps that must not be avoided.
Hardness tests are performed on materials that measure the indentation depth left by a point with a specific force of a specific shape and for a specific amount of time.
Hardness tests are performed to determine if the materials while performing their indented duties will be able to survive or not.
There are several tests used to determine the hardness of materials and to determine the size of the impression left by the test and hardness. One of the renowned tests is named as superficial hardness test or superficial Rockwell hardness test.
What is Superficial Rockwell hardness test
Rockwell Superficial hardness tests are generally used for the materials that are too small or thin such as coatings, thin strips or carburized surfaces, etc.
Deduced preload (3kgf) and reduced loads (15 kgf, 30 kgf) that are used as a major load is used in the Superficial Rockwell hardness test.
How does it work?
The method of Superficial Rockwell hardness test consists of indenting the material to be tested with a hardened steel ball indenter or a diamond cone.
Under a preliminary minor load that is usually of 3 kgf, the indenter is forced into the material to be tested.
 An indicating device following the movements of the indenter responds to changes in the depth penetration of the indenter when the equilibrium is reached. This indicating device is then set to a datum position.
A resulting increase in the penetration is formed while the additional major load is till applied to the preliminary minor load. The preliminary minor load is maintained while again equilibrium is reached, whereas the additional major load is removed.
The depth of penetration is reduced, allowing partial recovery after the removal of additional major loads.
 The permanent increase in the depth of penetration is used to calculate the Rockwell Superficial hardness number that results from the application and removal of the additional major load.
How is it different from the standard Rockwell hardness test?
The primary difference between the standard Rockwell hardness test and Superficial Rockwell hardness test is that in Rockwell, the pre force is always 10 kgf whereas, in Superficial Rockwell, the pre force is 3 kgf.
Also, the main force or total test force in standard Rockwell hardness test can vary between 60, 100, or 150 kgf.
Whereas, in the Superficial Rockwell hardness test, it can vary between 15, 30, and 45 kgf.
One important point to consider is that the hardness values determined by standard Rockwell hardness test can be converted to Superficial Rockwell hardness test values and vice versa.
Superficial Rockwell method is more commonly used in Europe while it was invented in the USA.
The superficial hardness test is primarily used to test thin layers or components or the materials whose calculated hardness value is outside the standard Rockwell scale.
Importance of Superficial hardness test
There are several thin, soft, and small materials that need to be tested before they are made into use for production purposes.
Hardness tests are considered to be universally valuable mechanical tests that are available to engineers across the globe.
The primary importance of these tests is that they are relatively inexpensive and simple to be conducted, providing a wealth of data and information regarding the material.
Superficial hardness tests hold prime importance in hardness testing methods as it generates the finest results of the thinnest or smallest materials and obtains accurate and highly sensitive readings.
The superficial hardness testers are perfect to be used for workshops, laboratories, inspection labs, and tool rooms, etc. to serve various purposes.
Most of the superficial hardness testers are conformed to ASTM E18 standards.
These standards are formed to get the products according to the international cooperative functioning to enhance the specific strategic procedures performance that results in greater confidence in technical objectives.

Before you Buy: know the difference between Rockwell, Vickers and Brinell Tests?
Have you ever wonder what is the difference between Rockwell hardness tester, Vickers hardness tester and Brinell hardness tester?
Well in the next 4 minutes, I will tell you everything you need to know of how to choose the right hardness tester for you!
The ability of any certain object or substance to resist indentation when a force is applied to it is known as hardness.
An object’s hardness should be classified as a feature or a characteristic rather than one of its properties and the hardness is generally measured by calculating the permanent area of the indentation caused by a fixed load.
The Hardwell and Brinell tests are two specific methods to measure hardness.
Rockwell Test
The Rockwell Test is the easier of the two methods and tends to be more accurate. It can be utilized for testing metals of all sorts including hard metals (unlike Brinell Tests), except for circumstances where external factors play a part in preventing it.
It also happens to be the most commonly used test.
The Rockwell Test uses specific steps to measure hardness.
Unlike the Brinell Test, it uses a smaller indenter such as a diamond.
This indenter is used to apply a minor load (Increased load/force is applied later) so as to avoid breaking the surface of the material.
This way it proves to be a less destructive method in comparison to the Brinell Test.
 Vickers Test
The Vickers test is ideal for test materials that do not require much load/force but rather increased accuracy during the testing procedure.
Equipped with the sharp point of its diamond indenter, the Vickers test also makes use of an optical system that enables magnification of the material’s target area.
This magnification ability allows the tester to focus on microelements on the surface and thus, be more accurate. This is vastly different from the other tests.
However, compared to the Brinell and Rockwell Tests, the Vickers Test is more expensive due to the preparation required and the cost of obtaining the optical system.
The testing procedure also takes more time than the Rockwell Test.
 Brinell Test
The Brinell Hardness Test method happens to be the very first test that was used widely.
It is usually used to measure the hardness of metallic materials with a specific preference given to materials that are rough.
It also may be the case that the material is simply unsuitable to go through other tests, thus leaving the Brinell test as the sole method of determining hardness.
The Brinell test, however, is not suitable for materials that have hardened too much with hardened steel being one of the obvious examples.
In addition to that, this method also happens to be quite slow in comparison to other tests and tends to make irreparable imprints on the metallic object or material.
