I think one of the main reasons I dislike Fantasy High Junior Year is because of the way it was marketed. Like, there's an entire video explaining how Kristen is gonna go through this major character arc and ditch some of her more wacky antics as she realizes that the chaos she creates isn't cute anymore... and then there's absolutely no payoff. Instead, Kristen is at her quirkiest and most chaotic and other than a few dressing downs from some NPCs that she completely ignores nothing happens.

Like, I've never had a problem with Kristen's disaster personality. I think they handled it just fine in the first two seasons so that she never became too annoying or unlikeable. But it's just dialed up to 11 in Season 3. To the point where its genuinely not funny. And if chaos isn't cute, that'd make sense. It'd be on purpose, so everything can come crumbling down Fabian style and she'd have to become a better person. But that doesn't happen. So you're left sitting through all this garbage with the promise of a payoff that doesn't exist, which just leaves you bitter at the end.

It's especially frustrating when a few characters try to lead her in that direction. Like, Riz is working his ass off to get Kristen the presidency, something she only really wants as an ego boost, with no real platform or plans she can think of. He's the one joining all the clubs. He's the one making all the plans. Hell, he's the one making sure they're all doing well in their classes. And it gets to the point where his mom flat out tells Kristen that Riz would make a better president than her.

In any other story, that would immediately que the audience in to how Kristen's arc is gonna get resolved. With her abandoning the presidency and giving it to Riz, apologizing for making him do so much work for her and rewarding him for his effort. This followed up by deciding to be better for Cassandra, another person she mistreated and took for granted.

But she doesn't. Instead, she just makes Riz her vice president at the end and pushes all the work onto him AGAIN, to the point where it undoes the only character development he got all season (him shifting back to coffee from tea the moment Kristen makes him VP). And it certainly doesn't help that its the middle class white girl making her poor minority friend do everything for her.

Like, why market it as Kristen getting serious when that doesn't happen? Why act like she has some arc when she doesn't? It only makes the audience bitter when they went in expecting serious consequences and got nothing.

The marketing was very weird. Not only was there the false advertising with Baron's second form, which really hurts me to say as someone who sees Dropout as a bastion of ethics-based capitalism, but something just didn't sit right with me about the hype blimey got when it happened. Like, yes, it was funny, but like...ultimately I was like, alright? It wasn't anything actually important? It was specifically something Brennan was once again pushing really hard for them to succeed at because it was something they had to pass to continue to the next leg of the story?

Back when the Second Place episode of Game Changer came out, I saw someone complain about Dropout going back to the Brennan monologue well. I was like, hey, I love that shit, if you don't like the premise of a show don't watch it, right?

But here the commercialization of the cast's quirks and specific styles might have, I think, crossed a line, because of just how underwhelming blimey was compared to how it was built up. Like, Ally's quirky insane rolls drive Brennan crazy, haha, okay. The Brennan monologue well is, IMO, far from dry, but D20's hysterical theatrics in situations like that is getting stale, or at least that's how it felt this season.

favorite thing about them- oh my angel!! her introduction was literally everything to me- “do you want a friend” “desperately” shattered me! i watched her intro on youtube and just seeing that was literally what made me find a way to pay for dropout because i needed to know her and i was NOT prepared for how much i would adore her.

least favorite thing about them: i quite honestly cant think of anything? every scene she was in brought me so much serotonin

favorite line: oh goodness this has led me to watch that youtube video thats literally just all the ayda scenes oh my goodness. i need to rewatch sophomore year. “NOOO IT’S TOO CUTE” about boggy wearing a backpack!! “if i was you, i wouldn’t want to be anyone else” & ALSO WHEN SHE PULLED OUT THE CONTRACT FOR FIG BEFORE THE KISS. I FELT THAT ON AN EMOTIONAL LEVEL WHAT A MOOD.

brOTP: adaine!! gorgug!! riz! garthy!! give her all the friends!!!

OTP: fig!! I BLESS THIS UNION!!!! the way fig is always pretending to be other people, but ayda sees her and loves her anyway! the way fig starts the party just so ayda will stick around, EVERYTHING JUST EVERYTHING JUST T H E M!

nOTP: i haven’t seen other ayda ships honestly?

random headcanon: that one hc post thats just about her and gorgug’s friendship and how they both look out for fig just makes me soft. also i feel like her and riz would really get along well too!!

unpopular opinion: pirol finale spoilers---- as hyped as i was to see her in the finale and how much i wanted her in the season, that scene felt a lil forced/rushed? like,, i really loved it don’t get me wrong i adore her and cheese being friends, but it felt a lil fan service-y? like most everything else in the season stood alone well without watching any fantasy high but i feel like if i hadn’t known ayda previously that scene woulda felt out of place ig.

OTP: i mean like,, i don’t really have one? this probably is my unpopular opinion too but i’m not like,, super attached to him & zelda? like they’re super sweet don’t get me wrong! i’m just not like, seeking out content for those two i guess lol. i did love him working so hard just to be able to fix things with her in sophomore year like he INVENTED A CELL TOWER. WHAT A KING.

nOTP: hmm idk? i don’t see many gorgug ships floating around so its hard to say! i can’t really see him with any of the bad kids honestly ig? i’d have to be Convinced

random headcanon; if he ever has an idea for a song/something with the tour he’s probably nervous to bring it up with fig and i think it’d take a few times of him doing so before he got comfortable with sharing his ideas? i feel like he sees it as fig’s thing more then their thing sometimes? i could be off though i need a rewatch

bad kids sleepover

okay like i’m suffering because we have to wait until next week and then their just gonna be gone?? i’m not coping well so i thought what would their sleepovers be like:

-i’m imagining this being at some point after they’ve killed coach daybreak but before the shit with aelwyn goes down

-riz’s apartment has become a hangout for the kids because sklonda is working a lot so they can plot all of their shenanigans (you know they went on some small scale adventures during that time) without adults being like ‘you are fucking children stop’ and lbr gilear’s apartment is just a bit sad and smells like yogurt no matter how hard fig tries

-kristen stays over a lot because her parents suck and adaine does when she can, so fig proposes An Official Sleepover

-fabian obviously pretends to be horrified at the idea of sleeping in such squalor but like he loves being with his friends and gorgug’s happy to be along for the ride, his parents so cry when he tells them

-adaine brings food with her even though she’s there like all the time since she’s been Formally Invited it would be improper for her to show up empty handed, the elven whey bread is fine but like it’s a sleepover, they’re gonna order pizza, like so much pizza, gorgug and riz can eat like 1 each, adaine is so fucking hyped to try it for the first time though, fabian continues to fake complain

-fig supplies the tunes to the get together because she insists that they all need to learn about Real Music, gorgug is the only one allowed to change the songs

-she’s also insists that they all play truth or dare, first thing she does is dare kristen to text tracker and ask her out on a real proper date and riz dares adaine to go harass poor gilear down the hall, she tries to know door, run but feels too bad forgets to run and pretends she wanted turkey crackers

-they put on a movie like idk, fantasy!the notebook because the only dvds they have are fig’s chick flicks from when she was a prep, fig pretends she’s only putting it on ironically but they all fucking cry at the end

-when they go to sleep they all just spread out blankets and sleeping bags in riz’s living room and riz gets entirely too close to fabian just to piss him off and he’s like “can i have some personal fucking space, the ball?”

-even though kristen isn’t really on good terms with her parents anymore she’s still like ‘holy shit i’m at a boy girl sleepover, this is wild, my parents would flip’ to herself

-then there’s the question of who’s the first one to say something just so fucking stupid or random when everything goes quiet, kristen or gorgug are the obvious choices i feel but like i can also imagine fig doing her ‘i don’t know if you guys could tell because i’m so closed off but like you’re my best friends’ speech and everyone is like we fucking know fig and then kristen is like ‘yeah guys i trust you enough to tell you i’m like really doubting myself and i might like girls’ and they’re all like again we fucking know, gorgug for some reason brings up his dad stuff

-fabian eventually is like ‘okay that’s enough can we all just go to sleep?’ and they all just immediately start full on bickering which somehow devolves into them all just laughing and they’re all just super cute and best friends and this is no longer coherent because i’m fucking emo and i’m gonna miss them

-they go to sleep and when they wake up riz is fully on top of fabian and fabian the first thing he does is push him to the floor, fig is a total cuddle monster and managed to sandwich herself between gorgug and kristen and adaine despite being like the second smallest is taking up just so much space

-look they all just had a fucking magical time because they’re best fucking friends and it was great the fucking end
