Yun being able to bend the tiniest bit of earth, down to the element being ground up into paint, VS Kyoshi literally raising the ocean floor and bending huge pieces of earth, in this essay I wILL-
why did no one tell me the kyoshi novels are brutal. she was born to an airbender who defected and got snakes tattooed over her arrows. she can only bend huge pieces of earth. her friends are dangerous criminals sworn to protect her and follow her lead. local villagers thought she was a dragon when she used the avatar state. she killed a man by picking him up with air bending and then dropped him from several feet in the air. she mastered a form of bending where you use the elements as steps and basically walk on air. all of this while on the run from the law and being hell bent on a mission of revenge.
The confusing struggle that comes when your past life reminds you of the mother that left you, and the adopted father figure that died for you. Poor Kyoshi.
We know the Beifong family is one of the most powerful families in the Earth Kingdom. But I love how it was more solidified in the Kyoshi novels, reading how much influence a Beifong had in Kyoshi’s era, though for not the best reasons.
I love details like these that expands the Avatar Universe and shows how much times have changed since then. The Beifongs went from looming prominent figures in Kyoshi’s time to becoming friends and companions fighting for 2 of her reincarnations. I think that’s just so cool and beautiful.
Something I noticed after reading The Shadow of Kyoshi:
Both Kuruk and Hei-Ran willingly sacrifice their reputation for the greater good—Kuruk to protect Yangchen’s legacy and keep the world and his friends safe, and Hei-Ran to protect her country (among other things).
bro every avatar’s mental health is an absolute mess, wdym yangchen had schizophrenia. then kuruk had depression and kyoshi some severe childhood traumas. then there’s roku just standing there. then we have aang also traumatized and then korra too. PLS CAN’T ONE OF THEM BE HAPPY??
