“Corruption” CSRGOVE Blog Entry 9 (week 9)
See - Experience
Corruption has a lot of forms and all are prejudicial to the people or system being corrupted. One form of corruption is malversation. It is manipulating people by misusing their trust and doing things that are different from what was promised. This form of corruption comes from people’s greed. They are willing to deceive others for their own personal gain. Then the other form of corruption is also closely related to the first one which is also a form of deception. This is altering other people’s thoughts or way of thinking by using scandalizing them or convincing them to think and act in a way towards your advantage. According to a quote from Malindog-Uy’s (2020) article about the corruption amid the pandemic, “corruption is a form of dishonesty or criminal offense undertaken by a person or organization entrusted with a position of authority, to acquire illicit benefit or abuse of power for one’s private interests and gains.”
Corruption may be done by all sorts of people, and its gravity ranges from the level of prejudicial cause and deceitfulness towards others. Recently there have been perceived corrupt activities that happened in the Philippine Government. Two of the most recent speculated corruptions in the Philippines are the corruption in Philhealth (Malindog-Uy, A., & Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, 2020) and the corruption in the white sand Manila Bay project (Kravchuk, 2020).
Analyze - Reflection
Corruption should not be practiced by anyone by any means or gravity. People cannot justify wrong actions by the gravity of it, therefore we must all stay away from it and do what is right even though it may be harder for us, for it does not require us taking advantage of others, misusing their trust or destroying something for our own benefit.
What happened in Philhealth was, people inside the Philhealth, employees and syndicates have been making fraudulent scheme of padded medical claims and treatments for ghost patients. (Malindog-Uy, A., & Anna Rosario Malindog-Uy, 2020) This is a very grievous kind of corruption as funds for the true Philhealth holders are being deducted for the own pockets of these fraudulent syndicates and employees. The money that could have been spent on other people’s health was instead used for the personal benefits of the fraudulent people.
The Manila Bay project which costed P389-M to clean and put white sand on (Perez-Rubio, 2020) is also a form of corruption. It is corruption since it has destroyed the marine ecosystem in the area in Cebu where the dolomite was extracted (Mayol, 2020).  This is corrupting the environment for the artificial and unnecessary improvement in the Manila Bay area. The white sand part of the project did not have to be done. The project should have just stayed with the course of cleaning and rehabilitating the bay instead of adding the unnecessary beautification using dolomite which caused the destruction of other environments.
Commitment - Action
We can see the unjustly things that are happening within our community, and we often feel like there is nothing we can do to stop it. Corruption has been plaguing our country for generations. What we can do as students and youths of our community is, to make sure that there will be an improvement in the future, for we are the future. We must do everything that we can in order to stop corruption. We must raise awareness about corruption, to make sure that people know about the types of corruption, so that they will have every knowledge what is right and what is wrong. We must inform our fellow youth, so that they too will not be corrupt to others and the environment in the future.
