CQ NEWS (Eddie DeYoung, AE7AA, Named CQ Magazine Awards Editor). A press
release, dated August 29th, from Richard Moseson (W2VU), Editor of CQ
Amateur Radio, reports the following: Eddie De Young, AE7AA, of Clearwater,
Florida, has been named Awards Editor of CQ Amateur Radio magazine, Editor
Rich Moseson, W2VU, announced today. His first Awards column appears in
the September 2019 issue. De Young succeeds Ted Melinosky, K1BV, who was
both Awards Editor and USA-Counties Award Custodian for more than 20 years.
CQ previously announced the appointment of Brian Bird, NX0X, as the new
USA-CA custodian.
De Young has been licensed since 1954 and has, over the years, held more
than two dozen call signs from 11 different countries. He spent 38 years
in the Pacific, Asia and Antarctica, including many in Australia. While
there, he served as Awards Manager for the Wireless Institute of Australia,
where he helped modernize the program and developed software to improve
award processing. He has also been on nearly a dozen DXpeditions.
Since returning to the United States, Eddie has worked summers for the
National Park Service as a park ranger at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
and at Glacier National Park in Montana. On the ham bands, he is active
via remote stations and with limited operation from his new apartment,
with 100 watts and a homemade fractal square loop on his balcony. Eddie
enjoys operating primarily CW and digital modes.
De Young says he plans to offer hints in his column on earning CQ awards
of all kinds, inform newbies how to get started on their award hunting
quests and share how much fun and educational award-chasing can be. Eddie
also says he plans to include occasional competitions, award nostalgia
and ideas from readers.
CQ Editor Rich Moseson said, “Eddie brings a world of experience from
all over the world to this position. As an avid award chaser as well as
someone who has ‘been the DX,’ he understands both sides of the award-
hunting equation and is uniquely qualified to help CQ’s readers achieve
the greatest possible success in their own award-hunting efforts. Plus,
as former awards manager for a national association, he understands the
administrative side of award programs as well. I look forward to working
with Eddie.”

SPECIAL EVENT (Highway to a DX Party!). The Citrus Belt Amateur Radio
Club of San Bernardino <w6jbt.org>, California, is once again hosting
(probably one of the most fun special event activities) the 20th annual
“Route 66 On The Air” special event between September 7-15th. The purpose
of this event is to offer amateur radio operators a fun way to “Relive
the Ride” of their own memories of Route 66, and to celebrate the highway’s
93rd anniversary. The U.S. Highway 66 established in 1926, was the first
major improved highway to link the west coast with the nation’s heartland.
Through stories, songs, and TV shows, the highway came to symbolize the
spirit of the freedom of the open road, inspiring many to see America.
Look for the following 20 stations (two are rovers) operating in or around
the major cities along the old “Route 66” from Santa Monica, California,
to Chicago, Illinois:

Anh Tiền đạo Gabriel Jesus ghi bàn giúp Man City thắng chủ nhà Chelsea 1-0, ở vòng sáu Ngoại hạng Anh hôm 25/9.

In mid-June, Maria Ressa, the co-founder of award-winning Philippines-based news site Rappler and critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, was convicted of cyber libel.
The move against Ressa — who was one of four journalists and one news organization named TIME 2018 Person of the Year for their “pursuit of greater truths” in the face of threats — was the latest blow to free press in the country. Ressa was convicted to between six months and six years in prison, but will remain out of prison while an appeal works its way through the higher courts, potentially to the Philippines’ Supreme Court, according to Rappler.
“The verdict against Maria Ressa highlights the ability of the Philippines’ abusive leader to manipulate the laws to go after critical, well-respected media voices whatever the ultimate cost to the country,” Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. “The Rappler case will reverberate not just in the Philippines, but in many countries that long considered the country a robust environment for media freedom.”
In light of the conviction, Ressa is at the top of the One Free Press Coalition — which includes nearly 40 news organizations, including TIME — list of the 10 most urgent cases threatening press freedom around the world.
Read about the 10 journalists on July’s list here:
Maria Ressa (Philippines)
Filipino-U.S. dual citizen sentenced in cyber libel case.
On June 15, a Manila court convicted Maria Ressa, editor of the privately owned Rappler news website, and Reynaldo Santos, a former researcher at the outlet, of cyber libel. The criminal offense requires each journalist to pay $7,950 in fines and moral damages as well as serve a jail term of six months to six years. Both are free on bail pending their appeal. The case arose from a public interest article Rappler published in 2012 about a local businessman’s alleged ties to a former judge, who was later impeached for corruption, and purported links to drug and human trafficking rings.
Azimjon Askarov (Kyrgyzstan)
Award-winning human rights reporter imprisoned 10 years.
June 15 marked 10 years since ethnic Uzkek Azimjon Askarov was arrested on trumped-up charges that included incitement to ethnic hatred and complicity in the murder of a police officer. A Kyrgyz court heard the final appeal in his case in May and upheld his life sentence. His health is deteriorating in detention, with limited access to medication and mistreatment by prison officials. His wife, Khadicha Askarova, has written to Kyrgyzstan’s president pleading for his release.
Solafa Magdy (Egypt)
Nearly four months without updates from imprisoned journalist in deteriorating health.
No one has received news from freelance reporter Solafa Magdy since March 9. She has been imprisoned alongside her husband for six months and endured deliberate medical neglect while at heightened risk of contracting COVID-19 due to overcrowding and inhumane conditions in Egypt’s prisons. Officials have again delayed trial for charges of “membership of a banned group” and “spreading false news” for her multimedia reporting on human rights and illegal immigration.
Abdulkhaleq Amran, Akram al-Waleedi, Hareth Hameed and Tawfiq al-Mansouri (Yemen)
Four journalists detained five years, now sentenced to death.
On April 11, Yemeni journalists Abdulkhaleq Amran, Akram al-Waleedi, Hareth Hameed and Tawfiq al-Mansouri were sentenced to death by the Ansar Allah group, known as the Houthis, after nearly five years in detention. The journalists were charged with spreading false news “in support of the crimes of Saudi aggression and its allies against the Republic of Yemen.” In June, the UN joined over 150 organizations calling for their release. Their lawyer plans to appeal.
Jean Bigirimana (Burundi)
Four years pass without information regarding journalist’s disappearance.
July 22 marks four years since reporter Jean Bigirimana went missing in the middle of the day after leaving his home in Bujumbura. He had received a phone call from a source in the country’s national intelligence service. He was working as a newspaper and online journalist with the independent Iwacu Press Group and previously with the pro-government radio station Rema FM. He has not been seen or heard from since 2016.
Norma Sarabia Garduza (Mexico)
Investigation idling in case of journalist murdered at her home one year ago.
June 11 marked one year since unknown attackers shot and killed reporter Norma Sarabia in her Huimanguillo residence, yet there has been little movement in the investigation announced on Twitter by the state attorney general’s office at the time. Sarabia, 46, was a correspondent in the Tabasco town near the border with Guatemala for newspapers Diario Presente and Tabasco HOY. She is one of 54 journalists killed in Mexico between 1992 and 2020.
Mohamed Monir (Egypt)
Journalist in poor health being held in pretrial detention without court date.
Plainclothes security officers in Giza arrested veteran journalist and freelance columnist Mohamed Monir on June 15 and ordered pretrial detention for 15 days, a period that can be renewed or extended at the court’s request. Egypt’s national security prosecutor charged Monir with joining a terrorist group, spreading false news and misusing social media. The 65-year-old suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure and severe heart problems. He had recently written for Al Jazeera and criticized the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Samuel Wazizi (Samuel Ajiekah Abuwe) (Cameroon)
Officials reveal journalist died in custody last August.
In June, Cameroonian military announced that news anchor Samuel Wazizi died last August, days after being transferred from police to military custody and held incommunicado. They denied any torturous treatment and alleged that Wazizi died of “severe sepsis.” Lawyers say he was accused of hosting separatist fighters on his farm, an allegation he dismissed. He had worked as a freelance photographer and cameraman as well as a news anchor for privately-owned broadcaster Chillen Muzik and TV (CMTV) covering military atrocities.
Abdulmumin Gadzhiev (Russia)
Authorities bring additional allegations against editor in pretrial detention.
Since his arrest on terrorism charges in June 2019, authorities have also charged Abdulmumin Gadzhiev with participation in an extremist organization and extended his pretrial detention. The new allegation could add 10 years in prison to the potential 20 years Gadzhiev faces on the original charges. He had been working as editor of the religious section of the independent Chernovik newspaper.
Jamal Khashoggi (Saudi Arabia)
Calls for continued investigation into journalist’s death at the hands of government.
Democrats in the U.S. House of Representative are reportedly working on new legislation to push for the release of secret findings regarding the full extent of Saudi Arabia’s role in Jamal Khashoggi’s killing. The Washington Post columnist died inside the Kingdom’s Saudi consulate in 2018. Calls remain for the executive branch to release an intelligence report as well as for an independent criminal investigation and probe into the crown prince’s ordering of the extrajudicial killing.

KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND (Update #3/Postponed). Ron, KH6DV, reports on August
15th, on QRZ.com:
For a number of very good reasons the Midway expedition is being post-
poned. Some of the things we are working on will take a number of months
– one will take 4 or 5 by itself. We could postpone for just a couple
months but then we would be operating during the summer with its associated
terrible conditions.
WE HAVE DECIDED TO PLAN FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS IN OCTOBER 2020
The changes we are working on will make for a much better and more
exciting expedition and are well worth waiting for.

VP6R PITCAIRN ISLAND DXPEDITION NEWS (Updates). The following was posted
on the VP6R Web page (https://pitcairndx.com/news-and-updates/), August
14th and 17th with pictures:
* August 14th: Today the RV Braveheart completed the loading of its
cargo, including all our Pitcairn Island Dxpedition equipment. Our
Flex radios, ACOM amplifiers, Yagi and vertical antennas, masts,
feedlines, computers, network gear, tools, and our personal luggage
is all aboard and securred. The vessel will depart Tauranga, New
Zealand early next week.
We’ve had a slight change in plans which benefits everyone. The
Braveheart will make a preliminary stop at Pitcairn on September 6th.
Our gear will come off the vessel and be stored on the island until
we arrive on about October 17. This should get us on the air faster
and circumvent any potential weather delays.
Things are moving quickly now and our team is anxious to get under-
way. If you’ve supported us, we thank you. If not, please consider
doing so. Cash is flowing out very rapidly now. No matter what, let’s
do this thing and have some fun!
* August 17th: Here are some images taken during the arrival of our
sea container at the pier and the transfer of our gear onto the
Braveheart. It has yet to be stowed and secured. Nigel and a friend
are seen seated in the container. Matt Jolly, Nigel’s son, is in
the “selfie” with our gear in the background. The lattice tower
sections are part of the DX Engineering ninty foot 160 meter vertical.
A complete Flex station is inside nine of the black Pelican cases.
VP9, BERMUDA. Josh, W9HT, will once again be active as W9HT/VP9 from
Bermuda (NA-005) between October 12-15th. Activity will be on various
HF Bands including 6m using SSB, CW, and FT8. QSL via his home callsign
direct.
W4, UNITED STATES (Special Event). Members of the Lake County Amateur
Radio Association (LCARA, N8BC) will activate special event station W4G
for the 103rd anniversary celebration of the National Park Service in
conjunction with the James A. Garfield Presidential Home in Mentor, OH.
This Callsign was chosen so that they could use the phonetics on Phone
of “Washington For Garfield” (Washington 4 Garfield). The celebration
will take place on the grounds of the Garfield Presidential Home on
Sunday, August 25th. They will have stations operating on various bands
and modes to make the special event callsign workable by Amateurs across
North America and possibly the World. They expect numerous stations will
be calling them to say the least!
KH0/WH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Harry, JG7PSJ/JD1BMH/KW2X, will once again be
active as WH0RU from Saipan (OC-086) between September 15-22nd. Activity
