NR!Borough Leaders!
Tumblr media
Howdy big kids! Here’s the semi-official designs for the Newsies Rewritten Borough leaders! I wanted to draw them for a while now! These are also F2U designs as long credit is given to this account or to @flinttflakes as I will occasionally draw something there.
More info under the cut!
As each borough post mentioned, newsies color themselves by borough to show solidarity and pride of where they’re from! Manhattan is blue, Staten Island is green, Queens is yellow, Bronx is orange, and Brooklyn is red! Anyways, about the leaders:
Jack “Cowboy” Kelly: Jack’s design was based off Herrick’s Highschool’s Jack Kelly, played by Tristan Surajbali (he was so good. I love him to bits.) Gave him the icon blue shirt mixed with the OG Jack Kelly red handkerchief around the neck and the cowboy hat.
Cora “Aussie” Foster: Aussie is an oc by sundaymorningtv on tumblr. Not having a description from them, I just envisioned Aussie being a redhead with curly hair and it looks pretty good!
Georgina “Georgie”: Georgie truly belongs to olitheheadphoneskid23. As Georgina has a Greek origin, I went with a Greek appearance and also gave her the waistcloths to kind of show it.
Julian “Smalls” Hunt: Smalls is based on Julian DeGuzman from the live broadway recording, so he is Filipino. His outfit changed the most as I wanted it to be more aligned with the Bronx’ orange color and different from Georgie’s yellow.
Salvatore “Spot” Conlon: Spot’s designed is based on Tommy Bracco and Gabriel Damon for the most part, you can’t really tell there was a Bracco influence on Spot as he’s wearing the OG Spot’s clothes but once I get close up shots it should look more accurate!

Hello yes I would like to know about TCWB NYC's natural and unnatural defenses. How do these personifications deal with monsters, AI-controlled steampunk battlebots, and streets that rearrange themselves to squish people to death.
I'm treating 'smackdown' as meaning we need to know who wins in a fight and my instinct is Mburg but I'd like to know more about Your Guys
Alright buddy, *leans back, cracks knuckles*, you wanna go? Let's go. To quote the book itself: "New York will not take attempted murder lying down."
Ground rules, for those who haven't read The City We Became (read it):
-When a city has enough pull on the collective consciousness, or something cool and metaphysics-y like that, it becomes alive, and chooses an avatar. Or avatars, in NYC's case.
-Every city must also do battle with the Enemy when it becomes alive. The Enemy has, historically, been just a mass of strange white tentacles, a shapeless sort of monster, but recently it's begun using more subtle ways to try and destroy living cities. (A city is made alive by it's people and by how people know it. New Orleans was killed in Hurricane Katrina because people stopped thinking of New Orleans as anything but "the city that got hit by Hurricane Katrina.")
-City avatars can use "constructs" to fight. This looks like different things for different avatars! Some examples: Manhattan, borough where money talks and bullshit walks, literally throws money at the problem (the Enemy) when it appears, buying the land around him back from the Enemy. Brooklyn uses music. At one point, Queens smashes a New York snowglobe into a monster, which knocks it out. They can also channel the collective feelings of New York into power-ups--Manhattan channels annoyance over traffic into something that lets him destroy some of the Enemy. Staten Island uses get-off-my-lawn-y-ness to physically fling the other avatars away from her.
-And then, there's the fights on a city-wide scale. This is a scene in the ending of The World We Make and it's fucking awesome, so awesome I'm gonna put it under a cut because if anyone has read this far and is feeling like they want to read the books themselves, I kinda don't want to spoil it.
Helicopters. Not cop helicopters: reporter helicopters, channeling the power of the press. (It mentioned the Village Voice and I nearly cried.)
And then? A fucking mecha! Steel and skyscrapers and MoMA art for armor! Central Park as a heart and fists made from the concrete and rock underlying everything! It blurs the lines between reality and city-reality, so New York City itself remains intact, but yeah. It's a giant mecha. Like Power Rangers but even more awesome. I would be remiss not to mention the fact that Bronca--the Bronx--is Lenape, and so it also has a Lenape war club, for their oldest inhabitants.
Also: pigeons. And rats. And cockroaches. Gross, and extremely powerful. (And really funny.)
And on top of all this, they can attack conceptually. They channel everything that makes New York New York into their attacks. And, (obviously), they win, eventually.
So, yeah. I'd say New York stands a hell of a good chance in a battle. (Now could we see that reflected in the polls?)

Hipster Afternoon in Queens
The easy curl of Cafe song The smoky, sandy plume Of in-house brew on my tongue Hair the color of The Northern Lights I've had too much Black coffee But the croissant will help (It's stale And a little overpriced But we are all here For the vibes Not the lukewarm pastries Sleeping in their glass case)

So I have never spent any amount of time looking at a map of nyc in all my 31 years of life, so getting on Google maps and staring and studying and Realizing™️ some shit has been hilarious and surreal.
I did not know that their famous subway does not connect to Staten Island.
They were not kidding, that island is Long
The Statue of Liberty is technically in New Jersey waters???
The statue is way further inland (in-bay?) than I realized.
Hell’s Kitchen is larger than I gave it credit for
It’s also like. A block away from Times Square
It always fucks me up that Central Park is. So. Rectangular. Perfectly rectangular. I Know nyc is “a grid system mf” but the park still looks like that image of Colorado superimposed on a natural borders map of the us. It looks weird.
I am not, however, surprised at how fucking massive the park is. I Knew one (1) thing about the city, and it was that.
I truly did not understand that the City is on 3 separate fucking islands. Like I know I have no concept of anything and I know I’ve never had any special interest in nyc, but the more I look at it the more I feel like I’ve never absorbed any information about it ever in my life.
Yonkers.
#3 decades of consuming media and apparently any time literally anything about nyc is mentioned I just nod and say ok#I’m convinced that so much shit takes place in nyc bc you could just say anything and it could be completely inaccurate#but the only ppl who would know are native New Yorkers but they don’t care enough to correct you#they probably think it’s hilarious that you can just. say anything about the city and ppl will believe it.#nyc is a blank slate that can be anything and everything.#Spider-Man is from queens and it makes it sound like a small Burroughs (burrow? neighborhood?)#but queens in HUUUUGE#queens is *the* largest borough (there I googled it. it’s borough) in the fucking city#BOTH the major nyc airports are in! queens!!#to me. a Midwesterner. saying ‘oh I’m from queens :( ‘ makes me think Peter is from some. like. shitty little neighborhood.#IT IS NOT A SHITTY LITTLE NEIGHBORHOOD ITS FUCKING MASSIVE#like maybe it was different in the 60s but I don’t think ‘friendly neighborhood spiderman’ Carrie’s the same implication this side of#the millennium. also! if queens is ‘the most urban area’ of the city. if it’s where most ppl live. if it is ‘the neighborhood’ WHY DOES#SPIDER-MAN SPEND ALL HIS TIME IN MANHATTEN THEN???????#I HATE THIS! I understand less about New York than I did an hour ago when I apparently knew NOTHING about New York!!#at this point I don’t know if it’s the autism or if I’m just stupid but god I really absolutely did not understand anything about nyc ever#to me it really just be ‘it’s all Ohio? always has been. 🔫’#apple talks#to the tune of spam

NR Queens
Tumblr media
Besides the Bronx, Queens is diverse and scrappy. Their scrappiness is purely because they are also the most divided, due to language barriers. Newsies split up by language and sometimes ethnicity, either kicking out newsies they couldn’t communicate with or taking crazy work arounds in order to get a bigger group to protect themselves.
Leaders of Queens are expected to surround themselves by a diverse group in order make sure they can communicate across the entire borough. Their current leader, Georgie, is a bright and talented young 16 year old newsie who managed to make friends with a diverse bunch! She’s well received in the boroughs and is trying to make sure her borough represents themselves with pride. Georgie and her gang are located in the Forest Hills area, a more suburban area but filled with them richies!
They have a lot of work to do to be unanimous, but there’s nothing like a bit of traumabonding and a strike to help them along!
Queens wears mainly a range of yellows, though Canary Yellow, Mustard Yellow and Orange Yellow seem popular with the group. (Yellow represents diversity!). If they’re not wearing yellow in some way, Queens is repping their countries colors. They love to show where their ancestors were from and are mighty proud of their ethnicity.
Credits: Georgie is a Queens borough leader who gained her seat at the table from Kicks, both newsies were made by @ollitheheadphoneskid23
If you want to see your newsie featured in the rewrite, send in an ask with info about your newsie! I’m also accepting small plot points, ideas, and possible headcanons!

as someone who's never been to New York, I've always been a little intimidated by the hypothetical size of the place. the way people describe it, or depict it in movies, it seems so BIG. I imagine someone walking from one end of Manhattan to the other and it taking, like, a day. it takes forever. the Central Park could house an entire city inside of it. and that's just one borough??? what even is a borough!?
anyway I'm watching Unsleeping City on Dimension 20 so this has been stressing me out even more and I decided to look up a size comparison to Los Angelos, the only city I am familiar with, and
Tumblr media
I'm still trying to wrap my mind around this because it's completely changing my worldview. Manhattan is small???? is this right???
like a) I know this isn't strictly showing LA city limits, but I'm not a local so I basically consider Long Beach and Burbank to be LA, and I guess I'd been assuming the distance between them was also the size of the [borough everyone talks about the most so I assumed it was the biggest] Manhattan?? Queens is barely the size (maybe barely a little more) of Downtown LA???
and b) I know because of California driving culture and New York Public Transit existence that the perceived sizes of these spaces is different, like the lived in experience of these spaces, and that's important I get it
I've just gone my whole life assuming the Expected Navigable Size of New York was larger. Because everyone makes such a big deal about it. I'm reassessing lmao
