Look, December 30th, 1952. The Disney version of Peter Pan was about to be released in early 1953, so Look gives it a nice preview here.

Motion Picture and Television Magazine, November 1952. Ava Gardner gets the cover, but I highly doubt she'll tell us everything!

I gotta say I was pretty impressed with myself for this! I've only ever made one dessert pie before, and I had never made meringue. I did everything from scratch, including the crust. It was insanely good!
BUT, I had to adapt the filling, which I would highly recommend. I couldn't get the 1952 Carnation cookbook version to thicken, no matter how much flour I added, and it was waaay too sweet. I found another recipe online that was very similar, but it had: 2 cups of milk, 1/4 cup of cornstarch, 1 cup of sugar, 3 egg yolks, and 1 tsp of salt. The butter and vanilla were the same.

These are all the Jello molds I made during Project 1952! They range from legitimately good to legitimately inedible.
Best Jello mold: The Raspberry Peach star-shaped mold (2nd row from the bottom, far left)
Worst Jello mold: It's a tie between the Salmon star-shaped one (third row from the bottom, far right), and the Creamy Pimento Ring (bottom left).

Radio-TV Mirror, October 1952. There's a pretty extensive article about Lucille, Desi, and the beginning of the second season of the show. It's a fluff piece, but it's still fun to read. Even Vivian Vance gets a couple of quotes, speaking of how she and Lucille hit it off immediately. The article also announces the news that Lucille and Desi are expecting their second child. (They aren't asked how the show would be handling it, though.)

I found this recipe for eggnog in the back of The Saturday Evening Post from December 1952. I'd never made eggnog before, and I was shocked at all the whipping cream in it. It's certainly not a health drink! I'm glad I cut the recipe in half, because even half a batch made 6 or 7 cups, and no one in the house will drink it except me because of all the eggs in it! It's pretty delicious, though, I have to say.

Motion Picture and Television Magazine, November 1952. I love Gloria Swanson for these ads. Most older women of this era never revealed their ages, especially in Hollywood. In this Jergens' ad campaign, Swanson wears it loud and proud. It even got updated as the year went on- the ads at the beginning of the year said she was 52, but they changed it when she turned 53. Legend.

Life magazine, July 28th, 1952. Now here's something I never expected to see- Gloria Swanson shilling for Pullman trains! Apparently she was also kind of publicizing her latest movie Three for Bedroom C, which took place on a train. With that title, I had to look it up, but I can't find it anywhere. :(

Look magazine, December 30th, 1952. Of course this is just a provocative title, and it assures American men that they're real George! (That's early 50's slang for awesome!) The back and forth between Gabor and Monroe is kind of cute and funny, although I highly doubt they actually wrote any of it.

This whole picture is kinda creepy. Swanson's expression and body language make her look just like Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard! "Come here, handsome young man... Can I show you my swimming pool?"

Motion Picture and Television Magazine, November 1952. Here's part of the cover story on Ava Gardner- it's supposedly her speaking "as told to Charles Samuels." I'm skeptical about how much of it is really her. She says something shocking right away, "I still cannot act. And I seriously doubt I'll ever become a truly fine screen performer. I've never cared enough about acting to put my whole heart into it. Acting bores me to death. I'm afraid it always will." !! And, oh my gosh, I always forget she was married to Mickey Rooney for a hot minute!

Day Two- TV and Radio
TV:
I Love Lucy, season 1, episode 13, “The Benefit.” Jan 7th
The Today Show, very first opening segment and weather report. Jan 14th.
Radio:
Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch, Jan 5th. “Twelfth Anniversary Show.”
The Big Show, episode 42, Jan 6th.
Tallulah Bankhead is one of my favorite humans. Brash, outrageous, and smart as a whip with an impressive collection of witticisms to her name. She was also brazenly open about her bisexuality throughout her career, spanning the 1920s-1950s.
She hosted The Big Show on NBC, a radio show meant to compete with the exploding growth of television. It was a lavish variety show overflowing with stars and music. At the start of the each show, she was accurately introduced as “the glamourous unpredictable, Tallulah Bankhead!” I heard once that some queer women of the day would gather and listen to the show together. I love imagining that!
Some of my favorite Tallulah quotes:
“My father warned me about men and booze, but he never said a word about women and cocaine!”
“I’m as pure as the driven slush.”
“I’ve tried several varieties of sex. The conventional position makes me claustrophobic, and the others either give me a stiff neck or lockjaw.” Legend.

I tried the Beef Pie recipe in the Carnation cookbook, and it really is delicious. (And I don't eat beef very often, because I've never really liked it!) I made the crust from scratch, and that was probably the best part- it may have been the best tasting crust I've ever eaten! The pie initially looked better than it does here- the inside boiled over a bit and swallowed up some of the pretty pinched edges.

Vintage Jello Mold number 9! This one wasn't weird or creamy or stomach churning- it's just raspberries and peaches in raspberry Jello. It tastes wonderful. My family even told me to make it again for Thanksgiving! (And I did NOT serve it with mayonnaise, btw. Shudder.)
