PRESS RELEASE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2019 RESPONSE TO: THE PREMIER'S ADDRESS TO THE NATION I am writing in response to the Premier’s Address to the nation in which the Premier chose to accuse me of trying to stop the resolution to the ATC strike. The Premier used the opportunity she has as leader of the country, addressing the nation on a matter of national importance to launch an astonishing personal attack on me. The foundation for this attack on me was only touched on briefly, but to quote “we were advised that the Honorable Josephine Connolly told the ATC strikers not to negotiate with government”. “We were advised” has a nice lawyerly ring to it - it seems to carry a certain import, a certainty, almost a fact. In truth what the Premier should have said was” somebody told me”, but that of course would have revealed the thin foundation of the personal attack on me that followed. So, let me be clear that whoever supposedly had whispered this in the Premier’s ear was reckless with the truth as it never happened. Had the Premier called me she would not have been misled in her thinking and would have been able to give the public an accurate account of what transpired. I think common courtesy and natural justice would require that I was at least asked if it was true before announcing to the country over national radio that I singlehandedly tried to wreck the nation’s economy. Hon. Josephine Connolly CONTRIBUTION ON APPROPRIATION BILL MAY, 1st 2019 The financial results for the year ending March 31 2019 with the Government carrying a net surplus of US$15m as reflected in the Budget Book and stated by the Hon Premier, ought to bring a smile and lift the spirits of every citizen and resident in this country. To those not physically present, such positive news would no doubt make them yearn to be a part of this utopia. And Mr. Speaker, with such significant increase in government revenues, one could be forgiven for assuming that the healthy state of the treasury has impacted the lives of our people in real and tangible ways. Sadly Mr. Speaker, this is not so. Mr Speaker, there is a school of thought that is described as classical economics; its most famous advocate was an 18 century economist named Adam Smith, who totally rejected the idea of government intervention in the economy. He proposed leaving everything to, as he famously described it, the invisible hand of the Market. It would appear Mr. Speaker that the Minister of Finance and the leader of government business subscribes to Adam Smith’ theory because despite sitting on a cache of real money, by default, the government has not demonstrated any ability in the last two and half years to direct, assist or stimulate the economy, rather it was left to the invisible hand of the market. Now Mr. Speaker, whether it was by accident, design or sheer lack of knowing, apart from rhetoric, for two and a half years, nothing has been done and that ‘Change’ that our people voted for remains invisible, an illusion. But Mr. Speaker, today the ‘Change’ has suddenly morphed into ‘Progressive Change CLICK ON THE LINK TO SEE FULL SEE MORE https://www.facebook.com/progressivepress/ https://www.instagram.com/p/B3VZYzWlNCI/?igshid=1ilcatnrlgkp2
