since it's a rather prevalent belief that keith pretty much only criticizes matthew in the press, here are some of the good things keith's said all throughout matthew's career that people seem to be unaware of because it's rarely posted:
“It was great. He’s such a great kid. He works hard and he loves the game of hockey,” Dad said after his son’s five-point performance.
June 2012
“He’s more skilled than I was,” Keith says. “These kids do stuff at a young age I couldn’t do as a pro. We’re happy with the decision (to play in London). I just wish I got a chance to see him more.”
January 2016
“He always likes to talk about it,” Keith said. “It’s funny when he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t like to call you. Knowing the game and knowing I probably had more bad games than he’ll ever have, I understand that part of the game. He’s trying to learn on his own, but he still loves to call and talk about the game and situations, so that’s pretty neat for me.”
December 2016
"He takes chances to make plays and can make those plays in tight spaces. His hockey sense, he had that from an early age. And he's always had that confidence. He's approaching things like a 28-year-old."
January 2017
“He watches hockey 24-7. He knows every player in the league. He wants to figure out every player in the league. He wants to know their tendencies. He’s a student of the game. That’s what I love about him.”
February 2018
“These boys deserve all the credit. They did all the work. It’s fun to see them have success,” he said. “It’s nice to be drafted high. But it’s what you do after that makes it count.”
June 2018
“I’m embarrassed to say this, but he probably knows a lot more than me right now when it comes to all that,” said Keith. “He’s a history buff. It’s unbelievable how much he knows. He just has that gift where he’s a hockey guy and the only thing that matters to him is hockey. He knows everything, I’m telling you. Plays. Players. Coaches. Drafts. Everything."
January 2019
“[Matthew’s] very mature beyond his years and that environment of being there will give him a leg up of not being nervous,” said Keith. “Whether he does some of the events or just being in the locker room with superstars, he’ll be fine. He’ll adjust pretty quickly. I think it showed the way they came into the league, the environment they were always put in. They’re not timid, yet they’re respectful in those instances.”
January 2020
“I’m proud of Matthew, he’s done a great job,” said Keith. "He’s showing his maturity. It’s fun to watch and right now him and his linemates have it going."
April 2022
"[Matthew] is the most generous kid I have ever met, what he did down in Florida (for the family all-star weekend) was incredible, everything, he took care of everything."
March 2023

I’m enjoying the chat that the PWHL is getting, and that NWSL has gotten, but at the same time I can’t help but compare it to the way the W is discussed, and why the difference? Is it because the WNBA has been around for longer and more continuously, so hasn’t had the reset that the other women’s leagues have had? Is it because soccer and hockey in other forms aren’t as popular as basketball? Is it because the players are predominantly black and masc and gay? Is it because it’s not wholly independent of the male pro league counterpart? Is my perception clouded because people online have irrational hatred of the W? Is it all of the above? It seriously would make for an interesting thesis or something. I’m happy that other women’s sports are having success but seeing the wnba be constantly shat upon is always going to be disheartening because I love watching it, not for any altruistic reason but because the play is intense and gritty. But trying to tell people about it falls on deaf ears
NWSL and PWHL have some kind of viral internet power that the WNBA doesn't have. I've been trying to figure out why for a very long time.
A lot of soccer fans told me it was the 2019 world cup that made NWSL viral. Megan Rapinoe was America's hero against the Trump supervillain.
Okay. Haven't WNBA players done a dozen things like that? Don't people remember the 2020 bubble season when the WNBA helped Democrats win power over the Senate? Don't people remember the name Brittney Griner? Where's our viral internet following? Why is there still 200 NWSL blogs for every 1 WNBA blog?
Trolls say the same things about our female basketball stars as they say about Megan Rapinoe. But this only seemed to strengthen Rapinoe's internet fanbase. It made her a hero. But when our basketball players get the same treatment from trolls, there's no corresponding army of fans.
I can understand why male trolls hate women's basketball. But I don't understand why women are indifferent about the WNBA.
The viral power of female obsessive internet fanbases is what holds up half the global entertainment industry. TV shows. The Swiftie phenomenon. NWSL. Even crusty twitch streamers and youtubers get love from tumblrinas. There are huge tumblr fandoms for that stuff. I think it's a big deal for any entertainment product to get that female obsessive internet fanbase power. And that buzz just doesn't exist for the WNBA. The internet fandom girls are apathetic about the WNBA.
Why? What feeds these fandoms? What is the WNBA missing? Is it really just too black and gay? Drag Race is black and gay and everyone loves it. Then people peek through the windows of the WNBA world but they don't come inside.

Women's hockey blew itself up last night.
The PHF has been bought out by the owners of the PWHPA. For better or worse, there will only be one pro women's hockey league in North America this upcoming season.
As a women's hockey fan and as a prospective sports agent, I wanted to share my thoughts on the matter. This post is unrebloggable because I don't want it spreading beyond my bubble. You can absolutely ask me follow-up questions over DM or through my ask box, though.
BACKGROUND
The PHF, formerly known as the NWHL, began operations in 2015. At the time, it was one of two major North American women's hockey leagues, the other being the CWHL. At the time, the NWHL was a big deal as the first league to actually pay its players a stipend, but it was not a livable wage. the CWHL collapsed overnight in 2019.
In response to this, over 200 pro women's hockey players formed the PWHPA, which is a players' association, not a league. The PWHPA's goal was ultimately to have a league that could commit to providing living wages for pro women's players. When their relationship with the PHF fractured, they decided to create a new league from the bottom up. This was slow-going.
Enter yesterday's news.
WHAT'S GOING ON?
Late last night, the owners of the PWHPA announced that they had purchased the PHF. Beginning in January 2024, there will be one league with six teams (3 in Canada and 3 in the United States). Each team will have 23 players. PWHPA players will take priority in tryouts.
MISCONCEPTIONS
Most of the controversy over this acquisition is overblown, or shows a lack of understanding over how pro sports work.
"This is a hostile takeover by the PWHPA!" The PHF had been financially insolvent for its entire tenure and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Its options were overnight dissolution like the CWHL or acquisition by another company.
"Two leagues are better for the sport." This is not true. The CWHL and NWHL routinely cannibalized one another when they were both in operation. Player leaders in both leagues have *always* had one unified North American league as their end goal.
"Hilary Knight and Marie-Philip Poulin are evil masterminds who wanted to devour this other league." PWHPA players were informed of the acquisition at the same time as everyone else. The only people who had a say in this happening were the owners of the respective organizations.
"Oh, so these Olympians get to swoop in and take all the credit at the end, not the people who built up the league?" Most of the senior leadership in the PWHPA were former CWHL or NWHL players who had horrible experiences in those leagues and had no intentions of being burned again.
"Oh, so PHF contracts all get voided but PWHPA ones don't?" Correct. This is how a union works. Your enemy is the ownership that promised six-figure, multi-year deals and couldn't deliver. Not the women who protected themselves.
"What have Knight/Nurse/etc. actually done to grow the game?" More than the PHF. I only know a handful of PHF players, most of whom are UW alumni and thus I know through mutual friends. Both Knight and Nurse have been commentators for ESPN, TNT, and other national sports stations. PWHPA members are at the NHL All-Star Game. Sarah Nurse was on the cover of a video game. Every league needs star talent. The PHF has never had that. (This is, of course, the part where I clarify that even the worst PHF athletes are probably better than your median NHL player.)
"Oh, so the Olympians automatically get a better deal in this?" Yes. This is how every sport works. Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper make more than Travis Jankowski and Brandon Marsh. When leagues and agents negotiate salaries, they care about stats, hardware, and name recognition. A 3-time Olympic gold medalist carries a lot more weight.
ACTUAL CONCERNS
Wow, the PHF really screwed its players over. Shortly before the acquisition, many players signed six-figure contracts for multiple years. They just left their families and bought houses near teams that no longer exist.
Contraction of the league. From a financial standpoint, there's no way this new league would be able to operate with a dozen teams. However, between the PHF and PWHPA, there are now 250-ish athletes fighting for 138 spots. This also doesn't take into consideration trainers, coaches, grounds crew, medical staff, and every other non-player who keeps the ship afloat.
So, about the WNBA... It's well-known that, because people don't care about women's sports, the WNBA is kept afloat by its tight financial relationship with the NBA. This isn't as much of an option in women's hockey, because the NHL sucks with money. Like, "the Arizona Coyotes got kicked out of their arena for not paying rent" sucks-with-money. There's not a clear-cut answer for how a WoHo league might become solvent when the respective male league is such a shitshow.
The PWHPA is shady too. In addition to having a noted transphobe on their board (not that the PHF is great with trans athletes -- see Digit Murphy), there's some concern about the association marketing itself as an official labor union when, per the Department of Labor, that's not actually true.
TAKEAWAYS
Most of the ire currently being directed at PWHPA athletes should be levied at the PHF ownership that let things get as bad as they did. The athletes that protected themselves with collective bargaining and who have gold medals to back up their skills are inherently in a better position than those who signed at-will contracts fresh out of college.
Ultimately, I do think that this move was a good one for women's hockey. Having one league helps when acquiring corporate sponsorships and other financial aid, but the NHL's incompetence is a continued problem here. On a human level, the people I feel worst for are the athletes who thought they had a guaranteed contract and are now being pushed out of the league.

Wheeling Nailers Sign Three New Players
Tumblr media
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce three more player signings for the 2022-23 season, bringing their total to 16. Wheeling has signed forward Griffin Lunn, as well as defensemen Dilan Peters and Zach Wilkie. Lunn, 24, is making the jump to the pro game, after finishing his four-year collegiate career at Colgate University. Griffin saw his production increase during all four of his seasons with the Raiders, and he punctuated that in 2021-22, as he finished third on the team with 12 goals, and tied for fifth with 19 points. For his career, the Lockport, New York native accumulated 20 goals, 23 assists, and 43 points in 121 games. Lunn was a member of the ECAC All-Academic Team all four years, and he was teammates with former Nailer Jared Cockrell during his first two seasons. Additionally, Griffin played junior hockey with Matthew Quercia and Davis Bunz. "Griffin is a player who had a breakout year as a senior at Colgate," said Nailers Head Coach Derek Army. "He is cut from the same cloth as Jared Cockrell - he can really skate, he plays physical, and he has a good shot. We are excited to see what he can do as a pro." Peters, 21, is coming off of a season of U Sports, as he attended Lakehead University in 2021-22. Dilan played a physical style for the Thunderwolves, as he amassed 65 penalty minutes in 12 games. Prior to that, the Sarnia, Ontario native played two seasons of junior hockey in the North American Hockey League with the Shreveport Mudbugs and St. Cloud Norsemen. Peters finished tied for eighth on the Mudbugs with a +13 rating during the 2019-20 season, and also ranked sixth with 82 penalty minutes. Dilan is one of the tallest players signed by the Nailers this summer at 6-foot-6. "Dilan is a big, physical defenseman, who skates well, and has a lot of rawness to his game," Army said. "We want to help him develop, as he has a lot of potential to help us this year and in the future." Wilkie, 25, is entering his second professional season, after winning a President's Cup Championship as a rookie with the SPHL's Peoria Rivermen. Zach tallied three goals, 24 assists, and 27 points in 50 regular season games with the Rivermen, then added five points in ten playoff contests. The Villa Park, Illinois native also brought plenty of physicality to Peoria, as he ranked fifth in the SPHL with 148 penalty minutes. Wilkie earned a pair of call-ups to the ECHL, as he skated in two games each with the Allen Americans and South Carolina Stingrays. Prior to turning pro, Zach played two seasons of U Sports Hockey at Laurentian University, as well as five seasons of junior hockey - four in the OHL and one in the OJHL. He was teammates with former Nailers Blake Siebenaler and Graham Knott, while playing for the Niagara IceDogs. "Zach is coming off of winning a championship in the SPHL, and he has a lot of qualities that we take pride in," said Army. "He plays hard, he isn't shy, and I was impressed with his mentality when I spoke with him about coming to Wheeling." The Wheeling Nailers will begin their 31st season on Saturday, October 22nd, when they host the Toledo Walleye at 7:10. Season memberships are available for the 2022-23 season by visiting wheelingnailers.com or calling (304) 234-GOAL. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article

NBA Trade Rumors: Ben Simmons Thinking About The Spurs, And Much More
토토사이트 concludes by taking a look at the existing issues faced because of the WBC organizers as the 2013 Timeless rapidly approaches. After months of looking through stats and game film and gathering information, I’ve identified five underappreciated prospects to look at for while the draft approaches. so do you have any worst/best case predictions about what's gonna happen with PWHPA or like where women's hockey as a whole is going in the near future?? and what's gonna happen to all those women who don't have teams anymore? can they even be compensated for that?
Best case scenario is that we reach a league like the WNBA: about a dozen teams, spread across North America, with televised games, a collective bargaining agreement, and all players on a livable wage with provided health care.
As an aside, if I were to pick 12 host cities, I would probably go with 8-and-4, with the four Canadian teams in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver, and the eight American teams in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. You definitely want teams in all the "Original Six" NHL cities, and the other cities I mentioned either have strong working relationships with the PWHPA and its members (Washington, Pittsburgh, Calgary) or are large hockey markets in their own right (Philly, Seattle, Vancouver).
The worst-case scenario is that this new league suffers the same fate as the CWHL. I cannot stress enough, to people who were not involved in the WoHo sphere in 2019, how sudden and devastating that league's collapse was. It existed one day, and the next, it didn't. I have some confidence that this won't happen because the PWHPA has collective bargaining power, so a more realistic scenario would be a further contraction of the league -- 4 teams, not connected with a host city.
As for the players... it's tough. It's the toughest part of this, on both a human and on a business level. About 100 players are going to get cut in total. It's probably worth mentioning, at this point, that while there's only one women's league in *North America,* there are pro women's leagues across Europe (the Swedish women's league is very popular in its own right), as well as one in Japan and a couple in Australia. Most of the European players who signed with the PHF will probably return to their local leagues.
As cruel as it sounds having all the PHF contracts voided, it's probably the nicest option in this scenario, because those contracts had non-compete clauses -- i.e. if the player's job was terminated, they couldn't turn around and sign in Europe. But since the contract was voided instead, that clause no longer applies.

His latest travel snafu wouldn’t even crack a top-10 list of memorable moments, good or bad, Emil Larmi experienced during his tornado of a calendar year.
At an age when many graduate from college, he was crowned a champion in Finland’s top pro league, wooed by NHL teams and left home for a foreign land.
In the U.S., he unexpectedly split the season between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Wheeling, faced a health scare that left him searching for answers and went through rough patches that had him questioning whether he belonged here.
...After getting passed over in the NHL draft, Larmi blossomed into a top goalie in Finland. Last spring, he led HPK to its first Liiga title in 13 years. He then decided to make the jump to North America, picking Pittsburgh as his landing spot.
The 6-foot goalie turned heads at prospect development camp with his lateral quickness and flair and had his moments during his first NHL training camp. But the plan all along was to get him a lot of action at the AHL level in 2019-20.
As is often the case for Europeans, the adjustment to North American hockey, where the ice surface is smaller and the action is faster and at times more chaotic, proved difficult. So was Larmi’s transition to life in the United States.
His hometown of Lahti is among Finland’s largest cities, and Finns learn English in school. But using it to navigate everyday tasks was a far greater test.
The first time he went to a grocery store, Larmi was there for more than three hours. Google Translate is not very helpful when decoding nutritional labels.
Trying to acquire wheels was also tricky. He felt more comfortable communicating with dealers via email. He was surprised to find it was a one-way street.
“No one was answering me,” he said. “I was like, ‘OK, don’t take my money.’ ”
After hilariously chronicling the ordeal on social media, Larmi found a dealer who helped him pick the right car. That was a big deal for Larmi, who calls himself “a car guy” and zips around in a Porsche Turbo 911 back home. But when it was time to complete the paperwork, Larmi approached another speed bump.
And that’s how he spent as much time at the DMV as he did in the crease.
“Every time they told us, ‘You need this paper,’ and we didn’t have it. We would go get it and come back the next day. And then they’d tell us, ‘Now you need this paper.’ I don’t know why she didn’t tell us we needed all of these papers,” Larmi said, letting out a hearty laugh. “Maybe she was just playing with us?”
There was also the time he went to the wrong airport while flying from New Hampshire to Pittsburgh. Thankfully, an Uber driver got him to the right one on time.
...Larmi earned his first AHL win Oct. 16, stopping 30 of 33 shots. But his season quickly went off the rails, largely due to circumstances out of his control.
Nine days later, in his next start, he headed to the home locker room at Mohegan Sun Arena for the second intermission. Two minutes before the Penguins were to step back out onto the ice, Larmi mouthed to Almari, “I feel a bit weird.”
Larmi said what happened next was like an out-of-body experience.
“I started to get shaky and started to pass out, but I never really passed out,” he said. “I was really close. I remember I was almost falling on the bench.”
Teammates huddled around him and hollered for help. While the medical staff attended to Larmi, the rest of the team had to go chase a puck around.
“Almari told me he didn’t know if I was going to die or what. He just had to leave me and go play some hockey,” Larmi said. “Yeah, it was scary for all of us.”
In the coming days, Larmi visited doctors, including a cardiologist, to get a handle on what happened. The belief is he took a knee to the head late in the second period, suffered a concussion and quickly began experiencing symptoms.
“That was the only explanation for what happened,” he said. “After a concussion, it’s always scary because you don’t know how long it’s going to take to recover. But I was lucky that it didn’t do too much and I was back on the ice soon.”
...Larmi has been back home in Finland for more than 10 weeks now. After a long, trying season in North America, he was happy to be around his family. The only problem, he joked, was discovering his parents had replaced him.
“We only had two dogs when I left for the States. When I came back, there was three,” he said, chuckling. “[Replacing me with a dog], I think that was cheaper. They don’t eat as much as I do. I don’t think they even missed me.”
“Of course, during those hard times there was a lot going on in my head. Like ‘I want to quit hockey. I hate my life.’ Stuff like that,” he said, letting out another big laugh. “But I still think there’s a lot of things I learned. It wasn’t just a waste of time to be there and I think those things can help me in the future.”
“I’m really excited to come back,” the goalie said. “I’m not happy about the last year. But I’m happy about what’s going to happen in the future.”
-Penguins prospect Emil Larmi's first year in US was up and down — literally and figuratively, 12 June 2020

Celebrate the Olympic Spirit
Sure, the Olympics aren’t a holiday, per se, but the every-four-year, or two if you count both Summer and Winter editions separately, massive international sporting events sure seems like a reason to celebrate, especially given their recent, unprecedented delay. And what better way to get into the Games mood, than by watching a sports movie?
Here are my favorite motivating, inspirational, and aspirational tales of athletic derring do…
Tumblr media
Favorite Sports Movies
The Cutting Edge (1992) - This figure skating romance was released around the 1992 Olympics, and actually name-checks that year's winter host city, Albertville, more than once.  It's not good in the traditional sense of great storytelling or athletic veracity, but I loved it so very much I saw it three times in the theater as a teen. Watching it at some point during every Winter Games is a tradition for me so, yeah, I can’t help it, I love this silly sports movie/romance, which also features a bit of holiday feels.
Wimbledon (2004) - It's a rom-com. It's a sports movie. It's a rom-com sports movie that really should be better known. Notting Hill but set at tennis' best-known event. Paul Bettany and Kristen Dunst have surprisingly great chemistry, and there's more sports-related tension than you'd think.
Friday Night Lights (2004) - A football movie for people who don't really like football. a.k.a. 🙋‍♀️. The TV series it spawned is also brilliant (”Clear Eyes, Full Hearts,” indeed), and well worth a watch, but the original movie, starring Billy Bob Thornton, is, honestly, a masterpiece. Definitely Peter Berg's best work and the original book, written by Berg's cousin, Buzz Bissinger, is a great read.
Muriel's Wedding (1994) - You mean you forgot this Australian export, which made Toni Collette a star, was a sports movie? Yep, one of my all-time favorite movies, of any genre, this absolutely brilliant, ABBA-soaked comedy is not only a girls-night go-to, but also a stealth Olympic sport classic.
Remember the Titans (2000) - OK, football isn't in the Olympics, but it sure does make for a good sports movie setting. Even if this early 1970s-set story is most definitely Disney-fied, Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Ryan Gosling and a baby Hayden Panettiere really sell this sort-of true story.
Invictus (2009)-Rugby isn't an Olympic sport, or even one most Americans know much about, but this Matt Damon-led, Clint Eastwood-directed, based-on-a-true-story tale made me care about a sport I'd only tangentially knew even existed before watching.
Hoosiers (1986)-I grew up in Indiana so, by law, I have to include this basketball classic on any "best of" sports movie lists. Also, it actually is really very good.
Rudy (1993)-Ditto the above. But, again, it's hard not to root for Sean Astin (and Jon Favreau!) in this love letter to the Fighting Irish. Plus, there’s no better scavenger hunt task or TikTok challenge than going into a bar and convincing a patron to allow you to put them on your shoulders and march around chanting, 'Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.'
Miracle (2004) - Given how much more popular the Summer Olympics are, it's weird that the Winter Games seem to get all the good movies made about them, but this Kurt Russell-led true tale is another Disney sports movie classic.
McFarland, USA (2015) - Disney, and Kevin Costner, just really know how to make a sports movie, damn it! This movie made me care about cross country for which it, too, could have carried the title Miracle.
A League of Their Own (1992)-The best baseball movie ever. Yeah, I said what I said. Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty—even Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell are making it work. 1992 was a weirdly great year for sports movies.
Moneyball (2011) - A movie about baseball, and math, and yet it's also great, I swear. In addition to all of the above, it's also a stealth Christmas movie and maybe Chris Pratt's best non-Marvel, movie role.
Creed (2015) - This surprisingly effective Rocky reboot starring Michael B Jordan as Apollo Creed's illegitimate son has spawned its own movie series which, in many ways, exceeds the original Rocky franchise.
Rocky Balboa (2006) - Maybe it's because I was a toddler when the original Rocky came out, so only saw the ever-worse sequels as a kid, but this mid-aughts return to the character for Sylvester Stallone, as both writer and actor, is a triumph.
Eddie the Eagle (2016) - That Hugh Jackman features in as many movies (spoiler alert) on this list as Kevin Costner surprised me, too. This story of the English ski jumper who became infamous for being, well, less than golden, is one of those non-Olympic triumph stories that really works. If you're going to watch one underdog-at-the-Games movie, I definitely prefer this this to the more ubiquitous Cool Runnings.
Love & Basketball (2000) - Only because I'm an anglophile is this great, chemistry-filled Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps college basketball romance not my favorite sports-movie-meets-rom-com.
I, Tonya (2017) - Margot Robbie and a nearly unrecognizable Sebastian Stan are perfectly cast in this sarcastic, highly stylized look at the Tonya Harding scandal.
Pride (2007) - Apparently I like this swimming movie, which I think almost no one saw, better than critics, but I found this 1970s-set, Terrence Howard-Bernie Mac-starring story of inner city kids excelling in the pool emotional and entertaining.
Field of Dreams (1989) - This Kevin Costner magical realism baseball classic is often goofy and imminently tease-worthy and yet…It also works. Maybe it's no surprise that someone who loves cheesy Christmas movies as much as I do would have a soft spot for Field of Dreams.
42 (2013) - Chadwick Boseman is absolutely fantastic as legend Jackie Robinson. One of those movies that's ostensibly about baseball, but is really about so much more, except not in a pretentious way.
Race (2016) - Before Jason Sudeikis was Ted Lasso, he was famed track coach Larry Synder in this Jesse Owens biopic that is far from perfect, but still important. Plus, I honestly don't think Stephan James got enough credit for his relatively nuanced portrayal of Owens.
Goon (2011) - This overlooked gem starring Sean William Scott as a semi-pro hockey player whose main skill is his ability to take, and dole out, a beating, is surprisingly great.
Real Steel (2011) - This is a robot-boxing movie starring Hugh Jackman that is basically Rocky meets Over the Top—and yet it's actually really good. Yeah, I was surprised, too.
Forget Paris (1995) - OK, so maybe Billy Crystal playing an NBA referee doesn't really make this a sports movie, but it does begin and end (spoiler alert) at real NBA games, and I will die on the hill that this rom-com co-starring Debra Winger is wildly under-rated.
Bend it like Beckham (2002) - This girl-power sports movie has some highly questionable romantic dynamics (the coach is their love interest???) but this Parminder Nagra-Keira Knightley movie is also a heckuva sports movie and an inspiring immigrant story.
Tumblr media
Bonus Pick: The Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso is one of the best things I watched in 2020, and I'm sure of that, because I watched it twice since, just to be sure. Jason Sudekis is absolutely perfect as an American college football coach taking over a UK Premier League team. This sweet show with a heart of gold is smart, funny, and absolutely impossible not to love—even for a cynic such as myself.
More Sports Movies Worth Watching
Tumblr media
For someone not very into sports, I am, apparently, into watching movies about sports, so while not a comprehensive listing of the entire, vast genre, here are a few more suggestions I personally think are worth watching.
The Miracle Season (2018) - This movie about high school volleyball champs whose star player dies suddenly stars Helen Hunt and is a lot better than you'd think based on its tiny budget and, honestly, fairly small story. Just missed making my Top 25.
The Way Back (2020) - This Ben Affleck as a drunken high school basketball coach movie is a lot better than expected. Released just as the pandemic kicked into high gear, it was overlooked last year, but worth seeking out.
Fighting with My Family (2019) - Does it count if it's a show, not a sport? Either way (but that's why this isn't in my Top 25), this stealth Christmas movie/love letter to the WWE is a lot better than it ever needed to be thanks to some really great performances from Florence Pugh, Lena Headey and directer Stephen Merchant. Even The Rock reins it in.
Warrior (2011) - You couldn't pay me to watch an actual UFC bout, but this Tom Hardy story of (literally) battling brothers is incredibly compelling and well done.
Win Win (2011) - This movie isn't really enough about wrestling, even though its ostensibly centered around the sport, to make it into my Top 25, but it's still really good, and Amy Ryan gives an outstanding performance.
Fever Pitch (2005) - Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon star in this remake of a UK film whose ending they had to shift when the Red Sox unexpectedly won the World Series.
Fever Pitch (1997) - This Colin Firth-starring, Arsenal-centered original is much smaller, more realistic and arguably better than the big budget Barrymore-Fallon redux.
We are Marshall (2006) - A real-life sports tragedy made into a sports-movie tearjerker starring Matthew McConaughy. And my tears were very much jerked by the end.
Coach Carter (2005) - Samuel L Jackson plays real-life basketball coach Ken Carter and, because it's a Disney movie, doesn't use the F-word even once. Now that's a feat worthy of its own sports movie.
Invincible (2006) - Yes, it's Mark Wahlberg, and another based-on-a-true-story, Disney sports movie that hits all the cliches, but dang it, that works on me. It just does.
Glory Road (2006) - If you're sensing a theme with me and Disney sports movies…Well, you're not wrong. This look at the first all-Black starting lineup at the 1966 NCAA Final Four does, unfortunately, center white coach Don Haskins, played by Josh Lucas (though I always mis-remember it as Josh Charles), making the important story it tells less than what it should be, but it still mostly works.
Million Dollar Arm (2014) - Admittedly one of the lesser Disney sports movie entries, and another that centers a white guy in a film mostly about people of color (not a great look), this Jon Hamm movie about a scout seeking an Indian cricket star who can make it in the Major Leagues still mostly worked for me.
The Mighty Ducks (1992) - One of the few movies on this list aimed directly at kids, this beloved peewee hockey saga actually is cute, and mostly does hold up.
Cool Runnings (1993) - Kind of shocked this movie that is part White Savior-movie and part-wacky kids movie essentially making fun of a real group of athletes of color came out in 1993 and not 1973, but the earnest charm of John Candy and a general Disney gloss keep this from being totally unwatchable and mostly just mildly, rather than extremely, offensive. Not really recommending, but feels like it belongs on an Olympic movie list.
Nadia (1984) - This made-for-TV, mostly true biopic, starring Talia Balsam as Nadia Comaneci, was a Disney Channel staple in that network’s early days.
Munich (2005) - It's a movie with the Olympics very much at its heart—namely the 1972 Israeli athlete hostage tragedy—that isn't really about the Olympics at all, but this Steven Spielberg-directed movie about national revenge is compelling, if problematic if you think about it for too long.
American Anthem (1986) - Is this Mitch Gaylord-Mrs. Wayne Gretzky (a.k.a Janet Jones) starring movie good, realistic and/or well-written? No, no and none of the above. But did I still watch it 8,000 times as a kid on HBO? Yes. Yes, I did.
Men with Brooms (2002) - Once, on a business trip to Canada, my husband was stuck in a hotel that only got three channels, and one of them always seemed to be showing curling, which actually got him weirdly into this obscure sport. This movie wasn't quite as fun as I hoped, but it's still a mostly charming, if slight, Canadian classic.
Unbroken (2014) - The harrowing and incredible real-life story of Louis Zamperini deserved better than this Angelina Jolie-directed movie delivered, but it's still a serviceable version of a worthy tale.
Chariots of Fire (1981) - I remember being bored out of my mind by this movie trying to watch this movie on cable as a kid, but no denying that, if nothing else, the score is iconic and indelibly linked to sports-movie magic.
Without Limits (1998) - Jared Leto’s Prefontaine beat this one to the theaters, but this Billy Crudup-starring film is the better of the two movies about the life of running pioneer Steve Prefontaine. There’s also a 1995 documentary, Fire on the Track: The Steve Prefontaine Story.
Personal Best (1982) - Mariel Hemingway’s story of ambition at odds with love, is a sports and LGTBQ+ classic.
Olympic Dreams (2019) - The story of how this small, meandering movie was made during the 2018 Winter Games is, unfortunately, more interesting than the movie itself, but there is some charm in watching Nick Kroll as an Olympic dentist making his way through the real Village, while interacting with real athletes.
Foxcatcher (2015) - This excellently-acted story is more true crime than sports inspiration, but if you're seeking a look at the dark side of the Games—and don’t want to turn on a doc like Athlete A—this is very dark tale indeed.
Seabiscuit (2003) - Every great athlete deserves to have their story told.
Any Given Sunday (1999) - Oliver Stone and Al Pacino take on pro Football. 'Nuff said.
The Replacements (2000) - I mean, the movie isn't amazing, but Keanu Reeves is super charming and Gene Hackman is always worth a watch.
The Program (1993) - Another bit of a dark-side-of-football take, worth it if only for the fantastic cast: James Caan, Halle Berry, Omar Eps, Joey Lauren Adams.
Everbody’s All-American (1988) - Not a movie I particularly love, but this Dennis Quaid-Jessica Lange football story that spans decades has always stuck in my memory.
Bull Durham (1988) - Just let Kevin Costner play actual baseball already.
