Mathilde-Laetitia-Wilhelmine Bonaparte, Princess Demidoff and de San Donato, known as Princess Mathilde (1861). Edouard Louis Dubufe (French, 1819-1883). Oil on canvas. Château de Versailles.
Dubufe has chosen a very classic layout in a palatial setting. The princess is in a large court dress - a white silk dress trimmed with gold lace and a train of red velvet embroidered with gold - and adorned with a necklace with seven rows of pearls and a matching tiara. The decor evokes the architecture of the Tuileries Palace, with its richly carved Mannerist-style columns, here bearing the double crowned monogram of the princess and her dynasty.
