Usually I will record an excerpt of a piece multiple times and chose the one I like most to post. This time, I’m posting the first recording I made so I can identify any problems in my playing and fix them for the next time. My teacher isn’t the biggest fan of slow practice. She encourages me to practice the piece at its normal tempo. That way, I’ll be able to identify any problems and fix them right away. After watching the video, I can already say that my shifts in section B are very lazy. I was not engaging my whole arm. If I were to have practiced that slowly, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that. I also noticed some intonation issues at the beginning. Each triplet can be played as double stops so I’m first going to play them like that so I have the right hand frame and know where my fingers need to be. When I feel I’m ready, then I will play it how the piece calls for it to be played. I’ll probably post how I practice it on my stories later tonight. Also my upbow spiccato notes are not as powerful as the downbow so I’m going to spend some time on that. With its 5 #strings #stringcrossings on #violoncellodaspalla are challenging. I use #etude no 7 by #kreutzer for practice. Here’s what I do (3 videos): 1) End each note on the next note, then wait before playing it. This ensures both the left hand finger and the bow hair are prepared in advance of each note. ~swipe left~ 2) Repeat each note. This creates more time to prepare each string crossing in the mind while reducing the amount of time given to the actual change of strings. Use the time offered by the repetition to plan each string crossing. Accomplish each change of strings quickly and with a smooth natural motion. Hiiiiiii pals! I've been squirreling away at practise the last week or two, but moving back home for Christmas and grappling with my new phone left me not making any recordings for a while. It does mean, however, I can now present you some rather wonderful progress! I purchased this piece just a few days ago and started working on it on Sunday (I only started trying the last two pages, as heard in the second clip, yesterday!) The piece is Gate by Graham Fitkin, and let me tell you I'm low-key obsessed! Upon first listening I was super intimidated and thought I genuinely wouldn't be able to hack it, but after just a few days work I've made quite some marvellous progress!! I was playing to a Spotify recording here to see if I could keep up with the original tempo, and although there are certainly many details yet to sort, I'm pretty proud of the progress 😌 I just hope I'll be able to perform this with a live pianist when my final recital rolls around, cause the piano part is very confusing 🥵

Intonation, contact point, bow weigh & bow speed. We usually think of intonation as being in the realm of the left hand fingers; however, an excess of bow weight or pressure can bend the strings out of tune even if the left hand fingers are accurately placed. Consider the following: 1) Strings get softer further from the bridge and therefore cannot accept as much weight before the pitch bends. 2) Thinner (higher) strings can accept less weight at the same distance from the bridge as thicker (lower strings) 3) Shorter strings (higher positions) can accept less weight than longer strings (lower positions) at the same distance from the bridge. Double stops are notorious for being out of tune. I always check my bow placement so I can tell if the issue is in the left hand or the right. 3 videos from last night’s practice of #gigue from #cellosuite no 6 by #jsbach 1) Slow slurred staccato (separate notes while preserving bow direction). I carefully monitor my bow placement so it is as close to the bridge as possible taking advantage of the string’s stiffness and strength. ~~swipe left~~ 2) Slow practice with performance bowings taking care not to let the bow slip into the softer, weaker part of the strings. Here’s a fun metronome drill to develop a strong sense of pulse as well as musical freedom and insights into phrasing! Swipe left for each stage! I begin the practice with many clicks per measure. Rhythm from note to note is strict. For each stage, I reduce the number of clicks and increase the tempo slightly. Using progressively fewer clicks gradually transfers the rhythmic responsibility from the metronome to me! By the time I get to the fewest number of clicks, I’m in a stage of intense but relaxed concentration — almost zen!The rhythm is accurate but not “beat-y” or “metronomic”. I become aware of the strong and weak beats and learn where I may want to emphasize and deemphasize beats to support long flowing phrases. In faster movements, depending on the meter, I may end up with clicks every other measure. Drop-out notes are notes which tend to sound shorter or quieter than the notes around them. Notes at risk of dropping out are notes before or after changes of bow, position or string. In these examples notes are slurred across the strings. The middle notes of the slurs occur both before and after changes of string and are therefore at high risk for dropping out. Examples: 1) Preludio From Partita no 3 by #jsbach Elongating the second note of the slurs clarifies this note and encourages a slow, heavy bow on the slurs. 2) Viola concerto by Bela Bartok The bow slurs across all 4 strings creating 2 middle or potential drop-out notes.
