Almaden Avenue Murals and a Pocket Dog Park
Almaden Avenue Murals and a Pocket Dog Park
Yesterday I discovered some new-to-me murals and a pocket dog park within one block of West Santa Clara Street between Almaden Avenue and San Pedro Street. I went into the dog park to take a picture of the mural and while there I made friends with Lucy the dog.

GROSS / HOLMES BUILDING, SAN JOSE
by Ricky Watts
San Francisco born Ricky Watts says art was something inside him before he even knew what art was. In 8th grade Watts discovered graffiti and became obsessed with both the rebellious side and the challenge of seeing how creative he could make something in a short amount of time. After art school Watts says he spent about 10 years at a computer before returning to his roots and focusing on drawing and painting. Watts' illustration work often involves very detailed realism, but where his murals were once more letter-based he's evolved a very colorful abstract style with with his spray paint work. When Pow!Wow! launched its first @PowWowSanJose in 2017 Watts traveled a couple of hours south from his home in Sebastapol and painted this landmark mural on the side of one of San Jose’s oldest commercial properties, the troubled Gross / Holmes Building on N 1st St.  @rickywatts/

Now in it’s second year, Pow!Wow!Worldwide! was taking over the blank canvas walls of San Jose. Unlike Chichai and Chris, I wasn’t able to fly out to Hawaii and attend festivities out there, so I was stoked to try and get involved in what is only just developing in San Jose.

From Pow! Wow! San Jose! inaugural commencement 2017
One of my bucket list items for the Empire Pop –Up was to host a run, and make it a local hub for a San Jose Run Club. All levels welcome. Upon planning this event, I noticed JT Service  was just beginning a local run series, @Run_Local, and I thought it’d be so fun to collaborate with him. Why not take my chances to reach out and make our first run inline with PWSJ?
JT Service is the Founder of Soul Focus Sports and the Represent Running Series. You might be familiar with his Run The Bay series which includes San Jose 408k “Race to the Row” – The Across the Bay 12k & 415k – The East Bay 510k – The Silicon Valley Half, 10k, & Food Truck 5k. You know, no big deal.
To our luck, JT agreed and together we hosted Miles of Murals II  in which we invited the community to come run with us in downtown San Jose to check out live mural work.

Runners started trickling into the shop. We briefed everyone about the route, and although both JT and I didn’t precisely know where these murals were, we knew this would turn into a scavenger hunt that the group of runners were totally down with.

Today is the last day of @powwowsanjose! This time, I want to share my gratitude toward the restaurant, #DacPhuc, that I painted the wall. The lady on the pic is Monique, the owner of the restaurant. Her brother Don and she took care of me so much while I was painting. When I started to paint, we were kinda awkward. They were not familiar with the public art and I didn’t have good words to tell (well, it’s my first mural!). But after 2-3days, once they saw many colors and bubbly shapes, they started to take care of me, giving me a banana and water. Around the 5th day, they treated me as a family, serving me yummy Vietnamese food, asking my health and progress with big smiles...!! When I finished painting it, we hugged each other very tightly. I re-learned the power of art through this mural. They have been here since 35 years and I believe it’s one of the prides of history in San Jose. I talked with so many people who have come to eat there more than 10 years, and who never went there, or even didn’t notice that there is a Vietnamese restaurant until I started to paint. If you like Vietnamese food and you never try this place, please come to try! They are really nice people and I want them to continue their business as long as possible. This was a life changing experience. Thank you so much for letting me paint this mural!!!—- POW! WOW! POW! - It's the impact that art has on a person. WOW! - It's reaction that art has on a viewer. Together they form POW WOW, which is a Native American term that describes a gathering that celebrates culture, music and art. Centered around a week-long event in Hawaii, POW! Reposting this from the Pow! Wow! website:
POW! WOW! HAWAII IS A GATHERING OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS THAT ENGAGES WITH THE BROADER COMMUNITY IN THE PROCESS AND CREATION OF ART.
Supported by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, POW! WOW! has grown into a global network of artists and organizes gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, a large creative space named Lana Lane Studios, concerts, and live art installations across the globe. The Hawaii event takes place during Valentine’s Day week in February in the Kaka’ako district of Honolulu, and brings over a hundred international and local artists together to create murals and other forms of art.
After touring the globe and beautifying the streets of ten different cities, contemporary art initiative POW! WOW! takes to its hometown in Oahu, Hawaii for its 2018 festivities. Taking place between February 10th and the 18th, artists and musicians will gather at the Kaka’ako neighborhood and create all new murals and installations. The festival is fleshed out with a block party alongside the Honolulu Night Market, an exhibition curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art, a print show with Detroit-based 1xRun, artist talks, screenings, foot golf tournaments with Kicks to the Pitch and Paradise Soccer Club, break dancing battles with UDEF, as well as concert with BAMP.
In 2017, the festival was held in the following cities: Honolulu, Hawaii; Washington D.C.; Israel; Long Beach, California; Worcester, Massachusetts; Guam; Seoul, South Korea; San Jose, California; Kobe, Japan; and Taipei, Taiwan.

Spenser Little’s “Illumination Devices.”
Currently on view at MOAH Cedar in Los Angeles, California and in collaboration with Thinkspace Projects is artist Spenser Little’s solo exhibition, “Illumination Devices.”
Spenser Little is a self-taught artist who has been bending wire and carving wood for almost 20 years, allowing his creativity to morph into images that range from simple wordplay to complex portraits. He has related his wire work to a mixture of playing chess and illustration, as the problem-solving component of the work is what continues to inspire himself to create larger and more complex pieces. Some works contain moving components and multiple wires, but mostly the pieces are formed from one continuous piece of wire that is bent and molded to Little’s will. He has left the wire sculptures all over the world, in locations that range from the Eiffel Tower to the bottom of caves, their location selected with little discernment, only for the piece to be finally realized at the moment that someone discovers the surprise piece of art.
Little has taken part in numerous POW! WOW! mural festivals in the past few years, which has exposed his work to an entire new audience via their network of art sites/blogs and having his work shared all over the world including the likes of the Antelope Valley (Lancaster, California) / Long Beach, California / Rotterdam, The Netherlands / Honolulu, Hawaii / Israel / and San Jose.
Regarding his new body of work, Spenser shares “To me, all art is a form of illumination devices. For this exhibition I have built a new series of mixed-media kinetic lamps. The lamps serve as bright facades for inner, hidden chambers. Looking through their constantly closing and opening doors, viewers are offered a peak at what makes them tick. Like the different layers we develop throughout our lives, we only allow certain people to see our most inner workings, while the majority are only able to see our polished exteriors. The lamp building process begins with the wood carving of the central character’s head. I then weld a round bar frame for the outline of the body. I don’t put much forethought into where the design will go, aesthetic or engineering wise, which allows me to adapt any spontaneous idea during the build. Once I have the legs and body welded out and sized to the wooden head, I begin to problem shoot the kinetic portion of the build. Which is the unnatural part for my purely sculptor’s brain. Once all of the kinetic components are complete, I clean and bake the paper skin on the lamp, allowing them to come to life.”
