BGYO: Aces of P-pop
Who is BGYO?
BGYO is a five-member P-Pop boy group under ABS-CBN’s Star Magic consisting of Akira, JL, Mikki, Gelo, and Nate. The group’s name is not a shortened version of the Tagalog word "bagyo" which means storm or a tropical cyclone. BGYO is an acronym for "Becoming the Change, Going Further, You and I, Originally Filipino."
During their pre-debut, BGYO is also referred to as SHA Boys or Star Hunt Academy Boys. They trained for more than two years with Korean coaches before debuting on January 30, 2021, with their single "The Light." The members themselves wrote the Filipino lyrics to reflect their experiences in training.

BGYO Members Profile
Angelo Troy Rivera, also known as Gelo, is the leader of BGYO. He was born on April 18, 2001. He was competing with his dance team, called A-Team, in the Philippines and other countries before making his debut as an idol.
Akira Morishita is the lead vocalist of BGYO. He was born on April 27, 2001. He is an Indie Filipino Actor in the Philippines and is known for starring in Sundalong Kanin (2014), Alienasyon (2014), All of Me (2015), and ‘Tol (2019). He recently co-starred with Francine Diaz in the teen comedy miniseries Bola-Bola. Also, he has appeared in a few commercials.
John Lloyd Toreliza, also known as JL, is the main vocalist of BGYO. He was born on September 17, 2001. In 2018, he joined "The Clash," a singing competition that aired on national television and had Regine Velasquez-Alcasid as one of the judges. He did not make it to the finals, unfortunately.
Michael Claver Jr., also known as Mikki, is the main rapper of BGYO. He was born on February 13, 2002. He was the last person to audition for Star Hunt Academy to get a scholarship.
Nathaniel Porcalla, also known as Nate, is the main dancer and the youngest of BGYO. He was born on June 06, 2003. He competed in World of Dance Philippines in 2019, but he did not advance to the finals.
Accomplishments of BGYO
BGYO has taken the world by storm since making its debut in 2021. They are renowned for notable vocals, synchronized dance moves, commanding stage presence, and undeniable visuals. With that, the group is regarded as "P-Pop's Breakout Act of 2021" and has earned their so-called "Aces of P-Pop" in just a year.
In the first two years of their career, BGYO released thirteen singles, seven B-sides, nine soundtrack singles, two promotional singles, two remix singles, and eleven music videos. In addition, they have been holding concerts both locally and globally, making them the proud flag bearers of P-pop worldwide. The group was featured by Privé Alliance, an upscale streetwear line that lists Baekhyun, a Korean singer, as its co-creative director. They have also been nominated for and won several awards locally and internationally. The members keep their feet on the ground despite the achievements they have been receiving. They always honor their ACEs, or their fans, for their unending love and support since the beginning.
BGYO continues to dominate the world, representing P-pop on the scene.
Why did I choose this topic for my blog?
I chose this topic to feature BGYO. What their background is, how they overcame challenges, and who are the persons behind the title, "Aces of P-Pop?" I have been their fan since before their debut. I saw how much effort and time they invested in their preparation for their performances. They almost couldn't debut because of the ABS-CBN shutdown. But thankfully, the management didn’t disappoint them.
P-pop groups used to be made fun of because people thought they were copying K-pop. This is why many groups have disbanded. Nevertheless, the biggest thanks go to highly trained Filipino talents like SB19, who revived P-pop on the mainstream scene. Upon BGYO's debut, P-pop and other P-pop groups like BINI, Alamat, and VXON get more opportunities to gain international recognition. They prove that P-pop is Filipino pop music rather than a K-pop copycat. Therefore, P-pop—the embarrassing subgenre of OPM or Original Pilipino Music we previously knew—became an instant sensation, the reason why new P-pop groups are constantly making their debut nowadays.
Many people have found reason in BGYO, especially the ACEs. Akira frequently reminds the fans to treat themselves with the same love that they give to their members. Hopefully, with the help of this blog, I can make you understand the journey of BGYO. Remember that you can become whoever you want to be.

Meng, every toy store would have that glass case display with the great big house with the smol furniture and the different animal families lined up and doing their own do-s. I was hella crazy over going toy store to toy store and seeing how they would display their houses and all. (sadly, I never bought a pack of my own, so I would just get excited over mall displays. #SadLyf HAHAHAHA)
they are absolutely crazyadorable!!!! I got so overwhelmed and nostalgic upon having to search for these photos!! The craze is back on!! I mean, L O O K ! ! ! They’d have the cutest tiny furniture and different accessories and all!! and the clothes o. em!! I remember wanting to own that great big house along with the family van and decorate the entire thing!! I wanted to have a BBQ racoon dad watching over his twin boys by the pool with the mom wearing a cute apron by the kitchen --- you know, that entire picturesque family.
And that is where I’ve realized the faults into this collection’s branding. One of the reasons why I never really bought a Sylvanian family was because they were crazy impractically expensive!! I mean, ur 700 pesos could only buy you a family. That’s 35 cornettos meng!! Thankfully, already clothed and all, some packs generously have an accessory or two along with it but that’s it. And what’s in this set? So it’s your animal family of choice inclusive of a mom, a dad, and 2 kids. Usually a brother and a sister. How ideal, right? Well looking at it all now, it’s quite bothersome how we’ve had this influence of how families are supposed to be like at such a young age. (and as animals too? Yet another unrealistic expectation jk)
But ok. here’s the thing on why it’s all so iffy:
Gender roles pa more??!! Mom in an apron, sister in pink, brother in blue. Same goes for their accessories too. Not that it’s such an uncommon thing to expect from children’s toys but you understand why it’s so wrong. We’re brainwashing colors and expectations into children’s minds through dolls. It’s crazy!!!
Sylvanian families are supposed to portray the picture of an ideal family, and I guess that’s why every family set comes with 2 parents -- a mom and a dad. wow. Idk I just generally hate the lack of representation and diversity in things. Family’s a really sensitive topic for children who can’t have lifestyles as promising as the ones of these. I mean heck, the most diversity a set can get is having triplets. wowee. Sure maybe toy companies might (& sadly) never give in to having LGBT representation but would it kill to have a single parent with maybe like 5 children?
Life isn’t a picnic. lol. I mean, I really don’t want to be that cynical kid who grew up to face the bitterness of life but it’s these sort of things that make life even a greater let down, ykno? I mean, sori kids but there are realities beyond the adorable packagings and cute house decor. It’s just quite sad to have this happy expectations built up for them at such an early age because tbh this is really the kind of picture kids look up to when growing up.
Well, anyways. Rant over. I’m still forever looking forward to finally owning my own collection someday, but hopefully when the time does come, it’s gonna be one more realistically aligned with life. (even if it has to sacrifice the cute)

"Before I beecome a member of BGYO, I focuseed on being a hiphop and ballroom dancer. I used to compete locally and internationally. Ever since I was young, my dream is to be a performer and l really love music. Through BGYO, I founda way to nurture my skills to become an all round artist and inspire a lot of people.
The most memorable experience for me during the selecting of members was the Korean training evaluation. We were trained by Korean and Filipino coacches and all eyes were on us. It felt good to have a healthy competitive environment where all of us would push hard to become better and prove that we were deserving to be in the final roster. There were a lot of breakdowns, stress, and pressure but we didn't forget to enjoy the moment as brothers. That made us stronger because we were together through ups and downs."

Kalagayan ng Internet sa Pilipinas
Ang internet ay isang instrumento na sumasakop sa halos lahat ng aspeto ng buhay ng Pilipino. Ito’y ginagamit sa edukasyon, sining, negosyo, agham, komunikasyon, paglilibang, at sa iba pang larangan. Ngunit hindi maipagkakaila na ang internet sa Pilipinas ay makupad at mahina ang abot. Mababasa sa isang pahayag ng Philstar na nahuhuli ang Pilipinas sa iba nitong mga karatig-bansa sa Timog Silangang Asya (Porcalla, 2018).
Malaki din ang papel ng internet sa pagnenegosyo. Sa ilan, ito ang mismong negosyo na kanilang ginagawa tulad ng mga online na tindahan. Sa ibang mga negosyo naman, nagagamit ang internet sa ibang paraan tulad ng advertisements o ibang mga karatula na makikitang nakapaskil sa ibat ibang mga websites. Malaki ang ginagampanang papel ng internet sa buhay ng Pilipino. Hindi rin lamang sa negosyo nagagamit ng mga Pilipino ang internet, naipapasok din ito sa ibang aspeto ng buhay ng Pilipino. Ang instant messaging ay isang malaking tulong sa komunikasyon sa araw-araw na buhay ng Pilipino. Inilahad ni Delon Porcalla (2018), na mayroong 67 milyong katao na gumagamit ng internet sa ating bansa. At ayon sa ulat ng Digital 2018, sinasabing ang mga Pilipino ay gumagastos ng average na tatlong oras at limampu’t pitong minuto sa isang araw sa social media na pinangungunahan ng Facebook (Camus, 2018). Karamihan sa mga Pilipino, Lalo na ang mga OFW, ay gumagamit ng internet para sa komunikasyon ng kanilang mga kaibigan at pamilya.
May mga iba’t ibang ISP or Internet Service Provider sa Pilipinas, ngunit hindi sapat ang mga ISP na ito upang maasikaso ang milyon-milyong gumagamit ng kanilang serbisyo sa Pilipinas. At dahil hindi sapat ang dami ng mga ISP, nagkaroon ng pagmomonopolyo sa internet connection na nagreresulta sa pilit na pagbayad ng mas mahal ang mga mamimili para sa internet connection. Maikukumpara sa Hongkong at sa Australya, na mas mura at mas mabilis na internet ang binabayaran nila kesa sa Pilipinas na umaabot ng 25$ hangang 70$. Mas mahal ang sinisingil ng mga ISP ng Pilipinas para sa subscription ng internet connection. Dahil sa kakulangan sa kompetisyon, hindi nailelebel ng tama ang presyo ng internet connection sa Pilipinas.
Ngunit hindi lamang presyo ang isyu ng Pilipino sa kalagayan ng internet sa bansa. Kadalasan ang inirereklamo ng mga mamimili ng mga ISP sa Pilipinas ay ang ang pagkakaiba ng inadvertise na speed kesa sa aktwal na bilis ng internet. Ipinresenta ni Mary Grace Santos isang research fellow sa LIRNEasia sa senado na mas mabagal ang aktwal na bilis ng internet kesa sa bilis na inaadvertise ng mga ISP sa Pilipinas. isinaad sa pinresenta ni Santos na 80 % na mas mabagal ang advertised speed kesa sa aktwal na bilis ng internet na ibinibigay ng ISP sa Pilipinas, at mula sa pag-aaral noong 2011, ang pinakamataas na average internet speed na naabot ay 26.65% lamang ng advertised speed ng ISP. Ayon sa ABS-CBN News (2017), ang pamantayang bilis ng download sa mobile ay umabot sa 11.95 mbps na dati ay 11.95 mbps at pinataas ang ranggo ng bilis sa 94th na dati ay 99ths ayon sa Speedtest by Ookla.
Upang masolusyonan ang isyu sa internet, iniulat ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte sa kanyang SONA noong Hulyo 2016 na para makamtam ang mas mabilis at mas murang pampublikong internet, siya ay bumuo kasama ng DICT ng National Broadband Plan o NBP kung saan gagamitin ng fiber optic cables para paunladin ang internet speed sa bansa. Ayon sa Saligang Batas 10844, ang DICT ay ang pangunahing namamahala ng mga proyekto ng National Broadband Policy para mapabilis ang internet speed at mas mabilis ang daan sa pag-iimplementa nito sa publiko. Ang NBP naman ay naghahanap ng paraan para makapgtayo ng mas maraming mga imprastraktura at sa pag ayos ng mga regulasyon para paunladin ang internet connectivity sa Pilipinas. Plano din ng gobyerno na mag akit ng mga foreign internet service provider na pumunta sa ating bansa at magnegosyo, upang maasikaso ang milyon-milyong Pilipinong gumagamit ng internet. Ang Pilipinas ay pang 74 sa 77 na mga bansang sinuri pagdating sa bilis ng 4g connectivity ayon sa Opensignal, Samantalang pang 12 naman ang Pilipinas sa buong mundo pagdating sa bilang ng mga tao na gumagamit ng internet na inilahad ni Delon Porcalla. Ang pagpasok ng mga dayuhang ISP sa Pilipinas ay may naitutulong sa pagpapalago hindi lamang ng ating internet speed kundi pati na din sa ekonomiya. Ngunit sa kabila ng kakuparan ng internet sa Pilipinas, unti-unti itong umuunlad. Mula sa 3.5 mbps noong 2014, ito na ngayon ay umaabot sa 17.62 mbps.
May isang kaugalian tayong mga Pilipino na hindi mabuti at iyan ay magwalang-bahala sa mga bagay bagay. “Bahala na!” Iyan ang mga salitang naririnig natin sa mga taong pumapasok sa alanganing relasyon, sa mga taong patuloy na nagtatapon ng pera sa pamimili ng mamahaling gamit o sa kanilang layaw o sa pagsusugal kahit ubos na pati mga naipong pera. Ang kasabihang “bahala na” ay naging parte na ng mga Pilipino at hindi ito magandang ugali. Hinahayaan natin ang mga bagay na kailangan baguhin kaya tayo ay di nakakagawa ng mabuti. Hirap na hirap na din ang mga ISP sa pag-ayos ng internet connection dahil sa mga pangangailangan natin. Dahil sa kanilang kakulangan sa dedikasyon sa pag-ayos ng kanilang serbisyo halos buong Pilipinas din ay nakakatanggap ng mahinang internet, kasama din dito ang “bahala na” na kultura ng mga Pilipino. Pati ang mga malalaking ISP ay nadadamay na sa ganito kultura. Hindi man ito pangangailangan kasi kaya ng isang tao mabuhay kahit na ito ay wala, babad ang mga Pilipino sa internet at ito ay nagiging parte ng kanilang buhay. Ginagamit ng mga Pilipino ang internet dahil ito din ay ang rason kung paano nakikipagusap sa pamilya na nasa ibang bansa o mga kaibigan. Kasama din dito ang konsepto ng pamilya, pakikisama, at pakikipagkapwa sa kultura ng Pilipino at isa din ito sa sanhi kung bakit dumedepende ang maraming Pilipino sa internet upang maging konektado sa mga mahal sa buhay ng lahat ng oras. Ang mga Pilipino ay may pagka-ugali na tinatawag na "family oriented," at dahil sa internet sila ay nakikipagkomunika sa kanilang mga kamag-anak. 67 milyong katao ang may “access” sa internet sa Pilipinas at isa din tayo sa pinakamataas na gumagamit ng social media araw-araw. Ang internet ang isang bagay na importante sa kultura ng Pilipino, ito'y parte ng buhay ng Pilipino sa maraming aspeto. Ang pagbagal nito ay malaking sagabal sa lipunan sapagkat maaapektohan nito pati ang mga negosyo't ekonomiya sa Pilipinas.
