Heather Watches SG1: s1ep4 The Broca Divide

On todays episode of Heather doesn’t have anything better to do with her time and wants to re-watch episodes she’s seen 8 times/in the last 2 months, I will be rewatching Broca Divide and giving my thoughts in the form of dot points. It makes me laugh, it makes you laugh apparently and its just a bit of fun. I will try and put these all in one place at some point so we can find them all.

Warning: I don’t like Daniel in this episode (or most for that matter) so if Daniel is your fave, look away!

S01E01-02 - Children Of The Gods

I've had this idea to do “liveblogs” of the Stargate series for a while, and I suppose now that we've all got nothing but time on our hands, it's as good a time as any to actually do it.

Also, Amazon Prime is apparently cycling Stargate out of Prime Video, so now I have an excuse to finally buy the DVD sets like I've been meaning to do for ever since the show was actually on the air. Because screw Amazon for dropping the best sci-fi show ever made anyway.

(I already have season 1 on DVD, so there's no waiting. Plus it means I can ignore any cliffhangers.)

Bored SFs playing poker in front of the gate. I'd forgotten how ruthless about telling-absolutely-all-of-the-backstory these early episodes were.

I think the DVD version is uncut, so I should have the full-length “reproductive organs on the inside” speech, but we'll see when the time comes.

Huh. So Apophis does turn the gate off for a hot second here. Which is a plus, considering if he walked backwards into a wormhole, the first...five or so seasons would be really boring.

Jaffa armor is bulletproof in this episode.

SF dudes running around the SGC. Get used to that one, boys. You'll be doing that for years.

General Hammond!

That is a nice upward shot in the gateroom there. Give everybody a chance to get used to the space.

The giant Ra statue thing in the title sequence is a throw-back to the movie, but I did like when they moved to a show-specific opening sequence.

“Get re-assed to NASA. That's where all the action's gonna be. Out there.” Yeah, about that one, Jack…

The original Fringedweller's Guide, which I am shamelessly copying (now gone from the interwebs), once observed that this episode is kind of weird since Richard Dean Anderson looks nothing at all like Kurt Russell but Michael Shanks looks nearly exactly like Stargate!James Spader. And…this is just as true now as it was then.

I feel like Hammond's duty ribbon patch gets bigger over the course of the series.

Oh man, Hammond is totally playing hardball with Jack on this first episode.

He just called Jack “Airman!” Holy crap, that's super mean. Damn.

I don't know why General Hammond is so upset at Jack tossing a Kleenex box through the gate. How many million dollars is the Air Force not putting on the line with box-of-Kleenex-v-MALP? Frankly, it's very cost effective.

Every last one of those SFs has an AR-15. To a man.

Sam! Sam, Sam, Sam! My whole heart!

(Other than Janet, Jacob, Paul Davis, and Caldwell. But it's early days and for now there is only Sam.)

Oh, yes! We did get the whole speech. I think this is the uncut version! Hell yeah.

I love this show, but Shau'ri really does get shoved in the fridge.

Jack and Kowalski in absolute awe of two brains just...grooving.

When does Jaffa armor stop being bulletproof? Because here we are on Abydos, and it clearly still is.

Now, I'll admit, Alexis Cruz has his appeal, but I think Apophis is going a bit far to call Skaara a “perfect specimen.” …Well, after looking up some internet pictures, though, he's not far off these days.

So, by this point, we have already got all the major players for the first Big Arc on the board. Jack, Carter, Daniel, Teal'c, Hammond, and Apophis have already had screen time. Teal'c's intro was really sneaky, though, which is a nice touch.

Oh! The control room is directly opposite the gate. I always thought it was up a level. Huh.

Wait, why is Hammond so mad at Daniel there? That's weird.

Oh man, some of these folks are killing it at the Game of Intense Hats. The Jaffa aren't even making a serious effort here.

My gosh, I'd forgotten how fluffy Daniel's hair was in these early episodes.

Teal'c seems to have some kind of a strategy here, but I genuinely can't suss out what it is.

I know that part of this is Apophis being a dog, but if I had a giant, oozy pouch in my stomach, I would not be wearing a rave bikini. Just sayin'.

Apophis' eye make-up is on point. Gold shadow, winged liner, boy got eye game.

“Feretti's conscious, sir!” Literally everyone just ditches Hammond without so much as a by-your-leave.

Yes, definitely the uncut version.

Before it got shifted to mean the whole planet, Chulak was really a thriving metropolis here.

Poor Hammond. He really has a hard time watching everybody go away and not knowing if they're gonna come back.

Teal'c very sneaky there, covering up the tau'ri symbol. And then the SGC intentionally plasters it all over every damn thing they send to space.

That is the weirdest palanquin design I've ever seen. Turn-over for the bearers must be super high.

“For this, you can stay at my place!” That line always makes me giggle.

I think some of these shots from the Death Glider are recycled from the movie.

Klorel is a rude little ass.

Look-outs see bad guys coming. Look-outs immediately stand up and make themselves more visible targets.

Daniel really cuts his dial-time in the coming episodes.

This is actually quite a tense scene with the running gun-battle retreat.

All of SG-1, standing heroically in front of the gate for the first time. Gets you right…here.

For the record, I love the credits music. I think I prefer it to the opening theme.

Manipal Gourmet!!

It's been 2 years in Manipal, and the flavors of the town are fresh on the tip of the tongue. Presenting some of the most delicious dishes which I have enjoyed in Manipal!

1. Nachos Salad

Where: Basil Cafe, End Point Road, Manipal

Nachos have always been a good snacking option. Small circular baked chips, it added to the fun when accompanied by salsa sauce or cheesy dip.

But I never thought it would taste equally great as a salad. So when I first went to Basil Cafe, a friend ordered this, and I gave her a look because I personally have no affinity for salads.

And then it arrives. Perfectly arranged in a circular plate on the edges, with salad dressing occupying the central region. Chopped lettuce leaves, along with baked kidney beans, olives and carrots forms the base of the salad, perfectly dressed in creamy mayonnaise sauce. Accompany it with a soup, and this will form an epic appetizer!!

2. Filter Coffee

Where: 1. MTR, Udupi 2. Egg Factory, Tiger Circle, Manipal 3. Woodlands, Krishna Temple Campus, Udupi

By definition, it is a coffee prepared by mixing frothed and boiling milk to the decoction obtained by brewing coffee powder in a filter. By taste, it is a flavorful caffeine drink.By experience, it is one drink that gets you high just by the aroma.Such is the joy of having filter coffee or 'kaapi' as it is often called in this part of the country, that one cup is just not enough. But you won't go for another one unless you want to be an owl that night.3 places in Manipal/Udupi region serves best filter coffee I had till date, all the places have their distinct flavor and taste.Highly recommended, read in bold and capital, if you are a coffee lover.10 on 10 for this wonderful beverage!!!

3. Idli Fry

Where: Woodlands Restaurant, Udupi

Col. Sanders patented pressure frying method of chicken and gave the world what we today know as KFC.Had this snack be patented before Col. Sanders did, the world would have seen a different item as 'Finger Lickin Good' A humble idli, and nothing but just the idli, deep fried, served with tomato ketchup and coconut chutney. From the first look, it gives an impression of French Fries, but those come no way closer when taste is concerned.Served piping hot, straight out of the frying pan, these crunchy bites can easily shift roles from being a tea-time snack to a yummy starter before dinner. A must try at Woodlands Restaurant!!!

4. Lasagna

Where: Coffee Valley Restaurant, Tiger Circle, Manipal

Unlike the Chinese food, I think Italian food has been successful in retaining its taste and flavor. And this one is no different.

Three interleaving layers of pasta, with the middle layers filled with cheese, mayonnaise, vegetable sauce which makes you go yummmmmm with every bite you take.

A rather distinct feature of the dish is that even though each layer has its own unique taste, when savored together they perfectly complement each other and stimulates your taste buds to the highest level.

Double delight if you prefer Chicken Lasagna. Foodgasm of the highest order. Now stop drooling over the photo, get to the place and savor the dish.

I'll give all my money for this dish, hands down tasty!!!

5. 3 Cheese Omelette

Where: Egg Factory, Tiger Circle, Manipal

Mozzarella, Gouda, Cheddar, Eggs!! Your Flavors combine, I am 3 Cheese Omelette. 3 Cheese Omelette, it's a hero, gone take other dishes, down to zero!!

I know I will get a zero for this Cheesy Parody of Captain Planet, but 3 Cheese Omelette will get 11/10 for taste, flavor, texture and every other term that can be associated with a dish. A cheese lover expects nothing more than 3 of the best cheese in the world put together in an omelette. Exuding a creamy flavor in each of its bite, 3 Cheese Omelette is the best thing a cheese can ever do to an egg.

Must Try!!

6. Full Power Maggi

Where: Night Canteen, TAPMI Campus, Manipal

Hadn't I been suffering from late night hunger syndrome, I wouldn't have come across this beauty! 3 best things in the world, viz. Maggi, Cheese and Eggs, when put together will give you nothing but Nirvana!

Stands true to its name, it gives you full power to complete the unfinished assignments, for the taste lasts so long on your taste buds, it doesn't let you sleep.

Missed the dinner tonight? You know what will satiate your hunger!!! :D

7. Basil Creamy Pasta with extra cheese

Where: Basil Cafe, End Point Road, Manipal

Continuing with the cheesy tale, the dish here is an overload of yummyness. The dish unfolds one awesome layer followed by other.

1st the Penne pasta, next up is the Alfredo and Mayonaisse combo, sprinkled with freshly ground oregano and overloaded with cheese (read: Lots of Cheese).

Pasta lovers, if you haven't been to this place, book a table as soon as you read this, you surely won't gonna miss this one.

"Indulge" in this gastro treat!!!

8. Cheese Garlic Naan

Where: Woodlands Restaurant, Udupi

Once the food expert at Domino's visited Krishna Temple at Udupi, and had lunch at Woodlands, where he ordered a Cheese Garlic Naan. And after having it, he attained a divine intervention, and that's how the Cheese Burst Pizza was born. Coming to this one, a normal naan, poor fellow wouldn't even have imagined in the wildest of his dreams that it could become something so irresistable. In true sense we can say, the naan has made a complete turnover.

Spiced up with garlic and suaved with cheese, oozing out with the tiniest of splits, Cheese Garlic Naan makes an ultimately delicious and tasty companion to accompany with gravy or daal. I, however, prefer without any sides. (Words of Wisdom: It tastes better on its own)

Highly, Highly Recommended!!!

9. Cheese Balls

Where: 1. Konark, Udupi 2. Sizzler's Ranch, End Point Road, Manipal

When you order the starter more than the main course, rest assured it is going to be a great starter. The tantalizing aroma of these little round things will make you lose sense of time and space around you, and make you go gaga over them with their enriching taste and soulful flavor.

And they chip in with different partners , sometimes teaming up with corn seeds, sometimes with chilly, but everytime ends up being the hero.

Get hypnotized and Savour till the last bite!!

10. Podi Dosa

Where: MTR, Udupi

What's an ideal meal? Is it the one which excites each of your senses or the one which looks so delicious that you can't just resist yourself? Nah! An ideal meal is a simple one. No added effects. Just like a Raw file. And that brings me to this one. The spicy Podi, a powder typically consisting of spices like dry chillies, beans and sesame seeds, evenly spread over a dosa, a perfect example of a simple dish. What makes this great? Simply the taste!! When you go to MTR next time, that's what you order.

11. Deep Blue Sea

Where: Oh Cafe, Malpe Beach, Udupi

A refreshing drink at a refreshing place, what else do you expect in life? A mixture of "sugar, spice and everything nice" delivers a PowerPuff perfomance and hits those dead brain cells a thunderous kick, bringing them back to life. And all this with an unobstructing view of the beautiful Malpe beach, just like the cherry on top of the cake.

So when you are tired after a long day's work, or just need a break from the routine, head on towards Malpe, and take a dip in Deep Blue Sea!!!

12. Aloo-Bhindi & Daal-Roti

Where: Suresh Mess, End Point Road, Manipal

There comes a time when you just can't take in any more cheese on your plate. And that's when you long for something homely. A simple meal definitely satiates hunger and soul, and that's what happened to a reluctant me when I first visited the place.

The mind doesn't give a darn about the ambience when you are served "Straight-from-the-stove" rotis, coupled with an aromatic jeera-tadka daal and evergreen aloo-bhindi.

Heaven!!! <3

13. Chocolate Pancake

Where: Uncle's Point, Saralebettu, Manipal

Breakfast is considered to be the most imortant meal of the day, and if your day begins with this, rest assured it is going to be a great day ahead. Now for the people who expect an English style pancake, this one is not similar to that, certainly not by the looks.

Prepared from a starch based batter containing flour and milk, the texture is similar to that of a dosa, but layered intricately in the pan so that it doesn't get crispy like a dosa. Add to that a spread of chocolate sauce, yes its everyone's favorite Nutella, and you just don't expect anything else from life.

While it takes a bit of effort to reach the place, once you have Nutella spread pancake on your table, just one word, Nirvana!!!

14. Gulab Jamun

Where: 1) MTR, Udupi 2) Tiwari Chat, Manipal

Well, this needs no introduction. Everyone's favorite dessert, liked by one and all. So what's so special about the gulab jamuns here? Perhaps nothing. Or maybe there's something. One thing is sure, it is served piping hot, the texture is so soft, makes you go ummmmm.... as the tiny red sphere dipped in a sweet sugary syrup just melts in your mouth.

Sweet cravings? Gulab Jamun is the answer!!

15. Sizzling Brownie

Where: Saiba, Manipal

Straight from the hot plate, comes an exciting act of fire and ice. And boy they make one hell of a combination. This particular dessert shows the true essence of "Opposites Attract".

So perfectly is this dessert made, you just do a mental checklist which goes like

Brownie- Check Ice cream- Check Chocolate Sauce- Check Nuts- Check Steaming hot plate- Check

Extremely well-cooked brownie, spreading that enchanting aroma as it makes its way to the serving table gets well complemented by the ice-cream on top and you just get desserted with this!

P.S. Careful while taking the first bite, it can sizzle your tongue!! :D

16. Chandrahara

Where: MTR, Udupi

When a dessert is served only on Sundays, you can assure one thing that it is going to be something delicious. Now, it is not as appealing from the looks, but as it is said, looks are deceiving. And they certainly deceive in this one. A deep-fried triangle of flour (in Gujarati we call it thhor, not to be confused with the Marvel Superhero), submerged in a pool of thick, sweet khoya milk, with a dash of saffron and some sliced dry fruits. This definitely gives the word "Rich" a whole different meaning. MTR on Sunday? Chandrahara is what you finish with!!

17. Cupcakes

Where: E=MmmCake², End Point Road, Manipal

For those who have a sweet tooth, this one is not to be missed. Never ever in my 24 years have I tasted a cupcake as fresh as the ones available here. And the best thing is, you can blindly choose any one, without thinking about how it will taste.

Personal favorite at this shop is Vanilla Sky(right one in the picture), strawberry cupcake with richly flavored Vanilla icing and Marmalady (Orange cake base with chocolate icing, always the best combo). Both of these are highly recommended.

Now you need to be early to grab your favorite cupcakes, as the shop opens at 5.30 and remains open till stocks last, which is an hour at max.

Bored on a mid-week evening? Relish the fresh cupcakes!!

18. Apple Blondie

Where: Zza Bar, near Inox, Manipal

Desserts never disappoint and you are never too full for a dessert, because desserts go to heart! Apple pie, evenly baked and crisp crust with a hint of cinnamon! And the evergreen vanilla ice-cream makes the best pair with anything!!

Devour the flavor and the texture of the pie, indulge in the creaminess of vanilla, and enjoy the dessert!

19. Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Icecream

Where: Payohima, Tiger Circle, Manipal

Chocolate never disappoints! It always plays its part, right from nursing a broken heart to celebrating the joy in life.

And here we have an overdose of chocolate, yet you won't feel that numbness in your taste buds due to chocolate overload. Extremely subtle flavors of this ice cream, perfectly complements the rich, smooth, soft texture of the brownie, and this flavorful combination takes you on a wonderful joyride.

Get High on Brownie, it's Addictive!!

20. Honorary Mentions

These are the dishes which I personally loved, so here’s a list of those.

1. Creamy Tomato Pasta, Basil Cafe 2. Daal-Baati-Churma, Rajasthani Mess 3. Mini Idli, Woodlands 4. Chicken Patiala, Spicy Village 5. Daal Khichdi, Dollops 6. Death-By-Chocolate and Kesar Kulfi, Polar Bear 7. Badam Halwa, Konark

All these were tantalizing dishes, and I was so busy hogging on them that couldn’t get a click of those. Saved some drooling there!!

21. Mitha Paan

Where: Panwallah outside Dollops, Tiger Circle, Manipal

And that is what you would like to have after hogging on those delicacies. Sweetened by gulkand, cooled by fennel, enhanced by tutti fruits and topped with a cherry, meticulously rolled up in betel nut leaf, this relaxer exerts flavorful juices the moment you take a bite and slowly dissolves in your mouth leaving behind an enriched freshness in mouth and desirable easiness in the tummy.

And it's a WRAP, is what you will say after having the bite!!!
