okay so i just steamrolled thru detective pikachu returns over the past 2 days because i was sick and had nothing else better to do and right after finishing it i went into the tags and WOWIE the negative reception is very large!! i do understand and even agree with some of it but i just felt the need to get my own thoughts down (again. sick with nothing better to do) so take a peek under readmore for very typical elongated halo ramblings about his fave video game series
for the record i never played the first game (only watched a few clips of it on youtube even) but i did go see the movie in theaters. just figured i'd mention this ahead of time so my favoritism is known and to prevent myself from coming off as a perfectly unbiased reviewer
BEWARE THE SPOILERS BTW
(post-editing note: it be long under here, you have been warned)
to start off YEAG this game is not worth 50 bucks! the story's pacing is all over the place and is very basic, the graphics are not particularly well refined, the characters' expressions do not fluctuate as much as they should (professor gordon in particular ;-; i felt so bad for him), and the voice acting outside of merloch and detective pikachu himself are kinda phoned in! it felt like an early 2000s 4kids dub for real. even the gameplay aspects themselves were rather meh in presentation; the button hitboxes were annoying to deal with and as cool as i thought the "main" mechanics were they were incredibly clunky and the tension they tried to build up in the "solving the case" climaxes was just Not It. there was absolutely no reason for the loading/pauses to take that long
(the pokemon gimmicks were okay tho. i would die for growlithe)
however, this isn't a problem specific to this game. while i enjoyed scarlet it was definitely not 60 bucks material (and when i went back to it for the teal mask i even went "good lord, did it always run this badly?"). i gotta give credit to detective pikachu, at least this game ran properly for the most part and never crashed on me lmao
while that doesn't negate the criticisms i previously mentioned i simply wanted to say that this is going to be a problem for as long as pokemon keeps making money. this isn't me finger-wagging at anyone in particular (i certainly have no room to talk, i did say i liked scarlet), i just wanted to say: yeah, pokemon has been A Mess
"but halo!" you cry. "you talked like the negative reception was overblown! what gives the giant negative paragraph??"
because much like scarlet, i still really enjoyed this game sdfjnsdk. how can i say that with confidence, though, when i largely agree that there were many, many issues to be had with its performance?
the word of the day: expectations
and perhaps this is where my bias comes into it. whenever i play a spinoff game (like snap or pokepark for instance), i don't really go into it for mindblowing gameplay and stories, i do it for the same reason this series has kept me enraptured for over a decade of my life:
the pokemon themselves!!
there are SO MANY little things that the regular games don't go into, and while i have my own headcanons and OCs i can play off of, it is so much fun to see actual canon material acknowledge certain things you've only ever theorized about!!
the whimsicott were so fun to watch float around, the article asking where a furret's tail began and ended made me laugh out loud, the fact that they went hard into the "slowpoke tails are eaten as food" thing, and the "let's not get into that right now" jokes about venonat hunting other pokemon and dusknoir eating souls LIKE. i LOVE when pokemon goes into its more "serious" aspects. i know main series games do it too occasionally but outside of offhanded mentions or pokedex entries, do they go this hard into them? if they do and i'm just stupid pls tell me about it i'll eat that shit up
being reminded of less-talked-about pokemon is always a plus and how can you not pop off when you see one of your faves included in the story? (INTELEON AND WOOPER I'LL KICK THEIR ASSES 4 U) it's simply fun immersing yourself into the world of pokemon and getting a glimpse of what it would be like to have pokemon walking down the street and how that affects everyday life! maybe the story is basic, but it served its purpose and i had fun going along with it!
perhaps it's just my mental illness talking, but walking around and seeing all the pokemon and THEN doing the quiz girl's quizzes was actually kinda nice! even if the puzzles weren't that hard, i can't lie and say i didn't pump my fist when i guessed where the mystery was going like with cramorant swallowing the jewel or how the passimian statues needed to hold different berries. overall, i just enjoyed being reminded of how much i know and what i love about this series
also, the ways they incorporated the movie were pretty baller. i liked how they didn't just do a repeat of the mewtwo plot from the movie and let me tell you, even tho i called it early on, i liked that my suspicions about the aurora drop being deoxys were confirmed!! (i suppose it's not that hard to guess bcs what other pokemon comes from space, but i just recently finished playing omega ruby again and i normally don't think about deoxys a lot so LET ME HAVE THIS)
plus "i heard they made a movie about the R case" MADE ME SCREAM. i thought they were just going to ignore the movie and do their own thing but then they DID THAT. incredible. you can call my expectations low (which is valid) but holy fuck
so the TLDR for those who want this: if you want a sweet but cliche game exploring the world of pokemon with a lot of funny moments + worldbuilding, then this game is perfect for you. if you want a game with a groundbreaking story with graphics to boot, then yeah, you're not gonna find it here. i've even seen people say their own nostalgia of the original spinoff wasn't enough to get them to enjoy this game, so take my words with a grain of salt
i would say just watch compilations of the game on youtube, but not every youtuber is gonna go fully exploring the game for all of its little details, so if you care about that kind of stuff, buying the game is your best bet. also if you don't care about that kind of stuff then you should just ignore the game altogether etc etc anYwAY
as for a TLDR for the TLDR: new pokemon snap is goated and i would say a more enjoyable experience than this game esp if you didn't like it so PLEASE buy it the game's only 30 bucks and you can throw treats at pokemon PLEASE it has so many sidequests and interactions you can partake in PLEASE i prommy i won't bite PLEASE stick your fingers in my enclosure PLEASE PLEASE PLE

Spoilers?
Why do pokemon games not let you play as a pokemon lore-wise?
Mystery dungeon?
You're a human who got turned into a pokemon
Pokken?
You're still a trainer, just less obviously
Synchro machine?
You're just mind controlling your pokemon- (kinda, you're syncing mentally with it so you can tell it what to do?)
Contests?
Trainer telling your pokemon how to do whatever is required for the contest in question
Tcg?
Not a video game and kinda doesn't count and i don't think it's confirmed if you're a trainer or not
The only thing i can think of is in the let's go games there's a section in the rocket hq where pikachu/eevee has to grab a key item for you, and i think you can only do that once
Correct me if I'm wrong but this has lived in the back of my mind rent free
Edit: pokepark (please correct if wrong)

My thoughts on Scarlet and violet spoiler free
I just finished Scarlet and violet and I'm not going to lie I wish It could have been better.
There was something there it's just....
I don't really know how to feel...
I do enjoy the game but, this franchise has been here for 25 years and this is how far we've gotten. Low poly pixels and game breaking glitches from what a Titan game company.
I don't really know because Legends Arceus was fun but Scarlet and violet just felt soulless and robotic.
The characters have as much characteristic as a blank piece of paper but that's normal Pokemon characters and it's time to do my job as a fanfic writer.
I really don't hate the game in fact I enjoyed it it was honestly better than any other Pokemon game I've played since Gen 5( but that's not a very hard competition LMAO)
I'm not angry I'm just a little disappointed.
I guess I'm just mad that I spend $60 on a looks like PokePark 2 and runs like Sonic 06.
However I did enjoy the fact that you can play three stories and I did like said stories.
I liked the character designs tho can't wait to see them in Masters.
It's a good game there's just...a lot of problems I can't ignore...
It almost feels like their Entire budget went into the Pokemon and not the actual game itself.
I miss 2D Pokemon.

(Over) Analyzing Pokemon Hints (8)
Busy week! For announcements and for personal stuff.
Indigo Disk releases tomorrow! In Pokemon Masters EX there were still evee evolution events ending on the 7th, the same day the final Indigo Disk trailer was released. On the Pokemon Masters EX Twitter/X account there was some promo with screenshots of Nate’s new event, which I’m hoping is hinting at what will happen soon. (Because it involves spoilers, I won’t go into it for now).
Viola has just gotten an event. It’s most likely a just because Winter event with Viola. I am wondering if it has anything to do with Perrin, who I’m assuming we’ll be seeing in the DLC. It could also be a hint to Perrin being added soon, but I don’t think that will happen for a while yet. Probably not until we get a few more Hisui character events (like maybe Calaba and Palina?).
Pokemon Cafe Remix will be getting a special event where you can get a Holiday outfit Torterra. Maybe this has to do with the Sinnoh Legendary events in Scarlet and Violet?
Pokemon GO will be getting a Wyrdeer Raid event on December 23rd. I know it’s probably because Wyrdeer is a reindeer, so Chirstmas themed, but I’m still wondering if it’s hinting at something else.
The final episode for Paldean Winds was released today. I didn’t expect it to come on the day right before Indigo Disk comes out.
In my Indigo Disk trailer post I didn’t realize the code for the Mystery Gift Darkrai is “new moon is coming”. ...For some reason that scares me. I’m… I’m sure it’s just because Darkrai’s Mystery Gift Sinnoh events took place on New Moon island, and it’s because there was a new moon, but I feel like this is hinting at something big.
If it is hinting at some sort of connection to the Sinnoh games, something like a follow-up to PLA (whether this is in the DLC, the anime, or hinting something for next year). I’ll be really happy if it does mean something, but this still scares me.
The UK Pokemon Twitter/X account posted a gif of the Sitting Cuties plushie line, two of which were Hisuian Voltorb and Hisuian Electrode.
The UK and US Twitter/X accounts posted a countdown promo for Indigo Disk’s release tomorrow, featuring the Unova starters. I wonder if this is hinting at Unova characters appearing in Indigo Disk or if it’s hinting at Unova remakes next year. It’s most likely just what it is, countdown with Unova Starters, but I still find it interesting they specifically chose the Unova starters for this one.
The Japanese Pokemon Twitter/X account has promoted really cute iPhone SE cases. One is pink with Pikachu and Eevee, and the other is black with Espeon and Umbreon.
Possibly hints to Johto remakes. I just wanted to mention them because they’re really cute.
PokePark Kanto was announced. I don’t know if it’s like a special event or if it’s something more permanent. From what I’ve read on Serebii it seems to be part of an amusement park where you can find wood carvings of Pokemon in their natural habitats. PokePark Kalos and Paldea have also been trademarked, but it’s unknown if they’re placeholders or will be happening. I’m wondering if these parks will be appearing in their real world equivalents.
I don't plan on posting a review or anything for Indigo Disk. I'm going to try to avoid the internet as much as possible so I don't see spoilers, because Youtube really likes recommending them, lol.

PokePark 2 Overview
This is an old review I did in 2012 that I wish to delete from my main blog, so I'm going to repost it here. Spoilers for anyone who hasn't played this game.
Pokepark 2 Overview
Here are my thoughts on Pokepark 2 after completing the first story mode of the game.
PROS
- Surprisingly darker and more dramatic than the first game. I like this, gives you more of a emotional connection and more of a reason to care about what the characters are doing. Think Mystery Dungeon.
- While Pikachu is as vapid as ever, his companions actually have personalities which endears you to them.
- Fitting music and beautiful graphics. The music for Wish Park is pretty dern creepy. There’s a wonderful pan shot of all the stages at the beginning of the game with all the Pokemon milling about, and my brain started screaming at me “WHY can’t they make a mainstream-ish game like this? The potential for depth and exploration! LOOK at it!”
 - Battle mode is great. You feel more involved with the action, and pressured by the new added time limit.  Being able to use the stage for a match instead of a ‘battle grid’ gives a real sense of integration.
- There are several types of battles, some involving obstacle courses, and others involving having to take on whole gangs of Pokemon at once, akin to Pokemon Rumble.
- The minigame “Attractions” are just like revisiting the old Kids Corner in the Stadium games. This fills me with warm fuzzies, as well as the knowledge that you can play these games in multiplayer with friends. Just like Stadium. C:
- The whole friend-making gimmick actually has a point in the story’s plot now. As a result, it doesn’t feel quite as much of a drag.
- There are a wider variety of ways to make friends. Besides the original battle/chase/quiz/hide and seek, we now have added 'taking photos’ and 'giving items’. I like the taking photos idea, as it has a sort of “Pokemon Snap” vibe to it.
- Speaking of the photo-taking, its quite a source of entertainment. You’re not restricted to just taking what’s in front of you, being able to use the Wiimote to shift your point of view in several directions.
CONS
- There is quite a long tutorial mode in this sequel where you get led everywhere for a bit. Bear with it, its not too bad.
- The movement of the Pokemon you control is still awkward. This is annoying, especially when I know its possible to have control pad movement with precision (Rumble)
- The AI of the Pokemon you battle can go from the sublime to the ridiculous. In some cases I’ve had opponents stand there and do nothing, and in other cases, spam a move that prevents me from retaliating.
- There are only four attractions as opposed to Pokepark Wii’s FOURTEEN. I’d say this was disappointing, but I remembered how annoying it was to be forced to play said games in order to move the plot along. However, it would have been nice if they’d included the attractions from Pokepark Wii in the multiplayer mode in order to up the replay value of the game.
- The game does seem a touch too short. First story mode took me 13 hours.
SCORE - 7/10
Pokepark 2 is a definite step up from the first game. Your involvement carries more weight and importance, which in turn gives you a reason to want to play. And I sense a lot of potential here for future, more in-depth 3D Pokemon RPGs, in the case of the Pokepark game engine.

ALL I WANT TO DO IS PLAY HERE WITH PIKACHU FOREVER, DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND?
[Image ID: An image of a human Piplup from Poképark 2: Wonders Beyond. Piplup is a white, pale boy who is mostly obscured by his large, blue cape. He is wearing a light blue tee shirt and long, puffy pants of the same color. He is standing stiffly with his right hand raised up to indicate he was previously looking at it. Piplup is staring behind him with his head turned and only his nose, mouth, and eyes, which depicted as are wide and terrified, drawn. His visible eye is glowing purple to reference the purple coloring in the antagonist characters. His teeth are clenched and he is crying. The lighting is extremely dark and tinted blue, alongside the lighting of the blue candelabra from Wish Palace in the background to indicate Piplup is in the palace. The caption is a direct line from the game. End ID.]

I was cleaning up a little and, woooo, I found my Wii remotes, Nunchucks and the remote sensor! I just have to set it up at one point and then I can play Epic Yarn and Return to Dreamland! The question is now, how the hell am I gonna plug in the sensor because I don’t have that input anywhere on my computer where it could fit
