Plarn is plastic yarn a way of recycling plastic bags and using them as a source of material rather then a waste!
Plarn can be used to support the homeless by knitting the plastic strips into mats for them to sleep on

I've been working on this bag for a while. Not sure how many bags went into it. I'll keep track next time. I hope I still like the size when I start adding groceries to it. Just gotta pick out some yarn for straps and I'll find out.

so crochet update
i made plarn for the first time with some of the plastic bags we've been hoarding
and it's actually really fucking cool?
i feel bad cause maybe about a fifth of each bag ends up as scrap because the handles i dont think are usable but i know it would go in the trash either way at least the rest of it will be used
im making a lil crossbody clutch bag and it's so fucking durable!!!! and good texture!
highly recommend, consumer recycling just about does not fucking matter in the grand scheme of things but it sure is cool

Bag Of Bags Update:
Tumblr media
I'm out of plarn! Gonna have to get more, which is gonna be tricky since my city has officially gone plastic-free, but we'll see what I can do. I wish I'd kept track of how many bags I've used. The bag is about 4 inches tall now!!

Long ago I was struggling with depression. I didn't have anything to do much of the time. And then a lady from church taught me to make plarn sleeping mats. *gasps* Where has this amazing Plarn been all my life?! And so I devoted my whole being to making plarn sleeping mats for the homeless.

people making plarn must live in states or places that still give out plastic bags cause that shit is worth goldddd where I live
like people with cats who use it for cleaning the litter box have already gone through a few years of hoarded plastic bags
like it is great for the environment but that day to day gets inconvenient for the regular folk who just wanna put dog throw up in a small plastic bag or have small plastic bags in the bathroom to put their tampons in without going out and buying more plastic bags
theres gonna be a day I have to buy plastic bags if the state next to us changes their policy and that feels very counterproductive

exciting to experiment with what stitches work best for recycled reusable tote bags - regular single crochet felt like it had too much stretch. #crochet #recycledyarn #plarn #reusablebags (at Bristol, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfueTd0OQ0o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
