I almost exclusively work with plant based yarns due to allergies. It's not always easy to substitute for animal fibre yarns with them, but over time I got quite proficient at it. Day 4 - YARN WINDING A tool that is important to my practice is my yarn winder. When knitting with industrial machines, there are many levels of checks that need to take place, and yarns tension is key to a successful knitted sample. Because of the nature of my work, some of the plant based fibres that I source are normally used for hand-knitting . This means that my bamboo ( and sometimes organic cotton) arrive in batches of hand painted hanks 🧶 Before I take the yarns for knitting these hanks need to be hand winded first using a wooden yarn winder which makes sure that the yarns first transfer manually into cone; after that, I start the second yarn winding process at the sampling unit using an industrial yarn winding machine 🧵( see Simet’s industrial machine on third photo).
