FOM BLOG: GILLINGHAM 1-3 PETERBOROUGH UNITED
My Thoughts On Gillingham V Peterborough United.......
Gillingham have lost 3-0 and 3-1 against Lincoln City and Peterborough United in back to back home league fixtures at Priestfield Stadium, Lincoln City and Peterborough United are first and third respectively in The League One Table and both teams are going to be in serious contention for automatic promotion into The Championship - unless there is a serious drop in form from both sides between now and the end of the season - What these two home defeats against Lincoln City and Peterborough United have shown us is probably something we already knew before Gillingham played against Lincoln City On The Fifth Of February, There is a serious gap in quality between Gillingham and the teams at the top end of League One, and whilst Gillingham have started to pick up points against Accrington Stanley, Crewe Alexandra, Sunderland and Charlton Athletic, With Gillingham picking up ten points from these four matches, So Gillingham have found a way to win against some of the teams chasing the playoffs, But Gillingham needed to build on that incredible 3-2 win against Charlton Athletic with another win against Peterborough United and Gillingham could have taken the momentum of six points out of six against Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United, and take the confidence from those two wins into the next two league matches against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon.
Any talk after The Charlton Athletic Win that Gillingham can challenge for a playoff spot is now unfortunately wishful thinking, We would all love to see Gillingham win the next eight league games and make a genuine attempt to challenge for a playoff spot, But Gillingham have not gone on a run of eight wins in a row all season, and it is going to take an incredible winning run like that for Gillingham to be in serious contention for a playoff spot, Accrington Stanley may well be eight points ahead of Gillingham in The League One Table, But Accrington Stanley have got two games in hand over The Gills, Blackpool have got three games in hand, And Ipswich Town and Oxford United have got two games in hand, So eight points off the final playoff spot could well see the points tally increase to ten, twelve or fourteen points, But the one thing Gillingham can do in the next two league games against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon is win both matches to ensure that both Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon cannot close the gap between themselves and Gillingham, and back to back league wins would go a long way for Gillingham to retain there League One Status for The 2021 / 2022 Season.
As for how the match went against Peterborough United, Gillingham Lined Up As Follows,,,,,, Jack Bonham, Ryan Jackson, Robbie Cundy, Jack Tucker, Connor Ogilvie, Callum Slattery, Kyle Dempsey, Tom O'Connor, Olly Lee, Vadaine Oliver John Akinde, SUBS: Sacha Bastien (GK), Robbie McKenzie, Stuart O'Keefe, Alex MacDonald, James Morton, Tyreke Johnson and Jordan Graham - Christian Maghoma and Matty Willock both dropped out of the match-day squad from Gillingham's 3-2 win against Charlton Athletic, Because Callum Slattery returned to the starting line up and Jordan Graham was named on the bench, both players returning from injury was an unexpected boost for The Gills, And with Callum Slattery and Jordan Graham returning to the match-day squad, and with Gillingham winning 3-2 against Charlton Athletic, I think there was a lot of confidence from Gillingham Supporters before kick off that Gillingham can get a result against Peterborough United at Priestfield Stadium.
Ten Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to open the scoring from a corner kick, Tom O'Connor whips in a dangerous low in-swinging cross and Peterborough United are unable to clear there defensive lines, And John Akinde manages to tee up Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie's first time effort towards goal is fiercely struck over Christy Pym's crossbar, and that was the chance for Gillingham to take the lead, Thirteen Minutes Into The Match, And Callum Slattery's pass through to Vadaine Oliver was slightly over-hit, And Vadaine Oliver couldn't keep the ball in play and the ball runs out of play for A Peterborough United Goal-Kick, However, A Minute Later, And Gillingham should have opened the scoring, John Akinde puts A Peterborough United Defender under pressure right in the far corner of The Medway Stand / Brian Moore Stand, and a rushed clearance see’s the ball half cleared towards Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before working his way down towards the byline, And Ryan Jackson manages to dig out a dangerous high and hanging cross inside Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Vadaine Oliver does brilliantly to header the ball down towards Tom O’Connor, And Tom O’Connor takes a touch to control the ball before seeing his snap-shot effort towards goal routinely saved by Christy Pym - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO OPEN THE SCORING!!!! - Perhaps Mark Beevers sliding in had put Tom O’Connor off, But had Tom O’Connor got a stronger connection on to the ball, then Gillingham would have taken the lead.
Peterborough United then create two goal-scoring opportunities in The Seventeenth And Nineteenth Minutes Respectively to try and open the scoring, In The Seventeenth Minute Of The Match, Reece Brown has possession of the ball for Peterborough United, And Reece Brown passes the ball forwards towards Mo Eisa, And Mo Eisa takes a touch to control the ball before seeing his shot on the turn blocked by Connor Ogilvie, and the ball ricochets into Jack Taylor’s path, And Jack Taylor takes a touch to control the ball before whipping in a curling in-swinging cross and neither Sammie Szmodics nor Jonson Clarke-Harris could get on the end of that cross from Jack Taylor, and the ball runs out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick, And In The Nineteenth Minute Of The Match, Peterborough United create another half decent goal-scoring opportunity, Peterborough United have a throw on down the left side of the pitch, and Mark Beevers throws the ball back towards Christy Pym, who takes a touch to control the ball, and Christy Pym passes the ball forwards to Reece Brown, who takes a few touches in possession of the ball before playing a short pass square to Jack Taylor, And Jack Taylor takes a few touches in possession of the ball before passing the ball forwards towards Jonson Clarke-Harris, And Jonson Clarke-Harris manages to retain possession of the ball before clipping a accurate cross-field cross pass towards Dan Butler, And Dan Butler plays a first time short pass forwards towards Mo Eisa, And Mo Eisa plays a one / two with Dan Butler and Mo Eisa whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross / shot which is just too high for Jonson Clarke-Harris to header the ball on target, And Mo Eisa’s cross / shot also goes just wide of the far right corner of the net - And that was a decent opportunity for Peterborough United to take the lead.
Twenty One Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to open the scoring, Gillingham have a throw on down the left side of the pitch in Peterborough United’s Half, and from the resulting throw on, Gillingham had the chance to open the scoring, Connor Ogilvie throws the ball long down the line and John Akinde flicks the ball on towards Vadaine Oliver, And Vadaine Oliver manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball back towards Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and although John Akinde cannot header the ball towards goal, John Akinde’s header does flick the ball on towards Kyle Dempsey at the far post, And Kyle Dempsey manages to keep the ball in play before passing the ball back towards Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson plays a short pass out-wide to Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey manages to take a few touches in possession of the ball before playing a one / two with Ryan Jackson and Kyle Dempsey manages to run into a more central area on the pitch in possession of the ball before passing the ball square to Connor Ogilvie, And Connor Ogilvie takes a touch to control the ball before striking as fiercely driven effort which goes comfortably wide of the far right post - Connor Ogilvie scored Gillingham’s Goal Of The Season in our 3-2 win against Charlton Athletic At The Valley, And Connor Ogilvie would have done really well to replicate that incredible goal with that effort on goal against Peterborough United.
Twenty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Jack Taylor is penalised for his foul on Tom O’Connor, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick, and it is from this free kick where Gillingham won themselves a penalty kick, Tom O’Connor opted against kicking a high and hanging ball into the heart of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Tom O’Connor decided to pass the ball square to Ryan Jackson instead, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball, uses his pace to take on Reece Brown, And Ryan Jackson whips in a high and hanging cross and Jack Taylor has his hands on the back of John Akinde and John Akinde has gone down to the deck and Referee Charles Breakspear points to the penalty spot, You can make the case that the penalty kick awarded in Gillingham’s Favour is soft to say the least, and if the reverse were to happen and Peterborough United were awarded the same penalty kick in the same circumstances, then we would be calling this penalty kick soft.
But up stepped John Akinde with an opportunity to give Gillingham the lead from the penalty spot, And John Akinde places his penalty down the centre of the goal with Christy Pym diving to the far right corner of the net and John Akinde has given Gillingham the lead from the penalty spot - GILLINGHAM 1-0 PETERBOROUGH UNITED - Gillingham have bene putting Peterborough United under a lot of pressure defensively in there own final third in very much the same way Gillingham caused Crewe Alexandra problems in there own final third with Gillingham pressing high, winning the first and second ball, and it was very important that Gillingham scored whilst the passage of play was in our favour, and it was also great to see John Akinde get himself on the score-sheet after a very impressive individual display from Akinde in Gillingham’s 3-2 away win against Charlton Athletic.
Thirty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United were on the front-foot and looking to get themselves back on level terms, Mo Eisa has possession of the ball for Peterborough United, And Mo Eisa goes on a driving run down the right side of the pitch, And Mo Eisa passes the ball forwards towards Joe Ward down Gillingham’s Left Side Of The Pitch, Inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Joe Ward is twisting and turning and looking to pull the ball back across the face of goal, and Tom O’Connor not only manages to block Joe Ward’s attempted low cross, But Tom O’Connor manages to boot the ball clear and away from goal - Excellent Defending From Tom O’Connor.
Forty Two Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham had the chance to double there lead for 2-0, Jack Tucker’s long clearance down-field had turned into a good pass towards Vadaine Oliver, And Vadaine Oliver and Mark Beevers were both competing for the loose ball right on the edge of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Mark Beevers times his challenge to perfection, However, Vadaine Oliver has kicked the bottom of Mark Beevers boot and appears to be in discomfort and there are concerns that Vadaine Oliver has picked up a seriously injury and may have to be substituted quickly.
Forty Three Minutes Into The Match, And Frankie Kent is penalised and booked for his challenge on John Akinde and Gillingham have been awarded a free kick, and it is from this free kick where Gillingham almost doubled there lead to 2-0, Tom O’Connor whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Connor Ogilvie has headed the ball square to John Akinde down The Gordon Road Stand / Brian Moore Stand Side Of The Pitch, And John Akinde manages to retain possession of the ball and pass the ball back towards Connor Ogilvie on the edge of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Connor Ogilvie’s first time low effort flashes across the face of goal and goes just wide of the far right post - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR GILLINGHAM TO SCORE FOR 2-0!!!! - Christy Pym had dived low to his left and I am not sure if The Peterborough United Goalkeeper had that effort on goal covered, and I do wonder if Connor Ogilvie’s effort was on target if Gillingham would have scored for 2-0 ???
HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-0 PETERBOROUGH UNITED
I posted the following status update on to Social Media At Half Time,,,,,, HALF TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-0 PETERBOROUGH UNITED - John Akinde's penalty is the difference between both teams at the break, Gillingham have had chances to either take the lead or add to the score-line in what has been a very encouraging first half performance from The Gills. Connor Ogilvie has hit a shot over in the early stages of the match, Tom O'Connor's shot towards goal was saved by Pym, Connor Ogilvie has struck a fiercely driven effort wide from twenty yards, And Ogilvie also had the chance to double Gillingham's Lead just before half time. Peterborough United have not been at there best, Tucker and Ogilvie have had to clear half chances out for a corner kick for the visitor's, Eisa's cross / shot goes just wide of Bonham's far right post, And Peterborough United cannot be as bad as that for the second half.
I also think the way Gillingham have won first and second balls with John Akinde and Vadaine Oliver up-front, how Peterborough United have been forced into conceding throw on’s and free kicks in Gillingham’s Favour and how little we have seen from Peterborough United as an attacking threat is credit to how well Gillingham have performed in the first half, The one thing that concerned me at half time - and this turned out to be correct at full time - is the fact that we are going to see a response from Peterborough United in the second half, and you just wondered if Gillingham had scored with that effort on goal from Connor Ogilvie just before half time, if a two goal lead would have put Gillingham in a more reassuring position to pick up all three points against Peterborough United.
SECOND HALF:
Peterborough United Manager Darren Ferguson responded to Peterborough United’s disappointing first half performance by making a substitution at half time, And Siriki Dembélé comes on to replace Mo Eisa, and also, Peterborough United have switched formation from a back three to a flat back four, Peterborough United clearly are hoping that an additional player in midfield will enable Peterborough United to be much more effective in attack compared to how poorly the visitor’s performed in the second half.
And Forty Seven Minutes Into The Match, Peterborough United do manage to level the scores up at 1-1 in fortuitous circumstances, Reece Brown plays a short pass back to Frankie Kent, who takes a touch to control the ball, And Frankie Kent passes the ball forwards towards Nathan Thompson, And Nathan Thompson passes the ball short inside to Reece Brown, And Reece Brown gets the ball under control before passing the ball out-wide to Joe Ward down the right side of the pitch, And Joe Ward plays a first time reverse pass through to Nathan Thompson, And Nathan Thompson runs forwards in possession of the ball for Peterborough United, and Nathan Thompson cuts inside to evade the challenge from Tom O’Connor on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Nathan Thompson’s shot towards goal is very weak and Jack Bonham has inexplicably parried the ball straight into Jonson Clarke-Harris’s Path, And The Peterborough United Striker was in the right place at the right time to stick the ball into the back of the net to score the equaliser for Peterborough United - GILLINGHAM 1-1 PETERBOROUGH UNITED
And after all the hard work, all the praise Gillingham fully deserved for there first half performance against Peterborough United, The visitor’s have equalised because of a horrendous goalkeeping error from Jack Bonham, Even if you went to the defence that the ball hit a divert, Nathan Thompson’s shot towards goal was very tame and Jack Bonham should be saving that effort on goal, and Jonson Clarke-Harris’s equaliser has cancelled out Gillingham’s Half Time Lead, I know Jack Bonham has rarely let Gillingham down throughout his time in-between the sticks for The Gills, But that goal has to go down as a goalkeeping error from Jack Bonham.
Forty Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Callum Slattery is penalised and booked for his foul on Siriki Dembélé, And Peterborough United have been awarded a free kick, and from the resulting free kick, Peterborough United had the chance to take the lead, Frankie Kent plays a short pass towards Jack Taylor, And Jack Taylor clips the ball forwards into the heart of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Jonson Clarke-Harris wins the aerial challenge up against Robbie Cundy and Jonson Clarke-Harris gets on to the end of his own knock-down and Jonson Clarke-Harris takes a few touches in possession of the ball before seeing his shot towards goal brilliantly blocked by Jack Tucker, and the ball is deflected out of play for A Peterborough United Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Peterborough United had the chance to take the lead, Dan Butler whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Vadaine Oliver headers the ball partially clear towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Sammie Szmodics’s first time effort towards goal fails to hit the target by some considerable distance and the ball goes out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick.
And although Sammie Szmodics’s failed to hit the target with that first time effort towards goal, In The Fifty First Minute Of The Match, Peterborough United turned this match on it’s head to take the lead, Callum Slattery is penalised for his challenge on Siriki Dembélé, and it is from this free kick where Peterborough United score to take the lead for the first time in this match, Siriki Dembélé passes the ball square to Dan Butler, And Dan Butler takes a touch to control the ball before running forwards down the left side of the pitch, And Dan Butler back-heals the ball to Mark Beevers, And Mark Beevers passes the ball first time square to Siriki Dembélé, And Siriki Dembélé takes a touch to control the ball before threading through a fantastic through-ball through to Jack Taylor down Gillingham’s Right Side Of The Pitch Inside Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Jack Taylor manages to retain possession of the ball before playing a short pass back to Sammie Szmodics, And Sammie Szmodics takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square towards Siriki Dembélé on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Siriki Dembélé takes a touch to control the ball before evading the sliding challenge from Kyle Dempsey, And Siriki Dembélé’s shot towards goal takes a looping deflection off Jack Tucker and the ball finds the top right corner of the net and Peterborough United have taken the lead - Now Jack Bonham is at fault for the equaliser, but there is nothing that Jack Bonham could have done to prevent Siriki Dembélé from scoring for Peterborough United. - GILLINGHAM 1-2 PETERBOROUGH UNITED.
Gillingham were preparing a substitution prior to Siriki Dembélé scoring for Peterborough United, And Jordan Graham has come on to replace Vadaine Oliver, who clearly cannot continue playing after that collision with Mark Beevers in the first half, and we now are not only disappointed that Peterborough United are currently winning 2-1 against Gillingham, But we are also concerned about the seriousness of Vadaine Oliver’s injury, especially when you take into consideration that Dominic Samuel will likely be out injured for the rest of the season and Gillingham are seriously lacking in attacking options, Because if Vadaine Oliver is going to be out injured for a few weeks, then that leaves Gillingham with just Jordan Graham, John Akinde and Tyreke Johnson as our only attacking options who are fit and available for selection.
Fifty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United had the chance to go 3-1 up, Peterborough United have a throw on down The Gordon Road Stand Side Of The Pitch, And Siriki Dembélé throws the ball back to Dan Butler, And Dan Butler takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball back to Reece Brown, And Reece Brown takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball centrally to Jack Taylor, And Jack Taylor takes a touch to control the ball before passing the ball square to Nathan Thompson in a right / central position on the pitch, And Nathan Thompson takes a few touches in possession of the ball before clipping a long pass over the top towards Joe Ward, And Joe Ward manages to get the ball under control before firing in a low dangerous cross, And Jack Tucker has thankfully mis-kicked his clearance straight towards Jack Bonham and Jack Bonham has gathered the ball with ease, because this mis-kicked clearance from Jack Tucker could have gone anywhere.
Fifty Five Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United were looking to score a third goal which would put a two goal cushion between themselves and The Gills, Christy Pym has possession of the ball for Peterborough United and The Peterborough United Goalkeeper rolls the ball short to Frankie Kent, And Frankie Kent takes a few touches in possession of the ball before kicking the ball long down-field, and although Jack Tucker does win the initial aerial challenge, the second ball drops kindly into Joe Ward’s Path, And Joe Ward takes a touch to control the ball before threading a pass through to Jack Taylor down The Medway Stand / Brian Moore Stand Side Of The Pitch In Gillingham’s Final Third, And Jack Taylor almost manages to pick out Jonson Clarke-Harris with a dangerous low cross, And Ryan Jackson takes no chances and kicks the ball out of play for A Peterborough United Corner Kick, And From The Resulting Corner Kick, Siriki Dembélé whips in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Tom O’Connor manages to header the ball clear and away from danger at the expense of conceding a throw on - But anywhere will do as far as Gillingham are concerned, and if Gillingham can keep the score-line at 2-1 whilst Peterborough United are on top, then there is going to be a spell in this match where Gillingham can put Peterborough United under pressure, and there is still the possibility of Gillingham scoring an equaliser all the while the score-line is still 2-1 to Peterborough United.
Fifty Nine Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United really should have extended there lead to 3-1, Christy Pym has possession of the ball for Peterborough United, And The Peterborough United Goalkeeper and plays a one / two with Frankie Kent before kicking the ball long down-field, and Connor Ogilvie manages to win the initial aerial challenge and Siriki Dembélé manages to get the second ball under control, take a few touches in possession of the ball before playing a short pass forwards towards Jonson Clarke-Harris, And Jonson Clarke-Harris plays a short return pass back into Siriki Dembélé’s Path, And Siriki Dembélé runs forwards in possession of the ball towards the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area and Siriki Dembélé passes the ball out-wide to Joe Ward, And Joe Ward fires in a first time low cross which takes a big deflection off Connor Ogilvie, and although Siriki Dembélé could not get the ball under control, the ball deflects into Jonson Clarke-Harris’s Path, And Jonson Clarke-Harris first time effort towards goal goes just wide of the far left post - AND THAT WAS THE CHANCE FOR PETERBOROUGH UNITED TO SCORE FOR 3-1!!!!!!! - Jonson Clarke-Harris has already got himself on the score-sheet for Peterborough United in the second half, And The Former Bristol Rovers Striker almost made the score-line 3-1 to Peterborough United with that golden goal-scoring opportunity.
Sixty Minutes Into The Match, And Siriki Dembélé is penalised for his foul on Ryan Jackson in Gillingham’s Half Of The Pitch, and it is from this free kick where Gillingham created a half decent goal-scoring opportunity, Jack Bonham kicks the ball long down-field and Frankie Kent manages to win the initial aerial challenge and the second ball drops down into Robbie Cundy’s Path, And Robbie Cundy plays a short layoff towards Kyle Dempsey in a central position on the pitch on the edge of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Kyle Dempsey passes the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham down the right side of the pitch in Peterborough United’s Final Third, And Jordan Graham takes a touch to control the ball, and Jordan Graham takes on Reece Brown and works his way towards the byline and Jordan Graham’s in-swinging cross hits the roof of the net and the ball goes out of play for A Peterborough United Goal-Kick, With Vadaine Oliver substituted with that foot injury, it leaves just John Akinde as the only target for Jordan Graham to pick out with those crosses aimed towards the far post, on this occasion, Olly Lee and Robbie Cundy were also other attacking options inside Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, But it was John Akinde who had made that run to the far post to try and get on the end of Jordan Graham’s Cross.
Sixty Four Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham make a double substitution with Alex MacDonald and Tyreke Johnson coming on to replace Olly Lee and Alex MacDonald - Tyreke Johnson will be looking to provide Gillingham with more of an attacking option down the left side of the pitch, Or, Tyreke Johnson will look to come on to play alongside John Akinde, and Alex MacDonald will play down the left side of midfield.
But despite that double substitution looking to inspire Gillingham to try and find an equaliser, Peterborough United extended the score-line further in there favour in The Sixty Seventh Minute, Sammie Szmodics manages to retain possession of the ball on the halfway despite being closely marked by Callum Slattery, And Sammie Szmodics manages to play a reverse through-ball through to Joe Ward and Joe Ward is running through on goal down the right side of the pitch, And Joe Ward has tried to pick out Jonson Clarke-Harris with a dangerous low in-swinging cross and Robbie Cundy does enough to divert the ball away from goal, But Jack Tucker has seen his attempted clearance charged down by Jack Taylor and the ball loops up into the air and comes back down again towards Joe Ward down the right side of the pitch, And Joe Ward gets the ball under control and passes the ball back towards Nathan Thompson, And Nathan Thompson runs forwards in possession of the ball for Peterborough United, And Nathan Thompson manages to pass the ball out-wide to Joe Ward right by the byline down the Brian Moore Stand / Medway Stand Side Of The Pitch, And Joe Ward whips in a dangerous low in-swinging cross and Jonson Clarke-Harris manages to flick the ball into the back of the net with a deft flick finish and that goal for Peterborough United means that Gillingham have a mountain to climb to try and get something out of this match - GILLINGHAM 1-3 PETERBOROUGH UNITED.
This is a really poor goal for Gillingham to concede, Jack Tucker’s clearance was charged down by Jack Taylor, Joe Ward’s cross wasn’t blocked and Robbie Cundy wasn’t close enough to prevent Jonson Clarke-Harris from scoring and Jonson Clarke-Harris should have scored for Peterborough United for 3-1 earlier in the second half, But he wasn’t going to miss this time around, and all round the defending for this goal was really really poor, and poor defending and poor goalkeeping has seen Gillingham concede two very soft goals for Peterborough United’s first and third goals of the game - both goals were scored by Jonson Clarke-Harris - and Jonson Clarke-Harris has had other opportunities in the second half to add to his and Peterborough United’s Goal Tally.
Sixty Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United had the chance to put this match well and beyond Gillingham’s reach, Frankie Kent has possession of the ball on the edge of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Frankie Kent plays a short pass square to Sammie Szmodics, And Sammie Szmodics gets the ball under control before running forwards in possession of the ball up towards the halfway line, and Sammie Szmodics threads a through-pass through to Siriki Dembélé as Peterborough United look to hurt Gillingham on the counter attack, And Siriki Dembélé almost manages to pick out Jonson Clarke-Harris with as first time cross across the face of goal and Jack Tucker slides in to make a vital interception and although Sammie Szmodics  does get to the second ball first, Sammie Szmodics’s pass out-wide to Siriki Dembélé is over-hit and the ball runs out of play for A Gillingham Goal-Kick.
Seventy Three Minutes Into The Match, And Peterborough United created another goal-scoring opportunity, Mark Beevers has passed the ball forwards towards Sammie Szmodics, And Sammie Szmodics passes the ball back to Jack Taylor, And Jack Taylor passes a first time pass forwards towards Sammie Szmodics, who gets the ball under control before threading a pass through to Joe Ward down the right side of the pitch, And Joe Ward runs forwards in possession of the ball for Peterborough United, And Joe Ward manages to pull the ball back towards Sammie Szmodics right on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And Sammie Szmodics takes one touch to control the ball and another touch to hit a low driven effort towards goal which was comfortably saved by Jack Bonham - 4-1 would have made complete certainty that Peterborough United would pick up all three points, Because if Gillingham were to score the next goal for 2-3, then there is still a chance that Gillingham can still get something out of this match against Peterborough United, even if a 3-3 draw is looking increasingly unlikely at this point in time.
And after that goal-scoring opportunity from Sammie Szmodics, Gillingham make there fourth substitution of the match with Robbie McKenzie coming on to replace Callum Slattery, And with Callum Slattery already booked for his challenge on Siriki Dembélé, It made sense for Steve Evans to substitute Callum Slattery to ensure that he was available for the weekend’s League One Fixture against Bristol Rovers At Priestfield Stadium.
And Gillingham had a half chance to try and get that goal for 2-3 which would set up an interesting finish to this match, Dan Butler manages to get the ball partially clear and away from goal with an important clearance and Robbie McKenzie wins the aerial challenge in central midfield to header the ball forwards towards John Akinde, And John Akinde manages to retain possession of the ball before passing the ball back towards Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey gets the ball under control, looks around for passing options before passing the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham down the right side of the pitch in Peterborough United’s Final Third, And Jordan Graham gets the ball under control before passing the ball back towards Kyle Dempsey, And Kyle Dempsey passes the ball square towards Ryan Jackson on the edge of Peterborough United’s Penalty Area, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before managing to pass the ball out-wide to Jordan Graham, And Jordan Graham takes a touch to control the ball before working his way towards the byline, And Jordan Graham’s cross is charged down by Dan Butler and unfortunately, the ball deflects off Dan Butler and hits Jordan Graham and the ball deflects out of play for A Peterborough United Goal-Kick.
Seventy Eight Minutes Into The Match, And Robbie McKenzie is penalised and booked for his challenge on Sammie Szmodics right on the edge of Gillingham’s Penalty Area, And From The Resulting Free Kick, Peterborough United had the chance to score for 4-1, Joe Ward has whipped in a curling shot towards goal which is saved and then gathered by Jack Bonham at the second attempt, And Ryan Jackson had done enough to prevent Siriki Dembélé from getting on to the rebound, 4-1 would have been 100% game over, but with the score-line at 4-1, If Gillingham can score the next goal for 2-3, Then Gillingham have got a slim possibility of battling back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3.
Eighty Five Minutes Into The Match, And Gillingham have been awarded a free kick, Joe Ward was penalised for his challenge on Tyreke Johnson down the left side of the pitch in Peterborough United’s Final Third, And Gillingham had the chance to try and set up a grand-stand finish if The Gills were to score with this goal-scoring opportunity, and from the resulting free kick, Jordan Graham has whipped in a dangerous in-swinging cross towards the near post and John Akinde has won the aerial challenge to header the ball across the face of goal, and there was Mark Beevers in the right place at the right time to header the ball over his own crossbar at the expense of conceding a corner kick, and from the resulting corner kick, Jordan Graham has whipped in a dangerous in-swinging cross and Robbie Cundy has headed the ball over the crossbar from close range and the ball has gone out of play for A Peterborough United Goal-Kick.
And the final two noteworthy moments of the match see’s Gillingham trying to force the issue, Jordan Graham manages to retain possession of the ball in a right / central position on the pitch, And Jordan Graham passes the ball back towards Robbie McKenzie, and Robbie McKenzie passes the ball square to Ryan Jackson, And Ryan Jackson takes a touch to control the ball before kicking the ball long down-field and neither John Akinde or Mark Beevers can win the aerial challenge and Ryan Jackson’s long ball down-field almost manages to pick out Alex MacDonald, But Christy Pym manages to gather the ball with ease, and from here, Christy Pym kicks the ball long down-field and the ball bounces through to Jack Bonham to make a very comfortable save, and after five additional minutes of added time, Referee Charles Breakspear blows the full time whistle and Peterborough United have won 3-1 against Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium.
FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-3 PETERBOROUGH UNITED
I uploaded the following status update on to social media after the full time whistle,,,,,, FULL TIME: GILLINGHAM 1-3 PETERBOROUGH UNITED - A Brace from Clarke-Harris and a third goal from Dembélé see's Peterborough United recover from losing 1-0 at half time, three goals in the second half see's Peterborough United pick up all three points in there push for promotion. Peterborough switched from three at the back to a flat back four, And Dembélé made a real difference for Peterborough when he came on at the start of the second half, But two goals in six minutes was the real turning point, especially the first goal which was a error from Bonham. But once Peterborough United equalised, the game just completely turned into the visitor's favour, Jack Tucker had to block a shot at the expense of conceding a corner, Szmodics should have scored to give Peterborough the lead before Dembélé scored to give Peterborough the lead. Clarke-Harris failed to hit the target before he scored to extend Peterborough United's lead to 3-1, and with Gillingham losing 3-1, It was a real mountain for Gillingham to climb to try and get something out of this match, And Peterborough had chances to score for 4-1 as well. Bonham had to save efforts on goal from Szmodics & Ward and for all the praise and plaudits for the way Gillingham performed against Peterborough United in the first half and how Gills were on the front-foot, Pym had very little to do in goal for Peterborough in the second half. After the remarkable 3-2 win against Charlton Athletic at the weekend, The Peterborough United game was an opportunity for Gillingham to build on that fantastic win and pick up another three points, especially as there were only four League One Matches being played tonight.
I then spoke about Peterborough United’s Recruitment Policy and I like the way Peterborough United sign and sell players, Because Every-time Peterborough United have sold players like Jack Marriott, Britt Assombalonga or Dwight Gayle, they have signed players like Frankie Kent, Mo Eisa and Jack Taylor, Peterborough signing players and selling those same players for a profit is a respectable business model, and this business model has given Peterborough United the finances required to improve there London Road Stadium, whilst at the same-time, having the finances and resources available to sign quality footballers for League One knowing that if Peterborough United were to find another Jack Marriott, then Peterborough United could sell that player for £4,000,000, and Peterborough United can then use that £4,000,000 to sign three or four players for over £1,000,000 and if those players develop, then Peterborough United can sell those players for a profit in the future.
Whilst Gillingham have sold Joe Walsh for a fee rising up to £500,000 to QPR In The January Transfer Window, I look at our current squad and Jack Tucker is probably Gillingham’s most sellable asset, but after Jack Tucker, With the exception of Kyle Dempsey, I am looking at the rest of the squad and Jack Bonham, Jordan Graham and Connor Ogilvie are all out of contract in the summer, But looking at the rest of the squad, the one player I can see becoming a sellable asset is Dominic Samuel if he can rediscover the goal-scoring form he had at Blackburn Rovers and find the form which will see a lower end Championship Club put in a bid for Dominic Samuel.
I then re-tweeted Steve Evans Post Match Press Comments and I saw the stats for the second half of the match for Gillingham V Peterborough United, and they do not make for good reading at all, Peterborough United had 79% possession of the ball, Peterborough United had ten efforts on goal, six of those ten efforts were on target, two shots on goal were blocked, and two shots towards goal were off target, Peterborough United had four corner kicks, and they were offside once, and they scored three second half goals as well, Gillingham had 21% and just one effort off target according to the stats, Gillingham needed that second goal whilst we were on top in the first half, Vadaine Oliver getting substituted because of injury didn’t help, and errors from Jack Bonham and Gillingham’s Defence for the first and third goals respectively proved to be costly error’s, especially the first error from Jack Bonham because that gave Peterborough United the lift they needed to turn this match on it’s head to win 3-1.
One of the big problems I think Gillingham have got this season is the fact that we cannot look to the bench and think that anyone can come on and be a game-changer, when you look back at previous Gillingham Squads, Gillingham always had someone like Jermaine McGlashan, Myles Weston, Andy Barcham, Elliott List or Luke Rooney, a player on the bench who can come on and make an impact for fifteen to twenty minutes and Gillingham just do not have a player like that who can make that type of impact, Where as Peterborough United can bring on Siriki Dembélé, and that one substitution along with a change in formation completely changed the result in Peterborough United’s Favour.
Gillingham are fifteenth in League One with thirty seven points from twenty eight matches, And Sunderland are sixth with forty four points from twenty seven matches, I haven’t been thinking about Gillingham challenging for a playoff spot for some-time now, but the next two league games against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon are two massive matches, If Gillingham were to win both league games and pick up six points out of six and teams towards the top end of League One start to drop points, then playoffs are still a slim possibility, and I much rather see Gillingham push themselves to pick up as many points between now and the end of the season because we still believe that we can push for a playoff spot then carry a poor run of form between now and the end of the season into the start of next season.
Both matches against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon are winnable, and that’s got to be the challenge for Gillingham now, pick up six points out of six from the next two league games, because Gillingham can put any lingering concerns about relegation well and truly behind us if Gillingham were to win both league games against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon, Because forty three points from thirty matches would mean that Gillingham would only need eight points from sixteen matches to retain our League One Status, obviously, we are hoping that Gillingham can do more then just avoid relegation, but the sooner Gillingham retain there League One Status, the sooner Gillingham can start to look at other objectives - Hopefully, Gillingham can pick up six points out of six against Bristol Rovers and AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham can move up The League One Table - COME ON THE GILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!
