Melissa Etheridge means something. She represents a set of musicians that achieved a lot in one period, though the later histories of the latter ignore her. Natalie Merchant, for instance, is similar, i.e. she got her biggest successes like Mrs. Etheridge during the 90's, but was she really in tune with the times? Actually, I would say her and Mrs. Etheridge were closer to the zeitgeist than grunge – the latter became easily modified in post-grunge for a reason –, since they were both heavily eclectic in their influences with their opuses following that. While we can agree both of them made some great albums, we also have to admit many took the wrong lessons from them. I mean, the tune on the link could be seen as a template for the soundtrack cuts of your usual prime time dramas.

PRINCESS GOES @ CLUB ACADEMY, MANCHESTER
Tumblr media
Princess Goes (an avant-garde supergroup consisting of vocalist and Dexter actor Michael C. Hall, guitarist and keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen, and drummer Peter Yanowitz.) They recently shortened their name from Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum. I would have preferred Princess and the Butterfly as I am unsure where they go...however, I digress.
They have a new album set for release, 'Come Of Age' the previous album was a stunning masterpiece. Ketamine was my favourite track. I shot them initially in 2021 in Liverpool - in a dingy tiny room on a backstreet. Apparently, they do love playing in dives.
I had hoped playing the Club Academy we would have some superb lighting, but was soon disappointed. I know, I know we are always moaning about lighting...the narrow pit was also rammed, so there was a lot of jostling going on. Support was from the comedic songbird Beija Flo based in Liverpool.
MK Bennett said it so well in this review on Louder Than War here:

Hey everybody, this is from my trip to NYC in December. I wrote something over there that I’d like to share with you all. Today in the UK is known as “Blue Monday”. It is known as such because it is said to be the most depressing day of the year. People haven’t been paid since before Christmas, the weather is gloomy and the days are short as it’s so dark in the mornings and so dark at night. The suicide rates are very high on this Monday and the days around it. I was going through a tough time in December, for a fair few different reasons, and so I took myself away to New York for the month, not really knowing anyone, and decided to get back to ballet and myself and see what happened. Long story short (which I will go into another time!) I ended up writing a song alongside my friend Peter Yanowitz (@petepeterpedro) and we would like to give a little help to others by selling it from this week until the end of February and will be donating to @Mentalhealthfoundation from the sales. They are based out of Glasgow and they are helping to combat mental health problems and lower suicide. Date of release to be announced this week but I really hope you like it and I hope everyone is doing okay this “Blue Monday”, wherever you are in the world. 🙏🏼🖤 Credit to @sophie.skelton (at Richland Center, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7jbQvXB3M1/?igshid=g7pblb745d7h
