theres a lot in my feeds rn about statistics of dogs life expectancy going down and I'm not saying that's false or that we don't need a long hard chat about genetic variation. but i also wonder how much of this is about reporting, ownership culture, and flow of information as well.

#i cant speak for everywhere but at least here #it was drastically more common for animals to die 'for no particular reason' and for it not to be recorded anywhere #registering date of death with the kennel club is still somewhat uncommon #pet insurance is vastly more common now than it was only 10 years ago #as is health investment through vet care and actual humane euthanasia #and i just suspect you run into the same issue as with most things: the people leading to their dogs deaths being recorded in 1995 #would have been more of a niche back then than even now #especially with things like cancer that tend to go under the radar and where methods of detection have changed drastically
