In the 10th video of Maya Expressions we finally graduate into working with more than one waveform at a time. In this video I explore the various things we can do with multiple waves so they look more organic and less mechanical, regular and repetitive. I also show how we can visualise the results of our expressions in the viewport beside relying only on the graph editor. With multiple sine/cosine waves in expressions we open up a truly wide range of possibilities in what we can do.

0:00 - 0:46 - Introduction and greetings 0:47 - 3:39 - Setting up 2 cubes that have exactly the same expressions 3:39 - 4:26 - Using a single expression to drive multiple attributes vs multiple expressions to drive multiple attributes 4:27 - 7:36 - Setting up a third cube and assigning the sum of the first 2 cubes to the translate Y, then observing the result. 7:37 - 10:42 - Creating custom attributes and linking them up in the expressions 10:43 - 11:52 - How to format an expression so it can be easily "repurposed" and pasted into another object's expression. 11:53 - 12:44 - setting up custom attribute values so cube 3 reinforces and doubles when adding cube 1 and 2. 12:45 - 15:18 - making perfectly out-of-phase waves that cancel each other out 15:19 - 16:33 - observing curves with different frequencies, one of the keys to breaking the sine/cosine wave pattern. 16:34 - 17:19 - visualing the path of travel with a motion trail 17:20 - 19:43 - using various values for frequency and seeing the path update interactively 19:44 - 22:23 - trying out even more similar frequencies to further break up recognisable patterns repeating. 22:24 - 23:31 - how to detect repetitions in composite/compound curves (curves that are made up of multiple smaller curves), looking for the zero-crossings. 23:32 - 26:11 - how curves are affected if frequencies are multiples of each other. 26:12 - 27:41 - using offset to break up repetitions and reduce the number of both curves crossing at the same point 27:42 - 29:44 - show how curves can slide and swim across each other to achieve vastly different looks. 29:45 - 32:25 - animation control: setting keyframes on cube2 frequency 32:26 - 33:20 - updating motion trail after changes in keyframes 33:21 - 34:19 - completing the keyframe animation on top of the 2 combined sine curves 34:20 - 35:02 - adding an additional noise curve to the entire waveform 35:03 - 36:11 - breaking up a single line of expression into multiple lines so we can comment them out for controlled testing, easier troubleshooting and visualisation. 36:12 - 37:29 - create another custom attribute for the additional noise amount and connect it to the noise expression. 37:30 - 38:48 - keyframe the new additional noise attribute to alter the later part of the animation curve 35:49 - 41:53 - something that remains a mystery for now on the initial pCube2's reducing of frequency 41:54 - 42:30 - notifying of my Patreon account. Here I used a video to displace vertices. In the finished version I also added further rock maps displacement, shader tweaks, tracked light sources, re-timing of footage and render, and further compositing processes to augment my renders.
