“Checking In on You” (Part 1)
-
ship: kingsley x dizzy (s/i)
word count: 562
cws: some vague allusions to mental health stuff
summary: Kingsley notices that lately, his partner hasn’t been acting like themself, so one night he checks to see if they’re okay.
-
Kingsley put his key in the ignition and turned it. He had just finished a long night of stand-up comedy, and was ready to drive home to his handsome boyfriend, Dizzy.
After starting the car, he backed out of the parking lot of his comedy club and went onto the road, thinking about him as he did so. Dizzy was an endearing man, with a kind soul and a free-spirited, eccentric personality that charmed Kingsley. They were also very creative, dabbling in all kinds of arts and crafts. His house was filled with drawings and paintings and little vases and sculptures that Dizzy had made on a whim. And Kingsley had to admit, it was a pretty good comedian too. Ever since he made Dizzy the co-owner of Camp Kingsley, it always cracked up the audience, both in its solo standup acts and in its duo acts with him.
But lately, Dizzy started to change. Kingsley didn’t notice it at first, and when he did, he just chalked it up to them having a bad day or just being tired from whatever comedy thing they did the night before. But now, whatever was happening with him was worrying Kingsley.
It used to perform at Camp Kingsley multiple times a week, but it started tapering off to once a week, to once every couple of weeks, to not at all. One night, Kingsley asked him why he had stopped performing, and he said he just didn’t feel like it, and he’d perform another day. He wasn’t sure about the validity of that statement, but he didn’t want to turn their discussion into an argument, so he kept quiet about it.
On top of that, he stopped doing any drawings or paintings or photography, even though art was one of his biggest passions. He just stayed in his room most of the time, sleeping well into the afternoon and spending the rest of his day in his bed, tapping on his phone or listening to music on his earbuds.
This self-imposed isolation had built a wall between Dizzy and Kingsley, and the latter took notice of this. Dizzy wasn’t as cuddly and mushy as he used to be. There were less date nights and movie nights and nights where they just hung out together. And Dizzy’s temper had changed too. While he was usually patient and hard to anger, he had become more irritable and pessimistic recently. This was especially clear when he started snapping at Kingsley over inconsequential things. Last night, Dizzy screamed at him because he had unknowingly eaten some leftover pizza they were saving in the fridge. Later on, they remorsefully apologized and admitted that they didn’t know why they were acting like this.
All of this worried Kingsley. It seemed like the joyful and vibrant Dizzy he once knew was now fading into a muted, angry shell of himself.
At long last, Kingsley saw the driveway to his house, and slowly parked his car.
He knew that Dizzy wasn’t happy, but he didn’t talk about it before because he didn’t want to accidentally offend them or make them worse off than they were before.
But after this reflection, it was clear that Kingsley needed to reach out and break through this wall.
He took a deep breath. Then, he stepped out of his car and walked towards the front door.
