me every time the results of a new popularity poll are announced

the crowd boos. we begin to walk off in shame when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.

“they’re right,” they say. we look for the owner of the voice. there in the fifth row stands: sorachi hideaki himself.

1. stabbed sa-chan through the gut in one of the most upsetting scenes in gintama. and then everyone just acted like it never happened.

3. depressingly overrated. you’ve got an entire main cast filled with memorable, hilarious and highly entertaining characters. mister if-i-make-more-than-one-facial-expression-i-will-die has a grand total of zero of those qualities. he’s a glass of air next to a full course seasoned meal. even sogo, who is a box of thumbtacks, brings more flavor to the series.

4. no personality. i remember when people were making jokes about his height because they couldn’t think of anything else to add to his character. even sorachi resorted to that joke later on. so bland he had to steal jokes from his own fandom.

5. FANDOM OVERSATURATION. people manage to write COUNTLESS of meta about what is basically a background character while the main female character, who has 10 times more screentime, interacts with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER, has multiple story arcs along with an overarching story arc, gets nothing.

6. always ranking in the top 5 of popularity polls when he shows up once every 100 chapters- while barely doing or saying anything worth remembering. even the characters themselves (aka sorachi) don’t understand his popularity.

7. probably one of the worst written villains i’ve ever seen? despite his technical flaws, if he’d been a little more entertaining then i probably wouldn’t have minded him. but. he has no flair, no charisma, no panache. nothing to draw you in. gintama’s biggest tragedy is that it has a multi-dimensional protagonist paired with a one-dimensional antagonist. no wonder half the fandom dropped the manga after the plot decided to include him more.

everyday i think about how the most popular ships involve characters who dislike/hate or barely interact with each other while the one relationship that has classic lines like 'without him i can’t do anything’, ‘all that matters is that i die by your side’ and ‘can’t hand you over to anyone’ is a mcfreaking rarepair
