Well, I kinda took myself from “Old English Sheepdog” to “Ronan Lynch cosplayer who failed their dexterity check” because my head is shaped weird and that makes blending really hard, but on the bright side, it’s really soft and fuzzy and fun to pet, and I won’t have to trim it again for like another half-year.

And also I didn’t risk giving some poor hairdresser a breakthrough case or something.

When people ask me what I like to do, I usually say I’m an artist.

Some days, it’s easy to tell. Some days (most days), my hands are covered in colours, fingertips stained from markers and paint under my nails. Some days, paint gets so unbelievably everywhere that I forget to clean it from my brow before I leave. Some days, there are bandages on my hands from opening paint bottles, and my hair is tucked behind a headband to keep it out of my face (it always starts escaping), and splotches of the rainbow are all up my arms. Some days, there’s graphite on the sides of my hands and pen ink on the skin between my thumb and pointer finger. Some days I can’t be bothered to change out of my paintshirt, which is a work of art as much as the canvases.

Other days it’s not so obvious. Other days I’m too tired to do anything at all. Other days I can’t be bothered to deal with paints and markers and pencils and pens. Other days I don’t have the time. Other days I can only do portable digital things, tracing shapes on a screen with my fingertip the same I would a pencil on paper. Other days I seem so put together I couldn’t possibly be that creative and messy, couldn’t possibly do quick sketches unexplainable to anyone but myself.

But yet even on those other days, I remain an artist. The sketchbooks full of incomprehensible drawings, the paintings that ate up hours of my time and still need more, the brushes and paints that take up a corner of my room, the paint splotches on my bedroom floor, all of it stays. All of it stays, and all of it is part of me, even if it doesn’t seem like that. That’s part of the beauty of art, I think. It stays with you, even if you forget about it. Some bit of it is always there with you, in that human desire to create. My relationship with art is a bit complicated. I couldn’t for the life of me define it, especially my own. Some of it I like, and some of it I don’t, and there’s no rhyme or reason to it. 

I like to say I’m an artist, and certainly I am. But in a way, with our creating as we live, aren’t we all?
