Our Week Scouted – June 7, 2019
The first week of June is here and we’ve got serious summer on our minds. But first, check out a new art show, great sidewalk sales, drool-worthy arm candy and so much more.
Tumblr media
Janet Bruce, Night Untamed, 2019. Oil on canvas, 48 x 36”
SEE
Les Yeux du Monde’s new summer show is a stunner — Landscape Reimagined. It will feature 27 painters and 10 sculptors who take landscape as their subject or use their art to literally inhabit and intersect with nature. The show was inspired by the concurrent exhibition, Lady Painters at Second Street Gallery (which we showcased last week) that examines the influence of Abstract Expressionist painter Joan Mitchell on contemporary artists Isabelle Abbot, Karen Blair, Janet Bruce, Molly Herman and Priscilla Whitlock.
The show will also feature sculpture — literally inserted into the landscape — around the grounds of Les Yeux du Monde by ten sculptors who work in central Virginia, New Mexico, Oregon and New York. These works, in media ranging from steel to concrete, stone, styrofoam, wood and more, along with the art inside the gallery will encourage us to honor and celebrate this living earth we all call home in a time of increasing peril to its natural resources. This is an awesome opportunity to bring out the whole family to experience some amazing art.
There will be an opening reception on Saturday, June 8 from 5 – 7 p.m. The show runs from June 8 - August 11, 2019. Les Yeux du Monde is located at 841 Wolf Trap Road and is open Thursday through Saturday 1 – 5 and by appointment.  For more information, consult their website LYDM.co or write [email protected].

Wheatland, Curator of Historical Scientific Instruments at Harvard University, titled, “Astronomy Inside and Out: Jefferson’s Vision for the University of Virginia,” at 6:30pm. The launch of the Rotunda Planetarium projection will follow at 7:30pm. All are welcome to witness the fruition of one of Jefferson’s dreams.

We’re really feeling fall this week at TSG Cville and our top finds reflect that mindset, from the beginnings of leaf peeping to the cool-weather perfect noodles we can’t stop obsessing over.
Tumblr media
“My family and I love to head out to The Market at Grelen this time of year. The prime activity is apple and pumpkin picking, but they also have free hayrides to the orchards on Sundays in October, always a favorite among the younger set! I personally love to hike the trails, and it’s especially gorgeous on brisk days as the leaves put on their annual show. I just discovered they serve sangria every Sunday in October from 11-3, so you know where to find me this weekend.” – Sarah Dawson
Tumblr media
“I did Coolsculpting at Neroli Spa & Beauty Lounge last spring on my tummy and Suzanne assured me that the results would be long-lasting, and I have to say, that’s true. Now is the perfect time to work on those trouble spots and Neroli is hosting a “Trick or Treatment” Coolsculpting event on Thursday, October 17 from 11-4. They will have super low prices on Coolsculpting, treat bags, and they’re giving away Coolsculpting sessions. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about this super buzzed about treatment.” – Christy Ford
Tumblr media
“I recently popped over to Quattro Tizi to pick up their Goorin Bros. Bear Trucker hat for my son Bear and his biggest fans. I then headed across the street to Magpie Knits to have them personalize the cap with his football number. Now is the time to start monogramming for holiday gifting and Magpie can do so many things you might not think of. Just ask!” – Susie Matheson
Tumblr media
“The lovely bowls of pho available at Vu Noodles in the Jefferson Center are swoon-worthy. As a longtime fan of pho, this is the real deal. And it’s vegan! It’s only available on Tuesdays and Fridays, so grab it when you can. Both comforting and healthy, I will be reaching for this often all fall and winter. ” C.F.
Tumblr media
“I just picked up the little book Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey and it’s such a joy. As a writer, it’s fascinating to discover all about other creators rituals—and I believe we are all creators. Packed with 161 inspiring individuals, among them novelists, poets, painters, playwrights, scientists, and mathematicians, as they describe the daily obstacles and self-imposed daily rituals to accomplish the work they love to do. While some methods will not be something I choose to employ (popping untold amounts of amphetamines), many of them are quite lovely and inspiring. This would be a fantastic gift for any artist in your life.” – S.D.
Tumblr media
“I’m upping my cocktail game this fall with these awesome Statesman Beverage Co. cocktail infusions I found at Caspari. I love their Spiced and Mojito Simple Syrups. They’re also great to tote to a tailgate and are the most perfect hostess gift.” — S.M.

Our Week Scouted // August 29, 2019
Tumblr media
There’s a lot happening in our Blue Ridge jewel this week, from a new performance polo we’re excited about to tiny art, packing demos, sales, food and spirits. What more could you want? Read on to get the inside line on all of it.
LOVE: Have you guys heard about Rhoback? It’s a new Charlottesville-based company that puts out amazing performance polos, tees, and pullovers. The three founders (Matt Loftus, Kristina Loftus, Kevin Hubbard) live in Charlottesville, and two of them (Matt & Kristina) are recent graduates of The Darden School of Business, where they came up with Rhoback and built the brand. And you know we adore dogs, right? Well, Rhoback gets its name from the Rhodesian Ridgeback, a dog bred in Africa to hunt lions. The Ridgeback perpetually craves activity and has an unmistakable ridge that runs down its back. “Wearing the ridge on our back inspires us to always be ready for the next adventure,” the trio shared. “We needed a shirt that could transition seamlessly from one activity to the next. We never found that shirt, so we made it. We took our favorite designs and colors, mixed in the best performance fabrics, and made a top of the line set of shirts to fit our lifestyle and hopefully yours, too.” We know we’re huge fans and look forward to supporting and watching this great local business grow. Grab a POLO, TEE, or PULLOVER for yourself, and remember them when it comes to giving season!
LISTEN: Pattie Boden of the amazing Animal Connection holistic pet store hosts an award-winning podcast “What‘s Barkin’ Local” where she celebrates and spotlight the amazing animal community in Charlottesville and Central Virginia. On Wednesday, September 4 Susie and Christy will be her guests where they will chat about local love and their bevy of pets. You can be a part of the conversation when you visit the the Animal Connection Facebook page or The I Love CVille Network  at 3pm where your questions and remarks are welcome. Mark your calendars! Animal Connection | McIntire Plaza, 1701-E Allied St. | 434.296.7048
SHOP: Surprise! Scarpa is having a Labor Day Sale! On Friday and Saturday, sale items will be 50% off. On Sunday 60% off and on and Monday 70% off. So pop in and check it out, and keep going in to score those really amazing deals. Folly is also having their Back to School Sale through Saturday. So get in there and scoop up some choice finds. FOLLY | Barracks Road Shopping Center, 2134 Barracks Rd. | 434.295.0688
TASTE: As reported here awhile back, Early Mountain has a new executive chef on board, Tim Moore, who joins them after a long tenure at The Inn at Little Washington where he was part of the team who earned first two, then three Michelin stars. He is really bringing Early Mountain’s program back to the mission of representing the Virginia Table, and that’s none the more evident than with the new menu he rolled out last week. Each dish is designed to complement Early Mountain’s wines while honoring the bounty around the region. Personally, we can’t wait to try the snapper crudo and pork belly, but really, it all looks amazing. Check out the complete menu here and make plans to head up to the winery to give it all a try. Keep your eyes peeled in an upcoming “Our Week Scouted” for their new wine releases.  Early Mountain Vineyards | 6109 Wolftown-Hood Road, Madison | 540.948.9005
DRINK: We obviously love all things local, and that applies to what we drink, too. Virginia Distillery Company, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountain in Lovingston, is releasing its first American Single Malt whisky on Sept. 1 in Virginia, Prelude: Courage & Conviction. Be the first to taste this distinctive, much-anticipated whisky by day tripping to the distillery’s visitor center or popping into the Barracks Road Virginia ABC store. This release is a sneak peek to the company’s flagship offering of Courage and Conviction which will hit shelves nationally in Spring 2020.
LEARN: Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters are hosting an informative demonstration,  PACKING 101: The Basics at on September 7 at 11:00 am. Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters approaches packing as an art and a skill. Learn essential packing tips and tricks of packing efficiently and keeping your suitcase organized at their Packing 101 class hosted by an in-house packing specialist. The exhibition will consist of a collection of three works of art, all measuring nine inches or smaller, from a carefully curated selection of artists. Based on the smashing popularity of last year’s exhibition, this one is guaranteed to be another success. Eighty-five artists will be included, primarily from Virginia and the surrounding region (you know we love that!), representing diverse styles, techniques and mediums. The theme for this year’s show is inspired by both Cabinets of Curiosities,  as well as the Paris Salons of the 19th Century. Each work of art is priced at $100, providing a very accessible introduction to contemporary art collecting. Stony Point Design is pleased to announce the Founding Merchants for The Dairy Market, Charlottesville’s new cutting-edge food hall set to open Spring 2020. Star Hill Brewery was announced a few weeks ago and now Angelica’s Kitchen, Chimm St., Take It Away and Eleva Coffee have come on board.
Angelica Jenkins, of Angelic’s Kitchen has been sharing her homemade soul food with Charlottesville for the last five years through her catering operation and her colorful food truck. Her signature speciality dishes will include fried fish that is dipped in her exclusive southern style breading and deep fried to perfection, crispy seasoned wings, homemade macaroni & cheese, collard greens seasoned with smoked turkey, candied yams, cornbread-style hush puppies, seasoned street corn, bold flavored barbecue chicken leg quarters and so much more.
Chimm St. is a homage to the delectable street food that prevails in Thailand, which their citizens enjoy for at least one meal a day. Thai food culture is all about customization and at the new Chimm St. food stall in the Dairy Market, chefs will craft meals that are reminiscent of the hustle and bustle of the street markets of Thailand. At Dairy Market, the menu will highlight this aspect of cuisine, share the communal experience and integrate the regional foods and flavors of Southeast Asia.
Take It Away has proudly served the Charlottesville and the University of Virginia community on the corner for 27 years, using all-natural meats and cheeses, and freshly baked breads. Customers can expect the usual crowd pleasers, like the legendary House Dressing, a blend of herbs, spices and whole grain mustard, which makes a sandwich from Take It Away unlike any other. Owner Tom Bowe is excited to offer a hot sandwich menu in the new location.
Brooklyn-based, Eleva Coffee, a coffee roasting company, will be the Dairy Market’s center hall farm-to-cup coffee company. Their motto is “Love Your Coffee, Make A Difference,” and their name is derived from the Spanish verb “to rise up.” With Eleva, owner Emilio Baltodano is aiming to offer coffee aficionados a positive and uplifting, yet affordable, coffee experience, while simultaneously helping to lift up the small farming communities that make great coffee possible.
Located in the historic Monticello Dairy Building in downtown Charlottesville, at 946 Grady Avenue, Dairy Market is the first food hall concept in Virginia’s Central Piedmont. At capacity, the Dairy will have 18 merchant stalls and 11,500 sq. ft. of exciting retail space. In addition, there will be 7,000 sq. ft. of unique event space and a large, leafy public plaza for outdoor enjoyment. We eagerly await the grand opening in the spring!

LOVE
We’ve fallen for all of the Old Whaling Co. products at Ivy Nursery. And as summer starts to draw to a close, we’re embracing their variety of delicious scents (personal fave: Seaweed + Sea Salt) that feel so beach-ey. They have bar soaps, bath bombs, body butters and roll-on perfumes. There’s even a mini body butter size that’s perfect for stowing in your bag or taking on your next jaunt. Pop on into Ivy Nursery to scoop up your next hostess gift, or better yet, a treat for yourself. *Photo by, Kate Gereer

TREAT
In their ongoing celebration of 20 years in business, Charlottesville Skin & Laser is pleased to offer a 20% discount on microblading services for eyebrows or permanent eyeliner.  Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup procedure where their licensed and professionally trained practitioner utilizes a specialized pen, drawing each hair onto the brow one by one. This precise and detailed process can enhance thin or over-plucked eyebrows or fill in gaps, giving you full, natural-looking results.  Permanent eyeliner is a technique where pigment is placed into the dermis on the upper eyelid and/or lower lash line. Pigment can also by placed between the eyelashes, which creates a visual effect of dark, thick, and lush lashes.   Head into Charlottesville Skin & Laser for a free consultation if you’re not sure if microblading or permanent eyeliner is right for you. This special is valid during the month of August. As always, you are welcome to take advantage of this offer and bank it (buy now and use later).

TRY
The last days of summer are the perfect time to try out the cotton candy hair trend. We talked to Kasey White, of KChair in The Coterie Suites, who has perfected this look for the scoop on how to keep this hot trend looking its best.   • Be sure to use a color safe shampoo and conditioner. Choose sulfate free, to ensure your cuticle stays tightly closed, so your beautiful color doesn't have the chance to seep out. • Coat your hair with coconut oil before swimming, it has a natural SPF of 6 which is perfect for your hair. Coconut oil will also act as a water repellent to prevent the pool chemicals and saltwater from stripping your color away. • Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! No one likes dry crunchy hair that won’t hold color! • Choosing a pastel color requires quite a bit of upkeep, so be sure to find the right stylist, like Kasey, who has expertise with these tones and will know all the tips and tricks. Call Kasey to book your appointment today. And don’t forget to tell her The Scout Guide sent you!  KChair | 1208 E. Market St., Suite 3 | 434-962-8395 | [email protected]
