Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission

Spearheading the restoration effort of the Columbia is the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission. They have been around for just over 45 years and in that time have made strides in their endeavor. In 1991, for example, they began salmon marketing. Four years later, the restoration plan was released and subsequently starting off; after 6 years, runs of chinook, steelhead and coho salmon returned. Fast forward to 2008, 3 tribes of the CRITFC joined with BPA signing the Columbia Basin Fish Accords. This agreement allotted $900 million to restoration efforts throughout the basin while the BPA obtained a 10-year guarantee of the generation of hydropower. Another victory came in 2011 when the Condit Dam was removed resulting in fish passage. Although progress was made throughout the 35 years from conception to 2012, the CRITFC still has work to do. The list is not exhaustive, however, it will take more than just the Commission doing the work; it is up to the surrounding communities and industries to make the changes as they are needed.

The list includes the following:

Reduce toxic contaminations

Increase natural spawning

Solve unchecked predation

Support treaties of U.S. and Canada

Combat looming cuts to federal funding

While the public can't take part in all of these, we must do what we can. Our biggest contribution would be to adopt better cleaning and/or disposing practices. If we can limit the amount of cleaning supplies, pesticides, weed killer, etc. and properly dispose of the containers, we can help rebuild the population.

Joseph Bogaard from the Save Our Salmon Coalition stated that as long as we provide them with "a healthy river, they will do the rest." If it is that simple, what is stopping us? It is not hard to slowly change products over to something more environment-friendly.
