Parts 1 & 2 of the Hanahaki prompt story can be found here. I probably need a title for this at some point.
Before that day, Ringabel had thought he would have had a knack for sensing when danger was afoot, just as he had a talent for piloting an airship. Part of having a rogue's charm. Apparently that idea had been completely wrong, and now the ship he'd been growing to like had been brought low and constrained to the inner sea, unable to help them reach Florem, because he had completely missed Edea's charming friend making a visit. The dark knight Alternis Dim had struck Tiz by surprise and broken the skystone to ground their group. "Really! You'd think with how long they've known each other, he would at least hear her out before breaking ships and punching people," Ringabel complained. "It would have been nice," Tiz agreed. Now that he'd had time to recover from the punch, his color was back to normal, though he winced every once in a while as they trudged toward the miasma woods that separated Ancheim from Florem. "He thought we'd kidnapped her though. And once she told him she was with us of her own free will, he really lost it." "Alternis has always been like that," Edea said blandly. "He tries to act stoic, but he couldn't keep a cool head unless he was risking frostbite." "And you have a passion to match," Ringabel mused. "I must have missed quite the row." "Excuse me?" Ringabel quickly raised his hands in surrender, though he didn't miss the slightest smile on Agnès' face, and he was a bit suspicious of how conveniently Tiz had to cough into his hand at that moment. "There's nothing wrong with having passion, is there? You were defending Tiz and Agnès!" She stared him down longer than he would have liked, but after a few seconds, Edea accepted it, turning back around and leading the way. "At any rate, I hope that's the last we see of him. But Alternis seemed to have other ideas, and he's known for his tenacity. I'd keep an eye out for him." "...To be honest, I'm still surprised you two are childhood friends," Agnès said quietly. "Some of the things he said were...quite harsh." Edea offered only a half-hearted shrug. Ringabel frowned. Just what had Alternis said? "Of course, he's only angry at me for how this might reflect on my parents. I couldn't have expected anything else from him." "Not concerned for your safety?" Ringabel said. "I would expect that, given his feelings." "What feelings? I told you, he got his flowers removed." "What? But, what does that have to do with..." Ringabel completely stopped in his confusion. Alternis loved Edea. He'd had Love's Languish, Hanahaki disease because she didn't reciprocate, and he was only cured because he'd had the flowers removed. Wasn't that what Edea had told him before? But nothing about that meant the man should no longer love her. Tiz made a small 'hm?', slowing in his steps as he looked between Ringabel and Edea, but it took the girl a couple more seconds before she stopped walking ahead. "Oh, I see...I suppose I didn't really explain well enough before. It's fairly common knowledge in Eternia." Ringabel couldn't see her face, as she remained facing forward, but he saw how her head turned down, her hand resting on her chest. "The surgery is to remove the flowers, but because they're the manifestation of emotions, the person loses those feelings too. It's apparently typical for people to be indifferent toward the former object of their affection afterward. Though, in Alternis' case..." She didn't seem to want to finish that thought, and Ringabel was too upset to indulge in curiosity and ask. "That's a very critical detail," he said, his throat tight. "It would be one thing if it simply cured people, but when it deprives them of their feelings--" "Of one feeling! One feeling that was making them miserable!" Now Edea did turn around, stomping her foot as she did. "You are suffering for some girl you don't even remember, don't tell me that's reasonable!" "It's you, I've told you, I know it is!" "You have no memory." "I do still remember that I have amnesia, funny enough. I may have no memory, but I have my heart, and I know, it's you." "And I don't love you." In the corner of one eye, Ringabel could see Tiz and Agnès having a small exchange between themselves and putting a few extra feet between the two of them and Edea and him. He supposed this was starting to seem like a fight, and he tried taking a step back himself, despite the pressure he felt building up in his chest. "I know you don't. But I have hopes you may in the future, and even if--" Edea was just not having it. "Ohh, no. No. I've heard the 'even if you don't' before, and it's not true. You have hopes. That's all. And I can tell you right now, I don't love you, I am not going to fall in love with you, and if you want to stop coughing up flowers, your choices are either moving on of your own accord, or getting the surgery to help you move on. It's those two. Your pick. Because I don't feel particularly attracted to shamelessly flirty men who lack common sense--" Ringabel took a deep breath. Or tried to. Between the thickness of the miasma in the air and the flowers tangling in his lungs, his breath caught, and Agnès looked sharply at him before stepping forward. "Edea, you two may have this discussion once we are clear of the woods, but not a moment sooner. Ringabel, ...save your breath and take care of yourself." "We've only restored one crystal's light!" Airy chimed in from Agnès' shoulder. "We don't have time for silly arguments!" Edea huffed an aggrieved sigh. "Even if Alternis hates me now, at least he can argue with me without coughing up flowers," she muttered. She'd clearly caught his trouble too, and Ringabel turned away from the others with shame burning his cheeks as he waited for his breathing to calm. She'd gotten him good with that unflattering description, and ...if she really saw him that way, perhaps it would be better to get the flowers removed, with a chunk of his heart besides. But to be indifferent to her? To hate her? The way she'd touched her chest while talking about the surgery's side effect...even though she played it off as a necessary consequence, he was fairly sure it bothered her that her childhood friend no longer liked her, even if he was in better health now. But he had to leave the matter alone for now. She was upset, and so was he. Only Tiz chattered, trying to restore a better mood in the group, and even his efforts petered out after they went nowhere. The group made the rest of their way through the miasma woods in relative silence.

That feeling when you’re sitting down, realizing it’s been almost three years... And still no new Bravely game. I just want to see Ringabel being a magnificent hero and doing cool planeswarden things. And also Rindea closure would be very nice. Maybe one day... Until then, I should clearly go digging for some good Bravely fanfics with Ringabel focus. And cute Rindea maybe. (As a side note, has anyone ever made a script of all the party chats? I feel like I missed some and it’d be a handy characterization reference.)

AND SUDDENLY, I WROTE A BUNCH MORE, AND THIS PART ENDED IN A SCENE I NEVER EXPECTED, AND DEAR GOD THEY DIDN'T EVEN GET OFF CALDISLA This is part 2 of the "Ringabel has hanahaki" request, I'm going to reiterate that I expect future parts to be faster, but given how this part is actually maybe less than half of what I first expected part 2 to be, I am not fully confident in that assessment Part 1 is here.
I always knew there was going to be a scene for Ringabel telling Edea his flowers were for her and Edea going first, no, second, you can get those out y'know. I just didn't expect it to end up there, but there it is!

The Little Things
I started writing this a week ago, and after a lot of ups and downs in trying to get it done… Here it is, I guess? Also I’m sorry all I can do is write right now. School and work continue to be very unkind to me and my health.
Pairing: Rindea
Summary: Ringabel thinks waking Edea up at 2am is a good idea. Edea, however, doesn’t feel the same way about it. Hugs are involved.
Word Count: 2743 Words
Additional Notes: Takes place post B2nd, but I kept spoilers limited to lightly implied BD spoilers. Even then, it might be hard to catch.
“Edea? Edea…”
It was pitch black when Edea opened her eyes. She was exhausted, and her limbs were sore from the previous day’s activities. Judging by how groggy she was, she had only been asleep a few hours, which was far less time than she would have liked. As her eyes tried to adjust to the light, she attempted to make sense of what was going on. Somebody had woken her up for some reason, and though she couldn’t be certain to as of why, the who was more than obvious.
“Ringabel, I was sleeping!” she hissed as she looked at a black mass that was lying next to her. It had been moving a second beforehand, but it had stopped as soon as she had spoken. A moment later, the mass moved closer, and Edea could just barely start to make out the features of her fiancé as it did so.
“I know you were asleep. That’s why I had to wake you,” Ringabel said as he inched his way over. “I wouldn’t be able to talk to you if you were still sleeping.”
Edea let out an annoyed huff. “I would have preferred if you had left me sleeping,” she complained while rubbing her now stinging eyes. Throwing his blanket over Edea, Ringabel made himself comfortable next to her.
“I know, I know, but I wanted to talk to you,” he told her as he reached for a strand of her hair before changing his mind. “I hope you’re not angry that I woke you.”
Edea blinked a few times as she tried to let her eyes adjust to the light. “What time even is it?” she asked before letting out a big yawn. “I feel like I haven’t even slept a wink.”
The bed shook slightly as Ringabel made a poor attempt at a shrug. “Two in the morning, maybe? I just got into bed a little bit ago, and I didn’t bother to check the time,” he explained. Muttering complaints about the time to herself, Edea rolled onto her stomach and crossed her arms over her pillow.
“You better have a good reason for waking me up then,” she grumbled as she rested her chin between her arms. She had closed her eyes again to keep them from stinging, but it was also causing her to doze back off. Ringabel, however, laid his head next to hers in order to wake her back up.
“Of course, Little Peahen. I wouldn’t wake you from your beauty sleep if it wasn’t important,” he mentioned as he draped his arm over her. Edea couldn’t tell if he was teasing or being serious, but she still didn’t appreciate the fact he had woken her up.
“It wasn’t beauty sleep, it was a warrior’s slumber,” she insisted with another grumble. “It ensures that I can still kick your butt when you decide to bother me in the middle of the night.”
Ringabel, seemingly unaffected by Edea’s tired threat, propped himself up with one arm and poked her cheek. “Or perhaps it was the eternal slumber of a fair maiden, only woken up by the sound of her true love’s voice?” he teased as he continued to poke. Annoyed, Edea swatted his hand away and turned her head towards him.
“What do you need?” she bluntly asked him. She had opened her eyes just enough to try and make his expression out, and he seemed to be… Frowning? She couldn’t be sure, as it was still too dark for her to make things out properly.
“You are angry at me, aren’t you?” Ringabel asked in response. Edea still couldn’t tell how he was feeling, but his voice didn’t sound very cheerful. Edea, however, was still too annoyed to point it out.
“You woke me up at 2 am,” she reminded him with the same blunt manner. “Now tell me what you need so I can go back to sleep.”
“I just wanted a hug, Edea,” Ringabel told her with a somewhat disappointed tone. “Is that too much to ask?”
Edea felt herself tense up. A hug!? He had woken her up because he wanted a stupid hug!? Seriously!? She should’ve kicked him out for waking her up for such a stupid thing! Ugh!
“Go to sleep, Ringabel,” she demanded as she rolled away from him. She wasn’t as angry as she could be, but she was definitely irritated. If it weren’t for how tired she was, she would have given him a good tongue lashing. Ringabel, however, scooted closer and placed his hand on her shoulder.
“Just one hug? Pleeeease?” he asked in a way reminiscent of a whining child. Edea scrunched her face in annoyance and turned her attention back to what she was pretty sure was Ringabel’s face.
“I said, go to sleep, Ringabel,” she demanded a second time; this time a bit harsher than the last. Normally she’d have no complaints giving him a small hug, but the fact he had woken her just for that had made her less than willing. Disappointed, Ringabel sighed and pulled the covers back over his head.
“Goodnight, Edea…” he mumbled to her before rolling to the other side of the bed and falling silent. She had no clue if he was actually trying to fall asleep, but he was at least letting her get some shut eye. Relieved, Edea made herself comfortable and let her head sink back into the pillow…
Ten minutes passed, and then twenty… By the time an hour had passed, Edea was still awake. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness by now, and enough moonlight was creeping in to make things more visible, though it wasn’t of much use to her. She was keeping her eyes squeezed shut to try and force herself to fall asleep, but she wasn’t having any luck. No matter how tired she was, she couldn’t help but feel restless as well. It was torture.
As Edea laid on her stomach and kept her eyes closed, she tried to think of ways to help her sleep. Kamiizumi had once told her the way to a perfect night’s sleep was clearing the mind, so she tried her best to change her way of thinking. She began to focus more on what was around her and less of what was in her head. The cold air on her cheeks… The warmth of the bed and blankets… The darkness of the room… The sound of crying?
Edea opened her eyes and turned her attention to the lump under the blankets that was her fiancé. Sitting up and reaching over, she lightly placed her on top of him and watched as he straightened out under the sheets. A moment later, Ringabel peered out from under the blankets. Though Edea couldn’t see his tears, she could still tell from his actions that he had been crying.
“D-do you need something, Edea?” he asked while poorly attempting to hide the fact he was upset. Concerned about her fiancé, Edea reached over to the top of his head and gently brushed her fingers through his hair.
“I heard you crying. What’s going on?” she asked as she continued to pull at the loose strands of hair. In attempts to avoid the conversation, Ringabel pulled the covers back over his eyes, but left enough room for Edea to continue playing with his hair.
“N-nothing is going on! E-everything is okay…” he tried to convince her before sniffling. Knowing it was an obvious lie, Edea pulled the covers back so she could see the entirety of Ringabel’s face.
“I know you’re upset, Ringabel,” she said as she moved her hand to his cheeks to wipe his tears. “Please tell me what’s wrong…”
Ringabel sniffled again. “R-really, Edea! It’s nothing!” he continued to insist. Displeased with Ringabel’s lying, Edea began to frown.
“Please don’t hide this from me, Ringabel,” she requested as she stroked his cheek with her thumb. “You don’t have to tell me everything, but at least tell me something.”
Ringabel was hesitant. “It’s… It’s just the depression…” he quietly admitted a moment later. He was trying to cover his face with the blanket again, yet Edea didn’t stop him. Instead, she laid back down next to him to comfort him.
“Do you want to talk about it?” she asked as she moved a bit closer. She knew better than to force Ringabel to talk, but it was good to ask anyway. She could feel Ringabel tense up.
“No, not really…” he told her as he placed his forehead against hers. “It’s a bit hard to explain…”
Edea put her hand back on Ringabel’s cheek. “Well, is there anything I can do to help?” she continued to ask. Even if he’d prefer to stay silent on the matter, she still wanted to find a way to make him feel better. Ringabel placed his hand on top of hers.
“…can you give me a hug?” he requested with a saddened tone. Edea felt her heart sink as she realized why Ringabel had asked for the same thing earlier in the night. He had just wanted somebody to comfort him… She felt terrible for ignoring the previous request now, but she wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Wrapping her arms around Ringabel, she gave him a big hug.
“I’m sorry, Ringabel. If I had known you were upset earlier I wouldn’t have said no…” she apologized before snuggling against him. Ringabel returned the hug and held Edea close.
“It’s okay, Edea… I can’t get upset with you for not knowing,” he assured her. Edea, however, still felt terrible for what had happened.
“I should have known… I need to pay better attention next time,” she said as a lump formed in her throat. She felt somewhat responsible for Ringabel’s well-being, even if she knew she could never magically fix things, and felt she had to be more attentive. Ringabel, on the other hand, still tried to assure her things were okay.
“Really, Edea. It’s okay. You’re helping me now and that’s what matters,” he told her before giving her a quick peck on the forehead. “Besides, it’s not always obvious when Anazel is bothering me.”
Edea blinked. “Anazel…?” she asked in confusion. “Ringabel… Did you name your depression?”
Ringabel shifted awkwardly. “Ah, well… It was my psychiatrist’s idea,” he began to explain. “He said if I tried to humanize my depression, it might help me cope in more… Healthier ways… So I gave it a name. Now every time I have a bad thought, I just think ‘shut up, Anazel!’ to try and help myself feel better.”
Edea laughed a bit. “I see. It’s definitely different,” she pointed out before laughing again. Ringabel didn’t seem to appreciate her comment though, as he began to once again frown.
“Is it really that funny?” he asked with a somewhat hurt tone. Edea started to feel bad for laughing, especially since that hadn’t been the idea she was trying to convey.
“No, I don’t think it’s funny. I’m laughing because I think it’s cute!” she tried to explain herself. It didn’t seem to be working, however, as Ringabel was still frowning at her.
“…so you think my depression is cute,” he told her with the same hurt tone. Edea realized her message had been completely lost now, and it didn’t help she wasn’t doing a good job of explaining it in the first place.
“No, no, not at all! I think the fact you’ve given it a name is a great idea!” she said in attempts to correct her mistake. “What I think is cute is how willing you are to do what it takes to get through this. It’s an endearing character trait.”
Thankfully, Edea’s words seemed to be having an effect. “Do you really think so?” Ringabel asked her with a slightly more happy tone. Edea scooted up and kissed him on the nose.
“I know so,” she said with the utmost confidence. She could feel Ringabel hug her tighter, and he kissed her on the cheek before suddenly pouting a bit.
“Well, I still don’t think ‘cute’ was the best word to use,” he told in a grumpy, yet also playful way. She could tell he was just teasing now and let out another small laugh.
“Then how about inspiring?” she suggested to him. Ringabel raised an eyebrow slightly and tilted his head as much as he could with it being against their pillow.
“So now you’re saying you laughed because you found it inspiring,” he pointed out to her. Edea realized he was right and that it sounded odd, so she tried to explain herself once more.
“How about this… I laughed because I love you, and seeing you have the courage to deal with your pain head on inspires me to keep smiling,” she began. “You make me happy, even if you’re hurting, and you can make me laugh even when you’re sad. It’s the little things that you do that make me love you… Like the fact you bite your thumb when you’re in deep thought, the little noise you make when you realized you’ve forgotten something, your enthusiastic gushing about airships that only you understand, and now the fact you gave your depression a name to help you stay strong… I love all of that about you.”
To Edea’s relief, Ringabel’s expression softened. “I like that explanation a lot better,” he said with a loving smile. Edea  could hear a bit of satisfaction in his voice, but also happiness. With finally being able to see the smile she fell in love with, however, Edea probably felt more satisfaction than he did.
“Good, now go back to bed,” she demanded with a playful tone. Though she no longer cared that Ringabel had woken her up, she was still feeling exhausted. Ringabel began to pout and squeezed her a bit tighter.
“But Edeaaaaa!” he whined as he nuzzled his way into the crook of her neck. Edea was ready to give him a deadpan stare, but it would have been impossible for him to see in his current position.
“I need my beauty sleep, don’t I?” she asked in a somewhat mocking tone. It had always amazed Edea how fast the two of them could go from being heartfelt to teasing, but as long as nobody had their feelings hurt it didn’t bother her. Ringabel, meanwhile, was still whining.
“Yes, but- I mean you’re always beautiful, but that’s not the point! I would like to say something too!” he said as he moved his head back next to hers. Edea could tell he was trying to be sincere, so there was no point in trying to stop him.
“What do you want to say?” she continued to ask before yawning. Ringabel was still holding her close and looked her in the eyes before speaking.
“I love the fact your smile can brighten my day, and that you twitch your nose when you smell good food. The fact you love to listen to my poems and can even recite some by heart, and the freckles on your cheeks… These little things and so much more are why I love you,” he softly told her. Edea felt her cheeks turning red and buried her face in her pillow out of embarrassment. Even if they were engaged now, Ringabel still had his ways to charm her.
“G-go to sleep, Ringabel!” she loudly mumbled into the pillow. Ringabel let out a laugh and kissed her on the temple, all while keeping her close to him.
“Goodnight, Edea,” he whispered in her ear before relaxing next to her. Edea felt herself relax as well and turned herself back towards Ringabel.
In the comfort of Ringabel’s arms, Edea began to doze. He was warm and comfortable, and it would definitely make falling asleep easier. Following Kamiizumi’s advice once again, Edea tried to clear her mind. She focused on her breathing, Ringabel’s heartbeat, how nice his arms felt… She felt herself drifting off within moments of closing her eyes… Until Ringabel poked at her cheek again.
“Hey, Edea?” he asked in attempts to get her attention. Edea kept her eyes shut and didn’t bother getting angry. She was too tired for it.
“Mmm…?” she mumbled just loudly enough for Ringabel to hear her. Ringabel placed his forehead against hers once more and gently whispered to her.
“You give the best hugs…”

Scrapped Fics
So over the past year I’ve managed to start and post quite a few fics, but last night I realized I have a good chunk that were started but never finished. While some have a chance of me going back to them, others are so old I’ve pretty much abandoned them. Since some of these have no way of seeing the light of day, I’ve decided to share snippets of these unfinished works. I’ll list the working title (if there is one), the main pairing, the current word count the fic was at (not of the snippet itself), and any reason it was dropped. I won’t be sharing the entirety of what I have written though, and the snippets will be my personal favorite parts! There are three Tiznes fics, one Arrior family fic, five Rindea fics, four Lee family fics, two Yewnolia fics, and one that wasn’t pairing focused but had mentions of Rindea and Altdea!
Also as a reminder, a lot of these are older, so the writing may not be as good as my current stuff! These are also completely unedited as a warning, so they won’t be pretty either.
Major spoilers for both games below the cut! You have been warned!
Untitled (Companion fic to “A ‘Cure’ for a Broken Heart”)
Pairing: Tiznes
Word Count of Actual Fic: 3150 Words
Reason Dropped: Struggling to find ideas to connect plot points
“Agnès, you need to talk to me! I’m here to help you!” Tiz yelled into the pendant. He wasn’t sure if she could hear him over her own screams, and for a moment he thought she was in serious danger. It came as a relief when she finally responded to him a few seconds later.
“T-thunder! T-there’s so much thunder!” Agnès cried out. Tiz could now see that she was sitting on the floor and rubbing away her tears, and it upset him to see her in so much distress. He wished he could hold her in her arms and tell her it was okay.
“Huh? Is that what the problem is? I didn’t think a storm would set her off like this,” Yew mentioned while finally getting off the floor and sitting on his bed. Tiz looked over and nodded his head.
“Agnès doesn’t like the sound of thunder. Despite all the dry thunderstorms near the temple, she’s never gotten used it. Something about it just really upsets her,” Tiz explained. He was still worried about her, but knowing it was just thunder slightly eased his worries. As long as he calmed her down, everything would be okay.
“Well what are we supposed to do, sir? We can’t leave her like this!” Yew pointed out. Agnès was still wailing about the thunder through the pendant, and Tiz could clearly make out the loud booms between her sobs. It sounded like it they were being hit by the worst part of the storm.
“Well of course we’re not going to leave her like this,” Tiz told Yew while crossing his arms. He was trying to think of a fast solution that wouldn’t require a lot of work.
“Talking to her would probably be simple enough! With the both of us, she’ll be calm in no time!” Yew suggested with much enthusiasm. Tiz knew Yew just wanted to help, but Tiz didn’t think that plan would work.
“It takes a lot more than talking to snap her out of this,” Tiz mentioned while continuing to ponder possibilities. He admittedly already had one in mind, but if he wanted to go through with it he’d need Yew to leave the room.
“How about we read her some poems? Tell her some funny jokes? Oh, or I can tell her one of my favorite stories about a princess who ran away from home!” Yew continued to suggest. Tiz, however, just dismissed all of Yew’s suggestions.
“Just leave it to me, Yew. I’ll have her calmed down in no time,” Tiz assured the younger boy while sitting down on his own bed. “You, on the other hand, should go get some ice. You took quite the fall off your bed, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you had some bumps and bruises forming.”
“O-oh no, sir! I feel fine!” Yew tried to convince Tiz to no avail. “I’d rather stay here with you and help you calm her Holiness down!”
“I don’t think you’re telling the truth about being fine, Yew. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, so get yourself some ice,” Tiz told him with a slightly demanding tone. Yew seemed absolutely baffled by the sudden change in demeanor.
“B-but, sir!” Yew stuttered with confusion and disappointment. “I can help too if you let me! I promise I won’t cause any trouble!”
“You want Agnès to stop crying, don’t you? Then you should stop stalling, get yourself some ice, and leave me to work,” Tiz advised while tapping his fingers. He knew if he looked impatient enough, he could get Yew to leave faster. Tiz felt kind of bad for it, but there wasn’t much else he could do. He needed Yew out of the room now if Agnès was to be calmed down.
“Oh, fine.. But I won’t be gone long, sir! I’ll rush back as soon as I can! Just you wait!” Yew assured him while jumping up. Tiz was a bit worried the kid would just hurt himself even more at this rate.
“Just be careful, okay? If you’re too fast you’ll just hurt yourself again,” Tiz warned while turning his attention back to the pendant. Agnès hadn’t grown any quieter, and he felt terrible for temporarily turning his attention away from her, but he had to get Yew to leave the room. He hoped she wasn’t angry with him.
“I won’t hurt myself, I promise!” Yew said as he headed for the door. “You and her Holiness have nothing to worry about!”
Yew’s confidence didn’t make Tiz feel any better, but before Tiz could say anything else, Yew had left the room and was making his way down the hall. Tiz could hear Yew trip right outside the door and it just concerned him about the boy’s safety even more. Tiz had more important things to deal with right now, however, so he couldn’t spend his time babysitting Yew. Agnès was Tiz’s top priority, and he wasn’t going to let Yew change that. Tiz figured Yew would be fine though… He hoped.
Once Tiz heard Yew scrambled back into his feet and down the hall, he turned his attention back to Agnès.  She was still on her knees and trembling, making her look like a scared lamb that had been backed into a corner by an ox. He could hear the rain banging against the window more clearly now, and thunder caused the entire room to shake. Agnès was hugging herself for comfort, but the shaking had obviously terrified her more. Tiz had to do something before one of the guards came to the room and yelled at her for all the noise she was making.
“It’s going to be okay, Agnès. I’m here for you,” Tiz told her with a gentle tone. “Just listen to the sound of my voice. I promise everything is going to be okay.”
“I-it’s so loud, Tiz! I’ve tried everything to drown it out!!” Agnès cried out between loud sobs. For a second, Tiz tried to reach out to comfort her, only to remember there wasn’t any possible way he could hold her hand. It made his heart ache.
“Deep breaths, Agnès… Deep breaths. If you don’t breathe you’re going to get lightheaded,” he told her with the same gentle tone. He saw she was trying her best to listen, but it sounded more like she was hyperventilating than relaxing. If she wasn’t careful, she might pass out.
Tiz normally didn’t have any trouble calming Agnès down, but their current situation was making things a bit harder for Tiz. There had admittedly been one time before where it had been just as difficult, but that had been because he had only just learned Agnès didn’t like thunder. It had been during their first journey, when they were on their way to the Eisen region in the Eschalot. The ship’s sky stone had been smashed to pieces, so their only option had been to sail across the vast ocean. Unfortunately, a storm hit almost immediately after they had entered open seas, and they had no choice but to sail through it. It was a little after the thunder and lightning started that Tiz first saw how bad Agnès’ fear was.
Airy had decided to sleep through the storm, which had left Agnès all alone at first. Meanwhile, Ringabel was piloting the harsh waters and Edea was fighting off seasickness, so when Agnès started screaming, Tiz was the only one who could run to her side. He found he curled up in the corner of the room she and Edea shared, where she had wrapped herself in a blanket and covered her ears. Tiz quickly rushed to her side to ask what was wrong, but she clung to him as soon as he knelt down to talk to her.
“P-please! M-make the thunder go away!” she had desperately begged him while continuing to cling. Tiz had been caught off guard by her request, and at first he had no idea what he should do to help her. He had never been afraid of thunder himself, and he hadn’t really know anyone else who was. He remembered, however, that when he was younger, he had been afraid of the dark, and to calm him down during the dark, winter nights, his mother would sing a lullaby that had been passed down through her family for generations. He thought that perhaps if he sang the same song for Agnès, it would help her in the same way it had helped him…
And he had been right.
The song had not only been enough to calm Agnès down, but also enough to make her fall asleep in his arms, much to Tiz’s embarrassment. Even though it had been a lullaby, he hadn’t expected the song to put her to sleep too, so he was at a bit of a loss on what to do. He decided that carefully moving Agnès to her bed was his best option, but before he could, Edea entered the room and began to tease the two when she saw them bundled together. Tiz quickly had to shush her to avoid waking Agnès, and once Edea realized Agnès was sleeping, she apologized and went over to assist Tiz in getting Agnès into her bed. Thankfully, they were able to do so without waking her.
At first, Tiz hadn’t realized how often of an occurrence this was going to become. It had come as a surprise to him when she asked him to sing to her again during the next storm they were caught in, and once more during the storm after that. By the fourth storm though, he had realized how much she had began to rely on him, and every storm thereafter he would sing the lullaby without her needing to ask. Agnès had become the most important person in his life by that point, so he was willing to do whatever he could to keep her happy and feeling safe. His singing had become an important part of this, so he had promised her he would continue to sing to her until the day he no longer could.

The Stars Above (A companion fic to “Smile for the Camera”)

“The stars really are a mysterious thing, aren’t they? No matter where you come from or what you call them, they’re something familiar to everyone…” Agnès mused as she looked out at the ocean. Though the water was dark, she could clearly see the reflection of the stars and moon on the rippling surface. For a second, she thought she saw something fall out of the sky.
“Look, Agnès! Shooting stars!” Tiz shouted in delight as he tried to get up, though he quickly stopped when he remembered what had happened to his ankle. Agnès snapped her attention back to the sky, and sure enough, dozens of shooting stars were streaming across the sky.
Agnès watched in admiration as the stars continued to fall. Off in the distance, she could hear her friends talking amongst themselves as they wandered out to see the view, which they seemed to be enjoying as well. She hadn’t remembered hearing anything about a meteor shower, so seeing this one felt like it was truly a blessing. On such a clear night too… It almost felt magical. Though Agnès had much of her attention focused on the sky now, she couldn’t help but notice when Tiz clasped his hands together as if he were going to recite a prayer.
“What are you doing, Tiz?” Agnès asked as she looked over at him. He seemed to be concentrating on something, but she had no idea what it could have been on. The stars, perhaps?
“I’m trying to talk to Til and my parents,” he told her without moving an inch. “There’s a legend in Norende that says when people die, they’re reborn as stars in the sky. It’s believed that shooting stars are the departed’s way of trying to communicate with their loved ones, and if you’re lucky, you can hear them if you try and talk to them. I had always thought that maybe… Just maybe… If I tried to talk to them on a night like this, I could… I could talk to them one last time…”
“Tiz…” was all Agnès could bring herself to say. The dead communicate through shooting stars? That must have been the reason Tiz had become so desperate to go on this trip. He must have known that there was going to be a meteor shower, and wanted to talk with his family… It must have also been the reason he had run off without a word. He must have thought it was somebody from his family calling out to him…
Agnès watched as Tiz started his prayer. “Mom? Dad? Til? Are you there…?” he asked with a bit of shakiness in his voice. He sounded upset and desperate, and Agnès understood why. The death of his entire family wasn’t something he would fully get over. Agnès gave him a hug to comfort him.
“Keep going,” Agnès gently encouraged as she rested her chin on his shoulder. “I’m sure they want to hear from you as much as you want to hear from them…”
Tiz nodded his head. “It’s been awhile since we last talked, hasn’t it? …A-Agnès and I are married now! It’ll be two years come this spring..! We run the farm together too, and we’re managing to get by! I take care of the animals, and she takes care of the crops… And we both have jobs on the side! Did you know Agnès is great at sewing? She’s working part-time as a seamstress because of it, right where mom’s shop used to be… And I’m a Knight of Caldis and Captain of the Norende division! It can be hard balancing the two, but we make it work! Oh, and you know my friend Edea? She’s Grand Marshal now! Ringabel finally came back too, so he’s been helping her run Eternia for the past few months. And you remember Yew? That 19-year-old kid that kept calling me “Sir”? He’s twenty-two now, and the Captain of his own division of knights! He’s grown a lot since I first met him and even gotten himself a fiancée! She’s quite strange if you ask me, but he loves her more than anything else…!” Tiz rambled while holding back a few tears. Agnès stayed by his side and quietly hummed in order to keep him calm.
The two sat and watched the meteor shower as Tiz waited to hear a response. The tide was starting to rise higher, which meant they only had a bit of time left before they had to go back to the airship. Tiz, however, seemed to pay no attention to the rising tides and waited patiently for a response from his family. As more time passed though, it became clearer to both of them that nothing was going to happen. Agnès hugged Tiz tighter when she felt him slump over in sadness.
“You did what you could, Tiz, and even if they didn’t respond, I’m sure they still heard you,” Agnès told him before continuing to hum. Much to her surprise, Tiz managed to look over at her with a smile on his face, albeit a few tears falling down his cheeks.
“You really think so?” Tiz asked as he returned Agnès’ hug. “I knew the chances of something happening were slim, but I still wanted to try anyway…”
Agnès nodded her head. “I’m absolutely certain that they heard you. Perhaps in time, they’ll respond in their own special way…” she tried to assure Tiz.
“What about you, Agnès? Is there anybody you want to try talking to?” Tiz suddenly asked, catching her a bit off guard. Was there somebody she wanted to talk to…? Of course there was, but…
Agnès let out a long sigh and brought her hands hands close to her chest. “Olivia… I wish I could talk to Olivia,” she admitted as she looked down. There was a heavy feeling forming in her heart, and it was no doubt the grief she felt over Olivia’s death stirring up again. Though it had been six years since Olivia’s passing, just like the pain Tiz felt over his family, Agnès’ pain over losing Olivia would never truly go away. It hurt just thinking about it.

“Tiz, are you doing alright? You’re starting to shiver again…” Agnès pointed out while snuggling against Tiz’s jacket. Being made of sheep’s wool, it was a bit itchy, but it was definitely warmer than the air around them.
“R-remind me when we get there to tell Edea to implement better heating systems into these things,” Tiz requested through chattering teeth. His cheeks were turning pink from the cold, so Agnès gave him one of her many scarves to help warm him up and giggled.
“I’ll make sure to do that, dear,” she assured him as she adjusted the scarf. It was her own handiwork and was made specifically for this trip, and she thought the sheep patches she had put on it was quite suiting. A ram, a ewe, and a lamb… It was perfect.
“H-how are you holding up?” Tiz asked before covering his mouth with the scarf he was given. His teeth were still chattering a bit, but it seemed to be helping him warm up. As long as it helped Tiz out, Agnès didn’t mind sacrificing a bit of her own warmth.
“You’re doing a fine job keeping me warm, Tiz,” she told him before straightening up a bit and becoming a bit more stern, “but it would be unacceptable if you kept sacrificing your own warmth for mine!”
Tiz let out a sheepish laugh and rubbed the back of his head. He sounded a bit muffled through the scarf she had put on him. “I’m sorry, Agnès! I just think at a time like this, it’s more important for you to be warm! If anything were to happen to you-”
Agnès pulled Tiz’s scarf down and placed a finger on his lips before could finish. “I’m fine, Tiz. You don’t need to keep worrying about me,” she reassured him while smiling. Tiz nodded his head slightly, but Agnès could tell he was still a little bit anxious. She moved her finger and allowed him to speak.
“Can you at least promise me you’ll tell me if you start getting too cold?” he asked while readjusting his scarf. Tiz had always been stubborn about Agnès’ well being, and their current situation probably wasn’t making things easier on him.
“If anything goes wrong, you’ll be the first person I tell,” she promised before covering her face back up with her own scarves. The air was still cold, but it had become a bit more bearable than before. That was a sure sign they were almost to the city.
“Just a bit longer… I’m sure you must be excited to see Edea, especially since it’s been a few months,” Tiz mentioned in what seemed like an attempt to distract himself from his worries. His fingers were a bit fidgety, so Agnés took his hands and tried to warm them up with her own.
“It’s been a lot longer than I hoped. Between Magnolia being gone during her own birthday and me falling ill around mine, we haven’t been able to see each other since the beginning of the year,” Agnès mumbled with obvious disappointment. “I just hope she doesn’t hurt herself when she finally gets to see me.”
Tiz gave her a smile and intertwined his fingers with hers. “She’s definitely going to be excited. I mean, why wouldn’t she be? I bet she’ll trip just by trying to reach you before the others do!” Tiz joked. His smile became more of a grin, and Agnès felt herself starting to smile a bit as well.
“I’m sure if something like that happened, Ringabel would throw himself under her so she wouldn’t get hurt,” Agnès suggested with a bit of a laugh. Tiz’s grin grew wider, and he put his forehead against hers.
“We’ll just have to see when we get there,” Tiz told her before moving his head and kissing Agnès on the forehead. She figured he was just as excited as she was to see their friends again, since he had been waiting just as long as she had. Feeling a bit anxious about the meeting, Agnès looked down.
“Hopefully we land soon. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to stay in the air,” she muttered before swallowing and leaning against Tiz. She was starting to feel a bit queasy, but she wasn’t sure if it was from the anxiousness or something else. Either way, she wanted to be back on the ground as soon as possible.
“We’re almost to the end of the mountains, so we should be preparing to land any minute now,” Tiz told her while rubbing her back. Agnès lifted her head a bit and could indeed see the end of the mountain range, but instead of comforting her it only made her more anxious and upset her stomach more. She thought she had passed this problem…

“…so how was school this week?” Tiz asked in attempts to start a conversation. Theo didn’t look at him, and instead continued to keep his eye on the sheep walking up and down a hill. He seemed a bit hesitant.
“It was good, I guess,” Theo answered after a few seconds of awkward silence. “I learned a lot of stuff, and the homework wasn’t hard. Why do you ask?”
“I just wanted to know how things were going is all. You spend a lot of time there, so it wouldn’t be good if you weren’t enjoying yourself,” Tiz explained. Though the silence was gone, the awkwardness he was feeling wasn’t. He shouldn’t have been feeling this way around his own son, but he chalked it up to nerves getting to him.
“Well, I like my teacher, she’s really nice,” Theo mentioned before going quiet again.Tiz wasn’t really sure how a conversation like this could help his problem, but it wouldn’t do him any good if he didn’t keep it up.
“What about your classmates?” Tiz asked while taking a quick peek at the sheep. Quite a few of them were grazing together, but there was one, black sheep that seemed to be eating alone. Tiz couldn’t help but notice it was the one Theo had been eyeing.
The only reaction Tiz got out of Theo was a shrug. The 10-year-old didn’t seem to be interested in answering the question, and instead continued to look at the lone, black sheep down below. Tiz didn’t want the two of them to fall back into an awkward silence, but it was difficult if Theo wasn’t going to carry on the conversation. Theo had most definitely inherited his quiet nature from Agnès, but even Agnès was never this quiet. At this rate, they’d be stuck sitting with only the noise of the sheep and the breeze to sway away the awkwardness.
“Do you like the sheep?” Tiz asked in another attempt to start up a conversation. This time around though, Theo seemed a little less hesitant to respond, but still came off as being distant.
“Sheep are soft and fluffy, and they make good pillows,” Theo mentioned while moving his feet. “They don’t ask a bunch of questions and just go wherever there’s food… Kind of like my little sisters.”
Tiz laughed and patted the top of Theo’s head. “They do like to eat a lot of food, don’t they? Perhaps it’s just because they’re big in numbers, so we can’t keep up,” Tiz told Theo with a smile. Finally looking at his father, Theo nodded his head.
“They probably get it from you, daddy. You always eat more than mommy and I combined,” Theo pointed out to him. For a second, Tiz was taken aback, but he knew Theo was probably right.
“You and your mother eat like sparrows, you know,” Tiz teased. “You’re a growing boy though, and if you expect to keep growing you need to start eating more.”
Theo puffed out his cheeks in protest. “When I grow up, I’m going to be big and strong! All the other shepherds are going to be jealous because I’ll be able to protect the sheep better than any of them!” Theo complained. Tiz let out another laugh and rustled his son’s already unruly hair. He was glad to see him a bit more energetic.
“So you’re dead set on becoming a shepherd, are you?” Tiz asked with a piqued interest. “I had always assumed you were going to follow your mother’s footsteps and work as a seamster in the same shop as her.”
“Nuh-uh! I’m going to be a shepherd just like you, daddy!” Theo loudly declared, much to Tiz’s surprise. The sudden noise had apparently caught the attention of a few sheep too, but they quickly went back to grazing without a second thought.
“I’m sure you’ll make a fine shepherd, Theo,” Tiz told his son before smiling. Theo gave a big grin in return, but that slowly turned into a frown as he looked back down at the sheep.

It was late.
Ringabel knew this of course, but that was because he was the one stuck awake at this god awful hour. He wasn’t sure how late it was, but it was definitely an hour in which he would rather be sleeping than staring at the top of his bed. He had been awake for at least an hour now, and the entire time he had just been watching the moonlight creep across the room as it got later and later. Perhaps it was feelings of anxiety that had woken him, or maybe uncertainty about what his life had in store for him. Either way, it didn’t change anything that had happened during the day…
He and Edea were now married, and they had their whole lives to look forward to.
The wedding hadn’t been a very big one, and neither had been the party. They hadn’t wanted to make it into a big event, since there were some dangers to be considered when the Grand Marshall was getting married. There had been some hiccups, of course, but that was to be expected with the company they had. Thankfully, a lecture from Braev and Kamiizumi on the difficulties of raising children and a sudden outburst from Einheria when some guards showed up unannounced were the only interruptions they had during the day. Other than that, it had been perfect, and everything had gone as smoothly as they could have hoped.
Though he and Edea were planning to go to a small village near the city of Florem for their honeymoon, they were spending a few days in Eternia beforehand. He didn’t mind though, as he was happy anywhere as long as Edea was sleeping by his side. He took a moment to glance over at her; she was curled up next to him and had stolen most of the blankets during her sleep. That was something Ringabel was used to though, since they had shared their bed many nights prior to this one. Their bed… It felt nice to call it that.
Edea seemed to be in a deep sleep, as she was drooling all over the pillow and had hair falling into her mouth. She had always been a heavy sleeper compared to Ringabel, and quite the dreamer too. He figured all of the drooling was as a result of her having some dream about the buffet that had been prepared for the wedding, which even he agreed was mouthwatering. As cute as she looked though, Ringabel didn’t think it was a good idea to let her almost swallow her own hair. Ever so gently, he brushed it away from her mouth and over her shoulders.
Unfortunately, this also managed to wake Edea.
“Why …why aren’t you sleeping, Ringabel…?” she slowly asked before letting out a big yawn. She was obviously a bit groggy from being woken up, and he felt bad for having done it.
“And why are you awake?” he asked in response with a quiet voice. Edea gave him a half-asleep glare before rolling her eyes and yawning again.
“You know why, Mr. Insomniac…” she told him while rubbing her eyes. Along with being obviously groggy, she was also very, very grumpy.
“That’s Mr. Amnesiac to you,” he teased a bit while brushing away another strand of her hair, “and I was having a bit of trouble sleeping, so I’ve been laying here thinking.”
“Thinking about what…?” she asked as she sleepily blinked. She clutched onto the blankets and still didn’t seem to realize she was hogging all of them. Ringabel didn’t mind though.
“Many things, really. Our honeymoon, all the gossip about the Grand Marshall marrying her general, the fact I’m laying here naked and freezing because I have no blanket,” he explained with a raised eyebrow. Edea blinked for a second before realizing what he was getting at.
“Oh, sorry… I’m still half asleep,” she apologized while throwing part of their blankets back over to him. Ringabel smiled and moved closer to give her a peck on the nose.
“It’s alright, Mrs. Lee. I’d rather I be the one freezing than you,” he told her before draping an arm over her. Edea wasn’t really awake enough to do much, so all she really did was move a bit closer to him before speaking again.
“You make it sound like I’m my mother when you call me that,” she complained slightly. Ringabel understood the comparison Edea was trying to make, but that really didn’t change things.
“It’s who we are now though, Edea,” Ringabel reminded her with a wide grin. “The beautiful and strong Mrs. Edea Lee and the handsome and intelligent Mr. Ringabel Lee.”
“Legally, you’re Alternis Ringabel Lee, so technically you’re wrong,” she pointed out in attempts to mess with him. Ringabel’s grin turned into more of a frown, but he knew Edea was right.
“You don’t have a problem with my name though, do you?” he asked her. Edea moved her head up a bit and gave him an odd look.
“Of course not, silly…”

Thu-thump… Thu-thump…
When Edea woke up, she had no idea what time of day it was. There were signs of it being early, as her room was quiet and still, and not a peep could be heard from the outer hall. The sun, however, was shining in as if it was the later hours of the morning, and Edea had to cover her face with a pillow to block it out. Yet if it had truly been later, the hustle and bustle of the fortress’ staff would have easily been heard. No matter how hard she tried to listen though, the only thing she could hear was the faint beating of her own heart.
Edea was still a bit groggy, so she was having a bit of difficulty waking up. She had a long day beforehand, and she had stayed up late into the night for one reason or another. The grogginess was making it a bit difficult for her to remember the details perfectly, and everything seemed like a mushy mess in her memories. She wondered if her grogginess was affecting her perception of time too, since it would at least explain why she couldn’t tell the time. Trying to force herself to wake up, Edea began to retrace the steps of what had happened in her mind.
Yesterday had been her 24th birthday, and she was certain of that. She had also been the Grand Marshall for three years now, so there had been quite a few important figures that were going to be coming to her party too. The morning had started pretty normal, and she remembered talking to somebody, but she wasn’t certain who. Kamiizumi, perhaps? Whoever it was, the conversation apparently hadn’t been important to remember all of the details. She must have been too busy with party preparations to really notice what they had been talking to her about.
She remembered that Yew and Magnolia had arrived next and that before Edea even had a chance to open their gift (which ended up being a very well crafted blade), they had to run off to meet Tiz and Agnès. The two of them had flown in from Caldisla, and they had brought Edea a new set of cotton blankets, the same she was using now, and sweets from the finest bakery in Norende. They spent the day talking about a variety of things, such as the newly established Eternian Airship Lines and the plans for Yew and Magnolia’s wedding, but before long they headed back to the fortress Edea called home. The journey hadn’t taken them too long, and the party had yet to start by the time they returned. A few important figures, however, had arrived while they were gone, and Edea quickly rushed off to greet them.
The party itself wasn’t anything special. Her parents had flown in a few days prior in order to help prepare for it, but despite its extravagances, it still felt bland to Edea. The entire time she was there, she didn’t feel she had really paying attention to what was going on around her. People tried talking to her, wishing her a happy birthday, but she tuned out most of what had been said to her. At some point, she must have remembered she needed to do something, as she left her own party to seek shelter in her own room.
Edea had gone back to her room for a reason though, she just knew it. Yes, it had to do with the person she had talked to earlier in the morning. She had promised she’d talk to them that night since it had been too difficult to talk in the early morning, and they had planned to meet in her room. When she realized it how late it had gotten, she rushed back to her room in order to meet them. Upon entering her room, she could see Alternis standing and waiting for her near a window…
No.. Wait, no no no… It hadn’t been Alternis!

“So what are you painting?” Edea asked as she stared at a blank spot on the wall. She had given Ringabel the freedom to paint whatever he wanted on her back, so she didn’t know what was going on in his head. A second later, she heard him tapping his brush against a bowl before letting out a yelp when she suddenly felt a cold rag on her back.
“I’m just wiping off some extra paint. It’ll only be a moment,” Ringabel told her as he scrubbed a small section of her back. The water somehow managed to be colder than the paints, and it definitely didn’t make her feel any more comfortable. Ringabel didn’t seem to notice though, as he only continued to work while he answered her question. “As for what I’m painting, I want it to be a surprise,” he explained. “I can, however, tell you that it’s a painting of something that fits your personality well.”
Edea snorted. “So I guess you’re painting a peahen then? You could be a little more creative than that. Just because you like to liken yourself to peafowl, it doesn’t automatically make me one too,” she bluntly stated as she turned her head to catch a glimpse of Ringabel. Much to her surprise, he was laughing and shaking his head instead of acting offended.
“Now Edea, don’t jump to conclusions! I think my chosen subject is far more fitting than a peahen, even if you did fall for my charms in a similar manner, and you’ll be quite happy with the final results,” Ringabel said in a manner similar to teasing, though he seemed quite sincere. Edea, however, was still annoyed by the comment.
“Can it, Ringabel,” she grumbled as her face heated up. Though she couldn’t deny that he had charmed his way into her heart, there was much more to their relationship than that. Ringabel never passed up an opportunity to show Edea affection, and she allowed him to enjoy the simple pleasures of life he had always been denied. They had also shared quite a few intimate moments together too, so she hated when their relationship was chalked down to nothing more than charm and admiration.
“Did I say something wrong?” Ringabel asked as he picked up his paintbrush again. Edea rolled her eyes and sighed before going back to staring at the blank wall. There was no use lecturing Ringabel at the moment, especially since he had only been joking, and felt it was better just to ignore it for now.
“Just… How much longer is this going to be? I’m freezing, and being partially naked isn’t helping,” Edea complained in response. For Ringabel to actually paint on her back in the first place, she had to take everything off of her torso. Though she was allowed to continue wearing her shirt, she had to pull it over her shoulders and let it sit as Ringabel worked. Shivering again, she listened as he sloshed his brush around in the water and anticipated for him to start painting again.
“You can’t rush art, Edea,” he reminded her as he dried his brush slightly and dipped it in some more paint. “I’m just now getting to the main colors now that my base is done.”
“Can you at least let your paints warm up a bit more?” she asked as she tensed up. She tried her best to not yelp when Ringabel placed the freezing paintbrush onto her lower back and dragged it up along her spine.

The most eye catching thing for Edea was the amount of muscle Ringabel actually had. Though he used to flaunt his abs whenever he used the thief asterisk, and their friends had seen them along with his arms during one particular beach trip, Edea was the only one who could admire them as she pleased. He was a fast and strong runner, with the leg muscles to prove it, and his training as a knight had sculpted his abs, arms, and back into what they were today. He was bulkier than most people were aware of, but she could still take him down with her own strength and sheer willpower.
After that came his scars. Many of them had come from battles, but a specific set of marks on his right side and left arm had been received as a child. Ringabel didn’t like to talk about them, but she knew how he has received them. He had been attacked on the streets of Florem and almost killed, but he had miraculously been able to escape and nurse his wounds. They were the easiest to see, as red tattoo ink had been placed over them in the shape of claw marks.
The claw marks weren’t the only tattoos on his body, as his arms and parts of his back were covered in scales and various designs. Before he had regained his memories, he had hidden them from view, but Edea had caught a glimpse of them on accident. He had told her he had wanted to get rid of them, but after he regained his memories he had changed his mind. He had told her they actually symbolized something important, and that as long as he wanted to protect her, he would have them. Even now, the scales twisted around his body into mesmerizing shapes that fascinated her.
All these details were lying right next to her, barely covered by the blanket they had been sharing. Ringabel’s chest moved with every small breath, and his bangs would move each time his face twitched. The scars were barely visible with the dull light, but his tattoos were dark and easy to see. Then there was his eyes… His tired looking eyes. Though she couldn’t see them as he slept, she knew they would still be there when he woke up.

Broken Glass
Falling Tears
A pain that only he can know
Edea sat with her arms wrapped around Ringabel as blood dripped onto the floor. His hands had deep cuts running along them, and a pool of red was forming on the floor beneath them. Glass shards were scattered everywhere, and a few small pieces had cut Edea’s feet. On the wall above them, a mirror frame sat with nothing inside of it. The only thing heard was a deafening silence.
It had all happened in a moment, and everything had moved in a blur. The sound of shattered glass, the smell of blood, and the sight of Ringabel hunched on the floor. Edea felt the world swirling around her, and her first reaction had been to drop to Ringabel’s side. Her mind was in a panic but she knew she had to find out what had happened. Taking a look around her had led her to a quick conclusion though.
Ringabel had punched the mirror, shattering the glass into dozens of pieces. He had felt sorrow and rage upon looking at his reflection, and without thinking he had destroyed it with one swift motion. It had its consequences though, and his hand was now covered in what looked like crimson tears. He winced when Edea had touched it and refused to let her bandage it. He wanted the pain to continue, and Edea could do nothing about it.
“Who am I, Edea…?” Ringabel asked as he stared down at his bleeding fingers. Edea kept him in her embrace, keeping him safe from more pain.
“You’re Ringabel… That’s who you are…” she gently whispered to him. Her feet stung, but she knew she could not compare it to the pain of Ringabel’s gashes. It could not compare to the pain of Ringabel’s heart.
“Then why does Alternis Dim stare back at me?” Ringabel continued to ask as he stared into a piece of the shattered mirror. “Why is it that no matter how much I change, he never leaves me?”
Edea had known what had happened as soon as she heard the glass. Ringabel had become lost ever since remembering who he used to be, and now he was unsure about himself. He was no longer Ringabel, but he wasn’t Alternis. He was nobody, a life in limbo, a life looking to find its way back to reality. Ringabel was a man who shouldn’t exist, and Alternis Dim was a man who could only suffer.
Edea shed a tear. “Alternis Dim can only hurt you if you let him… He is only there if you let yourself see him,” she whispered even more gently. She could see Ringabel struggling to find a grip on himself, and the more he tried to the farther away he became.
“I want him gone, Edea! I want him gone..!” Ringabel weakly cried. He was gripping onto her arm now, and blood started to drip onto her. Edea placed her hand on Ringabel’s chest and looked him in the eyes.
“I know, Ringabel… I know, and I’m here to help you,” she promised him with a loving, yet sad smile. She could feel his heart beating, but with each pump more blood left his body. She needed to give him a potion and wrap his wound soon.
“Get me a drink, Edea. I need a drink,” he mumbled as he placed his other hand over hers. Edea felt a lump forming in her throat but forced herself to speak through it. She couldn’t stay silent.
“No, Ringabel. No alcohol. I promised to be your support, and I’m not giving up on you know,” she told him despite the lump causing her pain. Ringabel squeezed her hand tightly and began to shake.

“Say Ringabel… If the baby turned out to be a boy, what do you think he would be like?” Edea asked, her eyes still on her book. Ringabel tried to get a peek at it but wasn’t having any luck, so he just put his arm around her and looked at her instead.
“Well, we’ve already agreed that if we were to have a boy his name would be Alternis Braev Lee. As for what he would be like, that is a good question. I believe that if we had a son, he would be overall gentle in nature, but would easily be able to take a hit. He would not be outspoken on matters presented to him, and he would consider all of his possibilities before making a decision. He and Theo would be close, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they became the best of friends,” Ringabel predicted. He looked proud of himself, but Edea wasn’t completely convinced.
“So since Agnès is my best friend and Tiz yours, our sons have to be friends as well?” she asked with a raised eyebrow. Ringabel laughed and nodded his head.
“Of course, Edea! The two of them might even have their own adventure to go on when they’re older!” Ringabel exclaimed with full confidence. Edea just shook her head and kept her eyes on her book.
“And what if we have a girl? What would happen then?” Edea continued to ask as she leaned her head against Ringabel’s shoulders. Ringabel took a deep breath and had to take another moment to think.
“Now if it were a girl… That would be Lyvia Rosalie Lee. She would be a lively and feisty girl, much like her mother. She would be quick to make decisions and once she’s made up her mind to do something, she would not stop until she succeeds. Along with being able to throw a punch, she would have an uncanny amount of charm and charisma. I do fear if we had a daughter, she would easily be able to charm and fight her way to becoming the queen of all of Luxendarc,” Ringabel warned. Edea shook her head again and laughed.
“If you say so, Ringabel. How would Theo fit into her life though? You were keen to add him into the life of our son, but not of our daughter,” Edea pointed out. Ringabel couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Frankly Edea, I fear Theo would be stuck serving our daughter for the rest of his life. Whether he’d be fine with that I have no idea, but those are the lightest terms I can put this in,” Ringabel explained. Edea was shaking her head once again, as she knew what Ringabel had truly wanted to say. She was glad he at least had a bit of restraint though.

Edea should have seen it coming.
Her day started in the early morning with her and Ringabel talking over breakfast. The major political powers of every continent of Luxendarc were holding a meeting later in the morning, and Edea only had a little bit of time left to prepare. The meeting was going to hopefully help finalize a peace treaty amongst all countries of Luxendarc, along with a few minor things here and there. Since she was to be hosting the meeting, Kamiizumi and Einheria had helped her organize her papers the day before, but Edea still felt she was missing something, which worried her. If things didn’t go perfectly, she could risk ruining the foreign relationships she had built up over the past few years.
“Let’s see, these are the documents on trade agreements… And these are the documents on the Eternian Airship lines… But that leaves the reports about our guard and military unaccounted for,” she mumbled to herself while glancing at all the documents placed on the table. The stacks of paper were neatly lined up and labeled, but not one seemed to be what she was looking for.
“Those reports were my responsibility, and I know for a fact I turned them into Einheria yesterday afternoon,” Ringabel mentioned as he poured himself his third cup of coffee that morning. Edea bit the top of her pen and once again glanced at the papers lying around.
“I had no doubt in my mind that you did, and I swore I had them… But they’re nowhere to be found now,” Edea grumbled before chewing on her pen more. It was starting to crack a bit, and the decorative paint on it was chipping off. Ringabel had to take it away from her before she broke it.
“If worse comes to worse, I’ll just recount what I wrote in those reports at the meeting. Really, all it is was is ‘we’re not dead, nor have we tried to kill you’,” he joked before taking a sip of his coffee. He seemed to be proud of himself, as Edea could see a bit of grin before it was obscured by his mug. Edea, however, was unamused by his joke and rolled her eyes. With all the stress she was feeling, she needed him to be serious.
“If I don’t find these papers, you’re going to recite those reports word for word and rewrite them afterwards!” she scolded before making one last effort to find her missing papers. Ringabel, meanwhile, slumped over a bit and frowned. He seemed disappointed she hadn’t laughed.
“You’re stressing yourself out way too much over this, dear, and you know what the doctor said about stress,” he started to warn. “If you don’t manage your stress levels properly, you might accidentally send yourself into early labor.”
Edea groaned. Of course he had to remind her of the one thing that was making all of this more difficult. She was in her 34th week of pregnancy, and the twins were expected to be born any day now. She hadn’t planned for this meeting to be the same week as her due date, but this was the only day that would work out for all five political groups. Both she and Ringabel had hoped the twins would be born before the day the meeting took place, but that had obviously not been the case.
“I’m not going to send myself into early labor!”

“Daddy? Are you in there?” a small voice called as the door creaked open a bit. Looking over, Ringabel could see his oldest daughter peering in. She was still in her pajamas and had her baby sister on her back.
“Lyvia, I… Yes, I am. What do you need?” Ringabel asked while sitting up. Lyvia managed to make her way across the room without letting her sister slip off her back, and her twin brother, still in his pajamas as well, followed behind with a plate of food in hand.
“Mommy told us you weren’t feeling well today…” Lyvia began to explain. “And since you didn’t come down for breakfast, Alternis and I decided to bring it to you! And look, Valentine came too!” she said with a smile. She was holding her baby sister up to her father now, and Ringabel had to take her before Lyvia dropped her.
“Thank you, you two,” Ringabel said with a forced smile. Both the twins smiled in response and Ringabel felt his heart drop a bit. He felt it was a bit unfair to them that he wasn’t letting them know everything that was going on.
“Here, let me take Vivi so you can eat, daddy” Alternis insisted while handing the plate to Lyvia. Holding out his arms, Alternis carefully took his baby sister and held her gently. He was a lot more careful than Lyvia, who handed Ringabel his breakfast as soon as Valentine was in her brother’s arms. Looking down, Ringabel saw the cook had made a smiley face out the eggs and bacon they had brought him.
“Mommy made them before she left,” Lyvia mentioned. “She said to take them to you when the nanny showed up if you hadn’t come down yourself yet!”
“I’m taking the nanny just got here then?” Ringabel asked while poking his eggs with a fork. The yolk jiggled each time he did.
“She… Didn’t show up today,” Alternis admitted while fidgeting a bit. “We waited and waited, but she never came.. So we figured we’d come up here and that you’d watch us today instead!”
Ringabel let out a long sigh and placed his fork down on the edge of his plate. He was definitely no stranger to having to take care of the kids, in fact, he preferred it to having a nanny watch them, but there were days in which a nanny was invaluable. Today would have been one of days, but if the nanny didn’t show up he had no choice but to watch the kids. He just wasn’t sure if he was up for it, but he had to try his best for the time being. Perhaps if he waited long enough the nanny would show up and he’d be able to hand the kids off to her.
Ringabel gave the twins a stern look. “If you three are to spend the day with me then you must promise you two will help take care of your baby sister today, and you need to get into as little trouble as possible,” he told them. Lyvia gave Ringabel a salute.
“Aye aye, General Lee, sir!” she said while giggling. Her brother tried saluting as well, but found it too difficult to do so while holding his wiggling baby sister.
“We won’t get into any trouble today, promise! The only thing we’ve done today is broken an attic window!” Alternis exclaimed proudly. Ringabel slowly covered his face with his hands and shook his head. He really wasn’t up to dealing with this today.
“Daddy, aren’t you going to eat your breakfast?” Lyvia asked while climbing onto the bed. Ringabel looked down out at the smiling plate and admittedly didn’t have the appetite to eat it. He knew he had to though, or he’d be regretting it the next day.
“So your mother made breakfast today?” Ringabel asked before taking a bite out of one of the eggs. They were cold, but he knew that it was because they had been sitting out for awhile now.
“Mhm, and I helped!” Alternis mentioned while smiling triumphantly. All three children were on the bed now, and Ringabel reached over to pat the top of Alternis’ head before continuing to eat. The food wasn’t bad, but the fact it was cold wasn’t making forcing it down any easier.

Reason Dropped: Dropped in favor of “Who his Father Is”
Zealan shouldn’t have existed.
It wasn’t an insult or a death wish, but a fact that Ringabel knew all too well. Zealan came from a world where his mother should have been dead, and he himself never born, but he lived and breathed despite these odds. It had been a result of Ringabel’s handiwork, of course, and he had risked it all to get things to where they were now. He had been given the opportunity to change things, to rewrite history, to save the ones he loved, and he took it. He took it as soon as his employers had offered it to him…
Save the ones you have lost, and send the one who has lost to them… Then one day, perhaps, you will see her again…
It had been dangerous, but the end results were worth it. Ringabel was reunited with the love of his life, and he was able to give happiness to somebody who deserved it even more than he did. Though Ringabel did have to wait quite some time before he could say “I love you”, he couldn’t have been any happier when he finally could. Everything was perfect now, and nothing seemed to have gone wrong in the process. He wish he had known that hadn’t been the case though, and that lives had crumbled away in the world he had saved.
Zealan’s mother had died in childbirth, and his father, unfit to properly care for his son after the loss of the woman he loved, disappeared after putting him in the arms of somebody he trusted. The newborn was left without parents, and his adoptive father had to sacrifice many things to raise him. Zealan’s life was destined to be an unhappy one from the moment he was born, and it had only proven itself as the years went by. His grandfather looked down upon him, and though his grandmother showed him more love, she passed away when he was still young. It was as if his existence was cursed.
When Ringabel met Zealan, it had been almost 20 years since Ringabel had last stepped foot in his world. He had gone at the request of his now former employers, and he was shocked by what he found. Edea Lee had died 17 years prior, and Alternis Dim, the man she loved, had disappeared a few days later. They had a son, Zealan Dim, who would be turning 18-years-old on New Year’s Eve that year. He was being raised by Kamiizumi, and due to the circumstances that had occurred, Braev never claimed Zealan as the heir to the title of Grand Marshal.
When Zealan first laid eyes on Ringabel, it was heartbreaking. Zealan had thought that after so many years, his father had finally come home, but Ringabel regrettably explained the truth of the matter. Though he was indeed Alternis Dim, he hailed from a different world where things had played out differently. Zealan’s mother was still alive, and she and Ringabel had children of their own, but Zealan was a child they had never known existed.

A Poem for Magnolia
Pairing: Yewnolia
Word Count of Actual Fic: 1441 Words
Not dropped, just on hiatus until I find time to write
Yew fell out of his chair when he heard somebody knock on his office door.
It was late, and Yew had been too busy focusing on his work to realize it. Papers were scattered across his desk, and a few of them had fallen onto the floor in his panic. Peering over at his clock, he could see it was almost midnight, which meant he had been working for at least seven hours. Despite all the papers and the time that had passed though, he didn’t feel as if he has gotten any work done. At the rate he was going, it’d be an all nighter…
As Yew gathered his papers and stood up, there was another knock on the door. He would have assumed everyone in House Geneolgia would be asleep at this point, so he wasn’t sure who would be up still. Not wanting to present himself as a slob, Yew quickly organized his papers and went to close his diary, but he found himself distracted by words he had written and crossed out throughout the day. If it hadn’t been for him writing, he probably would have finished his work on time, but that obviously hadn’t been the case. He’d just need to work extra hard in order to make sure he sent in his reports on time.
When there was a third knock, Yew was once again caught off guard and let out a yelp. A bit shaken, he looked towards the door and cleared his throat. “Y-you can come in!” he stuttered as he closed his diary. When the door opened, he felt a bit dumb for not realizing who had been knocking.
“Ah la vache, Yew! Do you realize how late it is?” Magnolia asked as she walked over to Yew’s desk. She was dressed for bed, and her hair showed she had tried to at least sleep a bit, which meant she either hadn’t been able to or had been woken up. Either way, she did not seem pleased that Yew hadn’t joined her.
“Sorry, sorry, I know I should have been in bed by now…” Yew apologized as he sat and leaned back in his chair. “I just have so many reports that I lost track of time! Lady Edea and Sir Alternis sure are working me to the bone.”
Magnolia frowned as she leaned against the desk. “Ever since Edea appointed you to her Council, you’ve been doing nothing but work! I understand how important this work is to you, but you still need to take care of yourself,” Magnolia lectured as she waggled her finger at Yew, who slid down in his chair and let out a tired sigh.
“She and Sir Alternis are just really pushing me to get this stuff done by the end of the week though. Apparently there’s some financial issues within the military guard, so they’re trying to find out if anybody is overspending,” he explained. “Then once that’s done, Sir Alternis wants to meet me with on a weekly basis so we can discuss ways to improve the relationships between the two guards…”
Sitting on Yew’s desk, Magnolia crossed her legs and looked out the window. “Alternis has taken quite a liking to you, hasn’t he? Ever since he’s returned from his… après mûre réflexion, he’s been using you as his little errand boy,” Magnolia pointed out before laughing a bit. Though Yew knew she was right, he couldn’t help but a bit embarrassed.
“We just have a lot to do, Magnolia! I don’t mind helping him out, especially since he and Lady Edea are always so busy, and it technically is my job as a member of the Eternian Council,” Yew reminded her. “Besides, it’s probably good for me to study under such an honorable knight like Sir Alternis! I mean, Tiz is a great mentor too, but he and her Holiness- erm, Agnès- live across the sea now, so I don’t get to see him as often.”
Magnolia laughed again before taking a pen off the desk and twirling it between her fingers. “Always willing to help out those in need, aren’t you, mon chèr? Though with the way you keep praising Alternis,  I’m starting to think you’re his fiancé and not mine!” she teased. Yew felt his face turn a deep shade of red as he began to panic.
“K-kaguya, you know that isn’t true! I l-love you more than anything, and I’m willing to do anything for you! Sir Alternis is just my boss!” Yew stuttered as he quickly took Magnolia’s hands into his. She giggled a bit before leaning a bit to give him a peck on the forehead.
“It’s only a joke, dear! I’m fully aware that he’s your boss and you respect him,” she told him with a smile, “but I wasn’t expecting to upset you to the point you’d use my real name!”
Yew let out a sigh of relief.

“Shameful! Disgusting! Sacrilege!”
Yew looked up from his reports as his fiancée stormed into his office. Her pale face was turning as red as her eyes, and she was clutching a book tightly near her chest. It was more than obvious she was angry, but Yew hadn’t a clue what was going on. He hadn’t been paying much attention to anything other than his reports that morning, so anything happening outside of that he had been oblivious too. Something had set Magnolia off though, and he was really hoping it hadn’t been him.
“Do you know what this is!?” Magnolia asked furiously as she slammed the book onto her desk. The book itself was beaten and worn, and it definitely wasn’t benefiting from Magnolia’s violent treatment. A bit nervous, Yew leaned over to get a better look.
“…oh, this is my copy of ‘the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter’! My mother gave it to me when I was little. It apparently belonged to my great-great-grandfather,” Yew explained as he picked the book up off his desk. It was a bit dusty, so he brushed his hand along it to wipe it clean. As he did so, Magnolia let out a loud huff and put her hands on her hips.
“I don’t care who it belonged to! This book is a disgrace!” she angrily declared as she leaned forward. Yew gawked at her in shock, unsure why she seemed so offended by the old book. It wasn’t as if it was anything more than an old fairytale.
Yew tried his best to get Magnolia to calm down. “It’s only a children’s story, Magnolia! I understand it takes things from Lunar culture, but the author didn’t know any better!” he tried to convince his outraged fiancèe. Magnolia ignored him though and instead gripped onto the edge of the desk.
“Tell me Yew, what is this story about?” she asked as she tried to dig her nails into the wood. Yew gulped a bit, somewhat fearful about where this was going, but tried his best to answer.
“Well, it’s about the life of a girl from the moon who becomes a Luxendarcian princess, for starters.”

“So… Why are you here?” Alternis asked Ringabel while attempting to not glare. At the moment, Ringabel seemed more concerned with taking off some of his armor than talking, and Alternis felt he was expected to do the same. The most he’d even consider removing was his helmet though.
“You won’t be able to drink all that coffee through that armor, you know. Trust me, I’ve tried,” Ringabel teased while placing his own helmet down and reaching for his cup. Alternis grumbled, unamused by the comment.
“I was 15 and had stayed up all night training. You out of all people should know I didn’t mean to do it,” Alternis complained while removing his helmet. He could feel his hair sticking up and curling in weird directions.
“Of course I know we didn’t mean to do it! I was just teasing you is all! Oh, and see you still haven’t figured out how to deal with your helmet hair” Ringabel continued to tease before taking a sip of his coffee. Alternis resisted the urge to punch him in the face.
“Hm, you say that but… Your hair honestly doesn’t look any better than mine with the way you stick it up and curl it over like that. To think you thought helmet hair was an actual style as an amnesiac,” Alternis snarked back, slightly proud of his insult. Ringabel, however, smiled and shook his head.
“Well, how was supposed to know at the time I had grown out my hair to be more like Braev? I just styled my hair in a way that felt familiar, and it turned out to be more of a pompadour than a ponytail. Speaking of which, how far does it go down to now?” Ringabel asked while pointing at Alternis’ hair. Alternis wondered if Ringabel could notice the split ends.
“My mid-back at this point,” Alternis answered while pulling his hair back into a more familiar ponytail, “b-but I need to get it cut at some point… To make it easier to put in my helmet.”
“Oh, don’t be so ashamed! We all need our split ends trimmed at some point, so there’s no need to lie about,” Ringabel teased once again before taking another sip of his coffee. Alternis felt his face turning read but tried to his embarrassment.
“E-enough about my hair!”

A Poem to Remember
So today is @komatsujo‘s birthday, and she wanted to blessed with Rindea stuff! ...so here I am, blessing her with a Rindea ficlet. It’s another short fic and technically a sequel to “A Poetic Letter”, but uh... Happy birthday and I hope you like it???
Word Count: 1803 Words
Additional Notes: I can’t think of a good summary, but there’s a poem in this because I like writing poems and hope you guys like poems too.
“Don’t touch that!”
Ringabel looked at his girlfriend as she leapt out in front of him. Her cheeks were flushed and her expression filled with determination, and she was blocking Ringabel from moving. A moment before, he had gone over to a filing cabinet in order to put some documents away, but for some strange reason, Edea had rushed over and stopped him from doing so. He couldn’t understand why she had, as there didn’t seem to be anything remotely abnormal about the filing cabinet, but there she was, staring him down and blocking it from his view. Confused by her actions, Ringabel furrowed his brow and tilted his head.
“This is where you said to put the files, right?” he asked Edea as he held the documents up to her. During the week, she had ordered him to fill out important documents relating to the Sky Knights, and now that they had been processed and cleared she had told him to put them away. As soon as he started walking over to file them though, it seems she had changed her mind. Still in front of him, Edea bit her lip and stretched her arms out to the side.
“I can’t have you seeing the sensitive material in these files. They contain top secret information,” she said with a bit of force. She sounded a bit nervous, but her face wasn’t showing any signs of her nerves acting up. Ringabel, brow still furrowed, blinked a few times and frowned.
“Then how am I supposed to put the files away if you won’t let me?” Ringabel continued to ask. He had a feeling Edea wasn’t telling him the truth, but she was doing an excellent job at keeping her composure. Ringabel had been Eternia’s general for quite some time now, and all information and data had to pass through him before even reaching Edea. There was no such case in which he wouldn’t be informed about sensitive material, so he had no other choice other than to assume Edea was lying to him. Edea, however, continued to hold her composure and tried to push him away from the cabinet.
“I’ll put them away for you! I should have actually done that in the first place!” she told him as she tried to take the files from Ringabel’s hand. She still sounded nervous, and Ringabel noticed her hands were shaking a bit. He lifted the files out of her reach before she could take them though, looking her straight in the eyes as he did so.
“You’re not getting ahold of these files until you tell me what you’re hiding from me, Edea,” he said as he held the files far above her head. “No sensitive information relating to Eternia ever gets past me, so I know you’re not being truthful with me.”
Edea stared at Ringabel and put her hands on her hips. “I never said that the information related to Eternia,” she pointed out to him. Ringabel realized she had been right, but that still didn’t make him any less curious. She was still hiding something from him, and he wanted to know what.
“Well as your boyfriend, I would still like to know what you don’t want me seeing,” he told her. “Keeping secrets will only add stress to our relationship, so it’s better just to clear things up before it's too late.”
Edea let an annoyed sigh and tried to jump up to grab the papers from Ringabel’s hands. “Just give me the stupid files, Ringabel! It doesn’t matter what’s in there!” she complained as the papers were lifted farther and farther from her reach. Ringabel watched her continuously leap into the air with no success and shook his head when she showed no signs of giving up.
“If it didn’t matter what was in there, you wouldn’t be acting this way, Edea,” he pointed out to her. He could hear Edea grumble something under breath, and he assumed she was cursing him out. A second later, she said something about him being “irrational and childish”, though It seemed pretty obvious to him though that he wasn’t the one acting that way.
“It’s none of your business what’s in there, Ringabel! Now hand them over!” Edea continued to complain. She had stopped jumping, and her fists were clenched with anger. She was taking deep breaths as well, more than likely as an attempt to get herself to stay somewhat calm. Thinking it was safe, Ringabel lowered the files back down, but still kept a strong grip on them so Edea couldn’t take them from his hands.
“I’m not handing these over until you tell me what’s in the file cabinet,” Ringabel reiterated. Edea huffed and glared at him, no doubt trying to intimidate him now, but Ringabel stared back at her with no signs of backing down.
“Why are you so desperate to know what’s in there anyway!?” Edea asked while puffing her chest out. “It’s not like I’m keeping some huge secret from you!”
Ringabel shook his head again. “Any secret you keep from me is a big secret, Edea. Besides, if you don’t tell me now, I’ll just keep bugging you until you finally do. Or perhaps… I’ll sneak a peek when you aren’t looking,” Ringabel suggested to her. Displeased with both the outcomes she was presented with, Edea stomped her foot and finally admitted defeat.
“Ugh, fine! I’ll tell you what’s in there as long as you just give me the documents!” she said while throwing her hands up in the air. Finally satisfied, Ringabel loosened his grip on the papers.
“Deal,” he said as he held the files out to her. Edea snatched the files from his hands and faced the filing cabinet. She seemed hesitant to put the papers away, which was odd seeing how she had been so determined to get them a moment before. Ringabel assumed it was because she didn’t want to admit what she was hiding, so he moved a bit closer to her to try and get her to move a little faster. Finally, she opened the top drawer and took out an envelope.
“...it’s… It’s the poems,” she admitted as she placed the file into the envelope, which then went between two folders. Ringabel watched as she took out an older envelope from the back of the drawer and put it on top of the cabinet.
“The poems?” he asked Edea as she closed the drawer. She was getting flustered again, and she refused to look Ringabel in the eyes.
“Yes, the poems! The ones... The ones you gave to me when you were gone… All twenty-four of them… I keep them in my office in case I want to read them again…” she admitted to him, much to her embarrassment. Ringabel was surprised his poetry was what she had been hiding and wasn’t sure why she had wanted to keep it a secret.
“Edea…” Ringabel said in a way that mimicked a soft laugh. “Why wouldn’t you just tell me that instead of trying to hide it from me? I am the one who wrote them, so I already know what they say! What harm would come from me knowing?”
Edea continued to keep her gaze away from Ringabel. “I didn’t want you making fun of me for it…” she explained to him. It was obvious she was still embarrassed, but she wasn’t acting how she normally did. Usually, she’d get angry and huffy when embarrassed, but this time… This time she was shy and soft. Ringabel gave her a warm smile.
“Me? Make fun of you for it? Edea, I should be flattered that a wonderful woman like yourself would even consider keeping the heartfelt love poems of a lowly man!” he told her in what he felt was an encouraging way. Edea, however, quickly became annoyed with his comments.
“See, you’re doing it now!” she accused while puffing her cheeks out. Ringabel was caught off guard, as he had been truly trying to cheer her up, and stood quietly for a moment before speaking again.
“...come here, Edea,” he requested as he opened his arms out to her. Edea looked at him without saying anything, but he continued to beckon for her to come hug him. Slowly, Edea shuffled over and wrapped her arms around him, though she was still a bit annoyed with him. Ringabel let her rest her head against his chest despite this and wrapped his arms tightly around her in return. “It really makes me happy you’ve kept the poems for so long. I wrote them only for your eyes, so to know you still read them is one of the best feelings to have. I wasn’t trying to tease you; I was only trying to show you how much it meant to me,” he explained to her. He was trying to be as heartfelt as his poems, and it seemed to be having an effect. He could tell Edea was calming down and a little less annoyed with him.
“Sorry for keeping it a secret from you....” she apologized as she stayed close to him. Ringabel enjoyed the closeness and hoped it didn’t end any time soon. He kissed the top of her head and continued to smile.
“All is forgiven, my little peahen,” he said as he began to rock her from side to side. She seemed to have gone back to being soft and shy, as she was quiet when she spoke.
“...hey, Ringabel?” she said in attempts to get his attention. It wasn’t that hard to do though, as they were already as close as they could be. It was weird seeing Edea be this quiet, but he wasn’t going to complain. Though he was fond of her energetic and cheerful nature, it was nice to see other sides of her as well.
“Yes, Edea?” Ringabel asked as he continued to rock her. She was having a bit of a hard time keeping her feet on the ground as he did so, but she managed to keep her balance long enough to look up at him.
“...do you think you can write me another poem?” she quietly asked him. Another smile creeped along Ringabel’s face, and he took a moment to come up with another poem Edea would want to keep…
“A little bird sits and waits, Her beauty catching my eye. And even though she’s loud and fierce, She can also be quite shy.
She tells me all her secrets, Adding to her allure. And her charms are unforgettable, Leaving me to fall in love with her.
So for this bird that I love, These poems I will write. For even when I’m far away, I am still her beloved knight.
I love you, my little peahen…”
