You've been unconscious for three days so I decided to try to wake you up with a kiss and oh my god you actually woke up!- Astrid to Hiccup for a whump prompt (set in rtte if you can please) Love your writing btw!!!
Whoop! Guess who wrote something today?? It was me! Haha. Here you go Anon!
Three days.
Three long, agonising days.
Watching Hiccup tossand turn and shiver and sweat. Mumbling and moaning but never truly waking.
The illness had come onso suddenly, taking them all by surprise.
Astrid had noticed thatHiccup was quieter than usual, toying with his food over supper. She’d put itdown to a busy week. Between their back and forth trips to see the Defenders ofthe Wing, and their constant clashes against Viggo and his Dragon Hunters, there had not been much time for rest and relaxation. They were all exhausted.
They’d all gone to bedearly, Hiccup parting with a murmured goodnight, and Astrid had not thought anymore of it.
Until Toothless burstinto her hut.
It was barely morning. The new day was no more than a soft glow on the horizon.
Astrid sprung from herbed, hair tangled and daggers raised. It took a moment for her eyes to adjustto the darkness. Toothless was an inky shadow at the end of her bed, his greeneyes glowed eerily.
Stormfly squawked ather rider, rushing over and stroking her hair, reassuring Astrid that thepresence in her room was not a dangerous one. The girl stowed her blades.
“Toothless? What areyou doing here?” She swung her legs over the bed.
The Night Fury dashedtowards the door, pausing and turning to wait at the threshold.
“You want me to followyou?” Astrid tugged on her boots. “Is something wrong?” Her mind drifted backto Hiccup at dinner. “Is it Hiccup?” She let Toothless lead the way, jogging upthe ramp that spanned the distance between the two huts.
The front door wasopen, pushed ajar by Toothless in his haste.
Astrid stepped throughcautiously, not sure what to expect. The bottom level of the hut was Hiccup’sforge. The wall was covered in posters, blueprints for his new ideas; toolshung in place, ready to be used. The forge fire smouldered in its pit, warmingthe room and casting a soft glow over everything.
Upstairs was Hiccup’sbedroom.
Astrid followedToothless up the stairs. Bits and pieces of inventions lay scattered across thefloor. Over in the corner was the large, flat stone Toothless used for his bed.
Hiccup was asleep - understandable at this time of night.
Toothless rushed overto sit beside his rider.
Given the dragon’sconcern, Astrid decided to go over and wake Hiccup up, if only to reassure theNight Fury that everything was okay. In the back of her mind a small voicepointed out that Toothless wasn’t one to get worked up over nothing. If thedragon was concerned, perhaps Astrid should be concerned also.
She ignored the feelingand crouched beside the bed.
“Hiccup?” Astridgrasped his shoulder gently and gave it a slight shake. “Hey, wake up.”
Hiccup’s lips partedslightly and he moaned, his eyes scrunching up tight.
“Hiccup?” A moreinsistent shake this time. “Toothless is worried about you.” Astrid was worriedtoo, but she didn’t voice this thought out loud.
“Toothless?” Hiccupslurred the name, squinting up at the dragon. “S’nothing. M’fine bud.” Heturned to Astrid, surprise lighting his features. “What’chu doing here?”
“Toothless came and gotme,” Astrid explained. She moved to sit on the edge of the bed. “Are you sureyou’re okay?”
It was hard to tell inthis light, but Astrid thought Hiccup looked a bit pale. His freckles stood outin stark relief against his face.
“’m just tired. ‘s themiddle of the night.” Hiccup propped himself up on an elbow.
“Alright,” Astridhesitated. “You know where I am if you need anything.” She stood slowly andmade her way back to her own hut. Lying in her own bed, sleep refused to come. Astrid gave upshortly before dawn, rising to train with Stormfly in the early morning light.
By the time she arrivedat the clubhouse for breakfast the rest of the Dragon Riders were up. Ruff andTuff were in a tug of war over a plate of food. Fishlegs was reading a book,Snotlout stood behind him, teasing him about something he’d said.
“Morning Astrid,”Fishlegs looked up from his book, ignoring Snotlout’s mocking. “What’s the planfor today?”
Astrid sat with herplate. “I was thinking we could take a day off.” Behind her, the twins bumpedfists and cheered. “We’ve been so busy, I think we could all use it.”
“Yes!” Snotlout joinedRuffnut and Tuffnut in cheering.
“It’s a good idea, ifwe can talk Hiccup into it.” Fishlegs shut his book.
“Yeah, where issleeping beauty anyway?” Snotlout asked.
“He was talking aboutsome improvements he wanted to make to his fire sword,” Fishlegs commented. “Heprobably got distracted working on in.”
It wasn’t uncommon forHiccup to forget to eat. Once Astrid had finished her breakfast she loaded up aplate to take up to Hiccup’s hut. Stormfly hopped along behind her, chitteringhappily and trying to steal bites from the plate in Astrid’s hands.
It was still darkinside the hut. The fire that had been smouldering overnight had gone out.Astrid placed the plate on Hiccup’s desk and went upstairs.
Toothless was curled upon his stone. His eyes blinked open as Astrid entered the room.
Astrid went over to thebed. Hiccup was shivering beneath the blankets, fingers twisted in the wool. Hisface was flushed.
Astrid leaned over andplaced her hand on his forehead, frowning at the heat that radiated from him.
Hiccup shifted at thetouch. “’strid?”
“Hey,” Astrid let herhand drop. “Why didn’t you say you weren’t feeling well?” She asked. It hadn’tbeen that long since her late-night visit. Why hadn’t Hiccup said anything?
Hiccup sat up scrubbinghis hands across his face. “Just thought I was tired,” he mumbled.
Astrid considered himcarefully. She wouldn’t put it past Hiccup to try and keep an illness tohimself and try and push through it, but he wasn’t trying to hide it now,Astrid decided he was telling the truth.
“You hungry?” Sheasked.
“No.” Hiccup shook hishead. “Not really.”
“You should eatsomething anyway,” Astrid told him. “There might still be some food on theplate downstairs, if Stormfly hasn’t got to it.”
Hiccup let out a smallbreath and shrugged. “Okay. I’ll try and eat something.”
Astrid went downstairsto fetch the breakfast she’d brought Hiccup. She passed over the plate andwatched him pick at the food.
“You should get some rest,”Astrid advised.  “I gave the others theday off.” She turned to the dragon. “Toothless, come get me if he needsanything.”
She left the hut.Chances were Fishlegs was still in the Club House. Between the two of them, they had the most medical knowledge, even if it wasn’t much. They could taketurns checking in on Hiccup during the day.
Snotlout, Ruffnut andTuffnut had all left by the time she returned. They had taken the offer of aday off and disappeared. Fishlegs was still reading his book, he promised tokeep an eye on Hiccup when Astrid explained the situation.
With a quick “thanks”,Astrid left. Just because everyone had the day off, didn’t mean the islandcould go unprotected. She decided to do a quick lap to make sure everything wassecure.
*
All day Astrid keptfinding excuses to visit Hiccup.
He slept through allher visits and Astrid’s concern grew. His fever burned below his skin.
Astrid shook himgently. “Hey, you need to drink something,” she told him when he finallygroaned and shifted. She’d brought water with her. Astrid poured it into a cupand held it out for Hiccup.
He took the cup withshaky hands and managed a sip, but he wouldn’t drink anymore.
Astrid watched over himas he drifted off to sleep once more. She couldn’t understand how he’d becomesick so quickly. They’d all been to the same places. It didn’t make sense.
Footsteps on the stairsalerted, Astrid to Fishlegs presence.
“How is he?” Fishlegs stood over the bed, gazing at his friend in concern.
“He’s really sick,” Astrid stood to move beside the larger boy.
Fishlegs’ frown deepened. They could manage minor illnesses and injuries at Dragons Edge, but nothing serious.
“Do you think we shouldmaybe take him back to Berk?” He asked.
Astrid shook her head. “I don’t think it’s agood idea for him to fly. But you’re right. I think this is more than we canhandle.”
“What do you think weshould do?” Fishlegs tried to keep the worry form his voice.
Astrid took a moment to consider their options. “One of us needs tohead back to Berk, she said finally. “I think we need Gothi.”
*
They’d sent Snotlout onHookfang.
The Monstrous Nightmarewas one of the faster dragons. Faster than Meatlug, and Barf and Belch.
Astrid had wanted togo, but she was better equipped to help look after Hiccup than Snotlout oreither of the twins. So she had stayed, taking turns with Fishlegs to sitbeside Hiccup as he slept, wringing out a damp cloth to lay across hisforehead. The heat radiating from him dried the cloth quickly.
It would take Snotlouta full day to fly to Berk. It would be another day before they returned, even if he and Gothi left straight away for theEdge.
Astrid watched overHiccup for those two days as he tossed and turned and shivered and sweat, barelyrousing him enough to drink some water every few hours.
“Astrid! They’re back.”Fishlegs call was followed by the soft thump of footsteps up the stairs. Gothiappeared at the entrance to the room, Snotlout and Fishlegs staggered in behindher, arms full of supplies from Berk.
Astrid watched as thesmall woman lent over the bed. Gothi muttered to herself as she pressed herhand to Hiccup’s forehead. Gentle fingers peeled back an eyelid.
Hiccup shifted but didn’twake.
Gothi continued herexamination, her hands grazing over his arms, his chest. Finally, she nodded toherself and gestured Fishlegs and Snotlout over. She rummaged through thebottles and vials, plucking the correct ones from the boy’s arms and placingthem down beside the bed.
She measured dosagesinto a cup.
It took a while, butGothi managed to get Hiccup to drink everything down.
Over the next dayHiccup slowly began to improve.
Fishlegs translationsof Gothi’s scribbling explained that he would likely sleep for a while yet.Astrid was sick of waiting. Of worrying. She wanted her Hiccup back… well nother Hiccup… just Hiccup. She was glad in that moment that no one could read herthoughts.
But it had been threelong and agonising days and Astrid was more than ready to see his green eyesblink open again.
An idea crossed hermind. Stories from childhood about waking sleeping princes with a kiss. Sheblushed at the thought. Hiccup was no prince, though he was the heir to Berk.Astrid knew it wasn’t the brightest idea she’d ever had, but what harm could itdo. Chances were Hiccup would sleep through it and be none the wiser.
There was no one elsein the room.
Astrid leant forwardsover the bed. “Time to wake up now,” she whispered to the sleeping boy andgently brushed her lips against his.
Hiccup’s lips were dryand chapped. They moved slightly and Astrid sat back, heart pounding. Hiccupwas watching her through slowly blinking eyes, his expression hazy.
That wasn’t supposed toactually work.
“Hey,” Astrid spokesoftly, feeling the head of a blush spread across her cheeks.
“Hey.” Hiccup’s mouthmoved to form the words, but no sound emerged. He cleared his throat and triedagain. “What happened?”
From beside the bed,Toothless’s ears perked at the sound of his rider’s voice.
“You got sick,” Astridtold him. “Do you remember?”
Hiccup shook his head. Toothlesstook the opportunity to swipe his tongue across Hiccup’s face. “GrossToothless,” Hiccup croaked. His hands came up to protect himself from the happydragon. He shifted in bed, trying to wipe the dragon slobber from his face.Hiccup felt sweaty and uncomfortable. His fever had broken a few hours ago, andhe’d lost the red flush from his face.
“It doesn’t matter,”Astrid went on, grinning at Hiccup’s attempt to brush his sticky fingers on theblanket. “You’re getting better.”
“I’m exhausted,” Hiccupcomplained. He gave up on his task and slumped back against his pillow.
“Get some rest,” Astridinstructed, but she needn’t have bothered. Hiccup’s eyes were alreadyfluttering lethargically. “We’ll be here when you wake.”
