hi mao! i saw farewell my concubine on the dash and i wanted to ask if you have any other recommendations for must-watch cn movies? i haven't watched many older cn movies but since taking mandarin this semester, i've wanted to start working my way through the movies and who better to ask than you because Tasteβ„’ . thank you again and i hope you have a speedy recovery for your hand <33
hi mint!!! omg I love film so I adore this question haha, thank you for asking. if you're looking for older chinese films specifically, my go-to list would be the repertoire of fifth generation chinese filmmakers, specifically everything they made in the early 90s and earlier. major movies from this era include:
farewell my concubine
raise the red lantern (another one of my personal faves)
red sorghum
the story of qiu jiu
in terms post-90s, early 2000s stuff, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention ang lee. he is famous for crouching tiger, hidden dragon, which I absolutely recommend if you like martial arts.
I also think if your goal is to learn mandarin specifically, there's plenty of mandarin-language films that from outside mainland china that are "must watches". the biggest one that comes to mind is infernal affairs (has both canto and mando), which pretty much considered a classic. wong kar-wai mostly directs cantonese language films but I think there are a couple in mandarin too. funnily enough I havent watched them yet but I love his stuff generally so I'd recommend them LOL
I hope this helps!!!! thank you for the question 🫢 let me know what you think of them! and good luck with your studies!
