By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING: Appeal Court delivers judgement in Senator Orji Kalu’s election dispute The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has reaffirmed the victory of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress APC, representing Abia-North Senatorial zone in the February 25 polls. In a unanimous ruling on Monday the Appeal court presided by Justice Abiri JCA upheld the judgment of the National Assembly Petitions Tribunal, Umuahia which earlier dismissed the petition of People’s Democratic Party’s Mao Ohuabunwa and Labour Party’s Nnamdi Iro Orji for lacking merit. The court while upholding the victory of Kalu of the All Progressives Congress, APC said that the election of the former Abia Governor compiled with the provisions of the Electoral Act. The appeal court judges also faulted the arguments of both petitioners that election did not hold in over 120 polling units mainly in Ohafia and Arochukwu Local Government Areas of the zone. The court also set aside the prayers of Iro Orji, to disqualify Senator Kalu for having allegedly admitted before the Federal High Court that he was convicted of fraud. The panel in its ruling held that there is no valid conviction of Sen Orji Uzor Kalu under section 66 of the Nigerian constitution as the said conviction had been nullified. Further dismissing the appeals of Iro and Ohuabunwa the panel also ruled that appellants of both the PDP and LP failed to prove their allegations of elections not holding in some polling units. The court in its constitutional interpretation also validated Kalu’s eligibility to contest the election stating that his trial and conviction was quashed by the supreme court. Three other grounds of the LP candidate were dismissed in Kalu’s favour. Kalu, a Chieftain of the APC was declared winner by the INEC returning Officer for Abia North, Mr Chinedu Nnamdi at Ohafia. Kalu a two time Lawmaker who currently presides as the Chairman Senate committee on Privatizations and Commercialization was declared winner by INEC of the keenly contested February 25 Senatorial polls having scored 30,805 votes to defeat Nnamdi who got 27,540 votes. While the Abia Senator’s other opponent Mao Ohuabunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 15,175 votes to place third.

Ex-senator, Ohuabunwa give reasons why Kalu not fit for Senate President position
Tumblr media
Mao Ohuabunwa, a former lawmaker who represented Abia North Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, has opposed Orji Uzor Kalu’s bid for Senate President. Ohuabunwa said that Kalu, the incumbent senatorial representative for Abia North, has an ongoing case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and has previously been found guilty. Henstated thjs during a Monday appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. Kalu, who was re-elected, is one of the candidates for Senate President ahead of the June inauguration of the 10th National Assembly. Ohuabunwa, who is from the same senatorial district as Kalu, asserted that the former governor of Abia State is unqualified to serve as a representative of the people. When asked how he would feel should Kalu emerge as the next Senate President, Ohuabunwa said, “I will feel terrible because I don’t believe that he is competent to represent the Senate.” “He has not won the election so I wouldn’t want a Senate President that will be removed tomorrow. He has so much baggage with him. He still has an EFCC case in court, don’t forget that he was convicted. He wasn’t discharged. I am wondering why the EFCC is still holding back on that prosecution.” Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, has given an insight into why Senator Kalu, should be considered for the Senate President position. Speaking on the Presiding Offices, Senator Sani who urged the APC to zone the position of Senate President to the South East geo-political zone of the country, however, stressed on the issue of equity and justice as harbingers for unity of any country. According to him, the APC should consider the above aside any premodial sentiments in the interest of the nation. On who he felt should be considered, he said, the former governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North Senatorial district, Orji Uzor Kalu should be considered for the Senate President. Senator Sani said: “The Senate Presidency should go to the South East. for equity and justice. “There is no better person to stabilise the National Assembly and maintain balance like Orji Uzor Kalu, particularly that he has demonstrated his flair as Chief Whip of the Senate. “Iam not of the APC, but I think he remains the best option out of those who offered themselves and Kalu has the experience and the pedigree as well.” Read the full article

[ad_1] A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Sam Ohuabunwa, has said that he would not be sleeping well if he were in the shoes of Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the main opposition party. Ohuabunwa said that different meetings being held in Port Harcourt between Governor Nyesom Wike and other opposition candidates and camps would have given him some sleepless nights. Ever since his defeat at the PDP presidential primaries by Atiku Abubakar, the Rivers State Governor has been in a romance with some candidates of different political parties. The latest of such meetings was between the Governor and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi. And appearing on Channels Television on Tuesday night, Ohuabunwa accused the PDP leadership of taking competitors such as Peter Obi for granted, warning that such an act was dangerous. He said that if he was on Atiku’s side, he would take all those overtures and meetings in Port Harcourt seriously, insisting that in Nigeria there’s no political meeting that is for nothing. “One of the greatest failures of people is to underrate competitors. As the CEO of a multi-national company for many years, I do not underrate competition no matter how small they are. “And every move the competitor makes in the marketplace causes an alarm for me and I deploy forces to counter those quickly because you don’t have a second chance. “The problem of the party may not be as bad as it is looking but the media say perception is everything and we need to pour water on this and put it off. “Certainly, all those political meetings everybody is coming to if I’m the Chairman of the political party or the presidential candidate I don’t think I’ll sleep well or maybe because I don’t have the kind of heart or spirit that they have. I won’t sleep well. “The next morning I’ll ensure that I fly down to Port Harcourt or wherever I need to fly and pour water on it and close this chapter so that we can move forward. “That’s my candid advice and I’ve offered this advice through proxies to the party leadership that we need to harness our resources. This party is bleeding right now…the party has had enough time to sort out this problem. “The problem is that this is not the only one. Just that this is the most visible one. And if we’re taking so much time to finish this, how are we going to deal with the others?… I think that the party leadership has a call, they should be humble, dynamic and strategic with the party.” Peter Obi, Wike meetings: You shouldn’t sleep well – Ohuabunwa tells Atiku [ad_2]
