Frank was looking at a Los Angeles icon, Dodger Stadium.  It was his new home, his new team and hopefully his new life.  He asked a security guard where to go and was met at the door by an assistant.  She was a shameless flirt, commenting on Frank’s forearms and his tattoos, cooing about how good of a player he is.  There was zero chance of Frank being interested.  His Friday Night adventures were reserved for road trips only. His one-night stands worked out just fine, in his opinion.
As he was guided into the conference room, Frank was met with the president of operations, Nick Stanton. “Mr. Stanton.”
“Frank! Good to see you again.” He shakes hands with Frank. “We’re waiting for everyone so can I offer you a drink?” He gestures to Frank to sit at the table.
“Just a cola, thanks.” Frank took the seat next to the head of the table.
“How was the move?”
“Smoother than I thought it would be. Mary, my niece, threw a couple of tantrums but between me and my nanny, we managed to get her here.”
“Nanny?”
“Oh yeah, Scott, he’s great. He was willing to move with us, which is great since Mary seems to only listen to him.” Frank chuckles. “Who would listen to your uncle/pseudo father?”
“I remember that story,” Nick replies. “You are brave to take on a baby right after bring drafted.”
Frank shrugged. “Its not that big of a deal. You would do anything for family, especially Mary.”
More voices float towards the conference room and Frank stands as he sees his agent and lawyer walk in and shake his hand. Then the general manager for the Dodgers comes in, making small talk with Frank.
“Ok, I think we are just missing the team doctor and our legal team,” Nick tells everyone. “Its not Natasha, she’s busy with another client.  She’s sending in their new associate.”
Frank just nods as the GM goes over the training schedule and when he would meet the team.  The conference room door opens and Frank turns to see and his stomach drops. He feels himself become clammy and pale. Because this shouldn’t be happening.
Fuck.
He looks at the brunette that walked in.
she’s definitely not supposed to be here.
What the FUCK!
Abby Hernandez, his ex-girlfriend, love of his life, walked into the room.

Two weeks later...
“I want to know.”
“So do I.”
“So why can’t we?”
“Because It’s too early for it to show up.”
“That seems stupid. Why are we here? You’re perfect.”
“I’m a mess.”
A chuckle. “But you’re my mess.”
“Thanks, I think.”
Frank kissed the top of Abby’s head. “You’re beautiful Cricket.”
“I don’t feel like it.”
“You’re twelve weeks pregnant, Cricket.” Frank took her hand. “You’ve been nauseous every day for the last two weeks. Plus, the stress from the hearing wasn’t helping.”
“And you’re leaving,” she mumbled.
“Sweetheart, you know I don’t want to leave you. I have to go to work.”
“Stupid playoffs.”
Frank chuckled. Abby had always hated when the playoffs started because he would have to be on the road for five days at any time during the current series. They were starting in LA, the Dodgers having the best record in the West, facing off against Arizona. “Cricket, it’s gonna be fine. Marco and Scott will be home to help. Please, just take it easy, ok?”
Abby sighed. She knew this but it didn’t stop her anxiety. She thought back on the last couple of weeks.
Mike had been officially charged with kidnapping and endangerment since there were drugs found in his house.  He was fighting it, of course, but now Frank and Abby had a protection order against him.  He went back to Boston in custody, his bail revoked.
Diane pled no contest to her charges of assault and battery. The deal she made was to allow her to stay in treatment in Boston as long as she had no contact with Abby or Mike. She asked for a letter to be delivered before she accepted.  Abby read the letter, Diane’s apologies all over it. Abby closed that chapter in her heart, grateful her friend had found peace and recovery.
Bobby Fuller was suspended pending a full investigation for his involvement with Frank’s incident in Vegas as well as helping Mike with the kidnapping.  He made a statement, saying he was not going to fight any charges or decisions made by the league.  He had earned what would happen to him after everything had concluded and offered his apologies to the Adler family.
Now, she was dealing with the playoffs and the push for Los Angeles to make it to the World Series once again. She came out of her thoughts as her doctor entered the room. “Hello Dr. Adler.”
“Hey Dr. Montgomery.”
“Mr. Adler,” she shook Frank’s hand. “Ready to start the playoffs?
“Absolutely Doc.” Frank flashed her a smile. “Game one tomorrow.”
“You better bring that trophy home,” she replied.  “Now Abby, how are you feeling?”
“Nauseous and thirsty at the same time.  Kinda weird.”
“Yeah, that happens. Any drowsiness, bloating, cravings?”
“A little bit of everything.” Abby smiled. “Just generally tired. Had back to back surgeries yesterday and then Mary decided it was time to learn a new hobby.” She gave Frank a pointed look.
“How did I know she wanted to learn the drums? She said she wanted to play an instrument.” Frank shrugged and gave his best boyish grin.
Dr. Montgomery chuckled. “Yeah, I can understand that. Well, your blood work came back great, your weight is on track for twelve weeks.”
“When will I pop?” Abby placed a hand over her belly. “Right now, I just feel big but Frank says I look the same.”
“No, I said you look beautiful,” Frank argued.
“Whatever.”
“Usually, moms pop their bellies closer to 15 or 16 weeks. Like I mentioned, your weight is great for twelve weeks. Now, are we ready to see baby?” Abby nodded.  “Ok, scoot down, shirt under your breast and pants down a little.  Sorry, this is a little cold.”  She squirted gel onto Abby, grabbed the wand and rolled over her skin.  Frank and Abby stared at the screen, just a mix of black, white and gray, until...
“There it is.” A little peanut shaped blob appeared. It was different from the first scan where it was just a blip of something.  This time, a head was clearly taking shape. “That’s your baby.”
“It’s like a little peanut alien,” Frank said.
“Frankie,” Abby whined.
“What? Cricket, it’s a peanut. It's our...” he stopped as Dr. Montgomery turned on the sound and a rapid noise echoed in the room. “Is that...”
“Baby’s heartbeat. Its nice and strong, about 150 beats per minute, which is perfect.”
“They are perfect,” Abby breathed. A tear ran down her face.
“Cricket, what’s wrong?”
“I just thought with the stress, that I did something to the baby.”
Dr. Montgomery cleaned Abby up. “Abby, you are doing everything right. I know that the hearing was stressful, but everything is perfect. I don’t think you need an amniocentesis, so I would relax and enjoy.”
Abby nodded as Frank said, “thanks Doc.”
“Pictures will be up front, and I want to see you in four weeks. Good luck, Frank.”
As Abby and Frank made their way up, they started to talk about baby names. “I like Emily for a girl or Steven for a boy,” Abby said.
“I’m ok with Emily but Steven? Steve Adler?” Frank twisted his mouth in disgust.
“It sounds good.”
“No Cricket it doesn’t. How about Daniel?”
“Dan Adler? I mean, its ok.”
Frank sighed.  “We have time right?”
“Yes, we do.” Abby leaned into him. “When are we going to announce this?”
“Let’s do it after the playoffs. You won’t be showing for a few more weeks, and we have the box, so you’ll be hidden.”
“Ok, now if we can only guarantee that Mary will keep her mouth shut,” Abby muses.
“That’s like asking Johnny not to call himself the ‘Human Torch’. Just impossible,” Frank smiled and kissed her head. “But keep dreaming.”
Tumblr media
The Dodgers make it through the Wild Card and Division series, defeating The San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cub, respectively. Johnny had pitched a no hitter in the first game against the New York Mets, but a rouge bounce made Frank miss a ground ball in game two, letting the Mets win that game. Fortunately, the Dodgers held themselves together for games three and four and were sitting on the verge of their 13th World Series appearance.
Frank was pumped. He was already a two time World Series winner with Boston and he wanted to make his new team proud. They were away in New York, but it was Saturday, so his family and Abby’s parents were able to make the game.
Abby: No matter what, Mary, peanut and I love you so much Frankie. Good luck baby!
Frank smiled as he finished dressing.  Johnny was also looking at his phone, smiling like a goofball.  “What has gotten into you? Or should I say who?”
Johnny dropped his phone.  He scrambled to pick it up. “Nothing, no one, what, wait, huh?”
Frank grabbed his chest and laughed so hard it brought attention from the entire team.  “What is so funny Adler?” Mookie Betts asked.
“Johnny Storm, our own Human Torch, has a girl!” Frank said through gasps of air.  “Pay up losers!”
Over half the team grumbled as they pulled out their wallets with Frank and a couple of others holding out their hands. “What the actual fuck is going on?” Johnny asked.
“I told the guys you were going to be infatuated with a girl.  Thanks for this,” Frank holds up his hand holding up a few bills.
“You bet on me meeting a girl?”
“No, that’s a stupid bet. I bet you would fall for a girl. Told them I introduced you to one and said I think this is the one for him and Betts said there wasn’t a chance in hell and others agreed so we made a small yet rather fruitful wager.”
“You couldn’t have waited until the end of the season, could your Torch?” Betts slapped his back.
Johnny tried to be angry but instead smiled. “Hell no. Have you see her?” He showed off a picture of him and Katie together by the beach.  “She is smart, gorgeous...”
“And should have no business with you,” Kershaw said. “She is smoking.”
“She likes baseball, hangs out with Mary and likes it and she...” he stopped himself. “Never mind. All I’m saying is that I hit the jackpot with my girl so you all can fuck off now.”  He turned back to his locker to finish getting ready.
“$100 says he’s engaged if we win the World Series,” Kershaw says.
“No bet. I think he’ll do it at Christmas.  More romantic,” Frank says. Johnny just flips them the bird and the team laughs.
The game is tense, but Johnny manages to throw only one hit the entire game.  Mookie hits a grand slam and seals the Dodgers fate to another World Series. After the celebration in the locker room, Frank showers and heads out. He sees his wife, daughter and best friend in the family room, Mary asleep in her grandfather’s arms, Abby leaning against Scott and Susie in Marco’s lap. Johnny walked in right after and saw his sister. Before Johnny could say anything, Frank covered his mouth. “Shut up,” he whispered.
“That’s my sister,” Johnny pointed.
“Have you not noticed she been dating my brother in law?” Frank hissed. “Since the All Star game.”
“Seriously? I thought she was with that nerd Reed.”
Frank sighed and ran a hand over his face. “According to Abby, Reed said he didn’t have time to date because of some crap project about a cloud in space, who the fuck knows. Anyway, when everyone was trying to find Mary, I guess Susie broke down in the backyard and Marco comforted her. One thing led to another, and they started seeing each other in LA.”
Johnny looked at his sister.  “Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Geez, I wonder,” Frank deadpanned.
“Yeah, alright, you don’t have to be a dick about it. Let’s take them to the hotel and get some sleep before we fly home.” He took another look at his sister. “She’s happy, and he’s a good guy?”
“I couldn’t trust anyone better to protect this family.”
Tumblr media
The Dodger has two days off before they have to start their series with Boston. The irony was not lost on Frank. Playing the team that had traded him after missing the playoffs last year would either be glorious or gut-wrenching. They are starting on the road this time and Frank is nervous.  Not for the game, but for the fact that Abby had now been dealing with a streak of morning sickness that left her pale, dehydrated and bedridden.
“Cricket, maybe I can miss the first game? Just until I know you are better.” He smoothed her hair away from her clammy forehead.
“Frankie, you can’t miss. Susie said she would stay with me and Nugget and Marco. Scottie and Steve are going to go and support. If I feel better, I’ll fly out with Mary for game two.”
“But...”
“No, Frank, this is your job.  Win this, babe, and come home and finish it for me here in LA. I promise, if something is wrong, we will call. Your baby just likes to test me is all.”
Frank ran a hand through his hair.  “The minute something is wrong?”
“You’ll be the first call, ok? I love you.”
He knelt next to the side of the bed. “I love you Peanut. Be nice to momma, ok?” He kissed her stomach and then kissed her forehead. “I love you, Cricket. So very much.”  One last kiss, he grabbed his suitcase and was out the door.
Mary, Susie and Abby watched their boys play in Boston. They took game one with ease, Frank making a spectacular dive in the fourth for a double play.  Johnny hit two homers in the ninth securing the win.  Game two was a different story.  Boston came to play, outscoring Los Angeles by ten.  Abby flipped off the TV at the end of the game, tugging on Mary’s ponytail. “At least Frank hit it.”
“But they lost.”
“I know, but you have to look at the positives, Nugget. I’m sure Dad would appreciate it if we kept to the positives.  It’ll make flying home easier.”
“I guess.” Mary shrugged. “I don’t remember Boston being that good.”
“Me neither.”
Frank and the rest of the team came home in a dejected state. Losing that hard took its toll but it just made the Dodgers want to work that much harder.  He hadn’t mentioned it to Abby, but a couple of the Boston guys jeered at him when his was on base.  Fans did too, during game two. It had messed with his head a little bit. Johnny had heard it and reminded Frank that he hadn’t chosen to leave Boston. It still stung.
The next three games were at home and the Dodgers took the lead after five, with spectacular performances from Kershaw and Storm. Betts hit homers in every game and Frank had two RBIs. Abby had been feeling better to attend the games, making Frank feel better knowing his girl was at the stadium with him.
Game six and the teams were back in Boston.  It had been a close game, but Frank fouled up in the ninth allowing the winning run on base. But former Dodger Justin Turner would not be denied. He had come over during Frank’s trade and had something to prove.  He launched a walk off rocket off a fast ball from Joe Kelly that went right over the famous Green Monster wall. Joe and the rest of the team walked off of the field with the crowd going absolutely wild in the background.
As Frank woke up on the day of game seven, he stared at the ceiling. This was the last day to prove to everyone that, despite the year of chaos he had, he was still the best at this game. He turned and looked at his beautiful wife. Abby’s hair cascaded down her naked back, finding comfort of no clothes during her fourteenth week of pregnancy.  Frank moved a piece of hair that had fallen over her face back. Winning her back, completing his mission to marry the love of his life, he knew he had already won the year.
Abby curled more into his side and Frank wrapped his arm firmly around her. He could snooze for a few more before the chaos of the day began.
Tumblr media
The game was tight and scoreless. Both teams were playing with no errors. It was the top of the ninth and Frank was on second, having a lucky bounce allowing him to get the double.  Johnny was now at bat and had a two count. Frank took a small lead of the base and could see a fastball would be delivered. Johnny read it perfectly and it bounced in left field. Frank ran for third and the third base coach waved him through to home. Frank slid and beat the throw home.
Dodgers –1 – Boston – 0.
The next batter strikes out, but the damage has been done.  It's up to the defense to hold off Boston for the next half of the inning.  Johnny came in as relief to Kershaw and has been on his game all night. He quickly dispatches a batter but walked the next and now it's do or die for Boston.  And Justin Turner is at bat.
Johnny settles, a shake of his head, then a nod, and let go of his patented fast ball. Strike.  He gets the ball back and takes a breath.  He looks at Frank, who gives him a reassuring nod and he turns back.  Another nod and Johnny threw his change-up, leaving Turner swinging.
One more.
Johnny sets, rears back and lets go of the ball.
It's perfect.
Until the crack of the bat sounds.
And Frank watches as it sails over the right field wall.
Boston has won the World Series.

When Frank woke up this morning, he was expecting a quiet morning, his Cricket meeting him for lunch before practice.  He did not foresee the nightmare he was walking into.
The phone rang and Frank saw his cell phone sitting on the bar top.  He answered.  “Hello?”
“Hello, is this Frank Adler?”
“Speaking.”
“Mr. Adler, this is Dr. Green from USC emergency room.  We have an Abigail Hernandez that has been admitted and you are listed as her emergency contact.”
“Is she ok?”
“She was admitted last night via emergency transport with some severe injuries. We need you to come down right away.”
“Is she...oh god,” Frank dropped the phone and his knees buckled. Scott made a grab for him.
“Johnny!”  Scott picked up the phone, “I’m sorry Frank dropped the phone.”
“I understand. Miss Hernandez is at USC and...”
“No, I understand, we’ll be right over.” Scott hung up as Johnny was trying to coax Frank into a chair.  “Frank, we have to go.”
“Nugget? Cricket?”
“Shit, Johnny can you drive him to USC Medical and I will wait for Mary and meet you there.”
“Yes, of course.  C’mon man, we need to get to your girl.” When he didn’t move, Johnny got right into Frank’s face. “Adler, are you with us?”
Frank’s eyes look lost. “Is she...”
“We don’t know. We got to get to the hospital.”
Frank nodded and grabbed his phone and wallet.  Johnny climbed into his SUV and Frank was in the passenger seat. He couldn’t speak. What the hell had happened? She was fine, he told himself.  He repeated that to himself as Johnny drove as fast as he could.
Once they reached the hospital, Frank and Johnny ran into hospital.  “Hi, I’m looking for Abigail Hernandez.”
“She’s in the critical care unit. Fifth floor.”
In the elevator, Johnny tried to comfort Frank.  “I’m sure it's just a precaution.”
“Right.”
“Frank...”
“Johnny,” Frank turned to face his friend. “She needs to be ok.”
“She will be.”
“You don’t understand. I can’t lose her. I just... fuck, I just got her back.” A single tear fell from his eye and down his cheek.
“Let’s just talk to the doctors, ok?”  The doors opened and Frank went to the desk. “For Abigail Hernandez?”
“You are?”
“Frank Adler.”
“Are you family?”
He closed his eyes.  “I’m her husband.  Can I see my wife please?”
Tumblr media
Two weeks prior... Las Vegas  Frank stared at the little chapel and back at his girl. “You’re not serious.” She smiled shyly. “Abigail, I want to marry you, but I want to do it right. I want to propose, I want to ask... well I want to do right by you.”   “What were you going to say?” Abby’s blood was like ice running through her. “What were you going to say Frank?”  “I want to ask your dad again.  For permission.”   “What? Again?”  “I had asked your dad right before I started the playoff run. Five years ago. He said I didn’t need his permission, but I had his blessing to finish what I had started and become the man he wanted for his daughter.”    Abby’s eyes began to sparkle with unshed tears. “You did?” Her voice cracked a little.  “I was going to ask that Christmas but..”.Frank sighed, letting his head fall forward.  “I want to do this right.”  “Frankie, I don’t want to live my life without you anymore.  I know my parents will be thrilled.”   Frank looked into her eyes. “You deserve more Cricket. You deserve the world.”   “I have the world when I’m with you.” She kissed him softly. “Let’s call them.”   After speaking with her parents, who were thrilled at the idea, even if they missed this one, Frank promised they would do it again in Boston, however way Abby wanted it. Her dad gave his blessing. Frank looked at his girl as they walked back to the hotel. “No, wait I have to do this right.”   “Frankie?”  Frank pulled out his wallet and grabbed something.  “I’ve had this for almost six years and it’s yours baby.” He held up a ring.  And in the middle of Las Vegas, in front of the fountains that Abby loved, he got down on one knee.  “Marry me?”  “Yes!” Frank pulled her into his arms and spun her around, ignoring all the people that were clapping for them. He put the ring on and kissed her softly.  “Give me a day, Cricket.  One day, so we can make it as special as possible and then after the season, we have another one. But I would like your parents to be here with Mary and Scott.”   “Ok, I can do that.” Abby smiled. “Tomorrow, June 13th  is our day.”   After making arrangements to fly Mary and Scott and Abby’s parents in, Abby and Frank married at the chapel in Bellagio instead of by Elvis. Because Frank wanted this to be a day to be remembered. The day he married the love of his life.
Tumblr media
Frank couldn’t hold in his distress when he was allowed into Abby’s room.  She was hooked up to lines in her arms, her head wrapped in gauze.  Her beautiful eyes were closed but he could see the bruising starting to form.  Her wrist was in a cast.  “Cricket,” he whispered.  The only thing that he knew was she was alive by the heart monitor and the rising of her chest.
“Mr. Adler?”
Frank looked at a doctor in scrubs holding a tablet. “Yes?”
“I’m Dr. Green. I was the attending on duty when your wife was brought in.”
“Oh.” Frank heart clenched as he heard Abby being referred to as his wife for the first time.  “Is she going to be ok?”
“Her injuries are moderate, but she should make a full physical recovery.  She had a cut to the scalp, a broken rib and wrist and a lot of contusions or bruising on her body.”
“Was it a car accident?” Frank looked back at his wife. “Sorry, nobody explained...”
“I’m not sure.  A neighbor found her on her lawn.  He called 911 and came in with her. He’s in the waiting room.”
Johnny cleared his throat.  “Was she at her home?”
“Yeah, the police will want to speak with you, Mr. Adler.”
Frank nodded.  “Can I just sit with her for a minute?  Is she... can she...”
“She is under heavy sedation right now for the pain.  She can wake up at any time. If she is in pain, there is a pump for the pain medicine.  All she has to do is click the receiver.”
“Thank you, umm, I … thank you.”
“I’ll be back to check on her.” The doctor left the room and Frank moved forward to sit on a chair next to her bed. He looked her over, wondering what had happened to his girl.  A sob broke through, and Johnny was right behind him, squeezing his shoulder.
“Cricket, I’m here,” he sobbed, bowing his head. “Baby, please wake up and look at me.” He kissed her hand and kept staring at her until another knock on the door. “Mr. Adler?” Frank looked up and saw two officers at the door. “Yes?”
“We just wanted to talk to you concerning Dr. Hernandez. We understand this is a difficult time but...”
“No, it's fine. I want to know what happened.  The last time I saw her... she was fine.  She was perfect. I don’t understand what happened.”
“Uh, Mr. Storm if you could step out for just a few minutes.”  Johnny nodded.  “I’ll be outside Frank if you need anything.  I’m going to call Todd.”
“Thanks.” Frank turned back to the officers. “Please tell me what happened to her.”
“That’s what we are trying to find out. Why was Dr. Hernandez at the home?”
“She was moving out of the home she shared with Michael Weiss. She was leaving him after we got married. We had previously been together and separated and we reconnected. We got married about two weeks ago in Las Vegas.” Frank looked back at Abby.  “She went back to get her stuff. I saw her at the stadium with John Storm and she kissed me goodbye.”
“And last evening?”
“I was with Storm and my nanny Scott Evans at my home.  My niece Mary was at a slumber party.”
“Did you hear from Dr. Hernandez?”
“No, nothing. It's not unusual. Sometimes when she’s working, she gets focused. When I hadn’t heard from her this morning, I waited because it was still early.” Frank wiped his eyes.  “Please tell me what happened.”
“We are still trying to figure that out.  We need to speak to her when she wakes up.  But when her neighbor, Mr. Thomas, called 911, he said he heard someone screaming.  He came out and a car peeled away from the home but didn’t see the driver.  He walked over and saw Abigail walking out and collapsed in his arms.  They rushed her here.  When we searched the home, that’s when we found her ID.  It took us awhile to get someone from the Dodgers to get her emergency contact information.”
“Was Weiss there?”
“We haven’t found evidence that he was in the residence at the time.  They do have a camera set up and Mr. Weiss was seen leaving via Taxi a couple of weeks ago with a suitcase but no proof he had returned.”
“Ok, ok, but no video of who may have done this?” Frank clenched his fist.
“No, the camera didn’t pick up anything, they are just out of frame.”
“Frankie?”
Frank whipped around to see Abby moving slightly. “Cricket! Oh god!” He ran back to her side and took her hand kissing it.  “Baby, I’m here.”
“Uh, it hurts,” she cried. “Frankie, it hurts!”
“Ok, baby, ok, here,” pressing the trigger for the pain meds in her hand.  She pressed it a couple of times.  Her body began to relax, and she looked at Frank. “Diane,” she whispered.
“What baby?”
“Diane,” she repeated as she closed her eyes again.
“Cricket, baby?”
Abby fell asleep again.
“Who is Diane?” the detective asked.
“The only Diane we know is my sister. The last time I saw her was during our custody hearing when I was granted sole custody of her daughter, my niece.” Frank shook his head.  “I don’t understand.”
“We’ll look into it.” The detective handed him a card.  “When she is ready, have her give us a call. I’m thankful she is going to make a full recovery.” Frank shook their hands and they left.  Johnny came back in.
“How is she?”
“She woke up for a moment, but the pain meds put her back to sleep.”  Frank stroked her hair. “Thank you, Johnny, for being here.”
“You’re one of my best friends Frank. Anything you need?”
“I need her to wake up and I need to know why she’s calling out my sister’s name.”
Tumblr media
Twenty-four hours later...
Frank leaned back in the recliner.  He was so tired, but he couldn’t sleep. Not until Abby was awake and with them again.  She had been in and out of consciousness while the pain med took over.  She would see him but begin to cry immediately.  The hardest part was calling her parents and explaining what had happened.  The detectives still didn’t have answers.  Mike was nowhere to be found. Diane had dropped off the face of the earth a year ago.  His mother was no help. Frank was frustrated.
Scott kept Mary at home, with Frank explaining that Abby was not feeling well and he was going to be staying with her.  Mary cried, wanting to help Abby like she had done for her.  It broke his heart but he promised that as soon as Abby was up for it, she would call.
The Dodgers were concerned that a member of their staff was attacked.  But after learning from Frank some of the details of their relationship, they put Frank on the bereavement list for the time being, offering no other explanation to the press except that it was a family emergency.
Frank kept vigil at his wife’s side, never letting go of her hand if he could help it.  He drifted off into a fitful sleep and thought back to his wedding night.
Tumblr media
After their ceremony, Frank and Abby had dinner with their families before they left again. After Abby kissed Mary and promised her they would have a girl’s day, Frank and Abby head back to their room.  On their floor, Frank swept Abby into his arms with her giggles and walked in.  “What the...”  The room had been transformed.  Candles and roses had been spread around the room.  A bottle of champagne on ice was in the middle with a note.   Congratulations from the Bellagio  Frank smiled and popped it open, pouring both glasses.  “For you, Dr. Adler.”   Abby smiled.  “I like that. To us, Mr. Adler.”   “To us, my Cricket.” Frank took a sip, never taking his eyes off of her.  “God, you are beautiful.”  She blushed and hid her face.  He took her glass and set it down.  He grasped her chin to tilt it to meet his eyes. Her eyes were shining with unshed tears. “No hiding. You’re my wife and I will tell you that you are beautiful every day.”   “Frankie...” A single tear slipped down her cheek.   “No Cricket. I don’t know what he’s done to you, but you are the most beautiful girl in the world.  You are the best doctor in the world.  You’re my Cricket and I love you so much.” He kissed her softly. She held onto his shirt as he walked her back to their bed. “Can I make love to you, Abigail?”  “Yes,” she breathed. He spun her around and pulled down the zipper of her dress. It was a simple ivory dress that set off her tan skin and dark hair. Frank skimmed her shoulders and pushed the straps down gently.   “Fuck, I’m a lucky bastard.” Frank let his eyes wander over his wife. “Perfect.” His fingertips skated over her smooth skin. “Mine.”   “Frankie,” she moaned as he teased through the silk of her panties. “Please.”   “You need me, Cricket?”  “I’ve needed you for five years. Make me forget the last five years.”   It was slow, meticulous and perfect. Frank made slow love to his wife. The wife that should have been in his bed the last five years.  He made sure that she felt everything.  Every thrust, every touch, every bit of pleasure she deserved.  Her eyes shed the tears she had been holding in. He was hers, finally.   As they reached the end, Franks stared into her brown eyes.  Eyes that made him lost in the universe. “I love you.”   “I love you.”
Tumblr media
Frank feels his hair ruffle, a tender touch. He slowly blinks his eyes and lifts his head and sees the most beautiful brown eyes look at him. “Abby,” he breathes. He reached up to cup her bruised face. “My Cricket, you’re with me.”
“Frankie, what happened?” Abby was sore, in pain in some places and confused.
“You have blows to your head, your ribs and a broken wrist.” Frank kisses the wrap around her wrist. “We don’t know what happened.  We’ve been waiting for you to wake up and tell us what you remember.” Frank looks at her eyes.  “You’re still beautiful.”
Abby cracked a giggle but hissed at the pain in her side. “Fuck that hurts. Ahh,” her head rests back on the pillow. “You’re a shit liar, Adler.”
Frank shakes his head. “Not lying.  I promised that I would tell you every day that you’re beautiful.” He sighed. “The detectives want to talk to you, love. But first, are you hungry, thirsty, horny?”
Another giggle escaped. “Frankie, don’t make me laugh,” she groaned.
“Sorry love. Seriously, anything?”
“I want to see Mary. I want to see our girl.”
“Sweetheart, we should wait. She's gonna have questions and I don’t know how to answer her.” Frank kissed her head. “Do you remember anything?”
Abby chewed her lip. “Yes.”
“Was it Diane?”
She nodded. “Frankie, she said something right before.” Frank grounded his teeth, trying to keep calm but Abby swallowed. “Mike, he’s going to be a bigger problem.”
“Why do you say that?”
“I think Mike is Mary’s father.”

Coffee.
The essential nectar to start any day.
Goes great with a day off and starting the morning slow with a naked woman in his bed.
At least, Frank thinks so as he carries two mugs up to his room. Abby is still flat out on her pillow, and he can’t help but smile. She’s beautiful and his. But the next big step was still to come.  He places a mug on her side before doing the same on his and climbing back in. He pulled out his phone and dialed his lawyer.
“Good Morning, Barber and Associates, how may I direct your call?”
“Andy Barber please.”
“May I ask who is calling?”
“Frank Adler.”
“Just a moment.”  The line moved to hold music as Frank ran his fingers through Abby’s hair.  He heard a click before he heard, “Morning Frank. Kinda early for you.”
Frank chuckled. “Kinda but not for you. How are you, Andy?”
“I’m good Frank, just getting my day started.”
“Same. But I did call with a purpose.”
“And what is that?”
“I want to know what the adoption process would be.  To adopt Mary.”
The line was silent for a beat. “Just you or...”
“No, Abby and I want to formally adopt Mary, but I wanted to know the steps, know any obstacles that we may have.”
“No problem.” Frank could hear Andy scratching on something. “Let me look into the original custody agreement and see if we file this in Massachusetts or in California.”  He stopped.  “I’m happy for you, Frank.”
“Thanks Andy.  We’re gonna tell Mary today.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem but I’ll get back two you soon.  Give my love to Abby.”
“Will do.  Thanks Andy.”  He hung up the phone and looked down to see his bride looking up at him. “Morning Cricket.”
“Morning love. How’s Andy?”
“Good. Sends his love.” Frank sipped his coffee.  “Asked him to investigate the adoption process. He’s gonna look at the custody agreement and let us know the easiest way and if we have any obstacles. Might take a couple of days.”
Abby sat up.  “Really?”
“I told you; I want this and I'm gonna make it happen.”
Abby giggled as she threw herself into Frank’s arms.  He adjusted her onto his lap so she could straddle him. She took his face in her hands. “We’ll be a proper family?”
“We already are the day you took me back Cricket. I don’t need paperwork for that, but I want the world to know that Mary is ours.”
She leaned in and kissed him hard. “I think today is a pancake day.”
“Its not Saturday.”
“No, but it’s the first day of the rest of our lives.”
Tumblr media
Mary bounced down the stairs, Dodger always close on her heels when she smelled it.  “Pancakes!” She races down the last steps to see Abby and Frank cooking in the kitchen.  She scrambled onto a high top at the counter.  “Pancakes!” she said again.
“Good morning to you too Nugget,” Frank said.
“Sorry, good morning!” she chirped. “It’s not Saturday.”
“I know, love, just felt like having a special day,” Abby said as she flipped a pancake.
Frank set the table with fresh berries, juice and coffee and they sat with Scott joining them.  They chatted and ate, their family unit enjoying time together.  As they were finishing. Frank cleared his throat. “Nugget, we wanted to talk to you about something.”  Scott made a move to leave but Frank shook his head.  “I called Uncle Andy this morning.”
“Is something wrong?” Mary looked back and forth with her adults.
“No, honey, nothing is wrong.  I wanted to get some information about changing our living arrangements.”
“What does that mean?”
Frank looked at Abby and gave a small wink.  Abby smiled and took a deep breath.  “What do you think of us asking the court to official adopt you?”
Mary froze. The tension in the room was palpable. “Adopt me?” she whispered.
“Yes, adopt you,” Frank said. “Make me and Abby your parents, officially.” No other noise was heard.  Even Dodger knew to stay quiet. Frank watched Mary’s face to see if he could read what she was feeling.  When he saw a single, fat tear run down her cheek, he moved from his seat to kneel before her. “Mary?”
“You want to be my daddy?” she whispered.
“Baby, I already am. This is just to make it official.” He cupped her cheek, “I told you before, you’re my girl and now I want the whole world to recognize it. I love you, my sweet girl, my Nugget.”
May threw herself into Frank’s arms and held him tight, sobbing. Frank soothed her, speaking soft words and rubbing her back.  As soon as she was calm enough, she launched herself at Abby. “Oh, my sweet girl.”
“Momma, promise you won’t leave again.”
Abby choked. Momma. That one word shifted her axis. “No, Mary, momma won’t leave you again.” She hugged her tighter as Frank wrapped his arms around both of his girl.  Scott snapped a photo of the moment.
Where three people became one family.
Tumblr media
A couple of weeks went by.  Andy had called back the same day and announced that as Diane had waived her rights as a parent and no father was listed, it should be smooth sailing to petition for adoption.  “The only thing that may come up is that the natural father can submit a DNA test to prove paternity and contest,” Andy said. “But since Mike is in the wind, it’s unlikely he’ll do this.  I’m confident that the adoption would go through without issue.”
The family decided that they would wait to the end of the season to pursue the adoption to allow Frank to concentrate on getting the Dodgers to the playoffs.
Abby was sitting in her office at the stadium when her phone rang. She answered without looking at her phone. “Hello?”
“May I speak to Dr. Hernandez please?”
“Speaking.”
“Dr. Hernandez, it’s Detective Diskant in Boston.”  Abby snapped her head in attention.
“Hi, Detective. Is something wrong?”
“No, ma’am, just wanted to let you know that we have Diane Adler in custody here in Boston.”
Abby sucked in a breath. “She’s in Boston?”
“Yes.  We have admitted her to the psychiatric ward of the hospital. She is not a danger to herself but since she was wanted for assault and acting strange when detained, the doctor on duty found it would be in her best interest.”
“Wow, ok. Umm, do we, I mean, does Frank have to do anything? As her next of kin?”
“No, we have gotten in touch with her mother, who is fine with everything.  Since you are the victim, we wanted to give you a heads up.”
“I appreciate that Detective.  I’ll let Frank know.” Abby hesitated. “Do I – do I have to see her?”
She heard the detective sigh.  “If we go to trial, yes. But I will be there with you every step of the way. She won’t get to you.”
“Thank you, Detective. I’m at work, so I should go.”
“If it’s any consolation Doc, she’s getting the help she needs.”
“I know. Still doesn’t stop the hurt that my best friend did this to me.”
Tumblr media
A couple of hours later, Frank was waiting but the entrance for Abby so they could go home.  When 20 minutes went by, he went up to the offices.  He found her in her office, sitting in her chair, staring out the window. “Cricket?”  She jumped at the sound of his voice.  “Whoa, hey, baby, it’s me.”
“Frankie, shit I’m sorry, I was a million miles away.”
“I can see that. Everything ok?”
“Yeah, yeah.” She went back to staring out the window.
“Cricket, love, what’s wrong?” Frank went to kneel in front of her. When a tear rolled down her cheek, he frowned, wiping it away. “Abby?”
“Detective Diskant called earlier. They found Diane. She’s being held in the psych ward.” Abby wiped the tears on her face furiously.  “I don’t even know why I’m crying.  She put us through hell.”
“But she was your best friend. Basically, your sister.” Frank tucked Abby’s hair from her face and behind her ear. “Fifteen years of friendship just doesn’t go away.”
“I know that. At least I thought I knew that. But,” Abby huffed, “I’m just so angry at her.  I’m angry she left Mary. She just threw her away.  Who does that? I mean, I want my girl, but I just don’t understand.  And then she was with Mike and not with Mike or whatever their messed-up friendship is. And now I’m angry at myself for letting myself be with him.”
“Abby…”
“No Frank, it’s not ok. They did all of this bad stuff to us, and we lost five years because of them. Why? Why did this happen? Why can’t we just have a normal life?” She cried into Frank’s shoulder, sobs racking her body.
All Frank could do was hold his wife. She wasn’t wrong; this entire situation was messed up, but he wouldn’t change it because it gave him Abby and Mary. As she calmed, Frank turned over an idea in his head. “Baby, why don’t you meet with her?”
“What?” Abby pulled back.  “Meet with her? Why would I do that?”
Frank shrugged. “Get some closure? Air out all these feelings that you are having and direct them to the person who needs to hear them.”  She sat quietly for a few moments.  “Look, Cricket, maybe it helps, maybe it doesn’t. But you can’t hang onto these feelings.  It will eat you alive.  And for the record,” he sighed, “if I had the option, I would ask Mike the same questions.  He was my best friend, and he did all of this.”
“Can I think about it?”
“Of course, love.” He kissed her forehead.  “Ready to head home? We promised Nugget burgers tonight and Scott has a date.”
“Ooh, with the guy again?”
Frank chuckled.  “Yeah, I think so. Let me take you home, my love.”
Tumblr media
A couple of days later, Abby is pacing nervously, waiting for Susie to show. “I’m here, sorry I’m here,” Susie says walking into Abby’s home office.  “Ready to do this?”
“Yeah, just nervous.  I mean Frank said that it would give me closure but just the thought of asking if I can, just makes me want to vomit.”
Susie wrapped an arm around her.  “Its ok.  I know it’s tough with Frank on the road but it’s only a couple more months of games before their home.  Well, unless the make a playoff run.”
Abby rolled her eyes.  “Don’t remind me.  That first one, with Mary only being a year or so, was brutal. But whatever.  Ok, here I go.”  She pulled out the card and dialed.
“Boston Metropolitan Police, how may I direct your call?”
“Detective Paul Diskant, please.”
“One moment.”  Annoying hold music came on before she heard, “Diskant.”
“Hello Detective, this is Abby Adler.”
“Dr. Hernandez, how can I help you?”
“First, it’s now Adler, had it changed a few days ago.”
“Noted. How may I help you Dr. Adler?”
“I was wondering if there was a way to meet with Diane.”
“Can I ask why?”
Abby chewed her lip. “I need answers. Detective, you have to understand…”
He cut her off. “That she is your sister-in-law and former friend.” She hears his sigh. “Look Dr. Adler, I don’t know if this is a good idea.”
“Paul,” she took a chance on his name. “I need to find closure and a trial won’t do that. I just need to get this off my chest so I can move forward in my life.”  She took a breath; “I need to be back in Boston in a couple of weeks. Can you at least consider it?”
There was a beat before she heard him again. “How does your husband say no to you?”
“He doesn’t.”
Paul chuckled. “Fair enough. I’ll make arrangements for you to see her when you’re back. Just let me know the details.  Here’s my cell.” He rattles off a phone number. “Is someone coming with you?”
“I might ask my brother to come with me.”
“Abby, just so you know, I’m letting you use my first name. But you make a good argument. I’ll see you when you are back in town.”
“Thanks Detective.” She hung up and turned back to Susie. “He’ll do it.” She stood up and blanched.
“Great.” Susie frowned. “Abby? You look pale.” Abby swayed a little. “Oh my… Marco!” Abby would have to hurt her head had Susie not caught her head.  Her brother ran into the room.
“Susie, what the… Abby!” He ran to her side. “Baby, get the car!” Susie ran out the door as Marco scooped up Abby in his arms.  “Abby, c’mon princessa, wake up.”  Susie drove as they took her to the hospital.
Tumblr media
A couple of hours later, Abby blinked her eyes against the harsh light. When she could finally open her eyes, she saw Marco and Susie sitting next to her.  “Marco? Susie?”
“Hey Abby girl,” he took her hands. “How are you feeling?”
“Tired. And thirsty.” She tried to sit up but laid back down. “What happened?”
“Doctors say you’re dehydrated. They’ve had an IV in for a couple of hours to give you fluids and some vitamins.  What’s going on sis? You know better than this.”
Abby was confused. When was the last time she had anything to drink?  The stress of Diane and Mike had clouded her mind. “I don’t know, Marco, I’ve just…”
“Hey, its ok. I’ve called Frank and told him to stay on the road for now. He’s waiting for your call.” A knock on the door turned his head, “oh hey Doc.”
“Mr. Hernandez, Dr. Hernandez, how are you feeling?”
“A little lightheaded and thirsty.” She smiled weakly.
“As expected, given how dehydrated you are. Is it ok to go over your blood results with you and your husband?”
“Oh, Marco isn’t my husband, he’s my brother.” She giggled as Marco grimaced. “Susie is his girlfriend but feel free to discuss.”
“Sorry,” the doctor said sheepishly. “Well, everything looks good besides the lower level of electrolytes, which is expected with the dehydration.  But I’m guessing it just boils down to the first stages of your pregnancy.”
The world stopped.
“Want to run that by me again?”
"You’re pregnant.  I’m guessing just a couple of weeks, no more than five.  You probably haven’t noticed the symptoms yet. But it would have shown on a pregnancy test…” he trailed off. “You haven’t yet, did you?”
“No,” Abby’s lip was trembling.
“I’m sorry. Yes, you’re pregnant. We can do an intravaginal sonogram to check the progress. But for now, I’ll let you finish this IV bag and then rest and hydrate at home.”  The doctor moved to leave. “Again, I’m sorry for how I announced it but congratulations.”
As soon as the doctor left, Abby looked at Marco and Susie.  “Not a word.” She took a moment. “Oh my god. I’m pregnant.”
“We’re you guys trying?” Susie asked gently.
“No but we weren’t stopping it either. We wanted to wait until the adoption went through. How am I going to tell him?”
“We’ll think of something,” Marco said. “Making me an uncle again.” He hugged his sister.
“Not a word to Frank. For now.” Abby smiled. “He’s going to be so happy.”

San Francisco is usually beautiful in late Spring. The air wasn’t sweltering yet, the flowers were in bloom.
And the rivalry with Los Angeles was in full swing.
Frank gritted his teeth at the thought of having to see Bobby Fuller again.  That asshole had been traded two years after the Vegas incident and he and Frank had been at each others throats during that time. So seeing him with the Giants was hard.  The Dodgers would be playing the Giants more often than he did with the Red Sox.
During the first inning, there was almost a full out brawl when the pitcher almost hit Frank in the head with an errant pitch. Frank got into his face but never made a violent move.  The benches were  given a warning and play continued.
Abby sat in the dugout as the trainer on the field, a responsibility that she enjoyed because not only was she involved with the team, but she was also close to Frank.  They didn’t interact much, knowing the TV cameras were everywhere, but Frank gave her a side smirk every once in a while, allowing the butterflies to gather in her stomach. When he could, he gave her a gentle touch, so she knew he was there.
It seemed the game calmed down for a few innings until the top of the sixth.  Frank was back at bat and observed a pitching changeup.  The new pitcher, Smith, stopped to hear something from Fuller and then warmed up. Frank was curious but he let it go, concentrating on the pitch. The first one was low and inside, the second was away.  Frank smirked. He knew he just needed to be patient.
Except when the fastball went wide of the box. And bounced off of Frank’s hand and into his face.
He dropped to the ground, not moving. Abby grabbed her bag and followed another trainer out to the field. “Adler? Frank? Can you hear me?” Abby looked at Dave, the other trainer. “We need to move him. Get the brace.”  After fitting Frank with the neck brace, Dave and Abby carefully turned him over. “Oh Frankie,” she whispered.
Frank had blood coming from the side of his face. “Fuck,” he moaned.  He blinked. “Cricket?”
“Oh thank God. Let’s get the backboard,” she ordered Dave. As the EMTs came in, she smiled down at Frank. “If you wanted my attention, there are other ways Franklin.”
“Full name treatment. I’m an injured man Cricket.” He smiled but immediately grimaced. Johnny came over to check on him.  “Hey man.”
“Adler, jesus, are you ok?”
“Maybe I should have ducked?”
Abby smacks his shoulder. “We’re gonna get him checked out Storm.”  They loaded him to a cart as the crowd in San Francisco clapped and Frank gave a wave.
The ride to the hospital was quick and Abby spoke with the attending physician to advise what happened.  She stood back in the examination room as the doctors on call checked him over.  The lead doctor came to speak to Abby. “Dr. Hernandez, it looks like Mr. Adler has a very minor concussion, a contusion on his face that will require a couple of stitches and a broken pinkie finger.  My recommendation is three weeks of healing.”
Abby let out a sigh of relief. “That's better news than I had hoped for.  I agree with your assessment.  I will let the team know. Thank you so much.”
“We can release him in your care today but no flying for 48 hours. Let me know if you need anything else?”
“Just copies of his records for the team.” They shook hands and Abby went to Frank. “How do you feel about a small vacation?”
“That bad?”
“Broken pinkie, a small cut that needs stitches, and a small concussion. The League is putting you into concussion protocol, which is two weeks and the pinkie will need an extra week.  I’m sorry love, but three weeks on the injury reserved.”
“That’s all of June,” Frank whines as he leans his head back.  Abby runs her nails through his scalp gently and he lets out a hum of contentment. “Will you stay with me Cricket?” He looked at her with puppy eyes.
“I will have to work a little but yes, I can stay with you.”
“What about...”
“He’s back east with the firm. He took a case over there that will last about a month.” She bit her lip. “We’ll be fine.”
Frank kissed the inside of her wrist. “I love you.”
“I love you.  Now, let’s get you discharged and to the hotel. I need to let Todd know your status and have another trainer join the team for the rest of the trip.”
Tumblr media
When Frank and Abby arrived back at LAX, a teary Mary and Scott were waiting for them.  Mary ran up to Frank and he scooped her up with his good hand.  She cried into his neck, and he tried to sooth her. “Hey Nugget, its ok, I’m ok.”
Mary pulled back and squished his face between her small hands.  She pushes his head around, inspecting the cut and his eyes. “Frank, you scared me.” She pushes his lips to make him smile. “You’re smiling.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I scared me too.  But Abby took good care of me.”  He flashed a soft smile to Abby before Mary launched herself into Abby.
“Thank you, Abby, for taking care of Frank.”
“Always Nugget. I’ll always take care of my family.”  She put Mary down so Frank could take her hand and she turned to Scott.  “How bad?”
“She cried until you guys called. It was pretty scary.” Scott huffs.  “If he wanted your attention...”
“I did not do it to get her attention,” Frank growled.  “If I wanted to get her attention, I would just need to show her my...”
“Franklin!”
Scott snickered as Frank groaned.  “Franklin, that’s so lame,” Mary says.
Frank looks at Abby, who blows him a kiss. He shakes his head but returns the gesture as they make it out to the car.  Getting home, Frank gets to the couch and leans his head back. “Are you in pain Frankie?”
“A little, Cricket.” He grimaces. “Just feel pressure behind my eyes.”
“Yep, that’s the concussion.” Abby reaches for her bag and takes out a couple of tablets. “Here, let me get you some water.” Scott comes around with a bottle of water and Frank looks at him gratefully. He swallows the medicine and tries to close his eyes. “Baby, if you want to sleep, you should be in your room with the curtains closed. You’ll feel better, promise.”
“Will you lay with me?” he asked pathetically.
“Sure love.”  She helps Frank up and into his room. She gets him down and curled up against him. “Better?” He nodded and closed his eyes. “Rest, my love.  I’ll be right here.”
The next ten days were calm with Frank still recovering from his concussion. On day 12, he became restless. He woke up with his Cricket in his arms, her butt right up against his pelvis. Christ, her ass is perfect, he thinks. He lets his hand wander down, dipping below her panties. She sighs in her sleep, but Frank wants to wake her up. He pulls her leg over his hip to open her up and lets his fingertips dip into her folds. Fucking wet and warm for him, like always. He slowly sinks a finger in.
“Frankie,” she moans softly. “Baby, your head.”
“It is clear as ever Cricket. Can I have you?” She nods and Frank smiles. He adds a finger and pumps at a steady rhythm. She cries out quietly and he palms her clit.  He brings her to the brink and watches as she shatters in his arms.
“Need. More,” she pants.
“Whatever you need Cricket.”  Frank pushes her panties down her legs and then pushes his own boxers down, grasping her knee and pulling it back over his hip.  He let his tip dance around the remnants of her release before slowly pushing in. She purrs at the stretch, and he gives a low chuckle.  “Can you be quiet for me Cricket? Can you be a good girl and be quiet?” He feels her nod against his ear. He pulls back and rocks back into her and he can feel her hum at the sensation.  “Good girl. Such a good fucking girl.”
Abby is lost in the sensation of Frank taking her apart slowly. He isn’t rough or fast, just taking his time, making her feel everything. She whimpers at a particularly deep thrust into her womb but she doesn’t cry out. “That's my good Cricket,” he whispers, making her clench around him. “Didn’t realize you have a thing for praise, my love.”
“Frankie,” she whispered. “Don’t be cruel.”
“Never, my love.” He ran a finger down her skin until he met her clit.  He rubbed slowly, feeling her build around his cock. “Are you almost there? I know you are, can feel it.”
“Yes,” she gasped. He didn’t stop until she shattered, seeing stars as he pumped in one, two, three and released inside of her with a low groan.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.”
“Not possible.”
Tumblr media
“Let’s take a trip.”
Abby looks from her coffee. “What?”
“Let’s go on a trip.  Nug has her trip to DC this week, Scott’s heading back to Boston while she’s gone. I can’t stare at these walls anymore Cricket.”
“You’re on injured reserve Frankie, you can’t just take a trip.”
Frank pouts and gives her puppy eyes.  “Please?”
“Oh so you think that just giving me eyes and a sweet little please is going to change my mind.”  Abby turns back to her computer with a scoff.  She misses Frank coming from behind her and sweeping her curls off of her shoulder.  He presses sweet kisses to her neck and shoulders, watching her lose her head and tilt back, exposing more of her.
“I can stop, my love, and just go back to the couch.”
“N-no.” She closes her eyes as her hand cups the back of his neck.  She can feel his smile against her skin.
“Just a few nights. Please.”
Abby starts to lose control of her gasps. She knows she needs to be quiet but the sensation of his lips on the column of her throat is one of the best she’s ever felt. “Ok,” she whispers as he nips her gently. “Fine, where do you want to go?”
After Mary is dropped off with the school for her trip, Frank heads to the airport to drop Scott off for his flight to Boston.  “Have fun Frank,” he said with a wink.
“You too Scott.” He gave him a hug and walked back to his car.  As he drove away from LAX, a sign blinked at him and an idea hit him. It was time, he thought to himself. He messaged Abby.
Frank: pack for the heat  Abby: Why?  Frank: I want to take you somewhere and it will be hot.   Abby: I hate being hot.   Frank: Humor me  Abby: 😑 Fine.   Frank: Love you. 😘
Abby packed her suitcase, smiling at the message Frank sent when another popped up
Mike: How’s the road trip?  Abby: Fine.  Mike: I miss you  Abby: You too  Mike: I’ll be home in a week.   Abby: Ok, I’ll be home
“Fuck,” she muttered.  She hated that she hadn’t had the nerve to just break it off yet. She was just scared of Mike’s reaction. Abby wasn’t normally a confrontational person.  The last time she was hostile, well, she lost Frank. The memory made her sad. When she heard the door open, she shook it off and closed her case.
“Hey Cricket. All set?” Frank’s excitement was in the air.
“Yeah baby, I’m all set.” Abby smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck.  “Gonna tell me where we are going?”
He kissed her nose. “Nope. Let’s go.” He grabbed her bag and his and headed to his Camero.
“I can’t believe you still have this car.”
“I can’t believe you would think that I got rid of it.” Frank started the car and headed out. “This is my prize for getting drafted.”
“And here I thought that was me,” she replied without a thought. Frank smile dropped a little. He swallowed, wondering if this road trip idea was smart. He stayed silent, thinking about all the details and hoped that she would listen.
A few hours later, Abby’s face was in disbelief.  Frank had taken them to Las Vegas.  She didn’t know what to say. Why would he bring them to the very place that had broken them?  Having never been to the city herself, she was awestruck at the lights and sounds.  Frank pulled into a fancy one, the Bellagio and had the valet take their car and bags.  He held her hand as they walked into the lobby.  Abby gasped as she took in the glass flower ceiling. “Wow.”
“It is beautiful,” Frank commented. “When the team had come out here and we were walking around, I remember thinking that you would have loved this.”
“Is this... is there where...”
“No Cricket. I will never go back to that particular hotel ever again.” Frank checked them in and a hotel concierge walked them to their room.  “This is one of our high roller suites, sir.  If you need anything just call the desk and someone will be right up.”
“Thank you.” Frank tipped the man as Abby took in the room.  It faced out to the strip and she could see the other hotels. Suddenly, what sounded like a cannon blasted water up in the air and the fountain began to dance.
“The fountain,” she squealed as Frank chuckled. She could faintly hear the remnants of a Frank Sinatra in the air as the towers of water began to dance.  When it ended, Abby clapped. “That was amazing.”
“It says here that it happens every half hour to a new song until midnight so we can watch it again if you like Cricket.”  Frank loved watching her as she enjoyed the show.  It was something he remembered from that awful October, wishing he could have shared it with her then. “C’mon baby, let me feed you and we can take a walk.”
After a delicious meal, Frank and Abby walked hand in hand on the crowded streets. They pointed at the different signs, different characters that were walking the strip, laughing, and enjoying being just Frank and Abby.  As they approached one hotel, Frank’s palms began to sweat. “Frankie?”
“Can I tell you a story? It doesn’t have a happy ending but maybe we can rewrite it.” Frank looked to his feet.
“You can talk to me about anything, love.” Abby cupped his cheek. “Take your time.”
Frank swallowed.  “About five years ago, I won the big game for my team, and we came here to celebrate. I really didn’t want to because I had my amazing girlfriend and my darling little niece at home, but I didn’t want to come off as a bad team player.  My best friend came with me, and we lived it up.  Our captain had gotten us a couple of tables at a club, and we had fun.” Frank sighed and pointed to the club in front of the MGM. “See that sign? Its for the club we went to.  This is the hotel we were staying at.  Anyways, we partied and went back to the suite where some of us had been staying at.”
“Alone?” She asked, quietly.
“Me, yes.  Some women approached me that night, but I refused.  I wasn’t drinking as much as the rest of the guys from what I can remember. Anyways, some of the guys had brought girls back with us and the hotel had set up a bar for us to drink from.  There was a pool off the balcony of the room and the girls were getting in with just their underwear.  I was uncomfortable.  I said that to Mike. The last thing I remember clearly was him handing me a glass of scotch.  He said, ‘Adler, you earned this.’ You’re a good man to Abby and a wonderful father to Mary.  Just relax and enjoy.’”
“Mike handed you that drink?”
“That’s the last one I remember.  When I woke up, I was in a room, not mine. My head was splitting, and I was dehydrated.  I made it to the bathroom and when I looked back, I saw the blonde. I yelled at her, asking her what the fuck she was doing in my room. She panicked and said she didn’t remember coming in there with me.  Mike rushed in and told her to get out while checking over with me.  I asked him what I had done, and he said, I swear, he said that I got drunk, and I couldn’t make it to my room so he put me in his.”
Abby closed her eyes. “Why would Mike lie?  He had no reason to.”
“Abby, I love how you are so trusting but Mike has had it bad for you since high school. But he knew I liked you and was working up the nerve to tell you for years. But back to the story. I called Steve and asked what I should do.  He was here as well with another client.  He asked me to stop the girl and ask her for the truth.  I did manage to stop her, ask her and promise not to go to the press.  I would pay anything for it not to go to press.  I needed to tell you first.  Steve showed up and got an NDA in place. He talked to her and she confirmed, nothing happened.”
“But then the pictures came out.”
“Then the pictures came out.  I was so angry that someone, who knows who, they violated my privacy, my trust.  I was desperately trying to get to you first but by the time I landed, it was too late. You didn’t let me explain and I lost you.”
“Oh Frankie,” she cried as she pressed herself into his chest.
“I’m so sorry Cricket. I should have called, I should have done something else to stop this from happening. I lost five years with you when a simple phone call would have solved everything.  I am so sorry.”
“I’m sorry too Frankie, I should have just taken a moment to listen to you. When I got those texts of those photos...”
Frank pulled back. “What texts?”
“I got an anonymous text with the photos and an audio of you just says, “I can’t tell Abby,” I thought, well I thought it was more common.”
“You don’t know who sent it.” She shook her head. “Fuck, I don’t, I don’t even know what to say.  I was always going to tell you but I didn’t want to do it by phone.” He pulled her back into his arms and held her tight. “I love you Cricket.  I never stopped.” He kissed the top of her head as they held each other.
Abby sighed after a while.  “Take me to bed?”
Frank didn’t answer, just turned away from the hotel that ruined his life and started back to the fountain.  As they walked, Abby spotted something and stopped.  “Cricket?”
She pointed at the building. “We could make better memories.”
Frank stared at the building and back at his girl.

Frank hadn’t been this nervous to head home since Vegas.  Abby, his beloved Cricket, had been in the hospital.  And while she was fine, at least, that’s what Marco had told him initially, he could help the fear that seeped into his bones. Abby had been distracted, unfocused when he called.  He asked repeatedly if something had gone wrong with Mary, the adoption, Mike, anything.  And every time she replied the same. “Baby, everything is fine.”  Things were certainly not fine, and he was going to get to the bottom of it.
He had been in the middle of his ten-day road trip when he got the call. And now, five days later, he was on the warpath.  He made it home just as the sun was setting, light flooding the living room.  He dropped his bag by the door and made his way inside.  He was fuming, raging. His Cricket had been hurt and there was nothing he could do.  He stomped into the den and stopped.
His Abby was sitting, turned away from him but the sunlight made it seem like she glowed. She was reading, a blanket around her presumably naked legs. She was in one of his button downs, hair piled on top of her head with just a few tendrils falling around her face.  She was so heartbreakingly beautiful, and all of the tension and anger went away.  She was perfect. Something startled her concentration, and she looked up and turned right towards him.  She broke out into a dazzling smile. “Hi Frankie.”
He took the last few steps towards her and kneeled in front of her, pulling her into his arms. He buried his face into her neck and breathed deep. “Hi Cricket.”
Abby ran her hands down his arms to sooth him.  “I’m ok, love. I’m perfectly ok.”
Frank pulled back to check over her. “I was so worried Cricket.”
“I know.”
“When Marco called and said you collapsed, I just…” he took a deep breath, “I thought I was losing you all over again.”
“Oh, baby, I’m sorry.” She held onto him tighter. “I’m ok, I promise. I’m better than ok.” She kissed him softly.
Frank wiped his eyes. “If you are sick, baby, you have to call me and let me come home. I’m supposed to take care of you. In sickness and in health. I promised your dad I would take care of you.”
“Frankie, you left me with my brother and your best friend. I am being taken care of. And it's my responsibility to take care of myself as well and I didn’t.  That’s on me.” Abby cradled his face. “There are gonna be times when I’m sick and there is nothing you can do but ride it out.  But I promise, if something is seriously wrong, I will let you come home, ok?”
Frank nodded and then hugged her tightly. After a few moments, he pulled away. “Where is Mary?”
“Scott and his new man, Steve, took her with Marco for burgers. I figured you were gonna be in a snit when you came home.”
“I am not in a snit, Abigail.”
“You are too, Franklin.”
Frank pouted slightly.  “Fine, I was in a mood.”
“A snit.”
“For the love of…” he looked at his wife’s face. Her beautiful face read him like a book.  “Fine. I was in a snit. Happy?”
“Thrilled. Now I want to show you something.” He stood up, lifting her in his arms at the same time. “I was thinking of decorating another of the rooms upstairs.”
“Ok, then let's head upstairs.” He carried her up, Abby giggling all the way.
“It’s the room next to ours,” she directed. “I was thinking of adding a doorway.”
“A doorway?” Frank’s eyebrows furrowed. “What to make a bigger closet or something.”
“Something,” she replied with a shrug.  He made it to the door, and she slid down to stand. “I’m just thinking we need access, so we don’t wake up Mary or Scott.”
“Babe, I love you, but I don’t think we wake them up now.  I mean, what could possibly…” he opened the door and stopped when he peered inside. “What the… Abby?”
Inside was a plain room with a bassinet in the center with pink and blue balloons.  Frank stepped inside and looked in, finding pregnancy test and a onesie with the words “Can’t wait to meet you, Daddy!”
“Surprise,” Abby said softly.
“Abby,” Frank swallowed. “You’re… we’re…”
“The reason for the dehydration is because I’m pregnant. We’re gonna have a baby.”  Abby’s eyes were shiny with unshed tears.  She had been so nervous to tell Frank, afraid of his reaction of them taking this next step so soon.
“You’re pregnant.” Frank took his wife’s face in his hands. “You’re having my baby?” She nodded. “Fuck, you’re having my baby!” He picked her up and swung her around, laughing and kissing her. He set her down on her feet. “Umm, how much, like, time, wait!”
Abby giggled. “I’m about six weeks or so. I have a scan tomorrow to be sure.”
His hand dropped to her stomach.  “My baby is in there.”
“Yes, our baby is in there.”
Frank hoisted her back into his arms, guiding her legs around her waist. “I love you so much.” He kissed her softly but with so much passion. “Let’s celebrate Cricket.”
“Take me to bed Frankie. I’ve missed you.”
“I missed you too. My beautiful baby momma.” He walked them into their bedroom.  He gently laid Abby on their bed and hovered over her, careful not to let his weight crush her. He kissed her softly, on her lips, then her forehead before moving down by her ear. “you are the most beautiful, amazing woman I know. And I can’t believe you will give me the greatest gift possible.” He felt her trembling with desire as he moved down.  He lifted his shirt away from her torso and kissed every inch of skin. He unclasped her bra and dragged the straps down.
Her breast hadn’t changed but when he went to suck on one, Abby hissed. “Sensitive.” Frank moved back to just kissing the flesh.  He moved south but when he got to her navel, he realized where he was.  He looked up at Abby and smiled.  He kissed the middle of her belly.
“Hi baby. I’m your dad. I can’t wait to meet you too.”
The tender moment brought Abby to tears. “Cricket?”
“I’m sorry, it's just so real now.”  Frank moved back up to hold his girl. He started over on his kisses until he got to her shorts and pulled them and her panties off.  Frank kissed her belly once more before kissing the apex of her thighs, gaining a soft moan from his girl.  He took his time, tasting, sucking, licking until Abby was a withering mess. “Please Frankie.”
“What do you want Cricket?”
“Want you. Need you,” she whispered.
“You have me, love.” He runs his nose over hers. “Never letting go.”
Tumblr media
With the news of the baby, Abby and Frank decided not to wait on the adoption.  Andy flew in to file the paperwork and stayed to catch a game.  He entered the suite that Frank had reserved.  “He didn’t have to do all of this,” gesturing to the catering and the snacks inside of the suite.  It had a glass window that opened to two rows of seats outside.
Abby smiled. “It's mostly for Nugget. First time we brought her back to a game, she freaked. Wouldn’t go anywhere without me holding her hand. This is easier. We have a dedicated security guard, and they bring the treats to her.”
“Poor Nugget.” Andy shook his head. “That fucker messed with her head. I wish we had a lead on him.”
“Has Diskant contacted you?” Abby’s eyes had worry and apprehension in them.
“No, but he is still waiting to hear when you are going back east.  Is that really the smartest idea?”
“I have to, Andy. I need to get this over with so I can start moving my family forward.”
“If you insist on it, then please allow me to go with you.”
“Andy, I don’t...”
“Look, you will be talking to the person who attacked you. You need to have counsel present to at least make sure nothing incriminating is said.”
“Antonio said he would come with me.”
“That’s fine but really Abby, be smart about this. I know you want to help her because she is your friend but there are criminal charges pending and those have to be the priority to protect your family.”
Abby sat back quietly, contemplating his words when the batter from the Padres sent a fly ball up.  She watched her man spot it and make the easy grab.  She clapped with the other fans.
“He’s looking good this year.”
“They’re just two out of the wildcard.”
“Think they got it?”
Abby looked back at the field.  “I know they got it.”
Tumblr media
After the game, the group headed out to dinner to celebrate. As they were ordering, Andy stepped away to take a call.
“Hey Dad,” Mary called out, chewing on a breadstick.
“Eat then speak Nugget,” Frank chastised.
She swallowed, “do you know if you’ll be able to take me for the first day of school?”
Frank looked confused.  “Why wouldn’t I?”
She shrugged.  “We’ve been busy.”
“You know I don’t miss things on purpose Mary. But I already checked, and I’ll be home.”
“Good, because no one will believe me that you’re my dad.”  Mary shoved more breadstick in her mouth as Frank realized what she was calling him. Dad. He reveled in that feeling for a moment before he spotting Andy coming in, a solemn look on his face.
“Andy? Are you ok?”
“Can I talk to you and Abby?”
“Sure. Cricket, come here a sec?” Frank waited until Abby was next to him and took her hand.  They walked away from the table. Scott gave Frank a knowing look and kept Mary distracted. “What's going on?”
“I just got off the phone with San Francisco PD and Detective Diskant. Mike has been arrested in San Francisco. He was caught with a prostitute and being charged with solicitation and possession.”
“Holy shit!” Frank said.  “Wait, you said Diskant was on the call?”
“Yeah, apparently this all happened a few days ago and San Francisco and Boston have been talking.  They just confirmed the transfer to Boston so he can be arraigned on the kidnapping charges.”
“That’s a good thing, right?”  Abby squeezed Frank’s hand a little harder. She studied Andy. “What’s wrong?
Andy swipes hand over his mouth grimacing. “They submitted DNA to the system.”
“Ok,” Frank said slowly.
“Frank, we had submitted Mary’s DNA when she was taken. Remember, they took hair, for the worst case scenario. Thank God they never had to use it but she’s still in the system.”
“Wait, if her DNA is in the system and he is submitting DNA... oh God.” Abby clasps a hand over her mouth.  "Will he get the results?  Will we?”
“Yes, and I don’t know what that will do to the adoption.”
Tumblr media
Abby took her seat next to Andy. “You ok Abby?”
"Flying to face my attacker. I’m great,” she replied.
Andy took her hand.  “I’ll be there every step of the way.”
Nausea took over midway through the flight and Abby raced into the bathroom. When she emerged, Andy handed her a bottle of water. “You ok?”
“I’m fine. Just a little air sick.”  She put her hand unconsciously over her stomach.
Andy smiled. “Right. Air sick.” He looked back at his phone. “So how far along are you?”
Abby choked on her water. “Excuse me?”
“When Laurie was pregnant with Jacob, she was “air sick” for a couple of months until her second trimester.” He smiled at Abby. “Congratulations.”
Abby smiled.  “Thank you. We’re about eight weeks along. We just had the confirmation appointment.”
“How’s Frank?”
“He’s so happy Andy. Really excited.  Had to bride him to keep his mouth such and not tell anyone.  We were waiting for week 13 to tell everyone.”
“Sorry to spoil your surprise. But I’ve flown with you before and you’ve never been sick.”
“Fuck me,” Abby said leaning her head back and closing her eyes. “This kid will be the death of me if I have to keep throwing up. Morning sickness my ass. More like all day sickness.”
Andy chuckled as he returned to his phone.
Once they landed, Abby headed straight into the arms of her father. “Hi Papi.”
“Hi mija. You look tired.”
“I am. Frank hasn’t been able to relax since we got the news about Mike.”
Her father swore. “Puta madre. He should be rotting right now for touching my granddaughter.” William shook his head. “He was a bad egg in school and he’s worse now.”
“I know Papa. I’m sorry.”
“I don’t blame you Abigail. He had everyone fooled.” William went quiet for a moment.  “How is my son-in-law and my granddaughter?”
“They’re good. Mary starts school next week. Fifth grade.” She sighed. “They moved her up a grade.”
“Wow, my little genius. Think the Dodgers have a chance at the playoffs?”
“I think so. But you know Frank. Ever the pessimist.” She rolled her eyes at the thought.
William chuckled and pulled up to her childhood. Her mother was there to greet her with a hug and dinner. She called Frank and let him know everything was ok, a touch of sickness on the plane. “I’ll be home before you know it.”
“I know Cricket but when I’m home you’re supposed to be here.” Frank pouted and gave her big puppy eyes.
“Baby, c’mon,” Abby whined. "It’s two nights."
“And you’re pregnant Abigail. I’m supposed to take care of you.”
“And you are baby. I love you.”
She listened to him sigh. “I love you.  Please be careful Cricket. It's not just you anymore.”
“I know. I’ll talk to you in the morning.”
Morning came and with it found Antonio driving his little sister towards Boston Metro.  “Are you nervous princessa?”
“Kind of. I just don’t know what to say to her.  She was my best friend for so long.”
“Just remember that she is sick and needs help.  But making excuses her does not help her.”
“You sound like Andy.”
“Smart man.”
Andy met them at the front door and signed them in. “Tony, you have to remain silent because anything you say could potentially be used against your sister.”  Antonio nodded. “Ready Abby?”
She nodded. She followed Andy into an observation room where Diane was seated.  She perked up as soon as she saw Abby.
“Hello Diane.”
Tumblr media
Frank was seated, nervous and angry. He felt uncomfortable being away from his girls.  But Scott and Marco had Mary and Andy and Antonio had Abby.  He took a breath before he noticed the figure that was placed and seated in front of him.  Thick glass sat between them, probably the only thing saving him from the beating that Frank was ready to deliver.  Frank picked up the phone and waited for the other end to be picked up.
“Hello Mike.”

aughable.
Sinister
Dangerous
Insane
All of these words float through Frank’s mind as he stares at his former best friend. Mike sat across from him, plexiglass separating them. He could barely recognize him. After talking with Andy, who was not happy about this visit, Mike was in the process of being disciplined by the California and Massachusetts BARs. The law firm he was working at had already dismissed him. Natasha Romanoff had personally contacted Abby and himself with apologies. Probably trying to avoid a lawsuit for malpractice. But Frank wasn’t worried about any of that.  His sleepless nights made him come to one conclusion: let Mike Weiss know he was never going to hurt his family again.  Mike laughed when he saw Frank sitting there. When Frank picked up the phone, so did he.
“Hi Mike.”
“Hello, homewrecker.”
Frank had to swallow the anger. He needed answers.  Answers that only Mike could provide. But he didn’t know what to say.
“What? Got nothing to say?” Mike taunted him. “I’m locked up and you are with my cheating good for nothing whore of an ex-fiancé.”
Frank narrowed his eyes. “Don’t call her that.”
Mike scoffed. “I’ll call her whatever the fuck I want. Abby left me for you. I know you two were sleeping together before she broke it off with me. I’m just calling a spade, a spade.”
“Look, it wasn’t intentional, ok?”
“Not intentional. Bullshit. You were upset that I got the girl.” Mike smirked. “I had you beat.”
“And yet, she still came back to me.” The smile dropped on Mike’s face as Frank’s grin grew. “She has always been mine. We just found our way back to each other. And now we have a family with my Mary.”
The mention of Mary draws a snarl of from Mike.  “What the fuck do you want?”
“I just have one question.”
“Which is?”
“Why? Why did you let Diane into your home and attack Abby? Why did you kidnap my daughter?”
Tumblr media
Abby sat on the cold metal chair across from Diane. She was just like how she remembered her. Before the attack, before she abandoned Mary. Before she was with Mike.  Her hair was longer, the long blonde stands pulled away from her face. Abby assumed her face would be hallow from being on the run but no, her cheeks were full.  The only thing that made her think this was a different Diane from her childhood was her eyes.  Her eyes were sad, full of remorse, sorrow, guilt.  She noted that Diane was cuffed to the table, and she was able to relax her shoulders a bit.
“Hi Diane,” she greeted softly.
“Abby. I’m surprised to see you here.”
“Yeah, me too.” Abby looked down.  “How- How are you?”
Diane cocked her head with curiosity at her question. “I’m ok. They put me on meds and my head is clear.”  Diane chewed her bottom lip. “How’s Frank?”
“He’s good. A little sad.”
“Sad?”
“Because he lost his sister.”  Abby looked at her sadly. “You have no idea the damage you have done to him. To Mary. To me.”  She gave a hard look. “Why Diane? Why him?”
“You wouldn’t understand.”  Diane leaned back.
“Try me. Because he manipulated me to be with him and I lost five years with the love of my life.”
Diane looked away.
Tumblr media
Rage took over Mike’s face.  “Mary is MINE! I’ll prove it, you motherfucker.”
“You can’t have her,” Frank said calmly. “She is mine and I won’t give up fighting for her.  I’m her father. And you are nothing but her sperm donor.  You raped my sister and left her when she was pregnant. You told my baby sister to abort her baby.  You don’t have any right to call yourself Mary’s father.”
“Well obviously she didn’t,” Mike sneered. “I will do everything I can to take away Mary from you. Your life will be hell, I promise you that."
“You’ll do shit! Why did you attack my wife?”
“I owe you nothing Adler.” Mike leaned back. “I’ll take that one to the grave.”
Frank stood up. “Fine, don’t tell me. Abby is in Boston, seeing Diane.  We’ll get the answers we are looking for. See you at trial.”  He hung up and could see Mike screaming at him through the glass.  Guards came over to restrain him.
Frank was disappointed.  Not so much as not getting the answers he wanted but because his friend was now a drugged out mess, not even a piece of the good man he once knew remained.  Frank had his driver take him back to the airport. He needed to hug his daughter.
Tumblr media
“I always had a crush on Mike. He was my brother’s best friend. Older guy. Forbidden.” Diane gave a sad smile. “I didn’t think I had a chance in hell. But one day he noticed me. You and my brother were so wrapped up in each other and I didn’t notice how obsessed Mike was with you.”
“Did he... did he take advantage?”
“No,” she shook her head. “He talked and touched my face so sweet.  He spent days with me when you guys started dating. He told me I was beautiful and he... he could see a future with me.”  A single tear fell from her eye. “I believed him.”
Abby took in a shuddering breath. “Why were you in my house?”
“Mike came back into my life. He found me in Seattle and said that he found a way for us to be together. That he knew who made me like this. He gave me a shot and when I woke up, I was in a hotel.”
“You don’t remember?” Abby frowned. “Anything?”
Diane shook her head.  “No. I know what happened because the police told me.”
Abby sat back. She looked at Antonio, who had a look of sadness. “I’m sorry that happened to you Diane.  Thank you for talking with me.”  She stood up with Andy and Antonio following her lead. “I’ll see you later.”
Diane sobbed and Andy took a hold of Abby to stop her from comforting Diane.  He led her out and once outside, Abby collapsed into her brother’s arms, crying for the pain her friend had endured.
Tumblr media
Abby was quiet the entire flight home.  Andy kept glancing at her as she sat with her eyes closed.  He sent a message to Frank
A: It was bad  F: Fuck, is she ok?  A: I think so. The story Diane told was heartbreaking  F: Has Cricket said anything?  A: No.  F: OK, I’ll see you when you land
At the airport, Abby and Andy made their way out, with Andy guiding her around.  She was staring at the ground when she heard, “hey Cricket.” She looked up to see Frank standing at the door, a single pink rose in his hand.  She dropped the bag and ran into his arms, wrapping her legs around him. The sobs that she had contained from Boston to LA came spilling out. “Baby, its ok, its all gonna be ok.” He kissed her head.
Andy walked over with Abby’s dropped bag. “Hey Frank.”
“Thank you, Andy, for flying back with her.”
“Not a problem, had some stuff to finish in our LA office.” He shrugged. “Is it still ok to stay with you?”
“Course man. Let’s get you guys home.” He set Abby down, grabbed her bag and walked her and Andy to the car. Arriving home, Abby raced inside, still nothing spoken. Frank and Andy exchanged a look before heading inside. It was early, the house still calm. Abby stood in the doorway of her daughter’s bedroom. She watched for a moment, Mary sleeping in her bed, Dodger at her feet. A single tear slides down her face.  The tragic story of her conception, how her parents didn’t love her enough, that Frank and Abby had to pick up the pieces and love a girl that was not their own. But Abby did love, she loved that little girl with everything she had. As she stared, her only thought was ‘Her baby girl was safe.’  Carefully, she crawled into the bed with her.  Mary turned into Abby and sighed happily, her unconscious state recognizing that Abby was cuddling with her.
When Frank looked in, his heart clenched at the sight of mother and children in bed together. Abby had quickly fallen asleep with her arms wrapped around Mary.  Not one to miss out on a snuggle, Frank kicked off his shoes and climbed in as well, wrapped his arms around his family and went back to sleep.
Tumblr media
Mike was extradited to Massachusetts the following week and was charged with kidnapping and child endangerment. He pled not guilty and decided to represent himself.  He hadn’t been disbarred yet. “There is nothing else we can do right now,” Andy explained. “The protection order is already in place. Now we just have to wait.”
Frank returned to the team, working on winning the division. Their final challenge was a familiar foe: the San Francisco Giants. Facing Mike’s new best friend, Bobby, would be difficult but as long as Frank kept his mouth shut, it would be fine.  A three game series in September was the epitome of baseball.  A time for summer to end and fall to take over.
The first two games were uneventful as Bobby was out with a bruised knee.  But he was cleared to play for the Sunday finale.  The Dodgers needed the win in order to avoid a playoff and win the division.  It was a beautiful September Sunday, perfect weather for a game.  Abby, Scott, Steve and Mary were in the family box, watching their favorite player take the field.  San Francisco was up at bat first.
Frank concentrated on the batter.  Of course, it was Fuller. Johnny ended up walking him and he jogged over to first base. Frank scowled but kept his mouth shut.
“Sup Adler.” Fuller smiled. “Long time no talk.”  Frank said nothing.  “What? You’re not going to talk to me. That’s mature.”
“I’m not talking to you because I don’t want to get kicked out of this game or end up in jail.” Frank turned away from Fuller and concentrated on the game.  The next batter popped a fly ball, and the second baseman was able to turn it into a double play.  Fuller headed back into the dugout, a smirk on his face.
Frank rolled his eyes and went back to the game.  A few innings later Bobby was back on first base after hitting a ground ball to left field. “You still mad that Abby left you?”
“Nope.”
Fuller watched him carefully.  “You know it wasn’t personal for me Frankie Boy. Mike just said the right things at the right time.”
“Is that right?”
“Yeah.”
“Cool.  Then maybe you can explained why he let my drugged out sister in his home with Abby and let her beat the crap outta her? Or the fact that he kidnapped my daughter.”  Frank got right into Bobby’s face, causing the first base coach to try to intervene.  “Can you explain how you let that psycho near my family, and yet you feel nothing?!” He shoved Bobby to the ground.  “Fuck you and fuck him!  I will have my day in court where I take that son of a bitch down.  And I’ll take you down with him if you speak to me or go near me and family again.” Frank shook off Johnny who was holding in back.
“You’re gone Adler,” the umpire said.
Frank walked without causing another scene.  In the locker room, he threw his hat and glove in rage.  “FUCK!”  He grasped the table to try and calm himself.
“Frankie?”
Frank whipped around to see Abby in the doorway.  “Cricket, I...”
“Are you ok?” She cut him off.
He shook his head. “No. Fuller, he... fuck, he got to me Cricket.  How could he do it?  How could he help that fucker hurt you and Mary. He was my best friend on the team and he...” Frank finally broke down and cried into Abby’s shoulder. He had been so strong for so long. Abby stroked his back and let him come to terms with the truth.
“Baby, you have been our rock this year. Let it out, ok?”
“I love you, Cricket, so much.”
“I love you too, Frankie.”
Tumblr media
As the family made it home, Frank’s cell rang. “It’s Andy.”  Scott ushered Mary to her room as Abby and Frank answered the call.  “Hey Andy.”
“Hi Frank.  Is Abby with you?”
“I’m here.”
“Ok good.”  he sighed. “Mike was given bail and he made it. He’ll be released by tomorrow.”
“Fuck,” Frank mumbled.
“That’s not the worst of it. He’s filed a motion to block the adoption.”
“What?” Abby whispered. “Why?”
“Just like we thought. On the grounds that he is Mary’s natural father and has not given up his rights. The motion states that the block is to allow time for him to sue for custody. There is a court date in a week from Monday on the motion.”
“We'll fight,” Frank said.  “We’ll find a way show the courts that he is an unfit father and to make him go away. I refuse to let that son of a bitch tear apart this family.”
“Frankie...” Abby started
“No Abigail. I’m not gonna stop until we have that paperwork that says to the world that Mary is ours, just like she’s been since she was born.”

Frank paces in the hallway as the doctors do a check up on Abby.
Diane.
The name has haunted him since the last time he saw her. Eight years.  It had been eight years since he had seen his little sister. This is not how he wanted this to go.
“Mr. Adler?”
Frank whipped around and looked at Cricket’s doctor.  “Is she ok?”
“She’s doing well.  Her injuries are healing but we would like to keep her for a few more days to make sure there is no additional swelling to the brain and that there is no internal bleeding from the blows to the torso.  Her scans are clear, so this is just a precaution.”
“Of course.” Frank swallowed.  “She wants to bring our niece in. Would that be ok?”
“As long as she takes it easy, I see no problem.  But she needs to rest Mr. Adler.”
“She will.  I’ll make sure after she speaks to the detectives. Thank you.” Frank offered a weak smile.
“Have faith, Mr. Adler. She is past the worst.” The doctor patted his shoulder and walked away.  Frank took a breath before entering Abby’s room.
She was sitting up better now and smiled when she saw Frank.  “Hi baby.”
“Hi Cricket.”  He leaned and kissed her forehead. “How are you feeling?”
“Sore and tired. Confused,” she frowned. “I don’t remember getting here.”
“One of the neighbors heard you screaming and called it in. I didn’t find out until the morning because they couldn’t get a hold of management.” Frank smoothed her hair. “I should have gone with you. I knew something might happened. I should have protected you.” His face broke a little. Abby reached up to cup his face.
“This is not your fault, Frankie. Please don’t blame yourself.”  Abby sighed and massaged her temple.
“Are you hurting?”
“A little,” she admitted.
“C’mon, lay back.”  He helped her back to lay down. He took a seat next to her, took her hand and kissed her knuckles. “Cricket, I’m so sorry.”
“This is not your fault Frankie.  Please don’t apologize.” Abby sighed. “I know you are waiting to talk so I don’t have to repeat myself but what are you thinking?”
“Diane. Mike. I’m just... confused, angry, scared. I’m worried about you, Mary, our family, just everything Cricket.” Frank laid his head on her lap, and she ran her fingers through his hair. “What if I lost you? “
“You didn’t baby.  I’m right here.” Abby kept his that way for a few moments before the door opened and a knock came through. “Dr. Hernandez?”
“Yes?”
“Hello, I’m Detective Stabler and my partner Detective Benson. We have taken over your case and have some questions for you.  May we?”
“Of course.  This is my husband, Frank Adler”. Frank shook the detectives hands before sitting down again and taking Abby’s hand.
“It's nice to meet you. I wish it was under better circumstances,” Detective Stabler said.  “Dr. Hernandez...”
“Abby, please.  Call me Abby.”
“Of course, Abby. Can you tell me what happened when you went home?”
“Well, I went from the stadium to my home that I was sharing with my ex, Michael Weiss. Umm,” she looked at Frank. He nodded and she took a breath. “I was leaving him because Frank and I had reunited and had gotten married a couple of weeks ago. I thought he was still back east so I felt safe to collect my things so I could take them to Frank’s.”
“He was in the home?”
“Yeah, I don’t know how.  We own a ring camera, and it should have gone off when someone approached the door.  But my phone never alerted me. I went in and was looking at the mail when he surprised me.” Frank’s grip tightened on Abby’s hand.
“Hello Beautiful.”
Abby jumped at his voice.  “Mike! You’re back early.”
“I am. Funny how you weren’t home.”
“Yeah, I was at the stadium getting paperwork done from the road trip.  How was work?”  Abby tried to remain calm.
“Informative.  Care to explain these?” He threw down photos in front of her.
Abby picked them up and saw photos from Vegas, from the benefit and from LAX.  “Mike,” she whispered.
“You’re mine, Abigal, he growled. MINE!”  He backed her up into a corner, crowding her.  “And if I can’t have you, then no one will.”
“When he said that, I picked up the metal baseball bat we keep by the front door.  I told him to stay away from me.  I think he remembered all the batting lessons Frank had taught us over the years and stepped back.”
“Did he say anything else?”
“Only that I was going to regret this, and it wasn’t over. But he left, through the garage door and I leaned against the wall.  I was about to call Frank when I was hit from behind. I fell but turned over.” Her voice shook. “I saw who hit me and before I could say anything else, she kicked me in the ribs. I couldn’t breathe and I just tried to protect myself as best I could.”
A tear ran down her cheek, but Abby didn’t stop.  “She kept yelling at me that it was my fault that she lost her family, that I ruined everything. That Frank would never forgive her, so it was better that I just be removed so he knew the same pain as she did.”  Abby swallowed.  “She said it would have been better if Mike had stayed with them instead of being obsessed with me just like her brother. That’s why she gave away Mary. To hurt Mike but it didn’t.”
“Diane,” Frank breathed, “she did this?”
Abby nodded.  “She said that she didn’t want Mary, but she didn’t want us to have her either.” Abby leaned into Frank.  He climbed into the bed as gently as he could to hold her.
“Is this Diane, your sister Mr. Adler?” Detective Benson asked.
“Frank and yes. She abandoned Mary with us eight years ago and we are her legal guardians. When Abby and I separated, I didn’t change the paperwork. I couldn’t.” He kissed Abby’s head as she continued to cry softly. “Diane was or is a drug addict. She wasn’t given visitation rights because of it. But this information about Mike staying with her is new. I never knew that they were in a relationship or had one, I guess.”
“Do you think he knows?” Stabler asked.
“I don’t know but I would assume yes,” Abby sniffled. “Mike is a manipulative man. He had, umm... fuck I’m sorry Frankie. He had hit me a couple of times before, grabbed me and left marks.” Abby buried her head into Frank’s chest.
“Abby, I’m sorry but is there anything else you can tell us? What Diane look like or what was she wearing?”
“Her hair is still blonde, longer, like to her shoulders.  She is still really skinny, but she was wearing a blue hoodie and jeans.  The doctors think she was wearing steel toe shoes because of my injuries.”
“We have a copy of your medical records,” Benson said. “I’m really sorry that this is happening.  We are looking for Mr. Weiss and Miss Adler. We’ll be in touch.”  The detectives left and Frank and Abby stayed in each other’s arms for a while.
“Cricket, why didn’t you tell me?”
Abby sighed. “Tell me what you would have done if I had told you?”
“I would have killed him,” he told her with a straight face.
“That’s why. Baby, you have a future hall of fame career and a child to care for.”
“I could really care less about my career, but I’ll give you the Mary thing.” Frank held her a little tighter. “God, Cricket, I don’t understand why Diane did this and how she got into the house. And why Mike was ok with all of this?”
“I’ve been thinking the same questions, Frank.” Abby shook her head. “None of it makes sense.  Except the obsession thing.  I see that now. After what you told me what happened in Las Vegas, I’m almost certain Mike was the one who slipped you the mickey.”
“The mickey? Really Abigail with the street terms.” Frank gave her a look before he smiled.  “I’m so proud.”
“Shut it.”  She sighed and leaned back into him. “What do we do?”
“We’ll talk to management and see what they recommend. I’ll ask Todd, Andy and Steve to meet us here since you won’t be released in time for that meeting.  We’ll have to announce the marriage Cricket.”
Abby wrinkles her nose. “Are the groupies going to cry? Sexy baseball player Frank Adler off the market.” She made a dramatic sigh as Frank rolled his eyes.
“Yes, just like all the single guys on the team will be drooling over my wife now. Hoo-ray.” The sarcasm dripped from Frank. Abby smiled softly. “Seriously Cricket, I couldn’t give a fuck about the jersey chasers. I got the woman of my dreams.”
“Oh Frankie, that’s so sweet.” Abby leaned up and kissed his cheek.  “Now, when do I get to see my girl?”
“Scott is bringing her by in an hour. Doctor said you could shower as long as someone is in the room.” Frank smirked. “I could help you.”
“Frankie, if I thought my ribs could take it, I would take you up on that offer.”
Frank laughed.  “I know baby. C’mon, an easy shower it is.”
An hour later, a knock on the door. Abby grasped Frank hand tightly. “It’ll be ok Cricket.” She nodded before Frank called out. “Come in.”
Scott opened the door slowly and walked in with Mary in Johnny’s arms. “Hi Mary,” Abby said softly.  Mary took a long look at Abby before burying her head in Johnny’s shoulder and began sobbing. Frank stood up and took his little girl in his arms. “It’s ok Nugget.  She’s gonna be ok.”
Mary’s tear stained face looked back at Abby. “Who hurt you?”
“Let’s not talk about that right now Nugget.” Abby’s eyes were holding back the tears. Mary wiggled out of Frank’s arms and climbed into bed with Abby.  She laid on her shoulder and wrapped her little arm around Abby. Abby bent her head and kissed Mary’s head. “I’m gonna be ok, Nugget.”
“You promise?” Mary’s small voice breaks everyone’s hearts.
“I promise. I just need to rest for a couple of weeks, and we’ll get right back at it, ok?” Mary snuggled further into her as Abby turned back to the guys.  “Hi.”
“Hey Doc,” Johnny says with a smile. “Quite a scare you gave us. This one,” thumbing at Frank, “was a hot mess.”
“I was not,” Frank grumbled. “I was worried about my wife.”
“Yeah, let’s come back to that,” Johnny says with a twinkle in his eye. “When did that happen?”
“A couple of weeks ago at a hotel,” Mary offers, before anyone can say anything. “I was Abby’s maid of honor. She was so pretty that day.”
Frank dropped his head as Scott snickered and Abby blushed. “Really? And you didn’t think to invite me?” Johnny feigned his indignation. “I’m supposed to be your best friend, Adler.”
“I’m his best friend, Storm,” Scott said with a shove. “You’re my backup.” Johnny snorted.
“Guys, knock it off,” Frank said. “You’re both my best friends, ok? And Johnny, you were playing that day. It really was a day between when I asked Abby and when we did it.  Frankly,” he rubbed the back of his neck, “I’m surprised no one had spilled before now.”
“Why are you keeping it a secret?” Scott asked. “I thought you of all people, would be shouting it from the rooftops. I mean, the way you were moping over the good doctor and how you never had...”
“We really don’t have to talk about that,” Frank interrupts, looking at his wife with a sheepish grin. “Look, Cricket, I concentrated on raising Nugget and baseball, ok. I was not...”
“Pining like a fool after a girl,” Johnny offered.
Abby giggled a little, then groaned. “Ouch,” she moaned, holding her ribs.
“Baby, take it easy.” Frank went back to his seat next to her. “I can call security and kick them out if you want.” He kissed her hand.
“This is our family, Frankie, and it makes me happy they are here.” She cupped his cheek. “I’m ok.” A knock at the door. “Come in,” she called out.
In came Todd Phelps, Frank’s agent Steve and his lawyer Andy.  “Oh, hi guys,” Frank stood up to shake their hands.
“Dr. Hernandez, it's nice to see you again.”  Andy offers his hand to Abby. “I’m sorry it had to be under these circumstances.”
“Andy, it's nice to see you again.  Steve, Todd, what’s going on?”
Todd cleared his throat. “Well, ownership asked me to come check on you after the police had called the organization for your emergency contact.  And, well, with the conversation we had before you left that day, I wanted to get a head of any story that may come out.”
“Frank called me for the same reason,” Steve offered.  “Wanna tell us what’s the situation?”
“Mary, why don’t we find a drink and snack while they talk,” Scott offered.  Mary carefully climbed off the bed, hugged Steve and Andy before looking up at Todd.  “Is Frank in trouble?”
“No, darlin’, not at all.”
“Ok, good, because he promised me that he would make it to the All Star game so I could visit my friends in Boston,” she replied, a matter of factly. “Plus, I want to see Abuelo and Abuela. Hey Scott, can we look online to see if we can get them something?”
Frank looked dizzy at all the words coming from Mary’s mouth as she and Scott walked out of the room.  He looked back at his wife, who shrugged, before returning his attention to the rest of the group. “Is it ok if Johnny stays?”
“Up to you,” Andy replies.  “First things first, Abby, I have filed a restraining order of your behalf against Mike.  The police report should be more than enough but as soon as you can, I need your medical report as well.”
“And what about Diane?”
“Diane?” Steve looked at them confused.  “What about her?”
Frank looked at Abby who nodded. “We are not sure about their connection, but we think Mike and Diane are working together.  Diane was the one who attacked Abby.  She said something that we need to figure out.”
“Like what?” Andy asked, taking notes.
“The possibility that Mary could be his daughter.” Everyone freezes.  “Andy, I need to know what our rights will be if he comes after us for custody.”

“This thing is trying to kill me,” Frank grunts, struggling with his bow tie. “Why do they insist on making this shit black tie?”
“Because of the fancy people Frank,” Mary piped in as she lay on his bed, watching.
“Thanks, Nugget, for your insight.”
“What’s insight?”
“Never mind,” Frank muttered.
“It means your opinion,” Scott said as he walked into the room.  He reached up to tie the tie for Frank. “You have to explain it to her,” he told Frank.  He adjusted and stepped back. “There, perfect.”
“Thanks.” Frank looked in the mirror and turned back to his gang.  “How do I look?”
“Like a penguin,” Scott replied and begin to waddle around, mimicking a penguin, making Mary giggle.
“You’re hilarious,” Frank deadpanned.  “Why am I so nervous?”
“Because you have a date,” Scott said with sympathy.  “Its been five years.”
“Its not a date.”
“Its something. Its spending time with a woman.” Scott pats his shoulder. “And its not Abby.”
Frank arrives at the charity event in the limo, alone.  He makes his way through the red carpet, taking photos and speaking with some reporters. The questions are simple, and Frank is somewhat relaxed. As soon as he finished up, he headed into the event. Looking around he spotted Johnny with his date and his sister.  Susan was in a sleek navy blue gown that was modest and elegant, allowing her golden blonde hair to shine. The other woman was in a black gown that left little to the imagination. Frank smiled and headed over.  “Hey Torch, hey Susie.  Sorry,” he glanced at the woman on Johnny’s arm.  “Frank Adler,” he offered his hand.
A breathy giggle emerges.  “Bethany,” she said.
“Nice to meet you.  Susie,” he offered his arm to Susan, who took it.  As they walked away, he groaned. “Jesus, is that all Storm wants in a woman?”
Susan stifled a laugh.  “Apparently.  She’s a makeup artist.  I use that term loosely.  She works at a makeup store selling make up. And hopefully tit tape since that is all that is holding that dress up.”
Frank snorted a laugh. “Why am I not surprised.” Frank shook his head. “Thanks for doing this, Susie.”
“Its not a problem, Frank. You help me out and I’m returning the favor.”
A two weeks prior... at the coffee shop.    “I could always give you guys a tour at JPL.  I mean if you want,” Susan offered with a smile.   “And that’s my cue for a refill,” Johnny stated, jumping up and heading to the counter.   Frank sighed.  “Look, Susan, I think you are very nice, but I am not looking for anything serious.”   Susan laughed.  “I know, I’m not either.  But I know you need to keep... umm.. Eager women...”  “Jersey Chasers,” he clarified.   “Fine, jersey chasers off of you.  I can help if you let me. Just as friends. Promise.”  She offered her hand.   Frank took it and shook it. “Friends. But why?”  “Haven't had the guts to tell Johnny that I met someone.” She blushed slightly.  “Why? Wouldn’t that be great?”  “Twin brothers are protective. And he’s not the typical guy that Johnny wants to see me with.” She rolled her eyes allowing Frank to chuckle.   “I get the protective thing. I have a sister, obviously, but she is free to live her own life.  Now, if he hurt her, that’s a different story. But fuck what Johnny wants. Does this guy...”  “Reed,” she offered.   “Is Reed a good guy who likes you for you?” She nodded. “Then be happy. And I meant what I said.  Fuck what Johnny thinks.”  They shared a laugh as Johnny returned.   “So how’s it going?”  “Susan agreed to be my, uh, companion I guess is the right word for the benefit.”  “Great!” Johnny smiled and wrapped an arm around his sister. “I guess this is the start of a beautiful friendship.”
As Frank and Susan walked the floor, another couple arrived at the benefit.  Abby and Mike walked hand in hand, greeting the owners of the Dodgers and looked for their table.  Her heart sank as the assignments had them sitting with Frank. As she read, her heart plummeted further. He was seated next to a Bethany Carmichael and Susan Storm.  Knowing Johnny, he didn’t bring his sister as his date.
“That is an interesting assignment,” Mike commented.  He looked at Abby and could see the anguish. “You didn’t asked to be seated with him right?” He grasped her fingers a little tighter.
Two weeks Before, Abby and Mike’s house...  “Abby, beautiful, I’m so sorry.” Mike was on his knees groveling as she walked out of the bathroom in the morning. “Baby...”   “Don’t touch me.” Abby moved into their bedroom.  She was refusing to look in the mirror, afraid of what she would see. Mike followed.  “Baby...”  “No, I can’t do this...”  “Please don’t leave Abby. I am so sorry. It was an accident.” He shed tears and got back on his knees in front of her. “I’m so ashamed of myself. He clutched her around the middle. “Please, I’ll do anything.”   Abby sighed. Her heart was conflicted. She knew he had crossed a line, but it wasn’t one he had before. She didn’t want to give up on him. “One more chance Michael. But I swear...”  “No, baby, thank you, I promise. It will never happen again.”    Abby stayed home that day, letting her face heal. And Mike was loving, so attentive. They never spoke about it again. Frank was never brought up. She kept her promise to avoid the Adlers. It was breaking her heart.
“No,” she shook her head. “I was planning to avoid him as much as possible.” That was a lie. She wanted to see Frank. To see how well he was. Ever since his hug and kiss from the hospital she could not stop thinking of him.  After watching Mary, she saw what she had been missing.  Frank and Mary were not just an uncle and his niece. They had grown to father and daughter.
Mike guided her to their table. “Hello Johnny, Frank,” Mike said with a saccharine tone.
Frank stiffened at his voice. Susan caught the flinch and patted his leg. Abby caught the movement and frowned. But it was Johnny who broke the silence at the table. “Hi, you’re Mr. Weiss, right?” Mike nodded. “John Storm.  This is my date, Bethany and my sister, Susan. Mr. Weiss is with the team’s legal department. And this is Dr. Hernandez, our head team doctor.”
Susan stood and shook hands with the couple. “Susan Storm. It's nice to meet you both.”
“Abigail Hernandez,” Abby said quietly. She assessed Susan and couldn’t find a fault. She was beautiful, elegant, poised. Exactly what she would have wanted for Frank before, when he wasn’t hers. But now, now he wasn’t hers again and it hurt.
Mike was seated next to Bethany and was talking with her, and Abby was seated next to another player and his date.  She didn’t say much at the table, keeping her focus on the centerpiece.  A laugh broke her out of her concentration. Susan and Frank were laughing at something, and Abby’s heart clenched.  “I’m going to the restroom,” she told Mike.
“I’ll join you,” Susan said, standing from the table.  She gave Frank’s shoulder a squeeze and walked toward Abby.
Dammit, she thought.  She just needed a moment away from perfect Susan with her Frank and... the thought startled her. Frank was no longer hers. She made sure of that when she walked away. And yet, the thought of this woman, this flawless, perfect woman, was able to touch him, to be with him, made her angry.
Dr. Hernandez, are you alight? Susan looked at her face with concern.
Abby snapped out of it. She hadn’t schooled her face like she thought. “Sorry, just a lot on my mind. I’m fine Dr. Storm.” She had heard that she had completed her doctorate at MIT in astrophysics.
“Call me Sue. You seem young for a doctor?”
“I graduated three years early from high school. Frankie, I mean Frank and Mike and I went to the same undergraduate.” Abby looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize who she saw. It was her but the sparkle was gone.
“Wow, impressive. Johnny got his diploma but bolted as soon as he was drafted. I headed east for school. Came back when they had an opening at JPL.”
“That’s...” Abby searched for words, “nice.” She offered a hard smile, not wanting to cause a scene. But her blood boiled. “So, you and Frank.”
“Yeah, he’s been so nice. He’ll make someone very happy.” Sue touched up her lipstick.” But you and Mike are cute together. Engaged long?”
Abby tried to maintain her tone. “A couple of months. We’re gonna start looking for a venue soon.”
“Oh.” Sue was stunned. She had assumed that Abby and Mike had just been playing but no, this was real.
Abby walked out and back to the table, Susan trailing.  She could see the tension rising from the table. She went to Mike. “Everything ok?”
“I was just asking how long Frank and Susan had been hooking up.” Mike grinned. “I mean, someone here sent a photo of them together to a tabloid and then more photos from a coffee shop, it looks like, are floating around as well.  Frankie boy got overheated at my question.  I wondered why.” He showed Abby his phone with the article and the photos.  Photos of Frank hugging Susan and then kissing her cheek.
Abby looked at Frank, who was a little pink in the cheeks. She understood; Steve had mentioned it.  There had been no one since Abby and now there was Susan. Her heart broke. He found someone better. “I’m just gonna get a drink.  Excuse me.” Abby headed to the bar but once she was out of sight, she made it to the lobby.  She found a seclude area and sat, numb.
She let him go. She threw him away and yet, it hurt. It hurt so much that he had waited for five years for her to come back and when they met again, well, she is engaged. To his former best friend. A single tear dropped and landed on her hand.
“Cricket?”
Abby turned to see Frank standing at the doorway. “Go away.”
“No, Cricket, you’re crying.”
“Its nothing, just leave me alone.” She turned to move away but Frank stopped her.  He pulled her into his arms to hold her in place.
“Abigail, what’s wrong?”
Abby looked up at Frank. He never called her Abigail. “Are you with Susan?”
“What?”
“Is what Mike saying, true? Are you dating Susan?”
Frank looked at her curiously. “Why do you care, Abby? You left me, remember? You’re with Mike.”
Abby lowered her head. “I know.”
“So, tell me, why do you care?”
She kept her head down and just shook it a little. “I just want to make sure she’s good enough,” she lied.
Frank quirked a smile. “Liar. Little lying Cricket. You could never lie to me sweetheart.” He chuckled and grasped her chin to tilt her head up. “Tell me.”
“Because I need to know,” she whispered.
Frank studied her face, seeing the deep sadness and fear of his possible answer. He sighed. “No, Cricket, I’m not dating Susan. She’s my date tonight to keep the jersey chasers away.”
Abby was stunned. “But she’s perfect.”
Frank gave a half smile. “Maybe for her boyfriend, Reed, but not for me. I know what perfect is and I’ll never find it again.”
Abby stared into his eyes, the blue she was still so in love with. “I miss you, Frankie.”
“I miss you too Cricket.” He watched the tear fall from her eye. “Don’t cry, my love,” he whispered. He wiped it away but cupped her cheek. He watched as she melted into his warmth and closed her eyes. “Open them, Cricket.” They opened and watched as he kept studying her before drifting to her lips and back. She nodded and he smiled before leaning forward and pressing his lips to her. She closed them again and gave into the kiss.
It was exactly like she remembered. His lips were soft but demanding, gentle and yet she could feel all of the love poured into it. He slowed to break the kiss but kept his forehead on hers. “Frankie,” she whispered.
“Abby. God, I’ve missed you.” He kissed her again, a little more urgently. Abby moaned and Frank took his chance, slipping his tongue in her mouth, tasting her again for the first time in five years. God, he missed this, he missed her. It went on for a moment before Frank remembered where he was, who he was with. He pulled back, stepping away from her.  “Fuck, Cricket, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” she shook her head. “It’s my fault.”
“Its never your fault, gorgeous.” He ran his finger through her hair and grasped her at the nape of her neck. “Fuck, you are still so beautiful,” he leaned down and kissed her again.
Abby lost herself. “Don’t leave me Frankie. I – I need you. I want you.”
“I’m yours Cricket. I always have been.” He sighed. “But Mike.”
“Let’s just keep it between us, for now, ok?” She bit her lip. “Maybe see each other when he’s out of town or at work. Just between us.”
“Abby, you’re engaged. Sweetheart, you are with...”
“The wrong man,” she finished. Frank looked at her, shocked. “I want to leave him Frankie. I made a mistake and I want to come... home.”
Home. Fuck that’s all he ever wanted. He cupped her face. “I want you to come home too. But I think we should talk and work things out.  You need to break things off. But, yes, we can see each other in private, ok? I love you, Cricket.”
“Oh Frankie, I love you too.”  She reached up to kiss him again. This time it was with a smile on both their faces. And an audience watching.

Frank: Practice is boring
Abby: Are you supposed to be on your phone?
Frank: No?
Abyy: Go back to practice
Frank: But I miss you
Abby: I’ll make it worth it if you go back.
Frank: Really?
Abby: Maybe
Frank: You can’t downgrade Cricket
Abby: Who said I did?
Frank smiled as he looked at his phone. “That smile cannot get any bigger.” He looked up at a smug looking Johnny.  Frank closed his phone as Johnny sat next to him. “Who are you texting with?”
“No one.”
“You’re a shit liar Adler. You can tell me if you’re texting my sister.”
“I’m not. Just a friend.  Making plans.” He shoved his phone in his bag. “You need something, you nosy bastard?”
Johnny laughed. “Ready to actually practice?”
“Fine,” Frank shoved him out of the dugout as they laughed on the field.
Tumblr media
A couple of hours later, Abby was at her desk, updating the injury report when there was a knock.  She looked up to see Frank leaning on the doorway, freshly showered and smiling.  “I finished practice.”
“I see that. What can I help you with?”
Frank walked in and closed the door. “I believe you promised me something if I finished practice.”
“Did I?” Abby turned back to her screen. “I believe I said maybe.”
“Wow didn’t peg Dr. Hernandez a liar.” He shook his head. “Guess I should go.” He moved towards the door, but Abby ran and grabbed his arm.
“I am no liar, Adler,” she said before pulling him down and kissing him hard.
He looped his arms around her to bring her closer as he deepened the kiss. When they pulled back to breathe, Frank kept his forehead on hers. “Hi.”
“Hi.”
“Miss me?”
“A little,” she smiled shyly.
“God, I can’t get over how beautiful you look in these suits Cricket. Can’t believe you’re a doctor now.” Regret crept in at the thought of how much he missed.
Abby could see it.  “Don’t Frankie. Its ok.” She ran her fingers around the edge of his beard.  “You didn’t have this before. I like it.”  She bit her lower lip.
“I like how long your hair is now Cricket. I’ve always loved your hair.” He ran his fingers through it. Her inky dark hair was straight today. “But I miss your curls.”
“Oh,” she replied, blushing slightly. “Sorry, it's habit for me to straighten my hair.” She looked away from him but pressed her cheek to his chest.
He could tell she was holding back. “Talk to me Cricket.”
She sighed.  “Mike, he’s the one that likes my hair straight.” Tears welled up in her eyes.
“Ok. Its ok.” Frank pulled her in tighter. “You look beautiful either way, my love.” He rocked her to calm her. “Everything is ok baby, don’t cry.”
“Frankie, I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Neither do I, Cricket, but we’ll figure it out.  Where is he?”
“He had to go out of town for business for a few days.”
Frank smiled. “Ok, so come have dinner with us. I have to go on that road trip in a couple of days.”
“I know.  I’m going on the trip as well”. She smiled. “But I would love to have dinner with you.”  Frank followed Abby home and then Abby hopped into Frank’s car.  As they drove, Frank reached over and took Abby’s hand, brought it up to his mouth and gently kissed.  Abby blushed at the gesture, leading Frank to have a big grin on his face.  As they pulled into his neighborhood, Abby became jittery.
“Cricket, what’s wrong?”
“Is Mary going to be mad? I mean, she saw me with Mike and...”
“Don’t worry about Mary.  She’s still like the little four-year-old we used to have. She’ll ask a million questions and you’ll be honest with her.  The one you should be worried about is Scott.  He likes to give the third degree.”
“He does?!” Panic swept over Abby.
“Cricket, I’m kidding. Sorry, that was a bad joke.”  He kissed her hand again. “Scott and I have talked about it a few days ago and while he thinks you should just out and dump Mike, I know its more complicated then that.”
During one of their many late night calls, Abby had explained how the house she currently lived in was under her and Mike’s name and how other assets were the same.  “I can’t just walk away,” she explained. “And no, you can’t just buy my way out.”
“Why not? Gotta use this money somehow.”
“Frankie,” she whined.
“Cricket, please. I want you to leave. I know you’ve invested but just let the fucker have it and I’ll take care of you. You don’t even have to stay in my room.  I have plenty of space.”
They left the conversation hanging from there.  Abby was seriously considering his offer, especially with Mike’s violent tendencies.  That was something she had no intention of letting Frank know about. He would kill Mike, given the chance. “You promise Scott isn’t mad?”
“Cricket, he’s ecstatic that I’m no longer a grumpy bastard, exact quote.”
She giggled. “He doesn’t know you’ve always been that way, does he Frankie?”
“Oh really.” They stop at a red light and Frank reaches over to tickle her.
“No, stop! Frank!” Abby laughs, trying to bat his hand away. “I’m sorry.”
“I don’t think you’re sorry.  Maybe you need to convince me.”
“I can do that.”  She leaned over and kissed him softly.  A horn honked and they looked at the light, which was now green.  “Believe me now?”
“Yes, I do,” Frank said with a smile.  He pulled into the neighborhood and to his house.
“I didn’t get to see much last time I was here,” Abby commented.
“I’ll give you a tour.” Frank got out and went to open the door for Abby. He took Abby’s hand and walked her in. “Formal room, we really don’t hang out here, Kitchen, for snacks.”
Abby smirked. “You still can’t cook.”
“Nope. Scott usually does.” Frank shrugs.  “Anyways, down here is Mary’s playroom and our living room with a Nugget surprise.”  He walks her into a light and airy room that faces out to the ocean. A dark blue section dominates the room with a large flat screen and a dark wood coffee table. Which currently has a dancing blonde on it singing to Spice Girls. “Abby!”
Abby smiles and jumps on the table with her.
Tell me what you want, what you really really want
I wanna I wanna
I wanna  I wanna
I wanna really, really, really  Wanna zigazig, ah
If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.
Frank’s watching from the doorway with a smile and Scott joins him. “She’s here,” he says.
“Yep.”
“How are you feeling?”
“Like this is what we had been missing this whole time.” Frank looks at Scott. “I feel like our family is complete.  You, me, Mary and Abby. It was meant to be like this.”
“Has she left him?”
He shook his head.  “She’s trying to figure out how with all of their stuff. I offered to help but she wants to do this on her own.  Correct her mistake, or whatever.” He sighed.  “I forgot how stubborn she can be. But,” he smiled again, “she’s here and we are going to do everything we can to help her.”
After dinner, Abby helped Mary get ready for bed.  “Can you read to me Abby? Like before?” Mary turned her big blue eyes at Abby. Frank snorted quietly, happy to see she didn’t use those eyes against just him.
“Sure Nugget.” She laid down next to the girl and picked up Charlotte’s Web.  As she read, Frank walks away to help Scott clean up.  When he returns, he finds his girls asleep in Mary’s bed.  He smiles and takes a picture. He reaches and picks up Abby, cradling her to his chest.  As he walks her to the guest room, she stirs. “Frankie?”
“Hi my sleepy Cricket. Just putting you into bed.”
“With you?” Her big brown eyes look up at him.
“Are you sure?”
She nods. “Wanna feel safe again,” she says sleepily, closing her eyes again.
Frank’s brows furrowed at the statement. He turns and goes to his room. He pulls a t-shirt for her and sits her on the bed.  “Here Cricket, get comfy. I’m going to lock the house.”
“M’kay,” she says, taking the shirt.
Frank locks the house and applies the alarm.  Something about the way Abby was afraid In her eyes for just a fraction of a second made him worry. What the hell was happening at her home that she didn’t feel safe? He gets upstairs and sees Abby under the covers. He smiles, kisses her forehead before heading to the bathroom.  Coming back, he removes his shirt, leaving him in pajama bottoms. He climbs in and starts to stare at the ceiling. Is she hurting? he thinks to himself. Not wanting to think about it, he turns, puts an arm around her and pulls her to him, spooning her. He hears her sigh in her sleep.  She’s safe and content, and that’s all that matters to him.  He kisses her head and quickly falls asleep.
Tumblr media
Early morning, and Abby feels warm and comfortable. She wrapped in the scent of Sandalwood and soap. Familiar, comforting, home. She turned to face Frak, still asleep, hair was sticking out everywhere. She smiled and kissed his forehead gently.  She moved to climb out but the arm around her waist pulled her back, causing her to giggle. “Morning baby,” he rasped.
His voice is deep in the morning and Abby squirms, closing her thighs. “Morning handsome. I need to get up.”
“No.”
“Frankie, I need to get up!”
He grumbles and lets go of her. “You’re coming right back,” he orders.
“Of course, love.” She darted into the bathroom, taking care of business and climbed back into bed. She sank back into the bed and into the warmth of Frank. “You are so warm,” she sighs.
“Hmm,” Frank tightens his hold on her. “I missed you here, in my arms.” He gently kisses her neck, then moves to right behind her ear, feeling her shiver but letting a small moan escape. “Oh Cricket, you have to know what that does me.” His hands begin to wander. Abby sighs. “Can I touch you baby?”
Abby whimpers, “please.”
Frank slides his hand down her stomach and to the band of her panties. He looked back at her and she smiled. He dipped below and softly grazed through her folds. Her hips bucked at his touch. “Easy baby,” he coos as he continues to stroke gently. “You’re wet, love.”
“Frankie, please don’t tease,” she whines as he pressed on her clit. She let out a loud moan so Frank covered her mouth with his.
“Cricket, you have to be quiet, baby.” His face was right in hers as he sank a finger into her heat. She screwed her eyes closed at the sensation of him moving his finger. She gasped as he added a second. Her eyes snapped open as the palm of his hand began to rub against her clit. “Enjoy it, baby girl.”
“I – I - ,” she lost her voice as her orgasm washed over her. “Frankie,” she whispered.
“Ah fuck. Cricket, you’re squeezing my fingers. Shit.” Frank worked her through as she twitched. As he slowed, she reached up to pull his face down on hers. She kissed him hard but soon he dominated her mouth.
“I need you Frank, fuck I want you,” she whispered.
Frank pulled his shirt off of her body. He places sweet kisses across her collar bone before giving attention to her rosy nipples.  Abby tried to keep her moans low, but she was sensitive to him. She could feel his erection on her thigh. She forgot how hard he could be when he was aroused. “You are still so delicious and responsive Abigail,” he rasped. “God I have missed this body, these breasts, this pussy.”
“Franklin...”
“Oh and how you moan my name.” Frank scooted up and looked into Abby’s eyes. “Fuck, Cricket,” as his cock touched the heat of her skin. He took hold of his cock and rubbed his tip through her folds. “Are you ready?” She nodded and gently, he pushed into her. Her face was a vision of pure ecstasy as he filled her up.  “Fuck,” moaned Frank as he bottomed out.
“Baby, you need to move,” she whispered. “I don’t know how much more... ahhh,” as Frank snapped his hips. “Shit,” she cried.
“You gotta be quiet baby.”
“I can’t,” she moaned. “I missed you.”
“Fuck, I missed you to Cricket.” He kissed her as he continued to thrust into her. He felt that familiar ripple in his belly. “Tell me you’re close, please baby.”
“Oh Frankie, yes, baby, just a little harder.”  Frank lifted her leg to straddle his hip. “Yes, baby, yes.”  Abby lost sight of the world as she cummed around him.  She was tighter than ever, squeezing his cock it was almost too painful to move. But it was enough.
“Abby!” He finished inside her, pumping his cock in and out to make sure ever drop was in her. He stopped and lay on her, still inside. “Fuck baby, that was incredible.”
“You still got it Adler,” she smirked.
“Yes I do,” he replied with a grin. “Let me get you cleaned up before Nugget makes an appearance.” He took a hand towel and ran some warm water to clean his girl up.  He got her dressed and he pulled his sweats back on.  “Coffee love?”
“Yes please.” She smiled.
“Even more beautiful than yesterday,” he replied with a kiss to her forehead.  He opened his bedroom door.  And found Scott, arms folded over his chest. “Morning?” Frank rubbed the back of his neck.
Scott smiled.  “You’re a dog Adler.” He turned to walk away.  “Good for you.”

Frank stood on first base, the sun beating down as he watched the batter, Johnny on the mound. He leaned in as Johnny let go of the baseball. The Yankee batter swinged and connected, sending the ball right to the short stop, Miguel Rojas.  Rojas scooped it up and launched it right at Frank.  He caught it, never letting go of the bag, making the third out of the inning.  He jogged with a smile towards the dugout, bumping fist with Miguel as they went in. He looked for Johnny, who was in the corner with his eyes closed.
“Storm? You ok?”
“Yeah, Adler, I’m ok.  Just frustrated.” Johnny popped a bottle of water and took a long drink.  “I’m in a slump,” he admitted.
“What are you talking about? You’ve been pitching great.”
“Not a baseball slump.  Watching everything that had been happening with your family, Susie’s been avoiding me, just... my mind is all over the place.”
Frank patted his back. “I never did thank you for all of your support during this crazy time.”
“It was nothing,” he shrugged off.
“It's not nothing Johnny. My little Nugget asks me about you every day. Because she considers you her friend and her family. That’s huge for her man.”
“Frank, I want what you have,” Johnny looked at him directly. “Well not the hard weird stuff, but the family, the home, the dog.”
“You are not stealing Dodger. Worth more than my life.”
Johnny scowled. “Asshole, you know that’s not what I meant.” He closed his eyes.
Frank studied him. Johnny has always been a carefree spirit but lately he had notice he had become more subdued. It was starting to affect his game. And then it hit him. “Come to dinner.”
“What?”
“Come to dinner at my house.  Scott and Abby and mine’s new assistant are joining us, and Abby hired a chef.  We can talk after with a couple of beers.”
Johnny studied his friend and saw the sincerity. “Sure man. Thanks.”
“Best friend man. At least I hope I am.”
“Best friend.”
“Adler! You’re on deck!” The coach yelled down the bench
And with a fist bump, Frank got ready to bat.
Tumblr media
Abby was talking in her office with her assistant, Katie, about the family schedule.  Katie had become Abby and Frank’s assistant in helping them keep their schedules and running the house for them.  They had offered the job to Scott but he wanted the freedom that came with Mary in school. “Katie, let’s make sure that security is aware of Mary’s extracurricular activities for next week.”
“No problem. Any reason?”
“Frank will be on the road trip, and I forgot that I need to be on that trip as well. It's just Scott as Mary’s guardian. Marco shouldn’t have any issues with the adjustments, but I just want to be sure.”  Abby looked up from her tablet.  “Oh, and let the chef for tonight know we have one more for dinner. Scott is bring a friend, he said.”
“Ok. Is it still ok if I tag along?”
“Of course, this is just an impromptu dinner, and I thought my exams with the team were going to be longer than I thought. Normally I would have cooked.”  She shrugged. “When I explained to Frank, he didn’t want me to stress about it.”  Her phone beeped and she looked at the message.
Frankie: Johnny is coming to dinner too. He’s upset
Abby: everythign ok?
Frankie: Its fine Cricket, he’s just needing a break
Abby: okie dokie, love you.
Frankie: love you more.
“Katie, sorry, its two more for dinner.” Abby sighed. “Frank is bringing a friend and with those guys, having more food is better than being short.”
Tumblr media
As Frank and Johnny approached the front door, Frank slapped Johnny’s back.  “C’mon pal, everything is going to be ok.”
“Says the man with the perfect family,” Johnny grumbled.
“Its not perfect. Look at all the shit we’ve gone through so far.  Just relax man, enjoy a quiet meal with friends.”  He opened the door and caught Dodger’s collar before the pup could make his escape. “Mary!”
“Dodger! Come back!” Mary streaked into the entryway. “Thanks!” She took the dog in her arms.  “Hi Johnny!”
“Hey Strawberry!” Johnny kneels down to her level.  “Whatcha doing with Dodger?”
“Trying to teach him to fetch. Can you help me?” Mary batted her eyelashes and Frank snorted, knowing she was going to get her way.
“Lead the way.” Mary took his hand and pulled him back to the living room. “Ok the first thing we need to do is...” he stopped when he spotted a strawberry blonde seated in the room, looking at the tablet. “Umm,” she looked up and recognition hit her face.
“Hi, you must be Frank’s friend.  I’m Katie,” she offered her hand.
“Storm, John, Johnny Storm, I mean...” he ran a hand through his hair.  “Hi, I’m Johnny.”
She giggled. “I know. Best pitcher in the National League, with a 2.69 ERA, second in the entire league behind Othani.”  Katie blushed after she rattled off her knowledge. “Sorry.”
Johnny’s mouth was open and when she blushed, he snapped it shut. “No, that’s impressive.” Johnny flashed her a smile. “I hardly ever meet a girl with knowledge like that. Mostly, they talk about their dress or makeup.” He patted the back of his head.  “Sorry, I’m...”
“Its ok. I think the only other woman I know who knows baseball is Abby so I understand.”
“Well, I’m just going to help Strawberry with Dodger, but we’ll move to the backyard to give you space.’ Johnny stepped back but never took his eyes off Katie.
“Oh, what are we working on?’’
“Fetch,” Mary said. “C’mon Johnny.” She pulled his hand.
“I’m done for the day, I was just catching up on my fantasy team.” She stood up and smiled. “Let’s see if we can get Dodger to fetch.” Her smile was bright, and it took everything in Johnny not to swoon. Frank watched from the doorway. Abby appeared next to him.
“Huh, I did not see that one coming.”
“Just like Susie and Marco?” Frank looked down at his wife, eyebrow raised.
“No idea what you are talking about.”  She gave him a sly smile and he wrapped his arm around her shoulders with a laugh.
“Love you, Cricket.”
“Love you, Frankie.”
Tumblr media
A couple of weeks later, Frank had just come back from a road trip and was in bed with Abby, resting. “I wanted to talk to you about something Cricket.”
“What’s up?” She put her book down and looked at her husband. He was scruffy, his hair a bit longer that suited him. His arm was behind his head, flexing his forearm. God, she loved those arms when they were around her, holding her tight. Pinning her to him as he railed her.  She got lost in the look of him for a second before she heard, “Perv.” She snapped back into reality.  “I am not a perv.  I don’t look at men like this.”  She booped him on the nose.  “Just you.”
“Best you only be looking at me like this,” he growled. He kissed her gently and then moved down to her jawline and neck.  Abby slide down with him, moaning softly as he continued his assault. “Taste so sweet, Cricket.”
“Frankie,” she moaned. “I thought... shit... I thought you wanted to talk.” She closed her eyes as his lips trailed over her collar bone.
“We will, when I’m done.”  He moved to pull her chemise away and kissed the flesh of her breast.  She squeaked when he tugged on a nipple with his teeth, not hard but just enough to bring them to attention. When he’s done lavishing her breasts, he moves south, kissing and licking, tasting the skin that is his. “Always so sweet, Cricket.”
Abby squirms as Frank kisses around her waist. “Frankie,” she mumbles.
“So impatient,” he tsks. He gently pulls the scrap of lace she calls panties away from her body. He sees that she’s glistening for him. He kisses right over her clit, and she arches her back with a soft moan. “So sensitive.” He looks at her face as he teases her clit with his tongue. Thank fuck their room was on the other side of the house from Mary and Scott, because Abby lets out a loud moan from the action.  Frank grins and dives in, sucking and teasing her core, placing a hand on her stomach to keep her from moving.
“Oh god, Frankie,” she cried out as he pushed her higher and higher. “Please, fuck, please,” she pleaded.
He let a large finger get covered in her juices before he slid it into her entrance, pulling out and adding another, hearing her wail as he hit that soft spot inside her. “So tight Cricket, fuck, squeezing me tight.” Over and over, he hit that spot and suckled on her swollen clit before she shattered under hit, eyes rolling to the back of her head, a cry of pleasure leaving her lips.  He guided her through before he pulled away.  He licked his finger clean, giving her a moment to breathe before climbing on top of her.
“I’m gonna fuck a baby into you, My Cricket.”
And he thrusted home. She gasped, his thick cock still surprising her. “Frankie!” she moaned. “So Full!”
“Yeah baby, you like that? Such a good girl, taking my cock so well.” He slides back and thrusted in again, feeling her walls clamp over him. “Fuck Cricket, my queen.” He was slow and steady, hard and deep.
She cried out as he hit that spot that only his dick or fingers could find. “Frank, I can’t.”
“Yes, you can my love. Give me one more. Let me feel you cum all over me.” Frank pumped his hips harder into her before reaching down and stroking her clit, causing her wail as she reached her peak again.  “Fuck yes baby! Ah shit!” Frank roared as cummed in her hard as she pulsed around him. He collapsed on her for a moment before getting on his forearms, keeping most of his weight off of her. He watched as he eyes focused again on him, the dizziness from her orgasm clearing.  He kissed her softly. “I love you, Cricket.”
“I love you Frankie,” she whispered. She kissed his lips and then his cheek as he went to kiss her forehead. He pulled away gently, rolling onto his back. She cuddled into his side; his arm wrapped around her. There was silence for a few moments, just their breathing could be heard as it settled to normal.
“About what I wanted to talk about,” Frank started.
“Is it bad?”
“No, I don’t think so.” He sighed, kissing her hair. “I’ve been thinking about our situation.” She moved to sit up, but he held her close. “No, not that. I was thinking that maybe we should talk to Mary.”
“About what?”
“About becoming her parents.  For real.”
This time, Abby forced her way to a seated position, clutching the sheets around her chest. “Are you serious?”
Frank could usually tell what his wife was thinking. But tonight, in this moment, he was lost. “Cricket, if you think it’s a bad idea or if you don’t...”
“Shut up Franklin.” Abby’s eyes became shiny. “All I’ve ever wanted to do was make Mary our girl, officially.  She’s mine, she’s always been ours.” A single tear fell. “I just thought you never wanted to because of Diane.”
“Baby,” he cupped her face a wiped the tears with his thumbs. “I didn’t want to before because I wanted to do it with you. You’re her momma.” He kissed her gently and Abby cried. “That a yes, Cricket?”
“Absolutely.” She started to get out of bed.
“Where are you going?”
“To tell Mary.”
“Its 1 AM Cricket. She’s asleep.” Frank pulled her back into bed as she pouted. “We gotta talk to Andy to make sure we can first.” He kissed her temple and pulled the covers over them again.
Abby laid down and stared at the ceiling. “We still gonna try for a baby? Because, you know, I have to stop my birth control for that to happen.”
Frank stilled, realizing what he had said in the heat of the moment. “I know.”
“You still want kids with me?” Abby chewed her lip.
“Cricket, I would have a baseball team with you, if you let me.”  He smiled. “But for now, let's just try for one more.”
Abby smiled. “So, this is our new adventure?”
Frank tilted her face up. “The next adventure.”

Four Years Later...
The playoffs this year have been exhausting. Frank was used to it but now, he had one more reason to be home.  The world series would start next week for the Dodgers.  It was their second bid in four years and Frank felt like this was their time.  Johnny was pitching better than ever and the team that Dave and Todd had put together was golden.
As he drove home in his beloved Camero, he thought back on how he ended up here.
The trial for Mike Weiss was long and exhaustive. Mike faught to the bitter end, continuing to claim that he only kidnapped Mary to speak to her, get to know her, since Frank and Abby had forbade him from coming close to his family.  The law was on their side, as Diane provided testimoney of Mike’s obsession in destroying the Adlers from way back to when Frank and Abby first started their relationship.  It had been a 20 year obsession that had catipulted him delusions.
Unfortunately, Mike never saw a day of his sentence.  Frank was disappointed in how Mike ended up taking his own life from an accidental overdose after finding out the guilty verdict. They had given him one week to set up his affairs. Frank didn’t want the man to die but Mike couldn’t live with the idea of going in sober and clean.  The “friend” that found him said he wanted one more party before he went inside.  Was it accidental?  No one will ever really know beside the man who had been Frank’s best friend for 15 years.
Diane was a better story.  After staying for for treatment for a year, Diane was sober and in her right mind.  She had visited with Frank and Mary once, before moving to Maine with her boyfriend.  She told Frank that she would never contest custody and hoped to maintain an “auntie” sort of relationship with Mary.  Abby couldn’t bring herself to face her again.  She had gotten her answers and forgave her former friend.  But she set down the law: her future children would not have a relationship with their aunt. Frank respected her decision.
Bobby Fuller was banned by the league after their investigation into him found his drug use and his collaboration in helping Mike.  At the insistence of Frank, the district attorney did not press charges against him. Frank decided losing his passion, his career was punishment enough.  they never spoke again.
A year after the loss of the world Series, Johnny decided to propose to Katie, at Christmas, on Dodger Field.  Frank had been right that he would propose, all be it, a year later than he thought.  But Katie had a surprise for him after she said yes.  She was pregnant, with twins.  Sam and David Storm joined the family at the beginning of June the following year.
Susie had made an honest man out of Marco in the summer after the first world series.  They bought a house in the same neighborhood as Frank and Abby.  Susie was honored after her discovery of a new star in the sky.  Marco still worked as security for the Adlers, especially after Abby decided to resign as medical director for the Dodgers.  She went to take over as  Chief of Staff at USC.  The hours changed so security for the children had to be updated as well.
Scott and Steve married after dating for three years.  Frank stood as his best man and signed their marriage certificate.  Luckily, the Adler property had a small house in the back that Scott turned into a home for them.  Scott stayed on as the nanny, not wanting to separate from his godchildren.  Steve was so understanding and was happy to be honored as the kid’s second godfather.
Frank smiled as he drove down the familiar street.  The leaves were starting to turn and the air in California finally started to have a chill in the mornings.  He was looking forward to an early morning coffee with his Cricket on the balcony before the kids woke up.  Mary was still working on her science project, a fully functioning telescope from scratch.  The now 14-year-old was in college level science, a brain box just like her mothers.  Susie loved having a prodigy to work with.  She still went to a normal school but twice a week, Susie would take her to her college classes as her guardian and professor.
Turning into the driveway, Frank groaned at the toys all over the yard. “Dammit Mary,” he muttered.  She had just a few responsibilities at the house, and one was to make sure all of the toys were put away for the night.  He looked at his watch.  It was just past eight.  He grabbed his bag and headed into the house.
“Hello, hello!” He called out.
“Daddy!!”
A streak of dark curls rushed at him.  He crouched down and caught three-year-old Lorelei in his arms.
“Hi princess,”he said as he hugged and kissed his daughter.
“Daddy, you were ever and ever,” she pouted.
“I know princess, but I’ll be home for a few days.  Uncle Johnny and Auntie Katie are coming over tomorrow.”
“Yay!!!” She hung on to his neck as he stood up to see his Mary walking over. “Hey Nugget.”
“Hey dad!” Mary hugged him hard. “That was an awesome play yesterday.”
“Thanks.  But you’re in trouble.” Mary looked at him confused. “The toys?”
“Oh, cr-,” she stopped, “crazy,” she said, looking at her sister. “I’ll take care of it right now.”  She darted out the door, Dodger on her heels after getting a pat from Frank.
“Hey Frankie.”
Frank turned to see his girl, his Cricket walking over to him, holding their eight-week-old son, Anthony, in her arms.  “Hi Cricket.”  He put Rory down and took his son in his arms. “Hey little man.” He kissed his forehead and was rewarded with a sleepy yawn and a blink of his ocean blues.  “He’s bigger.”
“Went for his checkup yesterday,” Abby said. “He’s at 12 pounds now, growing like a weed.”
Anthony had been born four weeks early and was just under six pounds when he was born, but healthy.  He had an appetite like his dad, which Abby complained about at the 3 AM feedings.
“I’ve missed you guys.” Frank pulled Abby close and kissed her softly.
“We missed you.”  Abby took his hand and guided him to the counter. “I thought you would be earlier, and I made dinner.”
“Sorry baby, the flight got delayed on the tarmac and I had no signal.” Frank sighed.  “Whatcha make?”
“Lasagna.” Frank groaned as Abby's lasagna was second to none. Abby smiled. “I’ll cut you a piece.”
“You’re the best Cricket.  I should marry you.”
“Already did Frankie. Best decision ever.”
“Without a doubt.”
Later that night, as the house settled for the night, Abby laid Tony in his bassinet. She smoothed his blanket before kissing him goodnight.  Frank leaned over and kissed him as well.  “Sweet dreams, pal. Love you son.”
Abby could never get over how sweet it was to watch Frank with all his kids. He helped with Mary’s homework, read stories to Rory and cuddled with Tony when Abby wanted to take a shower.  This man, this man that she met 20 years ago, was everything she ever dreamed of.  As they climbed into bed, Abby lay on Frank’s chest.  “You’re thinking really loud, Cricket.  What’s on your mind?”
Abby chewed her lip for a moment before asking, “Are you happy Frankie?”
“The happiest I’ve ever been.  Why do you ask?”
“I dunno.  Lots of changes.”
Frank sat up and pulled his wife onto his lap.  “Cricket, winning you back, having our family, it's like beating the throw and sliding into home.  It’s a high that I am so happy I get to live with you.”
Abby melted at his sweet words. “I love you so much Frankie.”
“And I love you, Cricket forever and ever.” He kissed her softly.  “Need some help getting to sleep?” He smirked.
“Always.” Abby giggled as Frank flipped her onto her back, pulled the blanket over them and they sighed.
THE END

Mary Eileen Adler has only ever known two parents: Frank and Abby.  They were her dad and mom for all intents and purposes, regardless of the time Abby left.  She understood that her real mother was Frank’s sister, but she wasn’t her mom.
And she understood that she had a father but that he never acknowledged her so really, he wasn’t anything to her.
So why did Uncle Mike say he was her dad?
As her grandparents drove them to their Boston house, Mary sat quietly, not sure how to ask the questions in her head. Uncle Mike was nice but not nice to Frank or Abby.  She remembered the bruises she saw on Abby and when she asked, she was told she was in an accident.  But she knew it wasn’t the truth.
“Nugget, are you hungry?”
Mary snapped her head up to Frank, who looked concerned. “A little,” she whispered.
“Do you want...”
“I want Abuela’s food. Because it's at home.  And I want to go home.”
The sadness in her voice nearly tears Frank in half.  His little girl is scared and hurting. “Ok Nugget.  We’ll go home.  We have a flight to Los Angeles tomorrow.”
Mary nodded. “You won’t leave me, right?”
Frank almost lost it right there.  He lifted the girl out of her seat and into his lap, adjusting the seatbelt so she could sit the rest of the way home there. “I’m always going to be here for you.  And I’ll make sure nothing happens to you again, ok?  I love you Mary, so much. Abby and I are go so happy you are ok and that you are back home with us.” He kissed her temple and she snuggled into him. “You’re ours Nugget and we’ll fight every day to make sure of that.”
May fell asleep in the comfort of his arms.  They made it to Abby’s parents' house and Frank took her right to the guest room.  Tucking her in, he moved to leave the room, but a tiny hand fisted his shirt.  “Please stay with me,” she whispered.
Frank smiled, scooting her to the middle of the bed, took off his shoes and climbed in. Mary rested her head on his chest and went back to sleep, taking Frank with her.
Tumblr media
Frank sat with a coffee, watching Mary a few hours later as she played in the back yard with Johnny, Susie, Marco and Scott, Dodger chasing her around.  He sighed as he took in the sight.  “Frankie?” He looked over to his wife, who placed some sweet bread on the table next to him.  “Are you ok baby?”
“Yeah, Cricket, I’m ok.  I’m just wondering how I’m going to break this news to Mary.  We have to give her something and she’s too smart not to just start googling everything.”  He rubbed his forehead.  “I was hoping we could have this conversation when she was older, but I guess not.”
“I know Frankie but its better it comes from us.” Abby kissed his head. “Our baby needs to know the truth.” She looked at the group and an idea came to mind.  “How about we do this with everyone here? If it becomes too much, she can lean on Scott or Johnny or Marco or us, whatever makes her happy. She’ll know that she is loved by everyone here.”
“Are you ok with everyone knowing our past?”
“I am not ashamed of how everything got out of sync, Frankie. We were manipulated and that the truth.  Is that something I wanted Mary to know? No, of course not because I never wanted her to be afraid of anything but if it makes her safer, then I will do what I need to do to protect our girl.”  She cupped his cheek and he leaned into her warmth.
“We’ll do it when you parents come back,” he said. “I want her to have all of the support she can have.” Frank leaned into Abby for a kiss. “You said our baby. Did you mean that?”
“Mary is ours, Frankie. Of course I meant that.”
“No I mean, will we have a baby?”
Abby sucked in a breath. “You think you’re ready for that?”
Frank looked at her eyes. “Maybe we wait until this all blows over but yeah, Cricket, I want a baby with you.”
“That good. Because if you wanted a baby with someone else, I’ll murder you.”
Tumblr media
After a dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, the family gathered around the living room, Mary sat between Frank and Abby, chatting with Johnny.  “Mary, we wanted to talk to you about what’s been happening.”
She fell silent as her family quieted.  She looked around and swallowed.  “Okay.”
Abby sighed. “You know how we’ve told you that your birth mom is Frank’s sister?” Mary nodded. “Well, we also told you that we didn’t know who your biological father is, right?” She nodded again. “The last couple of months have been enlightening to us all.”
“What does that mean?”
Frank swallowed. “You remember that Abby was in the hospital?”
“You said she was in accident.”
“She was, Nugget, but not the way you were thinking.  Uncle Mike,” he swallowed, “he...uh... he...”
“Did he hurt Abby?”
“No.” He said firmly. “No, he didn’t touch her, but he knew where your mother was and invited her into Abby’s old house. And she hurt Abby.”
“Why?” Mary’s eyes filled with tears.  “Why would she do that?
“We are not really sure Mary,” Abby said softly. “But Uncle... just Mike, sweetheart, Mike and Diane have their reasons for everything.  All we know is that the police are looking for them and they and we have a lot of questions. Do you have any questions?”
Mary looked at all of the people in her life, her family. “Are they going to take me away?” she asked just above a whisper. “Will they...” tears trickled down her face, “will they take you and Dodger away?” She looked between Abby and Frank. “You’re my mom and dad, not them.”  She began to sob.
Frank immediately got out of his seat in front of her. “Listen to me, Mary.” He locked eyes with her. “No one is going to take you anywhere.  You are coming home with me and Abby and Scott and Dodger.  Johnny and Susie are going to hang out with us. Your abuelos are going to visit and we ae going to visit in the off season but this right here,” he looked around the room, “this is your family. You are my girl,” he wiped around her face to remove the tears. “I won’t let anyone, or anything change that.”
Mary threw herself into his arms as everyone calmed their own soft cries. Mary understood. Her home was with Frank and Abby.
The two people who would do anything for her.
Tumblr media
The morning of their flight home, Abby and Frank sat down with the lead detective on Mary’s kidnaping case, Paul Diskant.  “I’m sorry I haven’t met with you sooner,” he said, after introducing himself. “I’ve been following up with some leads coming in.”
“Any news on finding Weiss?” Frank asked with a hard edge.
Detective Diskant frowned. “No, it looks like he rented a car when he arrived in Boston a week ago and turned it in, but we don’t know if he’s left town or has someone else helping him.  We found the house, just as Mary described. There were no signs that he was going to hurt her in any way. We did find some photographs, surveillance of your family. It was taken by a professional, so I am assuming Mr. Weiss hired a private investigator.”
“Fuck,” Frank mumbled. “What is the next step? We’re flying back to Los Angeles this afternoon.”
“Private?”
“Yeah, after what happened to Abby, I didn’t want to risk a commercial flight.”
“I would like to send some officers to escort your family to the airport, just as a precaution.” Detective Diskant sighed. “I’m going to contact LAPD and advise the detectives on your case, Dr. Adler, what’s happened.  I’m sure, with the coverage it received in the press, they are aware of something but not everything and I want to keep them in the loop.”
“Alright, what do you suggest for personal security?” Frank asked.
“Frankie,” Abby started.
“No, Abigail, we are not discussing this again. I will not allow something to happen to you or Mary or Scott for that matter.”
“Mr. Adler, Dr. Adler, let me make this clear. My recommendation is that your family take every precaution available.  It is clear that your sister and Mr. Weiss are not of sound mind.  He is desperate to get to you Dr. Adler.  Your husband is right.”
Abby stared at the detective for a minute before looking at her husband. “You really think he might try again?”
“Cricket, if it wasn’t for the fact that your entire family is with our girl right now, she would be here with us. I refuse to leave any of you vulnerable again.”
Tumblr media
Departing from the airport, Abby’s parents hugged their daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law hard. “Call us when you get home,” Ana said, cupping her daughter’s cheek.
“It’ll be late, Mama.”
“I don’t care.”  She turned to Scott and Johnny. “You boys behave. “
“We will Mrs. Hernandez,” Johnny said before picking up Mary and carrying her into the plane.
Abby looked around.  “Where is Susie?”
“I think she left her bag in the car,” Scott said.  “C’mon Dodger, let’s get on.”
Abby walked back to the SUV and stopped. She smiled as she spied on Susie and Marco, holding hands and whispering to each other, heads bent closer.  Abby quietly moved away as Marco bent down to place a soft kiss on Susie’s lips.
Frank waited for Abby as Susie came around the side of the car.  “You girls are always late,” he mumbled. He grunted as Abby elbowed him. “What?”
“Leave Susie out of this. She just needed a moment,” she whispered. She pulled out her phone.
Abby: You could always find work out in California  Marco: Why would I do that  Abby: Because a certain blonde may love it  Marco: I don’t know what you are talking about  Abby: Ok fine. Just know, Frank is looking for someone to run security for the family. This could be the opportunity you’re looking for  Marco: Really?  Abby: Call him.   Marco: I’ll do it tomorrow.  Thanks sis.
Tumblr media
Returning to the team and relative normalcy helped the Adlers get back into normal. Frank thought it was a brilliant idea to have Marco be the head of security for the family. He moved Marco into the guest house on his property and Marco took over interviewing and hiring security to protect the family.
Frank had a good couple of weeks, the Dodgers on a run at the moment.  Mary was thriving with camp, Abby found time to work at USC and attend to her duties with the Dodgers and Scott had found a job that allowed him to take care of Mary and work from home.  He and Abby shared an office, which Abby loved as Scott was rapidly becoming her best friend.
Yes, everything was going great.
Unknown: enjoy it while it last  Frank: Who is this?  Unknown: a nightmare

“Mary?”
“MARY!”
Abby began to run up the stairs.  “MARY!”
Scott and Susie followed.  “Abby, what...”
“I let her out of my sight for one second.  Oh my god.  Mary!” Abby looked on the concourse.  “Mary! Scott find security, Susie please look in the restrooms.” The group broke apart and Abby ran down to see if she had just wandered to a gift shop. Her heartrate was spiking, sweat beading on her forehead. It was just one moment that she was distracted. How could she have looked away?  As she ran, her mind whirled. She ran back to see a security guard talking to Scott. “Did you find her?”
“No, we’re locking down the stadium now,” Officer Levinson said. He spoke into the walkie-talkie, calling for a code ADAM and locking down the stadium.
“I need Frank,” Abby said, trying not to panic as Susie ran back. “Susie?”
She shook her head. “Nothing.”
“Fuck! oh my god.” Scott hugged Abby as an MLB official came over. “Did you call for a missing child?” He asked.
“Yes, it’s the niece of one of the players, Frank Adler.  I’m his wife, Abigail.  Our niece Mary went for an ice cream at the top of our aisle, and I turned to look at a play for 30 seconds and when I turned back, she was gone.”
“Alright.” He picked up his phone.  “We need to pull Adler from the game now. It’s a family emergency.”  He hung up.  Boston police officers approached the group as announcement for everyone to remain seated is done.
“Ma’am, what does the child look like?” One officer asked.
“She’s about 4 feet tall, blonde hair, blue eyes.  She’s wearing a white Dodgers jersey with the name Adler on the back and shorts.  Pink sneakers.”
The officer wrote it down.  “How old?”
“She’s nine.  She’ll be 10 next month. We’ve...” Abby closed her eyes. “We’ve been having issues with my ex-fiancé and her biological mother.”
“What kind of issues?”
“She attacked me about a month ago.  We have a restraining order against both of them because we wanted to keep them away from Mary.  Oh god,” she covered her mouth to stop a sob from escaping.
“Abby!” She looked up to see Frank jogging towards her. “What’s going on? They said it was an emergency and...”
“Frankie,” she took a breath to steady herself, but it wasn’t working.  “Frankie, Mary is missing.”
“What?” He looked around.
“I let her get up to get an ice cream and... it was just a moment Frankie, just one and... she was gone,” she hiccupped.  Frank drew her in closer as Abby cried. “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, it was just a moment.”  He could hear Scott on the phone with Abby’s parents, who were in the stand with her brothers, wives and kids. He blinked back tears, needing to remain calm for his wife.
“OK, umm, what do we do?” Frank asked the officers.
“We’ve locked down the stadium,” one officer said.  “We have security looking through the surveillance cameras to see who took her. We’re going to move you to our security office.”
“My in-laws.  They are in the stadium as well.”
A league official came up to them after over hearing. “Name?”
“William and Ana Hernandez.  My wife’s family should all be here.”
“Ok, we’ll take them to a meeting room for now.”  The league office jumped on the phone with the commissioner’s office as Boston PD began asking questions.
After 20 minutes, officials guide them to the offices away from the crowd as they hear the loudspeakers announce a missing child. Frank holds up Abby as she sobs.  “Do you have a recent picture?” An officer asked.
“Yeah,” Frank replied, numb. He pulled out his phone and pulled the picture of Mary he took this morning. “Umm, I need to get to my management and Storm.  He’s a family friend.”
“Mr. Storm is with Miss Storm and Mr. Evans with the rest of your family,” an official said. “Mr. Phelps has been informed of the situation.”
“We are conducting a search through the ballpark, and we are holding all of the spectators in their seats,” a police officer said. “Did you notice anyone out of the ordinary, Mrs. Adler?”
“No,” she whispered.
“Would Mary walk away with a stranger?”
“No,” Frank said.  “We’ve warned her about stranger-danger and all that. They would have either taken her or she knew whoever it was.”
“Does she know a lot of people in Boston?”
“Just Abby’s family.” Frank rubbed his temples. “I mean she knew some of her old classmates, but she reached out to them when we found out that we were coming, and they are supposed to meet up tomorrow. None of them mentioned being here today.”
“Ok. Do you have any recent photos of Mr. Weiss or Miss Adler?”
“Not one of Diane, but Mike,” Abby pulled her phone.  She found the picture from the gala she had taken. “I haven’t seen him in over a month.  Since my attack. Oh god, you don’t think...”
“We’re not assuming anything right now, but we are not discounting anything either, Mrs. Adler.”
Abby nods but leans back into Frank, clutching his jersey as he grips her head gently to hold her to him. “We're gonna find her Cricket,” he whispers soothingly. “She’s going to be ok.”
“She had to be so scared, Frankie.  This is all my fault. I shouldn’t have let her go on her own.”
“Baby, it's not, ok? She should be able to get ice cream and come back. They’ll find her.”
It took a couple of hours to clear the crowd from the field, but there was still no sign of Mary. Frank was leaning his head against the wall as Abby’s head was in his lap, asleep, exhausting herself from all of her tears.  “Frank?”
He jerked awake to see William, Ana and Scott looking at them.  “Did they find her?”
“No, not yet,” William said gently. “We’re gonna take you guys home.”
“No,” Abby said, lifting her head off of Frank. “No, we have to be here so she can find us. Please,” she pleaded with her father, “please don’t make me leave. Mary is gonna find us or she’ll be mad we left her.  We promised we would never leave her. Papi please?” The tears streamed down her face. Frank pulls her back into him, his own tears prickling his eyes.
“She’s not here Cricket. They’ll call us if they find her.  Let me get you somewhere safe, ok?” he whispers.
Abby nods and they stand up.  “We’ll take you to ours for now,” Ana said. “Someone can stay up and wait and take turns.”
“She’s gone?” Abby looks up at Frank.
“We’ll find her.” Frank swallows. “We have to.”
Tumblr media
Twenty-Four Hours Later...
Frank watches his wife, seating at a chair by the window, Dodger in her lap.  Abby is lifeless, staring outside, searching for her niece, their daughter.  He had come to terms with it.  That Mary was more than his niece.  He brought some coffee to Abby, seating it by the table next to her. “Cricket?”
“Where is she, Frankie?” Abby looked up at him, her beautiful brown eyes red rimmed from unshed tears and constant rubbing. His heart broke at how lost she seemed without their girl.
“I don’t know, Cricket. They’ll find her.” He wrapped his arms around her as she began to sob, his own tears falling down his face.  A phone rang in the background, but the couple ignored it, calls having been flooding in since the news broke that she had been taken.
“Are you sure?” Frank heard William’s voice float by. “Ok, we are on the way. Thank you.” Frank looked up. “We need to go.”
“What? Why?”
“They found her.”
Tumblr media
William raced through the streets of Boston as Abby clung to Frank. What did they mean when they said  they found her?  Was she alive? Was she hurt?  All the thoughts ran ramped in Frank’s head, not wanting to vocalize and cause Abby more pain.  They pulled in front of the police station and Abby wouldn't move.  “Cricket, c’mon.”
“No, I can’t. What if....”
“No, don’t think like that.” He kissed her head. “She’s fine and until otherwise, we are not going to think like that.”  He opened the door and helped her out.  They walked the steps with her parents behind her.  They went up to the clerk.  “Hi, I’m Frank Adler and we were called to...”
“Frank!”
Frank turned his head to see a wave of blonde hair headed towards him.
“Mary,” he whispered.  He crouched down and caught her as she landed in his arms, toppling him to his ass.  Abby lowered herself to her knees, took the girl from his arms, crying as she clutched the girl to her chest.  He adjusted to his knees to wrap his girls in his arms, thanking God that she was there with them. It took a few minutes to get Abby to calm down enough to let Mary go to inspect her.  She was dirty and looked tired but otherwise unharmed.
“Mr. and Mrs. Adler?”  The couple turned to an officer. “I’m Detective Carlson.  Can we speak with you?”
“Yes, ok.”  Frank stood up and helped Mary and Abby up. “Mary, can you stay with Abuelo and Abuela please?”  She nodded before hugging him one more time.  He walked Abby toward the conference room and sat her down before looking at the officers.  “What happened?”
“An officer was on normal patrol and saw her wandering down the street.  When he stopped, she asked to be brought home to you.”
“Where was she?”
“Cambridge.”
“That’s four towns over,” Frank sputtered.  “Did she say where she was?”
The detective shook his head.  “We are not allowed to question a minor without a guardian present.  If you are ok to listen, we can ask her now.”
“Abby?” Frank looked down at his wife. “Can you handle this?” Abby was still staring at Mary, who was curled into her abuelo’s lap as Ana continued to stroke her hair. “Cricket?”
“What?” Abby snapped her head back at Frank.  “I’m sorry. Yes, let’s get this over with.”
Frank frowned at Abby, uncertain of where her emotions are at.  He went over to his family. “C’mon Nugget, the police have some questions.”
“Why? I don’t want to talk to them.”  She clung onto William. “I want to go home and see Dodger and Scott.”
“I know, baby, but they need to know what happened. I promise, we’ll go home and see Dodger and Scott and Johnny and Susie.  They are all waiting for you.” Frank moved her hair out of her face. “They just want to make sure they know what happened.” Mary nodded and reached for Frank, who picked her up and carried her back into the conference room.  Mary moved into Abby’s lap as the Detective Carlson set up the camera.
“Ok, so we are interviewing Mary Adler, her legal guardians are present.  So, Mary,” he smiled at the girl.  “Can you tell me what happened?”
Mary looked at Frank and he nodded. “I wanted an ice cream and I asked Abby if I go up to the ice cream man.  He was at the top of the stairs.  I was waiting and Uncle Mike was there.  I waved at him, and he said, I’ll buy you a sundae.  So, I went with him because Frank and Abby said don’t go with strangers, but Uncle Mike isn’t a stranger.”
“This would be Mike Weiss?” The detective looked at Frank. He nodded and the officer turned back to Mary.  “Did he say anything?”
Mary looked pensive.  “No, we just walked out of the stadium to the good ice cream shop and got in line for ice cream, and then he said he wanted to take me to the park across from the field.  I like that park.  We played there a lot. We walked over and we raced around the obstacle course.  I won.”
“I bet you’re fast,” Carlson smiled at her. “What happened next?”
“He said that Frank and Abby wanted me to go to his house because of all the police that showed up. And when we got there, I asked to call them, and Uncle Mike said no. He wouldn’t let me outside to see his yard or anything.  It was really weird.  So, I waited until he was distracted, and I ran out.”  She frowned. “I didn’t know where I was, so I just kept walking and hiding until I found the police man.”
“Did he hurt you?  Touch you in a way that you didn’t like?” Frank tensed at the questions.
She shook her head.  “No, he was just acting really weird.  Kinda twitchy and jumpy.”
“Ok Mary. Can you tell me what color house he was in?”
“It was white and green.” Mary stopped.  “Can I go home now? Dodger is waiting for me.”
“Yes, you can. Thank you for answering my questions.”
“No problem.”  She jumped down as Frank and Abby rose to their feet. She stopped and turned back.  “Oh yeah, he said one more thing.”
“What was that?”
“He said that it was ok if I went with him since he was my real dad.”

Abigail Cecilia Hernandez-Adler grew up in a crazy house. But not like you think.
The youngest of five children, she is also the only girl. Her parents' miracle. Not that they didn’t love her brothers. But she was an unexpected, yet adored by her family, miracle.
Walking towards her childhood home, Mary was chattering as usual.  She loved her adoptive grandparents, well really, her only grandparents, seeing as how Frank’s mother, Evelyn, wasn’t really in the picture.  “Do you think Abuela (grandmother) made my cake?”
“I’m sure she did.” Abby smiled.  Her “cake” was actually imported sweet bread with pineapple jam filling.  Ana could make it, but the local Salvadorean bakery had it shipped fresh every week.  Abby cocked her head when she heard the sounds of people yelling at the television, no doubt a soccer game on the screen.  “I think the guys are already here. Mami said the guys would be here but not the wives.”
Frank groaned.  “So, they are planning on killing me.”
“For what?” Abby asked innocently.
“You know for what,” Frank growled. “I married their baby sister without them there.”
“But Mami and Papi were there. They can get over it.”  Abby raised her hand to knock but Frank stopped her.
“Remember me after I die, love. Don’t fall for anyone else. Especially this asshole,” thumbing back to Johnny. “Be a widow forever.”
“Oh my god, so dramatic.”  Abby knocked and smiled. “Love you, Frankie.”
“I’m seriously doubting that right now Cricket.”
The door flew open with Ana on the other side with an apron already on.  “Since when do you knock?”
“Since you taught me manners,” Abby replied.  She hugged her mother, “Hi Mami.”
“Hola, mi linda (my beauty). Come in! Mi hijo,” she kissed Frank’s cheek. “The boys are in the den with your father.  Oh Johnny, Suzie, Scott, I’m so glad you came.  Oh, mi corazon (my heart),” as she hugs Mary. “You are getting so big.”
“Abuela! I missed you!” Mary hugged Ana hard.  “Is Abuelo here?”
“Is that my Mary?” William came from around the corner and Mary squealed, jumping into his arms. “Oh Nugget, you’ve grown like a foot since Vegas.”
“I have not!” Mary danced around, with Dodger prancing with her.
“To me, you have.  Go,” he pointed to the den. “There are some people who want to see you.”  Mary took off with Dodger following.  William stood up and smiled. “HI, mi hija, Frank.” He gave both of them a hug before shaking hands with the rest of the group.  “How was the house?”
“It was good. A little weird,” Abby offered.  “But it still felt like home. Frank’s nervous.”
“I’m not nervous, I’m cautious.”  William gave him a look.  “The guys are gonna kill me.”
William laughed. “They are not.  They might try but you make their sister happy and let’s face it, they are more scared of her.”
“Hey fools, apparently our little sister can’t even say hi to us,” a male voice says as the group walks into the living room.
“Mami! Isn’t it polite to greet guests as they come into the house and not make them go to you?” Abby’s eyes sparkle as her brother, Marco, blanches.
Ana comes out with her hands on her hips. “Marco, go get your brothers and come say hello to your hermanita and her family.”
“But Mami...”
“Now! Or vas a ver (you will see).” She reaches down for her foot and Marco practically runs into the other room.
“What the hell,” Johnny mutters under his breath as Scott Frank and Abby laugh. Susie shrugs.
“It's called La Chancla, or the sandal.  It’s a Hispanic mother thing.  They throw it at the child who annoys them the most.  It's usually Marco or Robert for us,” Abby explains.  “Frank got it once too, in high school.”
Frank unconsciously rubs the back of his head.  “Ana’s got great aim as well.”  His back stiffens as Marco and three other men enter the room. “Shit.”
“That’s a quarter Frank,” Mary sings, coming up behind them.  “Frank swears a lot and Abby is making him pay for it.”
“Good for her,” the oldest looking at bunch says.  “Hi,” turning to the newcomers. “I’m Antonio,” offering his hand to everyone.  “This is Robert, Daniel and Marco.”
Abby introduces everyone as Ana ushers everyone to the den.  As Frank walks by, Antonio stops him.  “We just need to talk to Frankie Boy here for a sec.”
“Tony...”
“Abby princessa, go talk with your friends. We’ll just be a moment.”
“Its ok Cricket.” Frank nods to her.  “Love you”.
Abby rolls her eyes and sighs.  “Just don’t kill him. I love him too much.”  She tosses her curls around and stomps out of the room.
Frank swallows as he looks at his wife’s brothers. His brothers in law. “Guys look...”
“Shut up Franklin,” Antonio growls. “Did you cheat on my sister?”
Frank is stunned.  “No. I would never.”
“Then the pictures...”
“Were a set-up from Weiss,” Frank said.  “He’s been playing this game with her all because he’s in love with her. Daniel, you remember how he was with her. But I would do anything to protect your sister.  I love her so much. She and Mary are my entire world.”
“You married her without us,” Robert said.
“I know. I’m sorry.”
“Are you going to give her a real wedding?” Daniel asked.
“As soon as the season is over.  Scott and Abby have already started planning.”
“What about your sister?” Marco looks angrier.  He was the closest to Abby since they were only about a year apart.
“The police are looking for her and Weiss. But until they do, Abby will have security when she gets back to work next week.  If I’m not with her, someone else is.  Scott and Susie have been great keeping her company.”
Antonio crosses his arms.  “We’ve always liked you, Frank. But she’s our sister.”
“And I respect that.  I do. But when Abby wanted to get married right away, I had to negotiate...”
“Wait,” Daniel stopped him.  “She wanted to move that fast?”
Frank nodded.  “Yeah, I could barely get her to agree to give me the day so I could get your parents out there.” The look of shock crossed their faces. “Did she not tell you that?”
“No,” Robert said. “I’m going to kill her.” Her other brothers began muttering in Spanish.
“Or,” Frank said, “you could have your revenge.”
Tumblr media
Once the drama of the Hernandez boys and Frank was done, which suspiciously took longer than expected, the entire group sat for the lunch Ana had made. “God, I forgot how good your food is Ana,” Frank mumbled with a full mouth.
Abby smacks his arm.  “Swallow and then speak, Adler.” She rolled her eyes.  “He’s rude but he’s right Mami. I have missed your food.”
“I’ve taught you everything you know, mi hija.” Ana smiled softly at her daughter. “All it takes is practice.”
“Don’t have the time,” Abby replied.  “Besides, I can’t do as good a job as you.”  She took a bite and looked at her friends.  “What do you guys think?”
“It's delicious,” Sue said wiping her mouth.  “So much better than some of the restaurants in LA.”
“Agreed,” Johnny said.  He saw Mary struggling with a piece of meat and reached over to cut it for her.  “You guys coming to the All Star stuff?”
Daniel replied to him, “yeah Frankie Boy sent over tickets for everything.  Me and the boys are bringing our girls, except for Marco. He doesn’t have a girl.”
“Shut up,” Marco said.  He looked at Susie and blushed a little, bowing his head in embarrassment.
“It should be fun,” Frank said.  “I’m in the home run derby this year with Storm.”  He and Johnny high-fived. “First time two players from the same team made it in a while.”
Abby smiled and kissed Frank’s cheek.  She went to reach for her drink but found it empty.  “I’m going to get another.  Does anybody want something?”
“Can I get another beer Abbs?” Robert asked.
“Sure.”  She got up.  As soon as she cleared the doorway, one by one, each of her brothers and Frank train their gazes on the door.
Ana frowned. “What are you up...” A scream broke through the house.
Abby came screaming out and right into Frank’s arms.  “Sp-spi-spider!” She screeched.  She buried her head into Frank’s chest and began to cry.
“Hey Cricket, its ok,” he sooth.
William got up and went to the pantry and walked back out with a giant spider in his hand.  “Antonio!”
“Maybe next time you’ll invite your brothers to your wedding, hermana,” Antonio said.
Abby stopped and looked at Frank. Her eyes became set in fury. “Baby?”
Her head turned as she looked at her oldest brother. “Did you put that spider on the beer fridge handle?” her voice was low and lethal. She got up and started to stalk towards him.
Antonio blanched. “Ok, Abbs, look...” he looked at his brothers.  “It was Frank’s idea,”
“The fuck it was! I just said to take your revenge, not scare her half to death.”
The distraction from Frank’s explanation was enough for Abby to launch herself at her bother and throw her arms around his neck and into a choke hold. “You dick!”
Antonio tried to rip her away, but she was stronger now.  Robert, Daniel and Marco decided to allow Antonio and Abby have at it.
“Abigail Cecilia! Antonio David! That’s enough!” her father roared. Abby let go; both were breathing heavily. “You would think that your mother and I raised animals.” William sat back down in his chair. “Abigail, go sit.” Abby sat back down. “Now, Tony, apologize to your sister and then clean all of this up.  You and your brothers are on clean up duty.” The guys went to protest but William stopped them. “One peep from any of you and you will get a whooping.  I don’t care how old you are.”
“Si, papi,” they all mumbled, throwing daggers at Abby.
“Abby, go clean up the back room.”
“But Papi, I didn’t do anything!”
“I don’t care. You behave like animals, I’ll treat you like one.  And Frank?” Frank whipped his head towards his father in law. “You help her but if she kills you, no one is going to stop her.”  The entire table dissolved into laughter as Frank groaned in his seat.
Tumblr media
As Frank and Abby got ready for bed, Frank tried to talk to his wife.  “Cricket?”
“I’m not talking to you.”
Frank sighed. “I didn’t tell them to use the spider.”
“But you told them to have revenge.”
“What was I supposed to say? Hey sorry that my wife decided not to call you before she got married. My bad?” Frank grabbed her and put her on his lap. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know. I love you, baby.  I’m so, so sorry.”
Abby sighed.  “Fine, but no sex for you.”
“But Cricket...”
“No!” She climbed into bed and turned her back on him. “You betrayed me, so no sex for you!” He climbed behind her and pulled her into his chest.
“Are you sure, my love?” He let his hand glide over her stomach. “You won’t let me make you feel good as a way to apologize?”  He grazed a hand over her panties.  She jerked a little. “So sensitive.” He kissed her below her ear.
Abby gave in with a low moan. “I hate you but you better not stop.”
Frank smiled and began to make his wife feel good. “Never, Cricket, never.”
Tumblr media
All Star weekend is a chance for all the players to relax, if not invited to Boston this weekend for the All Star Game.  Most of the weekend was dedicated into activities for families and meet-and-greets. Frank had been here before, but this was the first year he was happy too.
As a surprise, Frank had new jerseys for Mary and Scott with his name and number. For Abby, he had “Mrs. Adler” on hers.  “Maybe later, you can just wear this,” he whispered to her.
“For my all-star, absolutely.” Abby smiled into the kiss as she put the jersey on over her camisole and jeans.
It was rare when two players from the same team make it to the home run derby. But Frank and Johnny were always the exception and not the rule.  Johnny had been laughing too much to take it seriously and dropped out after the first round.  Frank on the other hand was proud of his swing.  He made it to the face off.
With Bobby Fuller.
When was Frank going to get a break from this asshole?
Frank took his stance as he went to swing away.  Out of the 30 pitches he got, he sent 18 out of the park, with three sailing over the Green Monster.  Mary had been sitting on the field with the other kids and screamed in joy after each one.  Once he was finished, he sat back with the rest of the National League while Bobby went to bat.  With the last hit, Frank held his breath.  But it was short of the wall, giving Frank the home run title.  He had Mary in his arms as he was interviewed.
“So Frank, this has been a big year for you?”
Frank chuckled. “You can say that.”
“New wife, new team. Any other changes coming?”
“Not at the moment.  My family and are finally settled in LA and we like it there. Don’t we?” He tickled Mary. She giggled and ducked her head.
“You’re Boston, born and raised. How good does it feel to will the home run title on your home turf?”
Frank took a moment to look around the stadium. “This place raised me and my wife when we were kids, so it always feels good to be back. And yes, winning the title here is amazing.  I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
“Congratulations on everything, Frank!”
“Thank you!” He waved to the crowd as he carried Mary off the field.
The next day was the actual game.  Frank made a conscious effort to sit away from Bobby and chatted with Johnny and others.
Abby, Scott, Mary and Susie were sitting in the family section, enjoying the game.  It wasn’t so serious, mainly because it was for bragging rights and home field advantage during the World Series.  “Abby, can I have an ice cream?” Mary was bouncing all over the place.
“Nugget, are you sure you’re not gonna get sick?”
“Nope, promise!”
Abby laughed.  “Ok as soon as they come by, we’ll get one.”
“Oh, there is one at the top.  Can I go? Please?” Mary gave eyes.
Abby chewed her lip.  “Ok, but right there and right back Mary. I’ll keep an eye out.”  Mary jumped up and ran up the stairs.  Just then, there was a groan that when through the crown.  Abby looked back at the game. An outfielder from the American League missed a throw and Frank was running from first to second.  The crowd cheered as he slid into the bag, safe.  Abby clapped and then turned back.
To find that Mary was nowhere to be seen.

A/N: I know that "La Chancla" is not something that is exclusive to the hispanic community. However, "Abigail" is a hispanic basis character which is where this is coming from. I hope I'm not offending anyone.

“Adler, I swear, taking you on as a client sounded like a good idea at the time,” Andy said rubbing his temples.
Frank paced in his home office, sipping a whiskey.  Abby had kicked him out of the hospital when it came time for some more test and a bath. When he began to object, she replied, “sweetheart, I love you but you will panic if you see my injuries right now and I have to remain calm. I promise to call as soon as its all over and you and Mary can come back.” She made Johnny promise to stick with him and Johnny agreed as the Dodgers had the day off.
“Andy, I promise to run all life altering decisions by you in the future,” Frank deadpanned.  “Because, you know, I planned for my former best friend to fuck my sister and keep it a secret and for her to go along with it.  And then, hurt my wife and plan her assault.”
“Jesus, I was just making a joke,” Andy replied, taking a sip of his own whiskey.  “Steve said he needs to know how you want to play this so he can get the PR team involved.  Todd said the same.  They have your backs.  I already filed the motions for the restraining orders.”
“Do you think the police can get us something of Mike’s to get a DNA sample?”
“Not without probable cause.  Since there is no proof he was in the home at the time of the attacks, just Abby’s word, I don’t know if a judge will allow it.”
Johnny cleared his throat.  “What about his firm?” Andy looked at him.  “I mean, the law firm works for the Dodgers. They would be nervous to lose them as a client so they might cooperate and help.”
“That’s not a bad idea.”  Andy steepled his hands and pondered. “I doubt they would have anything with DNA on it, but they could co-sign a motion for evidence from the home as a means of showing full cooperation with the Dodgers.  Nice idea, Storm.”
“I’m not just a pretty face,” Johnny smirked.
Frank rolled his eyes.  “Ok, so a possible solution to one problem.  About the announcement...”
“Just post to social media like a normal person,” Johnny said.  “I mean, get with the times.”
Andy nodded.  “I think that would be best.  We can ask Steve, but a simple post and photo should be good. Then Steve can control the post and stuff.”
“I’ll talk to Cricket,” Frank nodded, agreeing. “I think I know which photo I want to use.  And Steve can help with the wording.”
“Good,” Andy replied.  “See, handling problems left and right.  Now about Abby’s care...”
“I’m not leaving her,” Frank interrupted.
“Frankie, you have a contract you need to honor,” Andy explained.
“Andy, I can’t.  She can’t get around and... I’m her husband. I couldn't protect her, so I need to make amends with that.”
“Frank, it’s not your fault,” Johnny said. “You know this.”
“You don’t get it.  My sister did this to her.  My former best friend did this to her.  THIS IS MY FAULT!”
Frank slumped into his chair as the panic squeezed his chest.  “Hey Frank, c’mon, breathe buddy,” Johnny kneeled in front of Frank. “Take a deep breath. Abby is ok, she’ll be all right.  We’ll help take care of her, c’mon.”
“Johnny, fuck, she’s hurting and if I hadn’t screwed up then none of this would have happened.  She would have been here with me.”
“C’mon, pal,” Andy said, squeezing his shoulder. “You were set up; we all know that.  The only people to blame are Mike and Diane.  I will throw the book at him man, but you need to do your job. Abby wouldn’t want to see you like this.”
“Fuck, I just feel so helpless right now. I just want to take care of her.”
“And you are, man.” Johnny sighed. “Scott has to be here with Nugget, so he can be with Abby while she recovers, and I can ask Susie to stop by when we’re on the road. Everything will be ok.”
Frank nodded, his breathing becoming even.  Andy started as well. “Todd and I agreed that Abby needs security for when she is by herself. The Dodgers have already given notice to the law firm that represents them that they are looking for a new firm.  The fact that Weiss was not vetted properly is a problem the Dodgers refuse to overlook.  They are also willing to cover any expenses that may incur to beef up security at your home and wherever Abby is.”
“Ok, ok, that’s good. When Abby is released, she will be with us. What about at the hospital?”
“Stabler and Bensen have requested to have an officer posted on her floor, which was granted this morning.  We can hire private security to start as soon as they are vetted,” Andy replied. “Frankie boy, we are doing everything we can.”
“I know.” Frank’s screen lit up and he checked the messages. “Abby says it's ok to come back.  I’ll talk with her about the post.” He got up and shook Andy’s hand.  “I don’t know how to thank you.”
“Just invite me to your second wedding and name your first born,” he said with a laugh.  He left the home, and Frank and Johnny headed back to the hospital.
“Where is my Strawberry?”
“Scott took her to summer camp. Just for a few hours.  He’s staying with her,” Frank said. “Scott and I are kinda worried about the possibility of someone taking her.”
“I guess that might be a concern.” Johnny frowned.  “Think it would be ok to visit with her before I head to practice?”
Frank nodded. “Sure. I’ll let Scott know you’re coming. I got to get back to Abby.”
At the hospital, Abby was looking in the mirror, observing her injuries.  Her eyes were open, just bruised. She sighed, touching and wincing.
“They won’t heal Cricket, if you don’t leave them alone.”
She turned back to the door and saw Frank leaning in the doorway. “It just doesn’t feel real.”
“This nightmare shouldn’t have happened, Cricket.  Frank walked to the bed and kissed her forehead. “But now you just have to concentrate on healing.” He sat beside her and wrapped his arm gently around her.
“Why don’t you kiss me anymore?” The question slipped out before Abby had a chance to filter it.
Frank frowned. “I kiss you.”
“You kiss my cheek or my head, but you haven’t given me a real kiss since before the accident.” Abby frowned. “Is there something wrong?”
Frank blinked.  “Baby, I’ve...” he stopped. Well, he hadn’t when he thought back on it. He swallowed. “I think I'm just scared I’ll hurt you.”
“Frankie...”
“It’s me, Cricket. I can’t let go of the fact that this is all my fault. I mean, I have no regrets marrying you and making you mine but if we had slowed down, maybe none of this would have happened.”
“But we didn’t Frankie.  We had been together for three years and friends for longer and no matter how long we were apart, it was you who I pictured marrying. It was never going to last with Mike. I don’t blame you at all. You were trying to save me. We just didn’t expect this to happen.”
Frank leaned his forehead against hers.  “I’m sorry Cricket. For not loving on you the way I should.” He pressed his lips to her softly, deepening it after a moment when he heard her moan. He kissed her as long as he could, feeling their relationship snap back into place.
As Frank pulled gently away, Abby whimpered at the loss of contact. “I love you, Frankie.”
“I love you too, Cricket.” Frank kissed her temple and sighed.  “I talked with Andy.  They want us to do a post to announce our marriage.”
Abby crinkled her nose.  “Do we have to?”
Frank chuckled. “Yes, we do. I was thinking of using this picture.”  He showed her his phone.  “And just say, we got married.  Post it and be done with it.”
“And what does Steve have to say about this?”
“He said the simpler the better.  His team can handle the comments and DMs we might get.”
Abby smiled.  “Sure. That sounds good.”
“Perfect.”

A few days later, Abby was released from the hospital.  The entrance was swamped with paparazzi trying to get a snap of the newlyweds as Frank’s post went up the night before.

Their phones had been going off non stop since the announcement from friends, family and teammates.  Abby had spoken to her parents and Frank to some of his teammates but otherwise, they focused on getting Abby home. “I can carry you.”
“I have two legs Frank, I can move on my own.”
“But your ribs,” he protested
“Are fine,” she cut him off.  “Frankie, I love you, but you have to stop.” She gave him a disapproving look when he pouted. “When are you re-joining the team?”
“About that. Cricket, I think I should...”
“Join the team,” she cut off again. “I am fine.  I will stay here with Scott and Mary while you are on away games. Once this,” she waved to her face, “clears up, then I will be back at the stadium.”
“With security,” Frank mumbles as he grabs Abby’s bag from the back.
“Yeah, yeah,” she waives off. “I still think it is too much.”
“Well, I don’t much care,” Frank said.  “I can’t stop you from going to work so I will make sure that everything is done to protect you when I can’t.  Deal with it.”
“Then deal with going back to the team.  The All Star break is coming in a couple of weeks.” Abby reached for her phone to look at the league website as she walked into the house.
Frank walked into the house with her bag. “Fine, but Scott is going to stay with you while you recover and …”
“Oh my... Frankie!” Abby stared at her phone, her mouth agape, still standing at the door way.
Frank turned back to her and frowned. “Cricket, what’s wrong?  Are you in pain?”
“No, Frankie, no!” Abby smiled. “Baby, you were voted into the All Star game!”
“What?” Frank grabbed his phone. “Shit! Hell yea!” He high fived Abby before reading the list. “Storm and I are headed to Boston!” He smiled as he read the list.
“We’ll all go baby.  I can see my parents and brothers while we’re there. Plus, we can decide on a dog for Mary.”
“I guess I do owe her a dog.” Frank sighed as Abby giggled. “You made that deal with her at the wedding and yet I have to do all the work.”
“You are going to love it and you know it,” she replied with a kiss to his cheek.  His phone rang and Abby watched as Frank received a call from management about the vote. She headed upstairs to Frank’s room. When she opened the door, she gasped. There was another dresser added with a vanity that matched his furniture perfectly.  A turn in the closet surprised her with her clothes, all hanging neatly on one side.
“Oh, good, they finished the move,” Frank said as he leaned on the doorway.
“You did this?”
“There was no way I was letting you stay in that house Cricket. I need you in our bed every night. If I forgot something, I’ll buy a replacement, but we are never going back.” He reached for her hand.  “Let me show you one more thing before your head explodes.” He guided her out of the room and back down stairs.  He moved to a closed door.  “Tell me how you like it.”  He opened the door.
Dark blue walls. A Dark wood and pipe bookcases lined one wall, filled with her books.  The floors were a warm sandy wood. The opposite had more shelves and a desk that was the entire length of the wall. The window had a bench seat with pillows and throw-blankets in the basket next to it.
“Frankie,” she whispered, “its beautiful.”
“Since you have to work from home sometimes, I wanted to give you a space for everything.”
“It’s perfect, my love,” she hugged him and reached on her tip toes to give him a sweet kiss.
“Welcome home, Cricket.”

San Francisco
“Man, you have to stop pacing,” Bobby said as he watched Mike pace around his living room. “You’re making me fucking dizzy.”
“She married him!  She fucking married that fucker while she was engaged to me!”  Mike slammed his fist into the wall.
“Watch it, jackass!” Bobby bounced up to inspect the damage. “Will you chill the fuck out?”
“No,” Mike growled. “I was supposed to win and all he got was that brat of Diane’s. Couldn’t convince that bitch to get an abortion and now she’s a pawn in this game,” he muttered.
“What are you talking about?”
“Mary! She wasn’t supposed to be in the plan but now she is.”
“You can’t attack a child, Weiss!” Bobby yelled.  “No where did you say that there was a child involved.”
“That’s because she wasn’t supposed to exist.” Mike continued to pace, lighting a cigarette.  “Fuck a girl a couple of times and look what happened.”
“You fucked his sister?!”
“Diane was hot way back when. Of course, I fucked her.  He was dating the true love of my life and the four of us were always together.”
“Do they know that?”
Mike scoffed, “of course not. Do you think I wanted to die?” Mike rolled his eyes. “Frank was out of town for baseball and Abby had gone to visit family in Texas and it was just Diane and I.” Mike ran a hand over his head. “We’d been drinking and well... Mary. When Diane told me, I told her to get rid of it.  That I wanted no part of raising a baby. I had plans, fucking plans, to win Abby.”
“So why did you call Diane in?”
“She was supposed to come and argue for custody, not attack Abby. When I left, I didn’t think she would become unhinged.”  Mike picked up his phone and messaged Diane.
M: You fucked up the plan
D: she deserved it
M: She doesn’t have full custody of Mary, Frank does
D: whatever
M: That’s my woman you are talking about
D: I’m your woman.  and the mother of the child you are trying to take
M: I’m not going after Mary
D: You should, could break Frank
D: don’t you want to see that
Mike contemplated that scenario. Yes, it would break Frank to lose Mary. And a broken man can’t keep a woman happy. The first step would be to prove that Frank was an unfit parent.  A plan began to form in his mind as an alert came in on the All Star selections.  He smiled sadistically.
M: You’re right. And I think I know how to do it.
Mike looked at the list and saw Bobby’s name. “Congrats on the all star selection.”
“Thanks,” Bobby smiled and took a long pull of his beer.  He looked at Mike’s face.  “I don’t like the look you have.”
“I think its time I went home and visited the family.”
“What family?”
“Mary’s,” as he flashed Bobby the list with Frank’s name. “I am going to fuck with this entire family.”
