Trigun Bookclub: Trigun Vol.1, Chapter #03

More Trigun annotations! I'm doing a deep-read of the Japanese original print (reread) and Overhaul 1.0 (first read) side-by-side, and writing down everything I notice from small details, version differences, translation differences, etc. (and being so so gay about the characters. of course)
As always, here are the non-analysis panels of my dear babygirl (+ memes)...

Starting off with the chapter cover of our handsome boy, this is the first time we see him with his glasses! I've seen someone on Twitter make a guide on Vash's different glasses designs over the manga (sadly it either cost money or was only distributed at a con and I don't have it...), so I'll try to pay attention to that during this readthrough.
As I've mentioned in the previous chapter, his antennae used to stand straight up, but they're bent now! They pop back up once in a while but from here on, the default is bent.
I love how gently he sets the girl down, and also the way everyone waits in awkward silence (and confusion) for Vash to move the rubble.
I think this part works excellently as-is, but notes on the nuances of what Nebraska originally said (this was ridiculously hard and the translation is very rough):
①「絶対どこかで不都合を並べた奴を消して来てるのさ」
②「なぜなら」
③「現におまえは消される側にまわってねえ……！！」
↓
① There has to have been a time when you "eliminated" ("erased"/killed) someone that got in your way (/someone unfortunate enough to [be there]...etc).
② Because...
③ In reality, you haven't taken on the role ("side") of being eliminated...!!
This part's very hard...
He's talking about something similar to offense/defense. In this case, it's that because Vash has been avoiding conflict/being in direct danger entirely, Nebraska is saying that Vash must have killed, directly or indirectly, someone who got in the way of Vash's fleeing.
I think.
I'm not sure why, but the way this was phrased stuck out to me.
Also, Gofsef's fist had an extra knuckle for one panel.
A translation error - it should be something like "He shot every bullet into the same precise spot... And shifted its trajectory!?"
Vash says "JACKPOT!" in English here, in the Japanese version. also hes soooo handsomeeeeee look at him omgggg kicking my legs back n forth blushing giggling i need to be tranquilized.
Nebraska's straight-up being crushed into pieces here. goddamn.
Not sure if it was removed in one of the reprints or in Overhaul's cleanup process, but in my Japanese copy, there was a "thump" onomatopoea of the guy backing into a wall.
Milly and Meryl are the best comedy duo in the world... They're perfect...
The tiny speech bubble actually says something like "They're goofing all over the place..." The word ボケ (boke) is the funny man in a manzai comedy duo (as opposed to the straight man), and/or the jokes that the person in that role makes.
YIPPEE!! (In Japanese, it's one continuous exclamation ↑ like so. Also, there are tiny music notes around the handwritten text in the wahoo speech bubble.)
Vash runs out of breath after celebrating (cleaned up in Overhaul). God he's so silly...
A small error - I would phrase Meryl's line as "[Now, now,] Don't get too ahead of yourself."
I love how in Japanese, Meryl calls Vash "a very dangerous person with chronic troublemaker disease (慢性トラブル症)." I'm saying this from now on.
She also sarcastically says that she's grateful of the stars' alignment that they were able to meet, while gorilla gripping Vash's hand.
Also, I never noticed how fucked up Nebraska's body was!? Maybe the memories just got rewritten by Stampede. but goddamn. gun for legs...giant mechanical hands...
Vash making a Kirby Ꙩ.Ꙩ face my beloved. just a little guy!! with some badass girls!!!
The last line is 「…はい？」 which is like what??/huh??/alright?? etc. はい is a very versatile word ☝ lol

Bonus thoughts: Oh my gosh, it’s finally over! So Knives was defeated, kinda. I dunno, Vash kinda lost the fight but Knives carried him and flew away. They got help from a father and son then Knives used the last of his powers to grow an apple tree and faded away. Which made me wonder if things would’ve worked out if Knives was still around for redemption. Meryl and Milly are now reporter girls (that spider TV looks so cute) and looks like everybody got a TV! Nice to see some of the characters we ran into in the past are here and doing well! Looks like Vash will keep running and running, but at least the world looks a little more peaceful.

chap 1:

Gods, his hands. This is so much more traumatic in context.
NIGHTOW, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING HERE, LITERALLY ON THE SAME PAGE AS THAT NIGHTMARE?!?!
NM, it's just Vash's bad driving. Or maybe he noticed WW wasn't sleeping so good and decided to unsubtly wake him up?
LOL, I have SO MANY THOUGHTS about what's going on in WW's head here, but they're all spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself.
LOLOLOLOL, WW dragging unconscious Vash into the inn and demanding two rooms is just so funny to me. Like, no wonder these people are staring at him like that. They must have SO MANY QUESTIONS.
I assume there will only be one room. And one bed.

I wish I could find a suitable picture to show just how much this building looks like the old Spanish missions dotting the landscape in certain parts of the Southwestern U.S., but it seems like 99.9999% of the pictures are of the buildings inside the walls... or of the ones that have been extensively renovated rather than having crumbly bits like so many of them do. (Also, it's late and so I can't be arsed to do a detailed search. Maybe this will help get my point across? IDK, I'm not writing an essay on Spanish missions right now. I already did that back in 4th grade.)
If I had a son who was recklessly hellbent on getting himself killed alongside me as I defended the town/inn/whatever, I'd tie him up and lock him away, too.

Some quick Spanish notes on page 134 here for those who may not hear these terms so frequently:
Mi Amigo = my friend (may not actually indicate a friend; can also be used to create a mock-friendly tone in a situation where intimidation is coming into play)
Jefe (pronounced "heh-fay") = slang term meaning "boss" or "leader" (can also be used sort of like "man" or "dude" in English, or in a mock-friendly tone to kinda rub in that the person being called "jefe" is not in charge of the situation)
Comprende? = Do you understand?
This guy has too many teeth. And a weird way of standing. Is... is he wearing metal underwear?? What kind of weirdness do you have to go through to get this kind of anatomy? How does he close his lips??? M... maybe it's a mask of some sort??

Ohhhhh, shit.
Ok, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I love the absolute chaos of the top part taking over the whole page, with this guy's shouting bearing down on Vash and the family from the top, claws sweeping in from the left with a motion so fast and deadly it leaves motion lines going all the way up the page... and then, cutting in at the bottom, in a panel that's practically pure-white serenity, the soft but definite *click* of the Punisher's machine gun opening. Beautiful.
And, of course, we turn the page into a two-page spread of Wolfwood letting 'er rip, adding a more controlled and entirely different type of chaos to the scene.
LOL, BF's mad. Just a little, though. Confusion has tempered his anger.
Ok, this, though. How the angle goes from him carelessly tapping Vash on the head with his gun (while practicing shit trigger discipline, I might add) to us looking up at Wolfwood from a perspective very close to what Vash's would be if he could lift his head. How, in the second panel, Wolfwood looks like a desperate man about to pull an executioner's trigger out of fear and confusion for the unknown before him. How, even so, he's debating if Vash is actually the monster he's heard of when there's so much evidence that, despite superhuman skills that Wolfwood has witnessed multiple times firsthand, Vash seems so kind and cares so much for people he ends up in this situation even while half-dead.
Meanwhile, Vash seems to be taking well-deserved nap....

I do like how the belts on his lower arm actually resemble the belts on Vash's.
Eyyy, it's the Gung-Ho Guns in their Palace of Terror! (I don't know what the place is called, but I assume it has an over-the-top name. It needs an over-the-top name.)
Is... he trying to create an angel arm?? Put that away, Knives. You don't know how to use it.
Oh, maybe... he was trying to locate Vash?
This looks like a flashback, but I'm not sure what it's flash-backing to. Oh! Vash's hair is full blond! Definitely a flashback.
Uh. Is his arm not a prosthetic???
I love how completely lost and confused he looks here.
OMG HIS FACE!!! Babygirl is SO WORRIED about Wolfwood! (Also, I know we all love spiky-haired Vash, but goshdarn, I just melt for his hair when it's all messy like this. It makes him look even softer than he already is.)
And then again when he sees the girls! Gods, he looks like he doesn't believe what he's seeing... which, to be fair, he could be forgiven for given all he's been through recently.

LOL, Vash, maybe don't scream at your buddy, the (former?) Gung-Ho Gun with the big-ass murder cross and a huge chip on his shoulder, as soon as he starts waking up in a strange place where he doesn't have his bearings yet. I swear, Wolfwood's like a startled cat here.

Something something what I said last time about Vash wishing maybe Wolfwood was around to pull the trigger where he couldn't.
"Feh!" is Wolfwood's way of saying, "I accept your apology, you big dummy."
"You mean it didn't tug at your heartstrings?" VASH. ARE YOU FLIRTING.
Wolfwood clearly doesn't appreciate self-deprecating as a form of flirting. Good for him. We don't build ourselves up by letting others tear themselves down.
(I know I'm being a bit ridiculous with these last two points. Vash likes to encourage people and make them feel good about themselves. But still, it's a sensitive and very kind thing for Vash to say, all things considered, and good on Wolfwood for calling him out for how he's going about it.)
"He really just says whatever stupid shit that comes to his mind." That makes two of you.
Actually, the idea that Vash is just spouting off words without thinking them through is a gross misreading of the situation by Wolfwood (assuming he actually believes that). Vash's surprise and frustration that his words didn't appear to have the intended impact on Wolfwood mean Vash put a decent measure of thought into them before saying them. Vash spoke with intention, not rashness. Very little Vash does is actually rash, even when it appears otherwise, and in this particular situation, he's basically told Wolfwood he put thought into his words. I'd guess Wolfwood's misunderstanding has a lot more to do with his own conflicted feelings than anything else.

I liked how Stampede switched this reaction to a similar photo to Meryl.
Gods, girl needs to find a guy closer to her age and move on.
Ok, question: why did they even bother to show us Knives and the Gung-Ho Guns at the beginning of the chapter???

You know, you really shouldn't smoke when you're in recovery. It slows healing times. Unless you got some of them fancy-pants Stampede blue vials on you, Mr. Wolfwood?
UGH HIS FACE. Wolfwood looks just... dead inside. He hates his life. This is the look of a man full of regret.
So, I'm guessing that while Wolfwood knows Vash is Knives' brother, and knows that those two are somehow related enough to Plants for Knives to have been reborn out of one, he doesn't quite know whether Plants maybe have weird regenerative abilities that Knives took advantage of or whether there's something unique tying Vash/Knives to the Plants... or, at least, what the nature of that tie is.
Ohhhhh, that's what the flashback in the last chapter was to.

To be fair, you don't have to be a comic artist to be this awkward the first time you meet people whose work you're a fan of. I want to think his "death" here is him trying to add "desu" to English because he wants to come off as very, very polite to these people he admires, but... like... English doesn't work that way.
