Photos by @amivitale. I am honored to share this beautiful story from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in northern Kenya that @cnn just published. For years, baby elephants lived off powdered formula — the same used for infant humans — at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in northern Kenya. But when global supply chains were severely disrupted by the coronavirus, the sanctuary had to find a more dependable source of food for its calves, who had been either orphaned or abandoned. Fortunately, the answer was right in their backyard. The sanctuary experimented and then moved to using local goat's milk instead of the expensive formula shipped from thousands of miles away. It’s also brought about a shift in the relationship between the community and the calves. Not only is it more nutritious for the elephants, it is also more sustainable for the planet and it is empowering the women in the community who are benefitting from this new source of income. Little Kapai out on the daily nature walk with all of the orphans from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). He was rescued by the Reteti team when he was only about a week old and is doing wonderfully. Having arrived so young, he had a lot to learn about being an elephant, but he had the rest of the Reteti herd and his keepers to show him how to browse, graze and navigate. Someday soon, he'll be big, strong bull, ready to return to the wild. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is the first ever community-owned and run elephant sanctuary in Africa. It provides a safe place for injured and orphaned elephant calves to heal so that they can be returned back to the wild. Oh Lord . . . Repost from @r.e.s.c.u.e • Casual and relaxing afternoon strolls is exactly what this little cohort of elephants deserve. Longuro leading the way with Loteku, Bule , Sera and Lomunyak they are a tough little team. Survival is not for the faint hearted.. They bravely battled their injuries and won. The scars , mental and physical are fast fading away, especially for Longuro and Lomunyak. It’s a huge amount of love and energy from the team that get them this far and they still have a long way to go! For now, peaceful walking in the wild with their human keepers will be how they spend their days until they are big enough to join the older orphans who go out for much longer more strenuous walks . In the second video, you can be reassured by seeing an adult female keeping an eye on him. Many of you asked about his family, expressing some concern for him. Elephants have extremely strong bonds within their family. This is why poaching, culling, hunting, tourism (elephants used in entertainment) impact the herds together with the bonds the bulls establish with their mates once they leave the herd. Elephants are sentient, they do think, they do feel and they do have the presence of mind to understand their surroundings. They are highly intelligent animals and they are highly evolved animals.
