#NomzeeDay ... this is my 2nd all time favorite piece by #NormMaxwell (@normmaxwellstudio).. I can never remember the name but everything about this speaks power to me. From the abstraction of the #flag to #bandana and curlers on the woman's head. This made me think of single black mothers in the inner cities that do what they have to to see their children to success. It often reminds me of my mother. Strong, innovative, loving with survival skills like an African lion. Everything about this speaks to the strength of the black woman. You see those red, white and blue rollers though? On this morning #Nomzee called me like "Yo! What you doing? Get up and come with me to shoot this mural in Burbank..." of course my answer was "Bet, when you ready?" .. We went up to this private building, let in by a guard and then proceeded to see these massive artworks that Norm has in this private corporate collection. I walk in and go "WTF! How did I not know about this!?".. he says "Well, you know now! Today for me is #NomzeeDay (7/12). It was today a year ago we lost our brother #NormMaxwell (@normmaxwellstudio) ... Miss this brother dearly. His insight into life, his jokes and his courtesy. I first met Norm by accident when I first moved to California. After doing the Fairfax shuffle through the street wear brands, I stumbled into this gallery with a bunch of dope work in the window. I went in with a friend of mine and was floored at the work. I had never seen artwork like this before or if I have I definitely wasn't paying that close of attention. We talked for about 25 min, realizing we both were from Philly and had a lot of mutual friends in the city. From there I felt super inspired and felt like I found a place of solitude in LA. My homegirl eventually bought a piece (she bought a ton of work that day) and still talks about that day today. I took it as a great convo with a great artist.
