#no sketch for the background we make color scribbles like men

twitter enjoyed my sketch vs final so I thought I'd post here too! I always really like seeing people's process.
I end with very tight sketches because working out little details early on is important to me. Often I'll just lift the face into the lineart because there's nothing left to do. I also can't leave it alone until it's exactly right so going over it again doesn't do me any good.

Do you have any advice on learning to paint in the fashion that you do? Like tutorials or preferred methods of working?
Ahhh I honestly think my most recent tutorial was this dopey one i posted to deviantart. It has a bit on my sketching process and how i block out faces.
50% of my process is ‘feeling a motion’ where i put in one piece of the art (usually the figure) and then sit there scribbling lines of motion to base the background or abstract swirls on. Its how to get the dynamic POW some people like without straying more into stylized foreshortening (which i suck at)
Tumblr media
I wanted the boy here to be kind of ‘touching down, stumbled to a stop after a grand motion but still poised and ready’
so he’s balanced on one toe, his hair is showing the abrupt stop, and the balanced sword shows the exact motion line.
Tumblr media
the other 50% is usually just rendering and tossing in colors. I kind of like some mix of painterly chaos and like, ‘Leyendecker’ angles. I do NOT recommend greyscale to color process for that effect. I use that only if i’m forced to kicking and screaming for a complicated bg.
Tumblr media
you can tell at this point that one leg is back, one is forward, base color shading
Tumblr media
now i just outlined some shadows and added some contrast to the edges--you can leave something very unfinished as long as it has a contrasted edge (thats why lineart works!)
just keep blocking smaller and smaller, then choose where to ‘texture’ to make the surface look accurate.
Tumblr media
and now i go back to the highlights and outline them in a slightly more saturated color. It’s a light refraction thing that i have fun exaggerating on skin right before the shadow too.
Tumblr media
toss some premade patterning on that because we respect ourselves and dont redraw it every damn time
Tumblr media
and a final pass of highlights to merge the patterns and texture into it.
also no airbrushes or blenders we die like men !!

Zine
What is a zine - A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images.  Zines are either the product of a single person, or of a very small group and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These four zines caught my eye because of the black and white sketch style. There is a page on one of the zines that has a red background which is really making the image pop out. The red in my opinion is such a vibrant colour. The zines (except one page) are in black ink with a white background. In the zines above, I think that while they were creating it, they had minimalism in their head. Looking closely to the zines that I have picked, some look to be zines that have different graphic artwork in them. There are also some zines that looks like it talks about abortion. I think once again the design looks really cool. It’s not overly complicated with a bunch of graphic artworks. It looks simple and easy to replicate. For me personally, I like minimalistic sketches that are in simple black and white artwork, so they definitely caught my eye.
What is an illustrator ?
An illustrator is an artist who specializes in enhancing writing or elucidating concepts by providing a visual representation that corresponds to the content of the associated text or idea. The illustration may be intended to clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually. The easier definition of what an illustrator is would be a person who draws or creates pictures for magazines, books, advertising, etc.
                                    18 Different illustration styles
1. Wood cutting
2. Metal etching
3. Pencil illustration
4. Charcoal Illustration
5.  Lithograph Illustration
6. Water colour illustrations
7. Gouache Illustrations
8. Acrylics Illustrations
9. Collage illustrations
10. Pen-And-Ink Illustrations
11. Free hand and digital illustrations
12. Vector graphics
13. Concept art
14. Childrens book illustartion
15. Comics / Graphics Novels
16. Advertising
17. Packaging
18.  Branding logo
3 Illustrations Types That I like
Pencil Illustration
Tumblr media
Pencil sketches have such a raw beauty in line, form and value that really captures the essence of an object whether it is a simple outline or a hyper-real drawing. Who hasn’t started drawing with pencil sketching? From doodles, scribbles to stick men, pencil sketching is the basis from which we all learn the freedom of line and freedom of expression in drawing. I’ve always loved the simplicity in picking up a pencil and drawing something.
Watercolor illustrations
Tumblr media
In watercolor illustrations, the main thing is to use color pigments and to create nuances and different transparencies by adding water to the color. The overall feeling of watercolor illustrations is soft, airy, with lots of depth. Illustrators prefer it for illustrating of cookbooks, feminine and fashion types of illustration, children book illustrations, as it is very light. It is one of the easiest ways of creating splashes of color, merging one into another – common threats for the mentioned illustration styles. From dancing, vibrating light-filled passages to richly colored transparent dark, from cascading wet washes to staccato dry brush effects, watercolors can produce painting effects that can easily catch anyone eye. That’s why I like it.
Collage illustration
Tumblr media
Collage comes from the French coller, which means ‘to glue’. I would say that this is a CUT COPY PASTE theme when it comes to ZINES. It is a technique, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, often from different materials, to form a new whole. This type of illustration is hugely popular in the recent years, and even is considered as an inspiration for the big trend – material design. Often, illustrators use the shading from the different layers of their collage to achieve a beautiful 3D effect and to achieve depth.

A Ghost of a Chance-Newt x Reader
Fandom: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Characters: Newt Scamander, Reader
Pairing: Newt Scamander x Reader
Notes/Warnings: Um...it’s fluffy and there’s a ghost? So if you’re scared of ghosts, don’t read
Word count: 2043
Prompt: “We’re in an abandoned lodge in the middle of nowhere. Sure, you’re totally right, nothing bad could ever happen here.”
Tumblr media
“No.”
“Love, it’s the only place that’s close by.”
“And we can’t apparate to a town, because?”
“Because it may upset this Ness and we would lose all our progress with gaining its trust.”
You stared at Newt as though he had grown another head, before looking at the small lodge that they stood in front of as the downpour continued around them, before looking back at the large lake on the other side
“You want us to stay here…”
“Yes.”
“For the entire night. In that?”
“That’s the plan. Don’t worry, nothing bad will happen.”
“We’re going to be in an abandoned lodge in the middle of nowhere. Sure, you’re totally right, nothing bad could ever happen here.”
He looked at you and finally you grumbled and spun around, storming to the abandoned lodge.
“If I die, I’m haunting you.” You warned as Newt followed and you couldn’t mistake the chuckle.
“You’re worried? Now you know there’s absolutely nothing for you to worry about.”
You gave him a look to not push it, pulling out your wand and gently tapping the knob muttering ‘Alohomora’
Slowly the door opened with a creak and you stared at the sparsely furnished room. You looked at Newt as he entered, a soft glow on the tip of his wand and you sighed.
Of course staying in a place that looked like it hadn’t seen human contact for years would be something that Newton Artemis Fido Scamander would find perfectly alright.
Sighing, you wrung your hair out, pausing when you thought you saw a shadow. You aimed your wand in that direction of the shadow, and could have sworn you had seen...something...but-
“I’ve started a fire and-”
You squeaked and spun around, nearly smacking Newt in the face.
“Merlin’s beard!”
“Sorry! Sorry!” You gasped, clutching your chest. “I guess...I’m a bit...jumpy.”
“Jumpy? Seems you’re beyond jumpy.”
“Oh shut up! This scenario is basically the beginning of every horror story told around a campfire!” You hissed and even in the shadowed light, you could see Newt was trying hard to not snort. “Oh you’re such a jerk!”
He kissed your cheek gently and you huffed, blushing brightly.
“Sorry, Love. Don’t worry, nothing will harm you here.”
No sooner did he say that, did the wood creak loudly and you could swear you heard footsteps intermingled in it. You froze and looked up, brow furrowing.
“...Newt?” You asked, glancing at him as he looked up, his own brow wrinkling.
“Probably a local creature. I can imagine that creatures and animals would stay here during the rain.”
“I...guess…” you muttered, but you couldn’t miss the feeling that someone or something was watching you. “I’m going to go change.” You finally said, but Newt didn’t seem to hear you, still looking up. Grabbing your travel bag, you headed down a small hallway to find some resemblance of privacy. You shuddered as a breeze chilled you and after wringing your hair out again and after tying it up with a ribbon began to peel off your soaked clothes.
A drying spell couldn’t even completely dry these off.
Sighing you placed them down and summoned some dryer clothes, changing quickly and hurrying over to where Newt was. The warmth of a fire was welcomed and he stood up.
“Better?”
“Mhm.” You said with a smile, sitting down next to him, leaning onto his side. He blushed leaning over slightly and pulling his coat to him and then settled it onto your shoulders. You smiled gently, blushing and kissed his cheek, chuckling softly as he sputtered, his face turning a bright, bright red.
It was still raining as the night dragged on. Newt stared at the ceiling, listening to the water hitting the window and dripping down in openings from the roof.
Not exactly the driest of places, but it was better than completely outside. He glanced over at (Y/N), smiling as she shifted sleepily, curling up to his side as she continued to sleep.
If it kept raining at this ferocity, the risk of a landslide or mudslide was going to grow rather quickly. Sighing, he settled against his pillow, his eyes slowly drifting shut. He didn’t know how long he was asleep before he abruptly woke up to...something.
Blinking wearily, he struggled out of the foggy haze of sleep to see a strange glow. He blinked and looked up.
And froze.
A human girl, a ghost was floating above (Y/N), staring at her almost curiously. He stared at this woman, his eyes widening slightly at how young she was, possibly a few years younger than him. And he knew if (Y/N) woke up, she’d be screaming bloody murder. She hated ghosts, and even those in Hogwarts had made her uncomfortable. If she awoke to see this one hovering over her…
His train of thought when the ghost seemed to sigh, almost melancholic as she reached her hand towards (Y/N)’s head. Newt’s arm tightened out of reflex on her hip, and the ghost seemed to notice that he was now awake and she moved away, smiling sadly.
“Stranger, take heed. Listen as I plead. Beware the hillsides of the loch or grow used to the taste the dirt and rock.”
He stared as just as suddenly, she vanished. He blinked several times, unsure if he had just witnessed an actual event or he was more sleep deprived then he had originally believed. He glanced at (Y/N) again, who muttered in her sleep and buried herself in the blanket and closer to him. He looked at her, frowning worriedly, wondering what was going to happen.
You glanced at Newt as he continued to sketch Ness, sighing. It had been three days, and ever since you had woken up after the first night, he had been so bloody protective over you, always making sure you didn’t wander too far off.
It’s not like you sought trouble, and he knew that. So why the bloody hell was he acting like this? It was bad enough you were getting the chills left and right. Probably a cold for being in the rain the first day.
“Newt, I’m going to go check on the other creatures.”
“I’ll be done-”
“Newt, I’m just heading back to the lodge. I’ll be fine.” You said, “and you need to finish your notes for Ness.”
“But I-”
“I’m alright. I promise.” You huffed and stood, leaving and not letting him finish the argument. You started the trek up to the small lodge, grumbling under your breath.
Honestly that man was one of the most infuriating men you had met. Could he not trust you for a simple short trek?! Another chill went up your spine and then a snap of a twig. Anger blossomed in your chest.
“Newton Artemis Fido Scamander, I swear to Merlin I am-” your rage vanished as you turned to see a woman now standing directly behind you and you all but flew backwards in panic as the woman stared at you with dark blue eyes, hair floating around in unfelt wind, and you saw the background of the scenery visible through her. You took another step backwards, the scream building in your throat, but was unable to voice.
She moved towards you, pointing silently.
“N...New…”
The name couldn’t get past your lips. Another step backwards as she moved again towards you.
Then there was a crashing sound and the ground broke away and you finally did scream as you slid along with it. You felt a sudden cold wrap around you and then the world grew dark.
Newt sighed as he finished writing another small note for this chapter, pausing as he tried to think of another word.
“Would rosemary be an appropriate description of scale color?” He muttered to himself. “I suppose it could be more of a dried thyme, but-”
He looked up as he heard the deafening rumble of a landslide. He frowned. Probably because of the rain for the first two days they had been there, not to mention before then. Then the ghosts warning echoed in his head.
‘Beware the hillsides of the loch or grow used to the taste the dirt and rock.’
His quill dropped in horrifying realization as he bolted towards the location of the deafening sounds.
“(Y/N)?! (Y/N)!!!”
You didn’t know how long you were out. Just that eventually, you slowly opened your eyes, and now you were staring at the sky and clear blue. You could only taste wet earth and you coughed weakly as you shakily stood, numb and confused as you stumbled away from the landslide you had just survived.
How did you even survive?
“(Y/N)?! (Y/N)!!!” You heard someone yelling desperately and looked up to see Newt scrambling down the hillside, his face so pale that his freckles were prominent even from a distance.
“Newt?” You managed, almost collapsing into his hold.
“Merlin’s breath, what happened?!”
“I...I don’t know. One second I was up there, the next…” You trailed off and your eyes widened, “no wait...I saw a ghost, Newt!”
For some reason his face became unreadable.
“She was pointing at me and made me move away...if I hadn’t moved, I would have been right in the middle of the landslide and-”
He pulled you into a tight hug, kissing your temple repeatedly and saying something that you couldn’t quite understand.
“Newt?”
He shook his head, unwilling to say anything.
“Let’s get you to town, alright?” He said looking at the scrapes. “I’ve gotten enough information on Ness for the moment.”
Confused, you nodded weakly and he helped you further down the hill. A little while later the two of you had stopped at the local store to collect some snacks. You were still a bit achy, but healing spells and potions had made the pain less noticeable.
“So how ‘as yer visit been?”
You glanced up at an aged man who was sitting behind the counter and offered a smile, glancing at Newt who had been scribbling away about his recent findings on Ness.
“It’s been very...scenic. We just came back from visiting the loch for a few days.”
“Ah, is ‘at right? Nae too many places ta stay there”
“We didn’t really have the time to get back, so we were staying at a small cottage near it.”
“Ye stayed in th’ lodge??”
“Um yes?” You said, glancing at Newt who had paused in his writing, looking up at the old Scotsman. “Why? Was it not allowed?”
“You dinnae see any strange things happening there did ye, Lassie?”
You felt your heart skip a beat.
“...Strange things?” You asked, glancing back at Newt, whose attention was now completely on the man, who shrugged.
“Ah, the kids ‘round here say they see a ghost roamin’ aroond. They ‘hink it’s Aderyn’s ghost.”
“Aderyn?”
“Ooch aye, a young lassie lived thaur. Poor lassie, wanted to marry ‘er sweetheart. Promised to do so an everything, but went and left ‘er there heartbroken.”
“That’s horrible.” Newt murmured.
“Aye. Poor lass. Stayed in ‘at lodge for him tae come back for ‘er. He ne’er did and she died up thaur efter a landslide. They say she stays thaur waitin for him still.”
Your panic was swiftly replaced by pity for the ghost. At least the ones in Hogwarts weren’t alone in a dreary, leaky lodge waiting for someone who would never come and then dying in such a violent manner. You glanced at Newt who had the same unreadable expression on his face. You paid for your snacks with a smile and exited. Newt turned to follow.
“She must hae liked somethin’ about ye two. She usually doesnae loch couples bein thaur.”
He paused and looked back at the old man who was smiling.
“Happy travels Mister Scamander. An’ congrats. The ghost has given ye ‘er blessings.”
Newt glanced back at you as you waited for him and felt his cheeks burning before walking briskly out. The man watched from his window as Newt bent over you and kissed your cheek, causing you to blush as well, before following him, clutching his hand and he chuckled as you disappeared out of sight.
