redraw of an april post from last year

I drew The Crystal King, or Golden Master, or The Overlord. I almost forgot to draw the face markings so that's why it's kinda sloppy.

I'm sure 90% of us knew about his role this season but I still wanted to wait to post him for a moment since I generally try to stay somewhat spoiler free publicly. Like, I'll know all the spoilers, but I won't talk about them lol. Oh, and if his pose seems familiar, guilty, I did reuse/modify/clean up his pose from the "concept art" post, because really, I think this was perfect, it captured him well and I just couldn't top it during the sketching phase of this piece. And I tried to get a little bit of rep for every form, from combining the GM and CK armor to giving him his Rebooted cape but with holes in it to resemble the wings of his dragon form, and even his overall body resembling a wad of evil like his spirit form.

Crystalized but the Council Of The Crystal King successfully kills the ninja and then later realize that the Crystal King will dispose of them if he achieves his goal so they take the ninja's clothes and start a resistance of their own

Ninjago Crystallized Spoilers!

Hey I just noticed! Do you think the Crystal King (The Overload) crystals are based off of Zane’s powers. Yeah the one who defeated him before. Because I noticed they’re powers are kinda similar, from the ice chapter anyway.

NINJAGO CRYSTALIZED SPOILERS. BIG SPOILERS

I FUCKING KNEW IT

THE OVERLORD WAS BEHIND THE GREAT DEVOURER AND HE FUCKING SEND IT TO BITE GARMADON.

DESNITY WASN'T THE BITCH THIS TIME. IT WAS MOTHERFUCKING OVERLORD.

THATS WHY THE FIRST SPINJITZU MASTER COULDN'T CURE GARMADON. IT WAS OVERLORD'S POWER.

HE HAS BEEN BEHIND EVERYTHING ALL THIS TIME. HE WAS BEHIND THE THING THAT COULD HAVE CHANGED THE ENTIRE NINJAGO TIMELINE.

FUCK.

Omfg I just realised that the Overlord talking to Harumi in its spirit form, her giving him a physical form and him now supposedly posessing her while Lloyd will eventually have to beat the Overlord at her possible cost and possibly finally fulfilling the Green Ninja prophecy is an almost exact parallel to s2 and fighting Garmadon are you shitting me

You know, for all of Crystalized's faults, It didn't do a half-bad job of characterizing the Overlord. (Even though he got weirdly little focus for being the season's big bad.)

He was his evil and manipulative self as always. He himself was decently imposing like he should be. The only problem I can say he had was the aforementioned lack of strong focus and the entire season's general lack of creativity.

But what I especially like about his presentation in Crystalized is that it actually sort of gave him a vaguely sympathetic motive. And it works!

The Overlord is the kind of character that typically doesn't have any motives that can be considered sympathetic, having any usually would go directly against the character archetype. ("Pure Unfiltered Evil")

But The Overlord makes it work because it's actually a sympathetic desire with an evil solution.

"There will be peace in the dark."

Now, I know it could very easily be interpreted that this was his way of manipulating Harumi, however, I believe that on some level the Overlord actually believes this and is driven by this desire. (Not that he believes he's in the right to do this, he's pure evil after all.)

And the reason I think this is because it noticeably fits very well into the theory (Is it a theory?) that the Overlord is the avatar opposite to the First Spinjitzu Master.

The First Spinjitzu Master was motivated to do the thing he's most known for, creating Ninjago, because he wished to escape a war. So in other words, The First Spinjitzu master too was motivated by a desire for peace.

The FSM decided in order to achieve his desire to create a world that was peaceful, and then to do his best to guard it from further threats for as long as he could before then passing on his powers and beginning a generational cycle of protectors for the world he created.

A desire sympathetic, with a (decently) good solution. (if not unsuccessful.)

The Overlord, on the other hand, born of the FSM's shadow, shares the same desire, but decides instead to plunge the world into oblivion.

Mini tale of Phil

Some old friends of mine and I would refer to the Overlord as Phil for no reason and that’s still one of my best memories from middle school <3
