Nikolai was struggling.
Between the sudden uptick in frequency and length of his blackouts and his feeling unwell overall, Nik was run down to exhaustion, and he barely had the energy to do anything, including eating enough to keep his strength up. That, along with being in physical pain and his mood tanking from the whole combination, meant all he wanted to do was try to sleep through it.
He hadn’t been able to get out of bed in the last two days beyond using the bathroom, and even that had taken more effort than Nik could manage without assistance, only adding to his depressed state.
It felt like he had more bad days than good ones now, and if recently was anything to go by, Nik was justified in that feeling as the days when he felt anywhere close to normal were few and far between lately and getting even fewer as time progressed, it seemed.
Nik had passed out for a few hours after lunch, feeling too sick to eat anything solid. Still, he had at least managed to feed from Cypress, which was more important, but with Nik being under the weather in general, what he did manage to consume got burned through too quickly to make much difference while his body was fighting through everything right now.
A knocking at his bedroom door awoke him; Nik hardly moved beyond lifting his head slightly and barely opening his eyes to see who was standing in the doorway.
“Hey, Dad…” he mumbled sleepily, head dropping back into his pillow before he noticed Cypress wasn’t there anymore. “Where’d Cy go?”
“I told him to go grab a shower, and I’d come keep you company until he got back,” Warren replied, stepping into the room and approaching his son, sitting beside him. “How are you doing, kiddo?”
“I feel like shit, and everything sucks ass?”
“Fair.”
“Is it?”
His son’s remark had Warren conceding and heaving a sigh, acknowledging that what Nik had to deal with wasn’t fair for anyone, much less a teenage boy who’d never done anything to deserve such hardship.
“Anything I can do to help right now?” the vampire asked, willing to do whatever was reasonably within his ability to help Nikolai, even if all he could do was offer a slight distraction for a few minutes.
Nik shrugged, unsure what would make any difference beyond figuring out a way to improve his condition in a meaningful and longer-term way.
“I just wanna not feel like this anymore,” he murmured, sighing exhaustedly.
“I know, Nikki,” Warren acknowledged, reaching out and running his fingers through his son’s hair affectionately and in an attempt to soothe him.
“I’m tired, Dad….”
“I know you are, and I wish I knew how to fix that for you right now.”
“What if it never gets better? What if it’s just gonna keep getting worse?”
“Didn’t your uncle say that wasn’t the case?”
“Yeah, after surgery, but that’s only to fix the problem with my blood, right? It doesn’t fix me blacking out, does it?”
“Maybe it’ll help because you won’t have so much to worry about anymore?”
“What if it doesn’t? What if the stress of going through surgery makes them worse?”
“Then we’ll figure out what to do next when we reach that point, okay?”
“Dad, I’m scared,” Nik confessed, getting tearful but trying and failing to hide it. “What if my blackouts keep getting longer until one day, it happens, and I don’t come back from it? What if I blackout so bad I stop being me anymore?”
“Hey, listen to me. It will never, ever come to that, alright?” Warren reassured, pulling Nik into his arms to comfort him. “I promise you, no matter what happens, you will always be you.”
“Dad, I’m not always me now. How can you say I’ll always be me when I turn into someone else and can’t even remember doing it?”
“We’ll figure it out, and we won’t stop trying until we do. We’re not going to lose you. You are not going to lose yourself. I won’t let that happen.”
“Promise?” Nik sniffled.
“Yes, Nikki, I promise you. We won’t let you get lost, I swear. No matter what it takes, your mom, me, Cypress, and everyone else have got you, and we’re not letting go, okay? Nobody and nothing will take you away from us ever again.”
Warren had never been so sincere about anything his whole life. Whatever it took to keep his son safe from harm and still himself, Warren would move heaven and earth to keep that promise.

It had been a set of unfortunate circumstances. Nikolai was going through a particularly turbulent rough patch. His episodes were occurring frighteningly frequently again, as though all of the progress he’d made over the last three years had suddenly vanished overnight, and the best anyone could hope for was that it was only temporary and would pass soon.
He’d been feverish again, though every effort had been made to combat that so that he would remain stable. Still, it took time to leave his system, and his healing factor was slower than usual, further hampering the situation. Nik hadn’t been able to leave the cage in days, a precaution for his safety, and that meant his family taking shifts to watch over him in case the side of him that seemed to hijack control during his blackouts attempted to harm him.
It was a small mercy that his grandfather was still visiting, meaning there was an extra pair of hands on deck to help out around the house and an extra person to watch over Nik while others got some sleep.
The hour was late, and the house was quiet.
Nikolai had woken up from his most recent bout of needing to be sedated with the steep dust system installed in the cell. Still, the episode had outlasted the dust’s effects this time around. Hence, the boy who had awoken was not in a pleasant mood, still groggy from being dosed and scowling up a storm. However, the threat of being put back under seemed to keep his self-destructive tendencies on a leash for now.
“Are you going to let me out yet? “he quizzed, knowing the answer, but he pushed his luck regardless.
“I’m afraid I cannot do that, at least for the time being,” the elder god replied calmly, seeming completely unfazed by the change in his grandson despite it being so upsetting for his parents to witness.
“What, in case I eat someone?” the boy leered.
“It is a matter of safety, yes, though more so your own than anyone you might harm since you seem only to target those proven to have hurt children.”
The boy’s eyes flicked up, a slight shift in his demeanor that seemed to be surprised.
“How did you...?”
“I know a lot of things, Nikolai.”
“Your precious little Nikki isn’t here, old man. Don’t you know that?”
“Oh, but he is. I’m looking at him right now,” Erebus countered. “And I am talking to him.”
“Don’t waste your breath. He can’t hear you right now.”
“Perhaps, but part of him is listening nonetheless.”
The boy saw what Erebus was getting at, taking a beat too long in responding to pretend that he didn’t.
“So? What’s your point?”
“My point is that, no matter what you choose to call yourself, you are still my grandson.”
“Is this the part where you try to appeal to my good side?”
“I’m simply stating that I recognize what you are.”
“Oh? And what is that, exactly?”
“The part of my grandson that remembers what happened to him.”
“Wow, clever. A real fucking eye-opener there, gramps. As if Nikki-boy’s therapist hadn’t already worked that one out? What other revelations have you got for me, hm, Captain fucking Obvious?”
“You don’t really want to hurt Nikolai.”
“I thought you said I was him?”
“You are, and you are the part of him that is in pain.”
“Again, not hearing anything new here….”
“You hurt yourself because you feel as though it’s the only way to get anyone to pay attention to your pain. You do it because you want them to see how much you are hurting, and you don’t know any other way to show them that is more effective than by spilling blood.”
The boy went quiet, another witty remark dying on his tongue as his grandfather summed up the driving force behind his behavior.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about…” he muttered, expression souring into a pout.
“That’s possible, but what if I am correct?” Erebus inquired, approaching the glass that separated them both. “Do you know what some animals do when caught in a trap? They lash out and bite anything that comes near, even if that thing is trying to help them. Some even gnaw off their trapped limb to free themselves.”
“How is that relevant?”
“Because right now I see that fourteen-year-old boy, trapped in the memory of what was done to him, fighting like hell to be free of it, even at the cost of hurting others and losing a piece of himself to escape it,” Erebus answered plainly. “Tell me I’m wrong, and I’ll believe you.”
The boy in the cage looked away, trying to hide the faltering in his hostility as he fought to push his emotions down and control them once more.
When he turned back, his grandfather was no longer on the other side of the glass but inside the cage with him.
It startled him enough to make him jump, unsure how Erebus had managed it without physically opening the cell door since the whole thing had been spelled and warded up to the eyeballs to keep Nik safely confined and unable to escape.
“I know none of us can begin to imagine how much it must hurt, Nikolai,” Erebus stated gently, slowly moving closer, keeping his hands visible to not spook the boy further.
“Stop calling me that!” he spat in reply, his resolve crumbling. “I told you, he can’t hear you….”
“Then I’m telling you this. I know the pain is more than you can bear, and I know you’re scared, and that’s okay. You don’t have to hurt yourself to get my attention. I am listening, and I will stay here and listen for as long as you need,” the elder god affirmed. “And if you need me to talk to your mother on your behalf, I will do so, no matter what you have to say or how difficult it may be to hear.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because it has become clear to me that you need to be heard in a way that does not involve bloodshed, and whichever part of you called to ask for my help understood that hurting yourself is not getting you anywhere other than spending more and more time locked in here.”
The boy fell silent for a long moment, considering the old god’s words before he let a sniffle loose, his head hanging low as his posture sagged.
“I’m just so tired…” he whispered, voice cracking with exhausted desolation.
“I know you are, dear boy. Enduring what you have for as long as you have, and while still so young, is terrible beyond words, and admittedly, I, too, am not at all pleased with your aunts on this one. You deserved better than this. You deserve better.”
The boy broke down sobbing, looking so much younger at that moment as the broken, frightened child inside the older teen stopped fighting against efforts to help him for just a moment.
Erebus moved in to comfort his grandson, pulling him into a gentle but firm embrace and making soothing sounds.
“I promise you, you don’t have to suffer this alone,” he murmured, cradling the boy as though he was physically still that small child the elder god had carried around so often when he was little and fussing terribly.
“Let us help you.”

unwillingly evil
you were forced. your resolve was broken slowly but surely, and now you're unsure of whether you'll ever get it back. for some reason, you believe that your current position is your fault. it isn't. it's the fault of those who did it to you. and yet you soldier on, facing forwards even as you slowly lose your will to continue. when you die, you're calm. unafraid for the first time in a while. this is the one thing they can't take from you.

For every 💕 I receive, I will share how my Muse acts differently around someone they love, when they have a crush, or when they're in love in general.
Nik's whole concept of attraction, relationships, and love, in general, is complicated, to say the least.
There is only one person he is and has ever been truly and deeply in love with, and that is Cypress. Around Cy, Nik is just the absolute softest (except in the bedroom, but that's another matter), and he feels safe and comfortable enough to be able to express such a deep level of emotion that he isn't usually capable of with other people.
However, Nik gets crushes easily and frequently, and it's pretty obvious when it happens as he becomes very attentive to the person he's crushing on, sometimes even to the point of fixating on them. When this happens, he enjoys the chase and will show affection through gift-giving, acts of service, and physical touch.

Nikolai
This one is easy to gush about because Nik is one of my favorite children because he is simultaneously an absolute little shit to the highest degree and just the softest boy in the right circumstances, all while dealing with some absolutely horrendous trauma and a whole catalog of health issues (The Fates really did him dirty on that front, but there will be a time in the future when he no longer has to worry about all of that. It's just gonna take a hot minute to get there).
He really is his father's son, as Nik not only inherited his looks from Warren but also a lot of his personality, mannerisms, and charm.
Nik is also genius-level smart, a fact not nearly enough people give him credit for, but he plays that to his advantage by letting them underestimate him so he can turn it around to embarrass them and put them in their place for his own amusement.
He's a lot more sensitive than I first imagined he'd be, but that's not a bad thing and I'm honestly glad he turned out different than I planned because who he is now is way better than who he would have been if he hadn't taken on a life of his own.

Nikolai, Blood, and Nonhuman Variations
Nik can obviously drink human blood. However, because of his anemia, it tends to break down faster in his system and is therefore not as filling or even very good for him - think of it like eating junk food with empty calories but no good nutrition.
Since witches are closest to humans in biology, Nik can drink witch blood without any issues, and it tends to be better for him than straight human blood because it's a little more potent.
Being half-Keres, Nik can drink "Greek" blood (ichor), so anyone in his immediate family and extended family who have compatible blood. In terms of keeping Nik stabilized and on top of his condition, ichor is the best blood type for him as it is the most compatible biologically and it is extremely potent. Due to his being a hybrid, he is also immune to the addicting effects of ichor that he would get if he was just a vampire.
The same goes for vampire blood - he can feed with no issues due to high compatibility, though it is less potent than ichor
Were/shifter blood - A bit of a gray area. Full shifter (especially bitten) is a yes, but hybrids are dependent on what they are crossed with.
Angels and demons - Blood type somewhat similar to ichor, so Nik can consume it so long as it's not from a hybrid of an incompatible mix.
Hellhounds - Nik can't drink hellhound blood due to hellhounds being of fae origin, so their blood upsets Nik's stomach.
Fae blood - Absolutely not. Fae blood is highly toxic to Nik and will put him in critical condition in a matter of minutes (it's toxic to vampires in general but especially to Nik with his medical issues).

Nikolai’s Medical Information
ACUTE HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA
Nikolai has an unusually high metabolism for a vampire, as well as an autoimmune disorder, resulting in acute hemolytic anemia as his body breaks down red blood cells faster than it can produce them, which is only accelerated further when his body is attempting to fight off infection.
This means he needs to feed multiple times a day to stay on top of it or his condition will deteriorate rapidly, leaving him fatigued, disoriented, prone to headaches and brain fog, and at an increased risk of having a dissociative episode.
Stress is also a major factor in triggering his condition, so Nik requires a stable environment and constant monitoring of his blood intake, exposure to infection and his moods/mental state to help mitigate episodes, though it is not 100% possible to prevent him from blacking out at all, hence attempts to lessen the frequency and manage those that he does have.

NIKOLAI’S MENTAL HEALTH
Nik has a lot of issues, and the complexity of those issues make his behaviour challenging to manage, as well as extremely difficult to diagnose him with anything specific due to his age and conflicting/fluctuating traits and symptoms, though many of those traits and symptoms put him in the category of a high likelihood of a Cluster B personality disorder.

Complete and total disregard for authority and law enforcement
Patterns of compulsive and deliberate lying and deceitfulness
Patterns of exploitation and manipulation, with diminished expression of empathy and difficulty in expressing remorse for having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another person
Irritability and aggressiveness to the point of physical violence
Boundary issues, both with regards to enforcing his own and breaching others
An elevated sense of entitlement
Consistent irresponsibility
Extreme lack of ability to self-regulate impulsivity
Poor impulse control with regards to sex
Self-harm and seeking out of risky/dangerous situations, with a reckless disregard for the safety of self or others
Substance abuse
Transient paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms
Obsessive fixations and possessive behaviors
Unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation
Intense fear of real or imagined abandonment and will go to extremes to avoid it
Reactionary threats of self-harm and emotional blackmail to gain attention, validation or comfort
Affective instability caused by a marked reactivity of mood, alternating between emotional blunting/flat affect with chronic feelings of emptiness and intense episodic dysphoria, anxiety, or inappropriate, intense anger
MEDICATIONS
Due to Nikolai not being human and having an extremely high metabolism even for a non-human, treating him with conventional human medicine is ineffective. As such, a more holistic approach is required to help manage his condition, including:
Ensuring he feeds enough times per day to prevent dangerous drops in his red blood cell count
Minimizing contact with anyone who is sick and/or may be contagious
Minimizing stress factors for him by providing as stable an environment as physically possible
Treating him with a strain of cannabis that has been cultivated to be strong enough to work on non-humans, and further refined and enchanted to boost its effects in Nikolai specifically
SENSORY SEEKING AND SELF-INJURIOUS BEHAVIOURS
Nikolai struggles with self-regulation of emotions and impulses, often seeking to soothe himself by way of intense sensory input, usually in the form of infliction of pain, even when he is not experiencing a blackout/dissociative episode, though this sensory seeking behaviour is amplified massively during such episodes, resulting in a loss of self-control and Nik putting himself in extremely dangerous or violent situations.
If he cannot find the necessary stimuli from an external source, he will resort to cutting or biting himself instead to gain the relief he is looking for.

If it’s just a one night stand/casual hookup he just met, he’ll probably leave pretty soon after the whole thing is done, but if it’s someone he actually has feelings for, he’s a lot more comfortable staying, and if things got intense (as they have a tendency to do with partners he knows he can play rough with), he’s very attentive and will give whatever aftercare the other person needs/wants.

What do their holidays look like? family/friends/etc.
Nik always spends the holidays with his family, and it generally involves his mom cooking and all the usual things one would expect from a large family gathering, as chaotic as it might be with so many family members being around.
Have they ever run away from home?
Yes, but only a couple of times, and they both occurred when he was experiencing a dissociative episode/blackout.
What’s one thing they’ve done that they’re the most proud of?
Actually, the progress he's made in therapy. Nik might not be anywhere close to being okay, but he's doing better than he was at his worst.
What types of books do they read? Do they have a favorite?
It varies, depending on his mood, but he tends to read more horror, sci-fi, and fantasy than anything else. His favourite author is Neil Gaiman and his favourite book is American Gods.

Nikolai’s Academic History
Nikolai had to be pulled out of public schooling at age twelve due to his behavioural and mental health issues (there was a very messy incident, to say the least, and it became immediately apparent that keeping him in public school alongside human kids was a safety issue for him).
Instead, he completed the rest of his elementary and high school education at home through a combination of online classes and private tutoring. This allowed Nik a safe and more one-to-one learning environment, allowing him to progress faster and graduate from high school a year earlier than his peers, though he could have done so two years earlier. He just opted for the extra year to max out his grades.
Nik would like to go to college at some point, but at present, it is still difficult to safeguard him, so he is not currently in any formal schooling, though he does enjoy continuing his learning in areas that interest him in the meantime, and lives the college experience somewhat vicariously by crashing parties on campus when he’s bored.

Nik's Injuries and Mental State After His Abduction
Note - Details placed under the cut due to trigger warnings for CSA, abuse, detailed injury mention, and mentions of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and eating disorders, as well as other mental health symptoms.
Nik was fourteen when he was abducted by a former associate of Warren's - Another vampire who worked as a cop and used to be on Warren's payroll but was cut loose after Warren found out that the guy was using his position on the force to abuse kids. Warren had also put in an anonymous tip which resulted in the cop losing his job and being placed under investigation. The cop abducted Nikolai to get back at Warren for this.
Nik was missing for a little over twelve hours, and when he was found (by Warren and Leon), he'd sustained approximately 24 separate stab/slash wounds, as well as more than a dozen bite puncture wounds.
He was almost completely bled out, and the only thing that stopped him from succumbing to his injuries was that he isn't human. He absolutely would have died if he had been human, and also possibly if he had only been a vampire, not a hybrid.
He also was severely beaten and had multiple broken ribs, a broken nose, facial fractures including his eye socket and jaw, broken fingers, a fractured right wrist, defensive wounds on both hands and arms, and a hairline skull fracture.
There were signs that he was also severely sexually assaulted more than once during his ordeal, and he was found stripped naked and bound at the wrists with duct tape while chained by his neck to a pipe, with wounds indicative of that kind of abuse.
He had to be kept in an induced coma for two weeks after he was found to allow time for his healing factor to properly kick in as his bleeding out, combined with the effect that had on his anemia, slowed it down to an almost human rate of healing. This is entirely why Nik has scars, as with the slowed rate of healing, scar tissue had time to form.
Nik's overall physical recovery lasted approximately six weeks, though he needed extra blood transfusions to ensure that recovery for almost three months post-abduction
Effects on Nik's mental health
Even though Nik had experienced a couple of blackouts related to his anemia before his abduction already, they became much more frequent after, going from, on average, two or three times a year to several times a week.
Nik's blackout frequency gradually lessened over the next three years through a combination of therapy with Spencer, careful monitoring of Nik's diet, feeding schedule, stress levels, and the occasional need to prescribe medications to treat/control some of the comorbid symptoms that were acting as triggers.
Nik's blackouts now occur on average only a handful of times a month, though they may be more frequent if he's stressed or unwell.
Other mental health side-effects Nik suffers:
Major depressive episodes.
Severe anxiety and fear of abandonment.
Mood swings.
Disordered sleep - patterns of insomnia and nightmares.
Disordered eating - Nik goes through periods of refusal of food and blood when he is in a high-stress state.
Self-harm - most frequently occurs during his blackouts but also occurs when he is lucid.
Intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation.
Compulsive risk-taking/Inability to adequately assess risk.
