I wonder who speaks better Spanish out of Genevieve and Ivy Nicole. I feel like it would be Genevieve mayhaps. I think Ivy Nicole can speak it and understand it alright, but it takes her a second to understand what’s being said, and she definitely speaks more Spanglish than anything when she does try to speak it. When it comes to reading it, she sucks! Same with writing it.

Genevieve understands it better than Ivy Nicole, she wanted to be fluent enough to read books and poetry in Spanish as well as try her hand in writing in Spanish (she is not very good at writing it, she messes up the sentence structure when she needs to like write more than a sentence.) But since she can read it well, she definitely has a fighting chance at writing it compared to Miss Harris. When it comes to actually speaking it, Genevieve is definitely more versed in it than Ivy Nicole is. She practices more and tries to incorporate it in her day-to-day.

Interestingly enough, despite them both being mixed, Genevieve, while still looking obviously latine, is definitely not as latine looking as Ivy Nicole. She takes more after her mother than her father. Whereas Ivy Nicole, takes more after her mother and less of her father. This matters not at all, but if these two were next to each other, someone may expect Ivy Nicole to know more Spanish than Genevieve! But it’s definitely the other way around aha.

Genevieve’s father will randomly only speak to her in Spanish so she can practice and he won’t respond to her unless she speaks Spanish back to him aha. He does the same things when he writes to her, it’s important to him that she stays connected to that side of her. Whereas Ivy Nicole’s mom just gets mad at her for not understanding Spanish that well but like ignores the fact that she sent Ivy Nicole to a catholic school where she was absolutely speaking English more often than not. There were a couple latine folks that worked at the school and Ivy Nicole would practice with them but it’s not the same. Ivy Nicole’s brother’s are far more fluent than she is.
