Nha Trang, Vietnam

Back in Vietnam for the day. Nha Trang has a beautiful bay with islands and long sand beaches that the French transformed into a resort town during the colonial days. During the Vietnam war is was a favorite R&R stop for the American soldiers.

After the end of the Vietnam war, the Soviet military became increasingly present in Cam Ranh Bay just South of Nha Trang. After retiring many Russian military personnel settled down in Nha Trang and opened tourism businesses. Today the bulk of foreign tourists are Russian. In the main tourist areas signs are in Russian. There also used to be lots of Chinese tourists. Covid has really hurt the economy. Before Covid there were over 200 cruise ships visiting the area and this year they are expecting 40.

It was rainy the day we were here so the beach was abandoned but across the bay there was a huge amusement area built by the Russians. We just walked through the city and had a great Vietnamese lunch. There were not nearly as many motorbikes as in Saigon.

There was a Swiss/French doctor who settled in the area and discovered the diphtheria toxin. He also discovered the bacteria causing bubonic plague and developed a vaccine for the disease. He also developed techniques for cultivating the Cinchona tree from which quinine is extracted. I put a photo of the plaque and statue of him below.
